To demonstrate that you can work safely in a fitting environment To demonstrate that you can use a drilling machine to drill, countersink, counterbore and ream holes To demonstrate your underpinning knowledge of the drilling machine, work holding equipment, drills,

dimensional accuracy, surface finish and material specification To demonstrate you can use a range of measuring and marking out equipment To demonstrate you can use a range of hand tools to produce a given component To demonstrate you can select and use a range of locking and fastening devices

WHAT do we need?

Learner instructions and drawings Learner report sheet Mild steel bar (as detailed in drawing) Drilling Machine Vice Rule Micrometer Rivets (as supplied)

Square Scriber Protractor/Combination Set Files Hammer Suitable taps and drills Reamer Countersink and counter bore cutters Bevel gauge screw (as supplied)

HOW do we make a start? Observe health and safety procedures at all times. 1. Bevel square body

Select 2 pieces Bright Drawn Mild Steel for items (A and B) Remove burrs File one end flat and square on each piece Select 1 piece Bright Drawn Mild Steel for item (C) Remove burrs File one end flat and square Mark out 45º angle ( + 1.0 mm for final finishing) Cut angle and file angle flat and square Mark out one long side piece for radius and hole positions( + 1.0 mm for final finishing) Set spindle speed on drilling machine Clamp all 3 pieces together, drill 3.2mm and counter sink holes (positioning 45º angle on centre line) Rivet together taking care not to bruise the area around the rivet head File rivet heads down to face of material File both edges flat, square and parallel Drill 5.5mm hole through both pieces (using suitable 3 mm spacer) Drill 6mm clearance hole in one piece Tap one hole M6 x1.0 File end of all three pieces flat and square to edge (to remove 1.0 mm that was allowed for final

finishing) File radius (12.5R) Final inspection and report completion

Select 1 piece Bright drawn Mild Steel File one edge and one end flat and square Mark out angle, slot and radius Drill 6mm hole at either end of slot Chain drill 5.5mm holes down the remainder of slot File holes to form a slot File 45º angle and radius (12.5R) Assemble blade into bevel gauge body using 6mm screw (supplied) Final inspection and report completion

3. Doweling, locking and fastening

Select two pieces of Bright Drawn Mild Steel bar (as drawing) File both ends flat and square (on each piece) Mark out holes (on10mm x 50mm x 100mm) Clamp two pieces together Drill and ream holes for dowels Fit dowels Drill and tap holes, countersink, counter bore appropriate holes Fasten screws, stud, bolt and locknuts Final inspection and report completion

4. Tap and drill gauge

Select suitable Bright Drawn Mild Steel bar as drawing File one end flat and square and file on chamfer Mark out chamfer and using hacksaw and file cut to size Mark out all holes and centre punch Drill and chamfer all holes as drawing to correct sizes Tap holes as drawing Ensure work if fully deburred and cleaned up Final inspection and report completion
