What is Representation?

Representation differs from sexuality, age, gender, ethnicity, disability/ability.

When using the 4 different elements (camera shots, editing, sound, mise-en-scene) the representation of different social groups are represented.

The main social group represented in our film opening is teenagers. The character which plays in the film opening is a teenage girl herself, and this is shown from the way she acts and the way she dresses. Her pink and white ballerina costume portrays her girly personality and her applying make up and doing her hair, and also looking into the mirror. This element is portrayed to us mainly through the use of mise-en-scene. In this part, teenagers are represented and shown to us in a positive way.

The other main social group represented in our film opening is disability. The same character plays another role witch shows us that she is diagnosed with a split personality, hence the title of the film ‘split’. This character is also represented mainly by the use of mise-en-scene, the way she dresses and acts portraying her characters illness. The alcohol, pills, blood, medical sheets, make-up and clothes all build up to a disturbed teenager. This character is the complete opposite of the previous one, with perfect contrasts making it clear to the audience with the use of camera shots and the pace of the film.
