Experience levels
Entry Level Junior roles typically requiring 0-2 years’ work experience.
Experienced Non-ManagerThe role typically requires 2-6 years’ work experience.
ManagerThis role may not have responsibility for managing others, or have Manager in its title, however the role typically requires the employee to have >6 years’ work experience.
Working with Myanmar’s top local and international employers, we understand there is an ongoing need for human resource professi-onals to have access to timely andaccurate information to assist their planning and decision-making. Therefore, I am pleased to share with you the JobNet Employment Report.
The report is a summary of an analysis of data collected on JobNet.com.mm from 1st October to 31st December 2019. With JobNet receiving over 120,000 job applications each month and continually hosting on average 3,000 job vacancies, our data gives insight into labour demand, the level of experience being sought, and the salaries being oered in the Myanmar employment market.
JobNet is committed to supporting Myanmar’s human resource community. I look forward to your feedback and suggestions on how we can improve our report, which we plan to publish quarterly from January 2019.
For access to the extended online report, please contact me or your JobNet account manager.
This report has been developed based on data available in the JobNet.com.mm website database; comprising jobs posted by over 900 employers on the site and candidate applications between 1st October and 31st December 2019.
The sample size of job post advertisements is based on an average of 3,000 active jobs per month over 12 months and 1,340,000+ candidate applications.
Salaries provided typically reflect the salary budgeted for the position at the time of advertising. Outliers, as well as typos, have been removed from the data set.
Experience levels allow for a certain degree of flexibility, however they can be interpreted as per standard human resource management and employment guidelines.
Entry level, Experienced Non-Managers and Manager level roles were included in the data set for analysis. As we continue to get more and more data on Director level roles, you'll see them start to be included in the quarterly report (starting with this one) when statistically significant.

The final quarter of 2019 remained mostly stable in terms of the top 10 job functions with the highest demand.
The only noticeable change was Logistics, Distribution, and Fleet services returning to replace Education in 10th place.
There were some minor increases and decreases in demand amongst the top nine job functions. Demand for jobs in Sales and BD remained in the top spot, and demand rose by 2.34% compared to Q3. Conversely, Engineering suered the biggest drop in demand, with a 1.02% decrease.
This quarter, though, saw a decerase in raw numbers of applications across the board, with fewer applicants in all categories. Traditionally, this is not surprising as the end of a calendar year is often the most stable period for workforces; comparatively, the majority of hiring is done in the earlier months of the year.

As has been seen throughout the year, corporates continued to out-advertise SMEs, this time in all 10 of the top job functions. As the GDP of Myanmar rises, this is no surprise; corporates will continue to go from strength to strength while SMEs eventually work their way to catching up.
In this quarter, though, Marketing, Media, and Creative jobs were the most balanced, while the percentages of advertisements for Sales and BD jobs by corporates over-doubled those by SMEs.

Myanmar has an increasingly skilled and mobile workforce and this is reflected in the data this quarter. As is consistent with the rest of 2019, the majority of jobs typically require some level of workplace experience.
The three job functions with the highest percentage of entry-level applicants in this quarter were Sales & BD, Accounting, and Administrative. However, the jobs requiring the highest level of experience were also in these sectors; this is indicative of a larger proportion of recruitment overall, at all levels.
Looking at the number of jobs at each level as a proportion of the total job count though, the data shows a dierent pattern: Sales & BD, Admin, and Customer service hired the most entry level applicants as a percentage of their total hires, while HR & Training and Logistics hired for the largest proportion of managerial jobs. Accounting, Engineering, and IT required less managerial and executive experience.

The top 20 job functions receiving the largest number of job applications remained fairly similar again in Q4, with only one change: Skilled Trades replacing PR & Comms jobs. Given the country-wide drive to improve the infrastructure, this is not a surprise.
Within the top 20 there was some movement. Notably, only four job functions enjoyed an increase in quarter over quarter applicants: IT, Project Management, Legal, and Hospitality, with Hospitality an especially encouraging case study in that it actually increased over each subsequent quarter. Engineering and Accounting jobs saw the biggest decrease in applicants in the last three months of 2019 but both managed to stay in their ranked positions from Q3. Fields to fall included HR, Education, and Procurement.
2.2 Most competitive job functions for job seekers.

Number of average applications per job ad
Overall, Q4 saw an increase in the number of applicants per job. While for the individual this may be more challenging, for the hiring companies and the job market itself, this is a positive: more applicants means more chance of finding the right person for the right role.
HR, Admin, and Customer service roles were in the highest demand at the end of 2019, with Project Management and Skilled Trade roles increasing in competitiveness to enter the top 20. Voluntary and Research and Development jobs were less competitive, and no longer in the top 20.
The number of applicants per Design job fell significantly this quarter, while Engineering and Manufacturing jobs remained as before. The move this quarter seemed to be towards practical jobs rather than planning, and this would mirror the country’s drive to develop its infrastructure moving into a more practical phase.
2.3 Top 30 job function applications by gender.

Similarly to the rest of the year, 54% of all job applicants were female.
The talent pool is continuing to grow and diversify, while the gender of applicants moves slowly towards being more balanced.
Hospitality, Legal, and Marketing job functions saw the most gender balanced applicants. However, the job functions with the biggest gender divide are still Accounting, with 84% of jobs going to female applicants, and Wellbeing, with 78% of all jobs going to male applicants. Manufacturing also remains more male-dominated, and HR and Education jobs are at the other end of the spectrum. This quarter saw an interesting leap in female applicants for Strategy roles and more men than women applying for Writing jobs.

The final quarter of 2019 saw a slight divergence once again in local vs foreign salaries; as the year closed, local employees were earning 89.5% of their foreign counterparts salaries, compared to 99.3% in October.
Again, there is a significant disparity between the dierent experience levels. While local employees at a Managerial level were earning around 19% less than foreign employees, this was not reflected in entry level roles. Local salaries for emerging talent remained much more balanced, earning 97.3% of a foreign salary. This is great news for job seekers entering the job market for the first time.

ManagementThis quarter saw Project Management jobs taking the title of best paying job. However, the top 3 job functions - Project Management, Management, and IT - all saw a drop in salary compared to the third quarter of 2019 when looking at the average salary. Logistics jobs enjoyed the largest salary increase this quarter, with Accounting and Sales also trending positively.
Hospitality and Customer Service roles entered the top 20, while Design and PR dropped out.
The overall average salary of the 20 top paying job functions fell this quarter by around 10% with the highest paid jobs dropping back below the 1 million MMK mark.
According to the International Monetary Fund, the longer term prediction is that Myanmar’s GDP is set to reach $200 billion by 2030; so while the end of 2019 saw a slight overall decrease in salary, the long term picture is far more positive.
