Quiet Follows Tumult inUnited States Steel
SMALL CHANGES IN PRICES
Feeling Prevails In Street that Gyra-tion in Steel Common lIne Hurtthe Market More Than They HaveHelped It Biff Buyer DLipoaca ofIloldlnff and Leaves City
New York Oct 23 While there wasy no alteration today In the essentialcharacter of the stock market theoutward face of the market waschanged Instead of yesterdays furyand tumult In the United States Steelshares with accompanying commotion-In the market as a whole thure was ageneral quieting down so that most ofthe day business really appeared to bestagnant
Strong support was however extended-to values the effort of manipulation beIng1 in other words to keep the marketdull but steady for a time The volumeof business was muoh less than that ofyesterday and at tjtie end of the dayonly small Irregular changes In priceswere disclosed There seemed to be aprevailing Impression in the financialdistrict that the extraordinary gyrationsin the United States Steel commonchares yesterday had hurt tho market agood deal more than they had helped it
Dig Buyer Leaves CityIt became known after the close of the
stock exchange session that an Individualwho had played a very prominent part
I In the recent heavy buying ot stocks andwas particularly one of the earliest andlargest participators In the buying ofthe United States Stool common shareshad disposed of his holdings and wa toleave this evening fer a twoweeks tripSouth This newa was doubtless rereived with mingled feelings by laterbuyers of the United Status Steel andother shares
There was no fluctuation worthy of no-tice today in either call or time moneyrates and sterling exchange was lower
i under offerings of bills from many quarters Possibly the decline was however
connected with the announcementthat the firm of J P Morgan Co hadjust negotiated a sale in Paris of 10000008In one year 4 per cent notes of theMichigan Central Railroad Company Itmay very well be that drawing of exchange against this sale has already begunAlthough estimates today of theamount of cash bet by the banks withintf week were all pretty nearly unitedIn the neighborhood of 4000000 it wasrt generally believed that tomorrows
bank return at leaat in the average formc f tnc statement would show such a rer r wed shifting of loans from the bankst the trust companies and foreign andprivate inatituUons as to result in littleI any change in the bank surplus TheImportant teature of the outward moveri of ha however become the
tm r of funds to Canadattld Shipment for Gnnniln-
Fu hi Ired thousand dollars In goldwas shipment te Montreal yest lay uia m909 more today and the
traoafer was of coursethe faqf that as money rates In LondonfTVgher than they are here there tr-
v reason why Canadian banks shouldriK the money that they have on depositI Tf and relend it in London
The facilitIes for doing this are ofcourse rather greater than those of theaverage New York private banker oreven those of the leading N w Yorktanks At same time it appears that
English money tituaUoji is becoming i
a little easier owing for one thing to thek that gold la likely In the I
rear future to go front Brazil to London

New York Oct 2SBrtvdstretg reviewI of the state of trade tomotraw win aay
Retail demand and reorder tradewith Jobbers In seasonable lines ham boomquickened by the weeks weather de-velopments AS the first distinct touchof winter weather gradually overspreadthe country the reports testify demandhas boon stimulated and the weeksbusiness as a whole compares favorablywith the like week a year ale Owingto the prevalence earlier In the monthof unseaaonabbr warm weather howeverthe total business done In October topronounced hardly up to expectadons andIn some sections it is actually
Collections have shown a certain de-gree of improvement also and are classeda fair to good varying with the sectionsreporting In leading industrialthere Is not much new to chronicle laIron and steel a fair business is doingand trade is best ta finished lines butthe cruder forms it has not developedgreatly
Where much done it is claimed tohave bee at the expense of prices Incotton Roods firmness and a rather moreoptimistic feeling are noted as a resultof curtailed production small stocks inall hands and growth of belief in thepermanence of about present prices
woolen dress goods demand is notgreatly Changed The advance of the eesyson has not for especial activityin building Throughout all lines
evidence of conservatism In orderingbut except In the clothing trade at somecenters there are no actual complaintsof stocks being other than light

The EQUITABLE has been doing business for thirtyone years
Its successful record has demonstrated that the Association has been conducted solely upon the best Building Association principles not departed in the slightest
providing on one hand for the regular systematic monthly savings on shares accumulating profitsthereon and on the other making loans i to its members onlong time repayable in principal andinterest
The object and policy of the EQUITABLE has been sothoroughly established with such beneficial results for its mem-bers that it will continue the same course adhering strictlyto the same correct Building Association principles thus realizing in the future as in the past sure growth and successand further extension of its usefulness
The EQUITABLE receives no deposits no shares areissued or loans made that are not paid in monthly installments-no banking business is transacted no dividends are declaredbut accumulated profits are paid when shares are withdrawn-or matured With right Association methods as pursued in the EQUITABLE systematic saving on stock becomes-a fixed habit and the more that is saved the more likely oneis to continue the monthly payments not withdrawing principal or profit until the sum is large enough to begin buyingproperty or to make some other safe investment So one inpaying for a home through the EQUITABLE is far more cer-tain success than giving a mortgage or a straight loanwithout monthly payments To make regular and systematicpayments on a given amount of shares allowing the profits andprincipal to accumulate until they are matured or withdrawnand to make loans on long time repayable principal and inter-est in monthly installments secures the best results The verypurpose and practical effect is to encourage shareholders tosuccessfully save and accumulate and to pay for homes
To endeavor to save as you may find it convenient andto easily withdraw in driblets what has been saved or to en-
deavor to pay for property mortgaged for a term of years byonly paying interest semiannually results more often in failurethan success
There is no other one way so sure as the EQUITABLEhas proved for saving money and paying for property than bymonthly installments
SAVING WITH THE BEST RESULTS-The total saved in monthly payments on shares
is 1234250953Of that amount there has been returned to mem-
bers 1001940420With their share of profits amounting to 116654601Leaving principal saved to their credit on the
books 182310532With accumulated earnings on the same amount-
ing to 47830710
SUREST WAY TO SECURE A HOMEThe EQUITABLE has loaned to members with
out loss 1730740000-Of that amount they have settled or repaid 1506300456Leaving loans outstanding now held by mem-
bers 224439544Examine and consider carefully what these figures mean
They represent the savings and profits thereon of thousands-of shareholders and the amount loaned to them tohomes
