December 14, 2015

Dear Father Mike,

On October 31, 1958, our parents, Sarah V. and John F. Tonrey, moved to the Highland Park section of Levittown, PA; this would become their forever home. They arrived with their three children; this number would grow to 10 children by 1971. Affectionately referred to as “Vera and Jack”, they quickly settled into their new parish, Queen of the Universe, and created their home away from home. Being transplants from their respective homes in New York City and Connecticut, they had no family here. They became part of the parish in its infancy and had a tremendous respect for Father Coyle, who founded Queen of the Universe in 1955.

Our parents were very active in the parish and we grew up knowing that Queen was an extension of our own home. All of their “new” children were baptized and received their sacraments at the original church, prior to the fire on December 16, 1982. Early that morning, they awoke to the tragic news that their beloved Church was on fire. Our parents loaded into the car; upon arriving, we saw the smoking remnants of Queen of the Universe Church. They, as well as all of the parishioners and their families, were devastated, along with the recently retired Monsignor Coyle, and the newly appointed Pastor, Father Joseph Breslin. Their faith was tested and strengthened by the challenges that lay ahead.

Together, the parishioners vowed that Queen of the Universe Church would rise from the ashes and committed time and resources to get to the work of rebuilding. With much time and talent dedicated to the rebuilding, a new campaign was underway to build a new church with a collective heart of parishioners acting as one heart beating. People made great sacrifices to rebuild, and indeed, they did. It was a labor of love for their Church, their faith, and the families it served.

Our parents were very strong in their faith and it was important to pass that on to their children. Our parents recognized, while the building was a loss, their faith was strengthened, and that is what was first and foremost. After the fire, with much discernment and sacrifice, they pledged to donate the Sanctuary Crucifix for the “new” church. It was important to them to give back to the parish that had sacrificed so much for them in educating all of their children. The Crucifix is the symbol of our faith and they felt strongly that this would be a fitting contribution to the new church.

Upon the dedication of the new church in September of 1985, the new Queen of the Universe bore witness to countless happy and sad occasions for parish families. Under this Crucifix, many of us in our own family exchanged our wedding vows, baptized our children, our children received their sacraments, and most recently, we buried our mother and our beloved sister, Virginia.

The Sanctuary Crucifix has been a tremendous part of our personal lives and the lives of so many. For some, it is a religious symbol; for us as a family, it represents our faith and the lessons our parents taught us. That faith is something no one can take away from us. Looking up at that cross every week is a reminder for us that faith is to be lived and shared; we couldn’t have had two better examples than who we had in our parents.

When we became aware of the opportunity that Queen of the Universe would be home to the new “Papal Crucifix”, and that Conwell-Egan Catholic was in need of a Crucifix, it seemed fitting our family would like to keep the Sanctuary Crucifix “in the family”, so to speak. Being staunch supporters of Catholic education, our parents educated their nine living children at Bishop Egan and Bishop Conwell. Father Joseph Connolly, T.O.R., Sister Theresa Mary, I.H.M. and Ms. Helen Chaykowski, respective principals of the two schools, fostered the education and the values of Catholic Education. From 1969 to 1989, at least one child from our family walked those halls; sometimes, there were as many as four of us enrolled there at one time! We took part in football, ice hockey, cheerleading, Community Service Corp, Sacristans, French and Glee Clubs and Student Council, forming friendships and learning values that we would take with us throughout our lives. From Egan dances, to CSC trips to the city to hand out toys at Christmas, to the bus trips to Washington, to the Spirit days, to Ring Day, the camaraderie and teamwork that was fostered there was a precious time in our lives that would remain once we left those hallways. Our education cultivated and complemented our faith, which had long ago been instilled in us by our parents. The respect for ourselves and others that was reinforced there was a gift. The education we received helped to shape our characters and the people we are today.

Our parents, if they were here, would be appreciative of the continued opportunity to share this important symbol of faith with another community, particularly one they were so proud of. They were fortunate enough to give this education to all of their children. It is with heartfelt appreciation that the Sanctuary Crucifix will be relocated to Conwell-Egan Catholic High School. We know our parents would be comforted to know the Conwell-Egan community will benefit from it and would be confident that they will take care of it as respectfully and lovingly as it took care of their children’s and grandchildren’s educations.

We are grateful that the Conwell-Egan Catholic School has accepted the Sanctuary Cross and will assimilate it into their faith gatherings.

Sincerely,

Michelle A. Bilardo

On behalf of the Tonrey Family

THE YEAR OF MERCY

The Jubilee Year of Mercy December 8, 2015 through November 20, 2016

What is mercy?

The Old and New Testaments tell us that mercy is God’s love expressed as a response to human suffering. In the words of St. John Paul II, mercy is “love’s second name, the specific manner in which love is revealed and effected vis-à-vis the reality of the evil that is in the world, affecting and besieging man, insinuating itself even into his heart and capable of causing him to ‘perish in Gehenna.’” 1 God’s mercy embraces all human suffering, that which is bodily, emotional and spiritual. Above all, divine mercy is a re-sponse to the worst of man’s suffering, his alienation from God through sin. Mercy – as Christ has presented it in the parable of the prodigal son – has the interior form of the love that in the New Testament is called agape. This love is able to reach down to every prodigal son, to every human misery, and above all to every form of moral misery, sin. When this happens, the person who is the object of mercy does not feel humiliated, but rather found again and ‘restored to value.’2 Mercy is most perfectly revealed and made present in Jesus Christ, whom the Father sent into the world to suffer and die on the cross in atonement for our sins. In Christ Crucified we see with our own eyes the mercy of God made visible, the love that goes to the end to overcome sin and death and restore to man the fullness of his dignity as a child of God. Access to the infinite well-springs of God’s merciful love is found in all areas of the life of the Church, especially in her sacraments, which are in themselves a deeply intimate form of encounter with the living Christ, face of the Father’s mercy. 1 St. John Paul II, Dives in Misericordia 7 2 St. John Paul II, Dives in Misericordia 6

During this sacred time, consider making a commitment to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy each day. This 10 minute prayer uses traditional Rosary beads to meditate upon the infinite mercy of God. Pamphlets for the Chaplet of Divine Mercy are available in the literature rack in Church or you may look up the Chaplet on the Parish App. To learn more about the Chaplet and other ways to cele-brate of the Holy Year, visit the Archdiocesan webpage archphila.org/mercy.

Passage through a Jubilee Holy Door is an efficacious sign of our decision to enter into the life of Jesus Christ and make passage from sin to grace. All are invited to respond to the Jubilee invitation to conver-sion of heart by passing through the holy door! To learn more about Jubilee Holy Doors and Indulgences, visit:

No pierda otro día.
