GROUPS?

WHAT SOCIAL GROUPS ARE REPRESENTED?In the production the cast is young and consists of a male and female,

one of which, the male, is the professional and the other, the female, is the sly criminal that outwits the male protagonist. However in the production we didn’t have the reach in order to acquire an old enough set of cast so we had to use Freddie and Louise Carus who both look in their late teens early 20’s, the age group that would watch film content as they're 15-24 on average.

One could argue that the audience questions the mental state of the female antagonist due to her calm nature in a situation that should come across intimidating, however she sits there smoking and answering the detective back with ease, as if she has the upper hand.

*The male and female characters go face to face in the interrogation*

HOW ARE THE SOCIAL GROUPS REPRESENTED?

There is a reasonable amount of ideological construction in the opening of our piece, the female is seen to outwit the male character into a false sense of security, to his peril. As the scene un folds there is a clear binary between the two characters, thus two sex’s, to which the female takes the higher ground intellectually. This shows ideological discourse in our production as the male is normally seen as the positive presence and the female the negative absence, however its very much the other way round.

As all of the characters in the production are roughly the same age we’re unable to compare the different age groups, however we are able to say that the myth that with age comes knowledge cannot be proven as the male is made a fool by the female who is of similar age.

Stereotypes aren't represented in our piece with no social groups being marginalized. Overall our piece is an ideologically progressive text as it represents females to be in a positive light over males in an emergent ideology. Value judgments cannot be made by the audience regarding age as all the characters are of similar ages.

HOW ARE THE REPRESENTATIONS TECHNICALLY STRUCTURED?

Mise-en scene The choice of costume for the female is in formal attire of a red blouse and black trousers. This is very conventional of film noir with a fem fatale character. To which she has connotations of a sexual and alluring nature due to the costume choice

The non- verbal actions of the female character are very calm, cool and calculating in a situation to which one should be nervous and worried. This makes her out to be a cold blooded, emotionless killer. Also through her monotonous tone of expression as well as her smoking links I with key conventions of film noir as well as being unconventional of contemporary texts.

The lighting used throughout the interrogation is low key to show the criminality of the scene in order to reinforce the location as being corrupt.

Camera workWhen the tracking shots are taking place the female fatale character is absent from the scene even though she isn’t in the shot., this is because sound bridges are created. Neither of the two characters are given prevalence as they both get equal shot time with the characters being in shot 25% of the total time.

Pov shots behind the shoulder of the female character as she speaks, however we aren’t able to see her face. All of which creates enigma

Slow camera shots with high amounts of dialogue which creates a different experience from fast cutting rate and no dialogue so it will subverting conventions

SoundThe female character talks a lot and controls the conversation, to which thepurpose of her dialogue is to give her more power over the detective as she has more lines

The male responds to her dialogue as if she is controlling the conversation. Where as in a conventional horror production the interrogator would lead the conversation
