The Python spirit is out to get you. But what is it really after? (Flickr/Tambako The Jaguar) I didn't realize how strong is the spirit of python's chokehold on my region until I started to personally experience the effects of its presence. One of the only named spirits in the Bible, the python spirit is a coiling spirit that works to squeeze out the breathe of life (the Holy Spirit) and cut off your lifeline to God (prayer).To accomplish its deadly agenda, this spirit will remind you of wounds from your past, surround you with ungodly influences that tempt you to compromise the Word of God—or just barrage you with circumstances that knock the wind out of you.Symptoms of a python attack may include weariness, a loss of passion to worship and pray, feeling pressured, overwhelmed, helpless and even hopeless. The severity of those symptoms depends on how long this enemy has been coiling itself around you and how much pressure it has applied.Let me show you this spirit in the Bible. You'll find it in Acts 16:16 when Paul encounters a girl possessed with a spirit of divination. The word divination in this verse comes from the Greek word for puthon, which translates in English as "python." Vine's Dictionary explains how Greek mythology believed the Pythian serpent guarded the oracle of Delphi until Apollo slew it (and then took on the name Pythian). The word was later applied to diviners or soothsayers, inspired by Apollo.

Attacking Your Prayer LifePython can attack anyone. You don't have to be in sin to find python trying to slide under your door. Paul was a man of prayer. The Bible says he spoke in tongues more than anybody else in the Corinthian church (1 Corinthians 14:18)—and probably more than anybody else in the early church.Despite Paul's relationship with Christ and a strong prayer life, he still had to wrestle against principalities and powers and rulers of the darkness of this age and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (see Ephesians 6:12). Paul had to wrestle against python—and so may we. Let's look at Paul's encounter with the python spirit.

Acts 16:16-17 "Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, 'These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.' And this she did for many days".

The python spirit had a stronghold in Philippi. When the man of prayer started heading for the house of prayer, this spirit launched its first attack against him—a distraction followed by a full-blown trial that aimed to take him out of his purpose. Python knows it has no authority in a city that prays in the presence of God, so it works to distract people from praying so they can't fulfil their purpose.Python would rather watch you lick your wounds than pray to a healing God. Python would rather hear you complain or gossip than take your problems to a miracle-working God. Python would rather distract you with attacks, trials and persecutions than see you press into a gracious God for deliverance. Again, python's ultimate goal is to put you in bondage and thwart your purpose. You may be going through the motions but you feel dead on the inside because python has squeezed the life out of you.

Loosed From Python's GripWhen you rise up in your Christ-given authority against python, the battle ensues. Paul cast the demon out of the girl, which meant her masters could no longer profit from her false prophecies. "They seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities" (Acts 16:19). From there, they were falsely accused, had their clothes torn off, were beaten with rods and thrown into prison with stocks on their feet.Paul and Silas were in physical pain. They had been publicly humiliated. They were slandered and maligned. And they were in the grip of the python spirit. At this point, they had several options: They could lie there and lick their wounds. They could complain to one another about their situation. They could meditate on the persecution and decide to abandon their purpose in exchange for being set free. But they didn't do any of that. Thank God, they left us a model for how to break free from the python spirit.

Acts 16:25-26 "But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed".

Prayer and praise are what python is trying to stop, but prayer and praise will set you free.In next week's article, we'll take a closer look at the python spirit and what it takes to combat it in a region. Florida has 43 houses of prayer across the state—more per capita than any other state—but the python spirit is so active that the Everglades are overflowing with these dangerous snakes. What It Truly Takes to Overcome the Python Spirit

The python spirit may be powerful, but it can be defeated! (Flickr/Tambako the Jaguar) The python spirit is in the cross-hairs of many spiritual warriors, and practical revelation about how this demon operates has surfaced in recent years. Still, there are many who aren't aware of this enemy's devices. The previous article: What the Python Spirit Really Wants opened the eyes of those who may not realize this coiling spirit could be working to squeeze out the breath of life (the Holy Spirit) and cut off your lifeline to God (prayer).Before we go any further, let's do a quick review of last week's column so you can see this spirit at work in the Bible. You'll find it in Acts 16:16 when Paul encounters a girl possessed with a spirit of divination. The word divination in this verse comes from the Greek word for puthon, which translates in English as "python." That's why many call this evil force the python spirit. Here's the Scripture in context:

Acts 16:16-17 "Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, 'These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.' And this she did for many days".

The prayer-hating python spirit drew attention to Paul and Silas in a hostile land, distracted them from their apostolic mission, and ultimately persecuted them sorely, even putting them in literal bondage. But Paul and Silas didn't stay there. They prayed and praised their way through—and so can you. But not just any type of prayer will root this spirit out of your midst.

After You Put on Your ArmorIn spiritual warfare circles we talk a lot about the armor of God. Some of us even symbolically get dressed in our armor every day. We've memorized Ephesians 6:10-17—but a freedom key is in verse 18: "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints “That's right, wearing heavy battle armor is not enough without prayer—and the right kind of prayer. Remember, Paul was on his way to the house of prayer when python attacked. Python doesn't want you in the place of prayer in the presence of God because when you are engaging in Spirit-led prayer you're doing damage to the kingdom of darkness. The enemy knows that your authority in prayer in Christ's Name is what sets you free from his oppression—and sets others around you free. Scripture makes it clear:

Acts 16:25-28 "But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed. And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself. But Paul called with a loud voice, saying, 'Do yourself no harm, for we are all here'".

Rooting Python Out of a CityThe prayers and praise of Paul and Silas set the captives free, but that spirit of python was still reigning over the city when they left on the next leg of their mission. The python spirit can reign in a life or a region where people are ignorant of the devil's devices (see 2 Corinthians 2:11).We need revelation from the Holy Spirit about what is operating in our lives and in our territories in order to ultimately root it out and set up a guard against its re-entry by our authority in Christ. Now here's the rub: Although many have come to understand python's life-squeezing, breath-stealing tactics, we too often fail to engage Spirit-led prayer that would render this principality powerless.

Manifestation in the NaturalThis python spirit is a major influence in Florida, where we have more houses of prayer per capita than any other state. Python is so spiritually active in our state that it has manifested with an overrun of natural pythons in the Everglades. Experts point to as many as 100,000 Burmese pythons in the Florida Everglades that are reproducing rapidly. This snake is driving down populations of opossums, bobcats and raccoons and even swallows deer and alligators whole.

Although reciting rote prayers from a book may push back darkness for a moment, ultimately that spiritual-warfare strategy isn't going to deliver you—and keep you free—from python's grip. Freedom from python demands a deeper intercession. It starts with repentance and works its way into travailing prayer by the leading of the Spirit of God (Romans 8:26-27).What do we do, practically speaking? We need to pray to the righteous Lord who "has cut in pieces the cords of the wicked" (see Ps. 129:4) that python has coiled around us. We need to repent for our sins—and the sins of our cities—that have allowed python a stronghold so God can surround us with songs of deliverance in His presence (Psalm 32). We have authority in Christ to cut in pieces this coiling spirit but, again, it often takes travailing prayer with the Spirit of God to free the body from the head of the snake in a region.

A Spirit-Inspired Prayer Key to Birthing Your Destiny Jennifer LeClaire 2

When it comes to spiritual warfare—and intercession—many times we don't know how to pray as we ought. We sense spiritual oppression trying to discourage us, demons harassing people we love, or principalities settling over our city like a dark rain cloud—but we don't always have revelation about the enemy we're fighting.

When that happens, I always do one thing: pray in the Spirit—and I don't stop praying in the Spirit until that oppression lifts or until I have a Spirit-inspired strategy to wrestle against what's wrestling against me. I wrestle from a place of victory, but I don't wrestle presumptuously. I need the Holy Spirit to show me how to pray—and sometimes that prayer includes travail. This is scriptural:

Romans 8:26-27 "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God".

What Are These Groanings?Notice that Paul wrote about "groanings which cannot be uttered." Here he's talking about one manifestation of travailing prayer. The Greek word for "groanings" in that Scripture is "stenagmos," which simply means a groaning or a sigh.Of course, the Holy Spirit is doing the groaning through us. We can't work up this type of prayer by our will. It's a spiritual response to a prayer burden. Travail has to be Spirit-led, or it's just soulish or fleshly. Nevertheless, travail is a genuine form of prayer that can break through when nothing else does. The Greek word "travail" is found several times in the New Testament (and many more times in the Old).When Jesus talked about the pregnant woman who had sorrow in travail (see John 16:21), He was referring to "tikto," which means "to bring forth, bear, produce (fruit from the seed); of a woman giving birth; of the earth bringing forth its fruits." But when Paul was talking about interceding for the Thessalonians (see 1 Thessalonians 2:9), the Greek word for travail is "mochthos," which means a hard and difficult labor, toil, travail, hardship, distress.Hebrew words for travail include "yalad," which also brings in the connotation of helping: "to cause or help to bring forth; to assist or tend to as a midwife" (See Genesis 38:27); "t@la'ah," which implies seeking deliverance from toil, hardship, distress, weariness (see Exodus 18:8); "'inyan," which refers to an occupation, task, job (see Ecclesiastes 1:13); "'amal" which refers to toil, trouble, labor (see Isaiah 23:4); and "challah," which means to be or become grieved, be or become sorry (see Isaiah 53:11).Travail That Brings DeliveranceMost of the time, travailing prayer is a birthing prayer—it births something you've been carrying in your heart that God wants to deliver. But it can also be a deliverance prayer. In this verse, travail is used in a deliverance context:

Exodus 18:8 "And Moses told his father-in-law all that the Lord had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel's sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the Lord delivered them".

Sometimes, when the enemy gets an advantage on us (see 2 Corinthians 2:11), another person, or even a region, the Spirit of God will lead you into travailing prayer. You'll serve as a midwife and toil in prayer to help bring forth God's purposes—to birth His Will in the earth—which may also mean deliverance from the kingdom of darkness.Many times before travailing prayer comes upon you, you'll feel grieved, heavy or otherwise burdened. Less experienced intercessors may believe they are under spiritual attack—and they may be—but it's often the Holy Spirit moving on your spirit to engage in travail with Him. Notice I say "with Him." Again, you can't stir up travail in your soul or your flesh. It is Spirit-inspired. The important thing to know is that when you sense this coming on you, you need to yield to the Holy Spirit to birth His purposes.Travail is not prayer led by emotions, though you may appear emotional as you enter travail with weeping and wailing and groaning like a woman birthing a child. Because of its intensity, some churches have relegated intercession to a back room in the church and essentially thrown the baby out with the breakthrough bathwater. But it's vital that we cooperate with the Holy Spirit when He wants to use us as a midwife to birth or deliver, even if you have to excuse yourself from the prayer meeting to avoid confusing those who are not familiar with this type of intercession.

Letting the Holy Spirit Pray Through YouWith all this in mind, let's look at Romans 8 again:

Romans 8:22-27 "For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God" .

The Will of God is to birth His purposes. The Will of God is to deliver people from the bonds of Satan. The Will of God is that we cooperate with His Holy Spirit, laboring in all manner of prayer to prevail in the wrestling match against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this age, and spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places (see Ephesians 6:12). Sometimes all manner of prayer includes travail.

THE PYTHON SPIRIT - PRAYER TO BIND AND CAST IT OUT PYTHON OR DIVINATION SPIRIT AND IT'S ANTICS

Python is referred to in Acts as a spirit of divination. We know python as a powerful snake that constricts and squeezes its prey to death slowly. Just like the snake, the spirit of Python gets around its victim, which can be a person, family, church or area, and he slowly squeezes the life out of them. This spirit works today just as it did against Paul in Acts 16:16 in Macedonia. When you pray to possess the land for God, the spirit of divination (python) begins to fight against you. His manifestations may be weariness, fatigue, confusion and frustration. His actions in churches, ministry, finances or your home are felt as he begins to tighten his

grip on people. People leave their circumstances because he manifests heaviness, depression, oppression, and pressure. When the constriction gets stronger, the result is discouragement, factions and divisions. Other spirits that work with python are beguiling spirits, seducing spirits, Jezebel spirits, controlling spirits and manipulating spirits. We can and must break their power in the Name of Jesus. If you have never exercised the authority of the Name of Jesus, you need to pray for God to give you a spirit of boldness. When you battle the enemy, you must use your weapons of the Blood of Jesus, the Word of God, and in the authority of the Name of Jesus. There must be no fear but you must be bold. The ruling spirit of Python will many times hide behind other demons but he is controlling their actions. Generals in an army don't expose themselves.Divination means using witchcraft to try to discover future events or cause future events to happen by supernatural means. When you see the spirit of divination (python) operating, you will also see false prophesying, and a profit motive. Money will be attached just as it was in Acts16:16. Look for financial problems. Python prevents business deals from closing favorably or he prevents sales from occurring.

Church finances may dry up or constrict, trying to choke the church. We must learn to differentiate fiction from fact and unreality from reality because the difference between the truth and a falsehood can be very subtle.When the python spirit is operating, look for heaviness, sorrow, depression and oppression. There will be manipulation involved and people will not be completely open to correction. They will try to control every situation. Customs and traditions may be strong and have to be torn down. Visions and creativity will be choked. Python will cause people to become fearful, weak and weary. People will start questioning their own vision, position and calling. He tries to squeeze out of you everything God has called you to do.The ruling spirit of Python will many times hide behind other demons but he is controlling their actions. Generals in an army don't expose themselves. Python usually has several spirits closely aligned that he controls. There is often found Beguiling spirits. To beguile means to deceive, allure, and entice. They work to cause division in the Body of Christ. They often use charm and charisma to cause diversion. They try to pull you away from Jesus and the leaders God places over you. They pull you from one church to another church. There may be Seducing spirits such as those that draw a person to a cultist. The cultist may be operating under seducing spirits that draws people. Seducing spirits use lust, greed and pride to lead people astray.Such spirits influence individuals in a church to bring about false worship and hurt the church. A Jezebel spirit in another person can make you feel drained when you are around them. When Python is operating look for a spirit of Grief to try to get a foothold. He always tries to bring spirits of Bitterness, Sorrow, and Disappointments so that you end up feeling like everything is falling apart. Encourage yourself in prayer and begin to pull them down. Don't complain but express your love to God. Worship God and pray in the Spirit. Remember Python wants to create confusion, so you will allow doubt to manifest in your mind.Become involved in as much praise and worship as you can to maintain the victory. Remember who you are battling against. It is not flesh and blood. Stay in prayer as much as you can and remain obedient to God and His Word. Become accountable to a church and pastor.

Seven po i n ts of important observat ions (concerning the spirit of Python):

1. Remember, the serpent in Genesis was a beguiling one: seeking to convince Eve that God said something that He didn’t say and twisting even the intend of God’s Word.

2. This spirit will use religious traditions, the law, and self-righteousness to control/restrict and manipulate people within the church.

3. Because idolatry, deception, and divination are the foundation of this spirit --- watch false doctrine and even the refusal to respect Godly authority. Read 2 Corinthians 10. Utilize these scriptures over the enemy. “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; (vs. 5)” Watch mind control.

4. The assignment of this enemy is to break down God’s plans and purposes by attacking various individuals and trying to cause confusion/strife amongst the group that is moving forward to accomplish the work of God. (Undermining leadership, rebellion).

5. A python is known to lay eggs in many places—when in intercession, and while breaking its power ---tread upon the enemy’s territory and destroy the eggs as well. God has given us the “power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” (Luke 10:19).

6. Isaiah 59 gives a lot of insight into the serpent’s mindset and activity. There are also keys to destroy his lair (den). The word cockatrice means poisonous snake or adder. Strong’s 06848 Hebrew word: Tsepha. (read also Proverbs 23:23-33, Isaiah 11:6-12, Jeremiah chapter 8 for even greater insight on how to combat this spirit).

7. Remember, this enemy feeds upon fear—Utilize the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God to deal with the lies/deception coming out of the mouth of this enemy. Hebrews 4:12 - Pray also for strong discernment.
