Python™ - 1100 Series Control Valves
Contour Top GuidedThe Contour Top Guided trims are the preferred choice for avariety of control applications due to their simple construction.Heavy top guided trim provides maximum support to impartcomplete stability. The plug shank is guided at the lowestportion of the bonnet minimizing the effect of side thrust on thevalve plug and eliminating trim vibration.
Multi-Hole Cage Guided - Pressure BalancedThe large guide trims with pressure balancing effect enable thevalve to handle higher DP shut off without employing highpower actuators. The flow characteristic is achieved throughplug contour. Equalizing holes are opened in the plug whicheffectively cancel out the unbalanced force impressed on thetop and bottom of the valve plug.
Pressure balance sealing is attained; 1) At seating surface 2)Through pressure balance seal rings which are fitted on theplug seal applying pressure along the inner wall of the largeguide having a ground, honed and chrome plated surface.
This multi-hole trim also helps with noise attenuation.

Python™ - 1100 Series Control Valves
Multi-Spring Actuators: Series MThe "M" Series control valve actuators are diaphragm actuatorswith pre-compressed multi-spring construction. They arecompact (fewer parts), easy to maintain and quickly reversible. The actuators are suitable for regulating and on/off applications.Various models are available covering small to larger thrustrequirements.
The increasing air pressure supply moves the diaphragm andactuator stem opposing the spring force. With decreasing airpressure supply, the spring force moves the diaphragm in theopposite direction and back to the normal position. To getvarious loading capacities the number of springs are altered.
Accessories• Maximum Diaphragm Pressure:
3.5 bar for Model M and Mp• Actuator travel:
18, 28, 38, 58 mm• Diaphragm:
Nitrile reinforced with Nylon fiber• Operating Temperature Range:
-40° to 80°C• Connections:
1/4” BSPT (F) for Models 00 and 113/8” BSPT (F) for Models 22 and 33
• Permissible Linearity and Hysterisis:±5% of Signal Pressure Range
Features:• Utility - Applicable for regulating and on-off applications
• High Power - Variety of models provide choice for lowand high thrust requirements
• Construction - Due to multi-spring arrangement the actuators are lightweight and compact
• Reversible - The actuators are field reversible withoutdemanding addition or deletion of parts
• Long Service Life - Rigid construction and durablecomponents provide a long lasting service life
• Minimum Maintenance - The actuators are virtuallymaintenance free
• Accuracy - Rolling diaphragm construction providesconstant effective area throughout the stroke
Direct Acting Actuators (Fail Open)The actuator stem moves downward with increasing diaphragmpressure. When this pressure is reduced the opposing springforce moves the actuator stem upward. On air failure, theactuator stem is pulled to the extreme upward position by springforce.
This actuator is suitable for the following:Fail Open - For valves with plugs that push down to closeFail Close - For valves with plugs that push down to open
Reverse Acting Actuators (Fail Close)The actuator stem moves upward with in creasing diaphragmpressure. When this pressure is reduced the opposing springforce moves the actuator stem downward. On air failure, theactuator stem is pushed to extreme downward position byspring force.
This actuator is suitable for the following:Fail Close - For valves with plugs that push down to closeFail Open - For valves with plugs that push down to open

Python™ - 1100 Series Control Valves
Valve SizingTo determine the size of valve you need, calculate the requiredCv value for your application. Once you have calculated therequired Cv, refer to the valve Cv charts on page PTC-301 todetermine the size and trim of valve. Globe style control valveshave the best control in the midrange of the valve's capacity. Itis best to pick a valve so the calculated Cv is between 15% and85% of the valve opening, see page PTC-307. See the formulasbelow for steam and water applications. Consult factory forother types of fluids.
For Saturated Steam Service
When P2 > W = 20 x Cv x ΔP x P2
When P2 < W = 10 x Cv x P1
For Liquid Service
Q =
Cv = Valve flow coefficientG = Specific gravity in kg/dm³Q = Maximum flow capacity of liquid in Nm³/hP1 = Inlet pressure in bar(a)P2 = Outlet pressure in bar(a)ΔP = Pressure drop (P1 - P2) in barW = Maximum flow capacity of steam in kg/h
Actuator Sizing:To determine the required actuator, you need to determine thedifferential pressure (shut off pressure). The shut off pressurefor a pressure reduction application is the pressure differencebetween P1 and P2. The shut off pressure for a temperaturecontrol application is the P1 pressure.
Once you have calculated your shut off pressure, select theactuator model and spring setting range that exceeds yourcalculated shutoff pressure with the trim size previouslyselected. Select reverse acting for air to open (fail close)applications or direct acting for air to close (fail open)applications.
Make sure the required air pressure is available for the springrange selected.
Sizing Example 1:Fluid : Saturated SteamP1 = 10 barP2 = 2 barFlow: 6000 kg/hrActuator: Air to open (Fail Close)
Solution:Valve Selection: Select the correct formula needed to calculate Cv.We need to use the critical flow formula since P2 < P1/2.
W = 10.CV.P1 <=> CV = 50
Refer to the Cv charts on Page 4. Select a 2-1/2" Multi-holecage guided with 2-1/2" Trim. Top bush guided would work aswell, but multi-hole cage was chosen to help with noiseattenuation.
Actuator Selection: Determine your shutoff pressure (DP).DP = 10 - 2 = 8 bar
Refer to chart 303-2 (multi-hole cage guided) and go to the 2-1/2" trim size column. Follow the column until you get to apressure greater than 8 bar, then follow the row horizontally todetermine you need a Model M-22 with the 0,2 - 1 bar springrange.
Complete valve selection is 1100 series, 2-1/2" PN40 Flangewith 2-1/2" Multi-hole cage trim and M-22 actuator with 0,2 - 1bar spring range.
Sizing Example 2:Fluid : Saturated SteamP1 = 9 barFlow: 700 kg/hrActuator: Air to open (Fail Close)
Solution:Since this is a temperature control application and we do not knowthe P2 pressure, we will size the valve with a 30% pressure drop.We need to use the subcritical flow formula.
W = 20.CV. ΔP.P2700 = 20.CV. 2,7.6,3 CV = 8,5
Refer to the Cv charts on Page 4. Select a 1" Contoured topguided with full port trim. The 1" is chosen over the 3/4"because the valve will control best between 15% - 85% ofmaximum valve capacity. The 3/4" valve would be operating at98% of valve capacity.
Actuator Selection:For temperature control applications, the shut off pressure is theP1 pressure. Refer to chart 6-1 (Contoured Top Guided) and goto the 1" trim size column. Follow the column until you get to apressure greater than 9 bar, then follow the row horizontally todetermine you need a Model M-00 with a 0,4 - 1,2 bar springrange.
Complete valve selection is 1100 series 1" BSPT with 1"contoured top guided trim and M-00 actuator with 0,4 - 1,2 bargspring range.

Python™ - 1100 Series Control Valves
Determine the percentage of ‘valve open’ at anycalculated CvYou must first solve for a required Cv with one of the formulason page PTC-306. Using sizing example 2, we calculateda Cv of 8,5 and we chose a 1" contoured top guided valvewith a full 1" trim with a maximum Cv of 13.
Step 1: Locate selected valve trim size in the far right-handcolumn. The maximum Cv for this trim can be found bymoving two columns to the left.
Step 2: Locate the calculated Cv (flow coefficient) on the farleft side.
Step 3: Follow calculated Cv to the right until it intersects withthe curve associated with the trim size found in step 1.
Step 4: From the point of intersection, travel vertically to thebottom of the chart.
This point indicates the percentage of valve open, atthe calculated Cv. In this case the valve will operate at83% of the valves maximum capacity.
The valve has the greatest control between 15 and85% of the valve opening.
