    Introduction

It is recognized that perfection is difficult toachieve and that the cost of a perfectproduct would usually be prohibitive. However, there are defined standards that

must be met for every customer.

Quality assurance and quality control arethe processes used to ensure that the

project deliverables meet the projectobjectives and are of an appropriatequality.

    Role of QA/QC Department

    1. Verify that requirements are followed,

    2. Verify that controlling and checking anactivity have been done,

    3. Ensure that approved working methodsare established,

    4. Evaluate the reported principal causes ofnon-conformances;

    5. Evaluate the effectiveness of correctiveaction, and

    6. Determine where improvements arerequired

    Definition

    Assurance

    collective term for planned, formalized

activities intended to provide confidence that

the output will meet required quality levels.

    Control

    in-process activities and techniques intended

    to create specific quality characteristics.

    Quality Assurance is not:

    Quality control or inspection.

    Super-checking activity.

Responsible for engineering decisions. A massive paper generator.

    A major cost area.

    A panacea for all ills.

    Quality Assurance is:

    Cost-effective.

    An aid to productivity.

A means of getting it right first time everytime.

    Good management sense, and, mostimportantly;

    The responsibility of everyone.

Quality AssuranceIn addition to in-process activities,

    quality assurance includes:

an array of activities external to theprocess

    activities undertaken to determinecustomer needs.

    Quality Control is not:

Additional work to a normal day to daytasks

    Unnecessary documentation to complete

    a project

    Additional cost to a project

A 100% inspection of completed tasks

A guarantee that all works are complyingto requirements

    Quality Control is :

a task that lowers the probability ofhaving a no-quality output

    A preventive measure to avoid

    escalation of a problem

An inspection of products or completedtasks

A random sampling of voluminousmaterials for inspection

    Quality Control

    These includes:

    monitoring,

    Inspection,

    reduction of variation,

    elimination of known causes, and

    efforts to increase economiceffectiveness.

    Quality Assurance Quality Control

    A systematic set of activities

    to provide confidence that

    requirements are

    established

    The process by which

    quality is compared withapplicable standards;

    An activity that establishes

    and evaluates the processes

    An activity which verifies if

    the product meets pre-

    defined standards.

Helps establish processes. Implements the process.

    Quality Assurance Quality Control

    Sets up measurements

    programs to evaluate

    processes.

    Verifies if specific

    attribute(s) are in a specific

    product or service specific

    product or service

    Identifies weaknesses in

    processes and improves

    them.

    Identifies defects for the

    primary purpose of

    correcting the defects.

    Prevents the

    introduction of issues or

    defects

    Detects, reports and corrects

    defects

    Difference in responsibilities

    Quality Assurance Quality Control

    Evaluates whether quality

    control is working for the

    purpose of determining

    weakness in the process.

    Evaluates if the application

    is working for the purpose

    of determining defect in

    the functionalities.

    Improves the process that

    is applied to multiple

    products.

    Improves the development

    of a specific product or

    service.QA personnel should not

    perform quality control

    unless doing it to validate

    quality control is working.

    QC personnel may perform

    quality assurance tasks if

    and when required.15
