SPECIAL EXHIBITS

The Quilts of Carolyn FriedlanderSponsored by Robert Kaufman Fabrics

Carolyn Friedlander is one of the most influential quilters today with her unique, original style. Her aesthetic draws on elements of art, architecture, and the history of quilt making. She finds inspiration in features of the Florida landscape, as well as in the architecture, history, and cultural identity of St. Louis, where she lived during college and her early career. Carolyn’s work examines the duality inherent in modern approaches to traditional craft: the intersections between manufactured and organic, experimental and time tested, machine pieced and hand sewn. She explores these influences and others for fresh ideas that will contribute to both the present and future of the craft.

Carolyn grew up on a cattle and citrus ranch in Lake Wales, Florida, where she spent most of her free time immersed in drawing, painting, and sewing. She earned a B.A. in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis.

SAQA Presents: Modern Inspirations — Art Quilts from the 1970s Through TodaySponsored by Hoffman California Fabrics

This special exhibit will document the rich history of the art quilt movement as it relates to the development of the modern quilt aesthetic. This exhibit of thirty iconic, historic and contemporary quilts by master artists from around the world is a feast for the eyes, filled with gorgeous art. This engaging chronological presentation demonstrates the development and continuing power of the art quilt movement.

The art quilt movement started in the mid‑1960s and has exploded over the past five decades. Today, thousands of artists and collectors around the world are passionate about this art form. With the advent of the Internet, email communications, and social media, an ever‑increasing expansion of the global art quilt community has developed since the turn of the 21st century. One of the recent outgrowths of the art quilt movement is the modern quilt.

The AIDS Memorial Quilt: The Names ProjectSponsored by Beyond the Reef

For many Generation X quilters, the AIDS quilt was our first exposure to memorial quilting. Twelve sections, curated by Mary Fons, of the internationally celebrated AIDS Memorial Quilt – the 54‑ton, handmade tapestry that stands as a memorial to more than 96,000 individuals lost to AIDS will be on display. The quilt panels come from every state in the nation, every corner of the globe and they have been sewn by hundreds of thousands of friends, lovers and family members into this epic memorial, the largest piece of ongoing community art in the world.

In a war against a disease that has no cure, The AIDS Memorial Quilt has evolved as our most potent tool in the effort to educate against the lethal threat of AIDS. By revealing the humanity behind the statistics, The AIDS Memorial Quilt helps teach compassion, triumphs over taboo, stigma and phobia; and inspires individuals to take direct responsibility for their own well‑being and that of their family, friends and community.

CHARITY CHALLENGE

The QuiltCon Charity Quilt Challenge requires participating guilds to work collaboratively to create quilts using a predetermined color palette and modern traditionalism as a design element. The quilts will be sewn in their entirety by each guild, from design and piecing through quilting and binding, to produce complete twin sized quilts. After the quilts are exhibited at QuiltCon, guilds will donate their quilts to a charity in their community.

The 2018 design theme is modern traditionalism. As modern quilters, we always want to recognize and honor the rich creativity found in traditional quilts. The challenge requires participating local guilds and individual member teams to work collaboratively with their groups to create completed quilts by reinterpreting one or more traditional blocks or quilt designs using a predetermined color palette.

Visit quiltcon.com/charity-quilt-challenge to learn how to participate!

10:30 a.m.LEC02FINE ART TO FUNCTIONAL QUILTSKim Eichler-Messmer

Kim studied painting and printmaking in college (among many, many other things) and pursued a career in fine art. She never intended to make a quilt until, one day in graduate school, it seemed like a good idea. Armed with a sewing machine, a pair of scissors, some precious hand dyed fabric, and no idea what she was doing, she embarked on a quilt adventure. Essentially, she learned how to quilt by doing everything wrong. Hear about her path from Fine Art to Functional Quilts and how inspiration can be found all around us.

12:00 p.m.LEC03THE AIDS QUILT: COMFORT, COMPASSION, & CHANGEMary Fons

When the first panels of “the AIDS quilt” were sewn together in San Francisco in 1987, the U.S. HIV/AIDS epidemic had only just begun. At the peak of the crisis in 1995, 319,849 people — mostly young, vibrant men — were dead from complications from AIDS while 200,000 more tested positive for the virus. As the death toll grew, so did the quilt. The story of the AIDS Memorial Quilt is the story of a modern plague and exists as evidence of enduring hope for victims and survivors, friends and family. Learn about the beauty of the quilt and an essential, tragic period in our history in this must‑see lecture by Mary Fons. Warning: This lecture contains graphic content.

3:00 p.m.LEC05QUILT AS DESIRED: CHOOSING WALKING FOOT FRIENDLY DESIGNS FOR YOUR QUILTJacquie Gering

9:00 a.m.LEC07QUILT PRESERVATION 101Laura McDowell Hopper

As modern quilters, we are sewing tomorrow’s history today. Just as we marvel at quilts in museums across the country, future generations of quilters will look back at today’s quilt movement as an important benchmark in our history. Whether you are caring for a treasured heirloom quilt or your own modern quilt, it’s important to ensure that your in‑home storage is preserving, rather than damaging, your quilts. Modern quilts are important, and preserving our legacies starts now. In this lecture, quilter, museum curator, and textile preservationist Laura McDowell Hopper will introduce you to museum‑quality supplies, demonstrate preservation techniques you can use at home, and explain why some common household quilt storage can do more harm than good. Students will leave this lecture with the confidence to ensure long-term quilt preservation in their homes.

10:30 a.m.LEC08MACHINE EMBROIDERY: CAN IT BE MODERN AND IS IT FOR ME?Miriam Coffey

In this lecture, we will discuss machine embroidery and how it can fit into the modern aesthetic. We will do a little myth busting on what we think of when we hear the words “machine embroidery” — it’s not all teddy bears with balloons. Inspiration, resources, and examples will be shared to encourage the use of machine embroidery as another tool in your sewing repertoire.

1:30 p.m.LEC10MADE IN JAPAN: QUILTS, COTTON & INDIGOTeresa Duryea Wong

Japan’s textile history will come alive as you learn about two epic plants and how they forever changed the world: cotton and indigo. Indigo is native to Japan and for centuries, it has inspired weavers, dyers, merchants and artists. Indigo is especially symbiotic with cotton. Hear the stories behind traditional cotton folk textiles such as boro, sashiko, katazome, kasuri, & chusen, a time‑honored traditional screen printing method used to make cotton yukata (kimono) and tenugi (hand towel). Take an exclusive tour of Japan’s elite textile printing mills and understand why Japan is considered the world’s finest producer of quilting cotton. See the stunning quilts being made today with these very old and very new textiles and meet the Japanese quilt artists who are designing fabric for quilting.

3:00 p.m.LEC11STITCH IDENTITY: FINDING YOUR SIGNATURE STYLEPamela Wiley

Quilting is pluralistic by nature, and this community is what brings us together. But how can we also stand apart, finding our own voice that speaks to who we are, in our own time, and guides us forward as we evolve through our art? Pamela Wiley will speak on creative strategies for quilters to innovate, be captivated, and expand on how you chart your personal development and skill sets. How do we move forward in a way that is expressive of our own unique point‑of‑view? Our marks are our signature, just as in our handwriting. Whether you quilt by hand or machine, whether for function or for art, whether hand‑guided or computerized, what are the strategies to grow our own personal skill sets as we develop a signature style.

You’ll learn new things and be reminded of things you’ve long forgotten.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23 ‑ SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24

5:00 p.m.LEC12THE MODERN QUILT: ROOTS & FRONTIERSMary Fons

The modern quilt was born in the first decade of the 21st century — but it didn’t hatch out of an egg. Modern quilts have aesthetic roots in various 20th century art movements, draw from many cultural “moments,” and owe plenty to quilts and quilters that came before. Seeing those roots helps us as quilters look ahead — and the future of the modern quilt is nothing short of thrilling. Popular QuiltCon lecturer Mary Fons brings you the history of the modern quilt (so far) and predicts what’s to come as the moderns forge ahead in what she believes is the second wave of the Great American Quilt Revival.

9:00 a.m.LEC13QUILTING IN JAPAN: THEN AND NOWTeresa Duryea Wong

Japan has a long and rich history with textiles, and quiltmaking, which took hold in the 1970s, has quickly transformed into its own distinct aesthetic. The idea of the quilt was originally imported to Japan from America, and this lecture uncovers how that influence traveled from West to East, from a new culture to an old one. This lecture will explain why most Japanese quilts today are constructed with such impeccable craftsmanship and how this tradition of seeking perfection came about. Today, contemporary quilters in Japan are breaking new ground and inspiring quilters around the world with everything from traditional taupe quilts to uber-modern fiber art. Meet Japan’s most talented quilters, view their stunning quilts and learn their stories.

Dyeing your own fabric is a great way to customize your quilts and is much easier than you might think. Kim will discuss different dyes and methods including natural dye, synthetic dye, indigo, removing dye, and shibori. She will provide a wealth of practical information, resources, and inspiration. If you have been wanting to add dyeing to your quilt tool box but aren’t sure how, this lecture will fill you in on some key details and provide a great starting point.

3:00 p.m.LEC17LESSONS FROM ART CRITIQUEChawne Kimber

As a quilter begins to find her or his own voice in design and/or artistic self‑expression, it can be valuable to incorporate more deliberate artistic practices into the method. We will discuss the act of critique — both giving and receiving — with a view towards growth and evolution of expressions while also staying mindful of the social impact of our choices.

12:00 p.m.LEC15FEATURED LECTUREYOU MAKE THE RULES: HOW I USE DESIGN TO GUIDE WORK AND LIFE.Carolyn Friedlander

We all have interesting ideas to explore in our work, whether it’s where we come from, the environment around us or the ideas and thoughts that most inspire us. These things are the foundation of our creative work, and design can be the means by which we explore them. In 2008, the Michigan State University Museum opened an exhibit called “Quilts and Human Rights.” The exhibit featured quilts from around the world that honor champions of human rights, document events and experiences that show quiltmaking as a means of coping with oppression, and examines how quilts can raise awareness of global social issues. Nearly a decade later, this exhibit traveled to the Pick Museum of Anthropology at Northern Illinois University, where it was expanded by adding 15 modern quilts made in the last ten years. In this lecture, Pick Museum Curator Laura McDowell Hopper will introduce you to this powerful exhibit that addresses LGBTQ+ rights, institutionalized racism, women’s rights and feminism, Native American sovereignty, migration, and more. Students will leave this lecture with a deeper understanding of the connections between quiltmaking and these relevant social issues.

MSC201 CONTEMPORARY MENDING: ESSENTIAL TECHNIQUESHeidi Parkes Handwork RoomIt is far easier to mend a garment than venture to the store. However, for that mend to be successful, it must maintain drape, weight, and comfort — easier said than done. This class covers the basics of mending. The most common ailments, and the most universal fixes for your clothes: thinning on the thigh, knee, crotch, rear, elbow; large holes, and tiny, almost invisible (but definitely not) holes; split seams, visible and invisible. Hand sewing experience is a must. MSC201 Saturday, February 24 9:00 a.m. ‑ 12:00 p.m.

Beyond these three mend types, students are welcome to bring their most vexing items! We will talk through these unusual challenges to find a beautiful solution.MSC202 Saturday, February 24 2:00 p.m. ‑ 5:00 p.m.
