Thesis Title: Statistical Classification Techniques in the Analysis of Remotely Sensed Images
Abstract: Generally linear and quadratic discriminant
analysis techniques are used to classify remotely sensed
image data such as Medical Imageries or Satellite collected
data. Various users of these techniques found that the
number of misclassified pixels is quite large. To tackle this
situation some new discriminant functions are proposed and
these are found to be reducing the number of misclassified
pixels particularly when the data is coming from non-normal
multivariate populations.

Aligarh, India, organises the Refresher Courses for Assistant/ Associate Professors of different
colleges/universities of India. I have been delivering the invited talks as a Resource Person in
these courses for many years (1994-till date) on the topics such as:
• Computer based Statistical Teaching and Research.
• Current trends in Applied Statistics Research with special reference to
Simulation Techniques and Statistical Image Analysis Techniques.
• Official Statistics.
International Recognition for Research Work
A detailed story of 8 columns appeared in The Daily Telegraph, U.K. on December 10, 1990
regarding the work related to Image Analysis techniques for styles of art. My colleague Peter
Strong, an artist and myself as a statistician pioneered the work. The work drew attention to the
extent that the write-up predicts that " ...This technique will revolutionise how we classify styles."
