Agfa Graphics Launches the Advantage N-TR VHS Platesetter for High-Volume Newspaper Printers

Agfa Graphics today introduced the new high-speed platesetter for the high-volume newspaper market. The Advantage N TR VHS (Trolley Load, Very High-Speed) produces up to 400 plates per hour, which is 50 plates faster than the Advantage N TR HS.

Thanks to the increased speed, the Advantage N TR VHS can allow newspaper publishers to deliver the latest news and last-minute offers to their daily readers with sharper production deadlines. It will also help newspaper publishers to replace multiple, slower CtP engines with

faster, yet fewer units. This not only saves on new CtP investments but also on processing equipment or punch and bending machines. Landa Alters the UX LandscapeWhile touchscreen TECHNOLOGY and UX innovation has come a long way in other industries, such as automotive, healthcare and financial services, the PRINTING press room experience has remained largely unchanged for many years. Digital Goes Heavy Metal The metallic finish is gaining popularity as new options promises to cut down on processes and open opportunities for digital printing. Sha Jumari explores.

The true metallic look with a high sheen has long been a coveted finish, especially for this region. Beyond exuding a luxurious feel, Asian markets deem the metallic look, gold especially, to convey prosperity and success. From labels and packaging, book covers and greeting cards, its uses are wide-ranging.

Today’s climate calls for short-run, on-demand and personalised printing; applications that all fit with digital printing. Conventional methods of producing the metallised surface include offset, screen printing and hot foil stamping. These methods are often time-consuming and laborious. There are now new digital innovations that aim to significantly shorten processes to better address the needs of the market.

The first half of the year witnessed Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific unveiling its latest production colour press, the Color

1000i, a first in the industry to offer both gold and silver dry inks. Aimed at the high-end professional printing market, the production press uses ellipsoid-shaped toner inks with flat reflective pigments. When the image

is fused onto the media, the pigment particles lay parallel to the media, allowing for higher reflection of light from the pigment. This achieves a high sheen for a true metallic appearance.

“Having the metallic ink directly within the digital printing machine helps cut out processes. The gold and silver inks widen up the creative capabilities and applications, such as business cards, certificates, photo applications, and direct mail,” said Yamazaki Toru, general manager, production go-to-market, Fuji Xerox Asia Pacific.

A significant feature of the dry inks is that the reflective pigments do not allow light to pass through. This prevents the colour of the underlying media from showing through to allow printing on any media, including those with printed text and even dark-coloured paper.

“The inks can be integrated into personalised communication. It boosts customer perception of quality through eye-catching prints and can facilitate premium customisation that will help the consumer feel more connected to the brand,” Yamazaki continued.

“The advantage of metallic printing is the emotional impact,” concurred Junichi Arai, Operating Officer,

Konica Minolta Business Solutions Japan.

“The role of print in general is changing, where IT media is replacing paper communication. However, metallic printed communication has the ability to bring out the true emotion of the message - better than email or any online media. From that point of view, metallic printing has a good paper- or print-only role. That’s where the value of metallic print is,” said Arai.

Konica Minolta announced that it will be placing the spotlight on the JETVarnish 3D and iFOIL at the upcoming IGAS 2015 in Japan to address the needs of the graphic communication industry in the region.

The iFOIL module utilises a new digital process that can produce hot foiling without the use of dies, plates or make-ready. This process can create new customisation applications not available through traditional spot UV coating methods due to the increased throughput for flat spot UV jobs and 3D raised effects.

Another foiling method that incorporates digital print is the DM-Liner by Kurz Group, recently debuted at Xeikon Café Packaging Innovations 2015. Through a process called Digital Metal, the DM Liner combines digital printing with coating and metal-transfer to create metallised surfaces. The printed product can also be overprinted with UV or digital printing toner, to allow metallic colours besides gold or silver, to be produced.

Xeikon worked closely with Kurz to develop the solution to process high gloss or holographic digital metal foils using toner: “The trick is that our toner works together with a specific foil developed by Kurz. Our toner basically acts as a glue for the foil, that can be printed on to the material in any shape at all. Spaces that do not require a metallic finish are masked with a varnish,” explained Frank Jacobs, marketing communications manager, Xeikon.

Since pre-printing with the toner is digitally controlled, making it possible to include personalised content, serial numbers or individualised design elements: “This is a unique way to protect from counterfeiting as a brand protection feature,” added Jacobs

The latest version of XMF, V6.1, is a powerful and flexible production hub incorporating Mercury RIP Architecture – a technology for high speed operation developed by Adobe. As a result, XMF V6.1 achieves dramatic improvements in file PROCESSING times, harnessing the Mercury RIP Architecture to allow parallel processing of multiple jobs and reach a processing capability that is approximately 10 times greater than previous systems. This allows PRINTINGcompanies to utilise their output devices more effectively. In the event that output to a platesetter, proofer or digital printer is required simultaneously, XMF V6.1 can

reduce processing ‘standby time’ to a minimum, ensuring that each output device is used efficiently.

Furthermore, as a single XMF instance is capable of executing the RIP processing for multiple platesetters, the number of RIP devices can be greatly reduced, resulting in easier management and lower costs. It also means that the results of the job will always be consistent – even if produced on different output devices – resulting in a highly reliable workflow.

FASTEST DIGITAL LABEL PRESS IN ITS CLASS The innovation delivered by the Xeikon Cheetah, the most important advancement for the digital label MARKET in 15 years, has received its first industry recognition – the EDP Award for Best Label Printing Solution.

Xeikon Cheetah, a five-color digital label press, runs at up to 30 meters per minute, making it 56% faster than any other member of the Xeikon digital label press family. Its print quality is enhanced by the unique Cheetah toner, specifically developed for high speeds and based on Xeikon’s proven ICE toner technology. It complies with FDA regulations for food contact and offers the ability to print opaque white toner in a single pass. In addition, the exceptionally low fusing temperature for this toner means that a wider range of substrates can be digitally printed at very high levels of quality. The availability of custom toners also expands the color gamut that can be achieved, especially when printing brand colors where a process match is difficult to achieve.

The EDP Awards were established by the EDP Association which was founded in October 2006 by the publishers of six TRADE magazines with a primary editorial focus on digital production. The EDP Awards acknowledge the value of R&D in the industry and recognize the best products of the past year.

The new name helps the print shop market its commercial printing services to outside customers.

"We have always been somewhat special as a lot of our work, even today, is political printing. We can now produce any kind of political material, from direct mail, postcards and door hangers to flyers or post- ers, with guaranteed quick turnaround. Our clients include political

Design is seeking a sales representative to grow the business, particularly with local and na- tional corporations."Like all printers, we are seeing the size of jobs constantly diminishing. At the same time the demand for consistent quality is increasing. To be able to provide consistency most of our printing is being produced to GRA-CoL industry standards.

Some people were surprised when we started looking for a digital high-volume production press last year with print volumes in general being at an all-time low. But we saw an opening. With print-on-demand becoming the rule, and the use of more and more variable data, there is no alternative to digital printing.

We looked at a number of different presses but we have had a long suc- cessful business partnership with Xerox and the iGen3 provided what we were looking for in cost-effectiveness and quality. One of the challenges however, was absolute color consistency on, and between,

the digital and conventional presses. Digital quality had to be as close as possible to our offset press output since our clients want high quality printed materials and do not particularly care about the process.

Xerox introduced us to CGS and the ORIS Press Matcher Pro solution. We did a number of tests and found that it perfectly suited our needs. It was one of the key factors in our decision to purchase the iGen3. ORIS Press Matcher allows us to produce consistent color in our digital department, closely matching the output of our conventional presses. As well as on the iGen3 we are using ORIS for the Xerox DocuColor 250

equipped with an inline saddle stitch finisher. With ORIS we can now run small jobs on it with the quality being identical to the larger equipment.

We see personalized printing as a perfect fit to our finishing and mailing facilities and are currently considering an option to the FreeFlow Print Server that Xerox has recently introduced. With the Xerox Device Link In- tegrator we can use our ORIS system to generate Device Link profiles and feed them into the FreeFlow Print Server to color manage data on-the-fly; an ideal way to use the superior ORIS color management for VDP jobs."

As a sister show to China Print – the Beijing International Printing Technology Exhibition, Print China has been held once every four years since 2007 and is a comprehensive show of the printing industry that is among the top shows in attracting customers.

This year marked the third edition of the show, which was held in the Guangdong Modern International Ex-hibition Center in Dongguan, a lead-ing hub of the printing industry in China.

COMMERCIAL PRINTINGLithrone G37 (H-UV-equipped four-color 37-inch sheetfed offset press GL-437 + H-UV)This show marks the debut of the Lithrone G37, a high performance ma-chine in 37-inch format, the ideal for Chinese paper sizes. Through stable operation achieved by H-UV printing and coordination of various automatic devices at the 15,000 sph maximum printing speed, this press offers the

power to address needs such as short turnaround times, a diverse work mix, short runs and low cost in publishing and commercial printing. In the dem-onstration, the Lithrone G37 printed the museum’s flyers/postcards using Komori’s standard K-Supply H-UV ink. Many visitors took the just printed samples and were astounded by H-UV’s instant curing. In addition, the tablet-ready K-Station 4 Printing Task Control Software was introduced in the demonstration; its ability to per-form progress management simply with a tablet computer was seen with deep interest.

Lithrone G40 (H-UV-equipped four-color 40-inch sheetfed offset press GL-440 + H-UV)

Equipped with various automatic de-vices and incorporating special speci-fications, this machine performed H-UV printing with K-Supply ink demonstrating short turnaround, high productivity capabilities and printing with complex impositions of multiple items such as gang-run jobs for web printers and trading card work, giv-ing visitors the feeling of the ‘Offse-tOnDemand’ revolution advanced by Komori. Job changeover time during the demonstration was measured by a stopwatch, and the high speed pro-vided by Full-APC (Fully Automatic Plate Changer) and the color tone and register adjustment offered by KHS-AI gained a great deal of interest. The possibility of one-man operation was shown in the Chinese market, where

By means of color matching with K-ColorSimula-tor, the independently developed CMS software, visitors were able to see the printing item from the Lithrone G40 and the output sheet from the Im-premia C61 toner-based digital print-ing system and confirm the high preci-sion of color matching.

PACKAGE PRINTINGTo meet the expectations of China’s growing package printing market and solve the issues of package printing companies, Komori exhibited two offset presses specified for packaging work under the banner ‘KOMORI PACKAGE SOLUTIONS.’

Lithrone G40(UV-equipped six-color 40-inch sheetfed offset press with in-line coat-er GL-640 + C + UV)Equipped with various special specifi-cations, including UV, an in-line coat-er and a new dryer, this press switched between printing on metallized paper and film each day and visitors saw its wide-ranging printing adaptability with heavy stock (package printing) and special substrates (added value printing) along with many examples.

For the demonstration using metal-lized paper, four-color process print-ing was first performed on coated board; then on the metallized paper, white was laid down by the first unit, black, cyan, magenta and yellow were applied by units 2 through 5, drip-off

varnish was applied by unit 6, and fi-nally gloss coating was applied by the in-line coater, resulting in the drip-off embossing appearance. Visitors could compare the printing with just four colors on coated board and the same image with drip-off embossing on metallized paper and confirm the high added value package printing.

In the demonstration using film, five-color package printing was first per-formed using a special green laid down by the first unit and four-color process colors by the following units on coated board. After changeover, film printing was performed with a white applied as the base by unit 6. This demonstration using a new dryer developed by Ko-mori and the chamber blade coater at-tracted a great deal of interest.

Lithrone SX29 (IR-equipped five-color 29-inch sheetfed offset press with in-line coat-er LSX-529 + C + IR)Having a maximum printing speed of 16,500 sph, a maximum sheet size of 610 x 750 mm and equipped with a new dryer and special specifications, the Lithrone SX29 is capable of print-ing on heavy stock and high added value printing, such as package and label work, in the small-format press market. In demonstrations of packages for cosmetics and foods, the machine performed high quality one-pass print-ing with 4C and one special color and printing for food packaging using a vegetable varnish.

The Impremia C61 is a toner-based digital printing system that can per-form a wide range of work with the high image quality of its 1,200 dpi output resolution. Color matching of offset printing and the digital printing system was introduced by means of K-ColorSimulator (Easy color matching software), Komori’s independently de-veloped CMS solution. Visitors could actually see a matching comparison of the output sheet of the Impremia C61 and a printed sheet from the four-color Lithrone G40 during the demon-stration of the GL-440.In addition, the Impremia IS29 inkjet digital printing system was introduced with video and printing samples.In the Digital Printing Sample Corner in the booth, varied samples, including a long printed item output by the Im-premia C61, were displayed, and many visitors took some home.

DoNet CornerThe latest Komori technologies, such as KHS-AI, K-ColorSimulator and K-PressNavi (navigation system that supports standardization of printing), were introduced.Visitor interest in KHS-AI and K-ColorSimulator was high, and they listened attentively to the explanations of booth staff while actually operating the software.

PESP/K-SupplyThe lineup of consumables and equip-ment as well as retrofit products best for Komori presses selected for print quality and to address the higher lev-el and greater complexity of printing conditions were introduced.Actual K-Supply rollers, K-Supply H-UV ink, blanket washing device ret-rofits and presoaked cloth for blanket washing were exhibited, and questions for technical specialists continued without letup.

Given the frequent mix of small to very large-sized jobs Joemay looked for a press offering the highest level of automation and the shortest makeready times. KBA was thus able to win points with its Rapida 106 makeready world champion against tough competition from Japan. The experts from Niigata were bowled over in particular by the savings in waste thanks to QualiTronic ColorControl. Further features include automatic plate change, water cooling, inking unit temperature control and the

On 22 April a Rapida 106 with four PRINTING units went live at printing house Joemay in Niigata, on the west coast of Japan, only three weeks after it was delivered.

The four-colour press for the Japanese market is somewhat of a novelty for KBA as the presses going to Japan are usually longer. Nevertheless, the world’s makeready champion won over all at Joemay with its fast job change and the Rapida 106 outstanding performance of up to 20,000sph.

Founded in 1995, the family-run firm with approx. 70 employees focuses primarily on commercial printing. However, Joemay doesn’t think of itself solely as a printing company, but more a communication company given its broad service offerings ranging from campaign planning, production of contents and advertising material to PR services for customers. Along with printing catalogues, brochures, flyers and posters, challenging packaging

networking via LogoTronic CIPLinkX.

Raised by 450mm (17.7in) the four-colour press often runs at speeds of up to 20,000sph and is currently the only high-speed press in Japan delivering this high level performance. A digital speedometer is used by owner Takeaki Kato to draw the company’s employees, customers and business partners attention to this.

Shareholders approve new company structureThe agenda of the KBA 90th annual general meeting focused on the current status of the restructuring programme Fit@All, the shareholders’ decision regarding the proposed change to the group’s legal and management structure and personnel changes on the shareholder’s side to the supervisory board. This was in addition to the company’s figures for 2014 and the

first quarter of 2015. The AGM at the Vogel Convention Center (VCC) in Würzburg was chaired by supervisory board chairman Dr Martin Hoyos.

In his speech to the shareholders, KBA president and CEO Claus Bolza-Schünemann emphasised the advantages of a de-central company structure. This stipulates converting the parent Koenig & Bauer AG into a management holding after spinning-off four operating subsidiaries for the business fields digital & web (KBA-Digital & Web Solutions), sheetfed (KBA-Sheetfed Solutions), security press activities (KBA-NotaSys) and production (KBA-Industrial Solutions). Bolza-Schünemann: “We have been working intensely on this structural change since September 2013 and we are convinced that the improvements to cost and earnings transparency associated with the spin-offs as well as the internal customer supply relationships will have a positive effect on our company and earnings.” A large majority of the shareholders agreed with the management board’s proposal.

The four spun-off companies will have a German legal status of an AG & Co. KG (limited partnership) with the parent and holding as a public limited company and sole general partner. The holding company’s management board, which primarily will take over strategic and central tasks, is to be reduced from six to three members. Along with president and CEO Claus

Bolza-Schünemann, CFO Dr Mathias Dähn and CRO Dr Andreas Pleßke will remain on the management board. The three other board members Michael Kummert, Christoph Müller und Ralf Sammeck will become managing directors of the operating companies in their respective fields. This is in addition to Lothar Hohmann as managing director of the security press business in Würzburg. Following the approval by the AGM and the entry of the new companies in the commercial register, the new structure will be implemented from 1 January 2015 retrospectively.

New supervisory board MEMBERSThe AGM appointed Dr Gisela Lanza (41), university professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and head of the Institute of Production Science (wbk) at KIT, and Carl Ferdinand Oetker (42), MANAGING partner at FO Holding GmbH and managing director at WINK Verwaltungsgesellschaft, as supervisory board members. They replace longstanding members Baldwin Knauf (75) and Reinhart Siewert (77) who left of their own accord.

Speaking at a media conference in Tokyo, the Japan Graphic Arts Suppliers Committee confirmed that IGAS 2015 announced the line-up and general theme of the upcoming International Graphic Arts Show (IGAS) 2015. The exhibition is set to take place over six days from 11 September to 16 September 2015 at the East Halls of the Tokyo Big Sight.

Domestic media delegates as well as international journalists from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan, were in attendance. The organising committee aims to increase participation from the Southeast Asian region.

“We target to double the number of visitors from overseas, including those from Southeast Asia, so that IGAS can truly be an international exhibition,” said Makoto Nishioka, secretary general, Japan Printing Machinery Association.

“We aim to make IGAS 2015 an exhibition beyond a conventional exhibition on print machinery. We would like IGAS 2015 to be an exhibition which provides problem-solving solutions,” Nishioka continued. “We would also like to provide an opportunity for communication for print by involving not only the print-related companies but also the purchasing parties and brand-owners.”

Organisers also announced that from 2016 onwards, IGAS would now be held under a three-year cycle. According to organisers, the change was made to correspond with drupa’s change from a four-year to a three-year cycle. The committee has removed its

domestic edition, Japan Graphic Arts Show (JGAS) from its event lineup to focus resources on IGAS.

To date, the number of participating exhibitors is 323, using 2,605 units of booth space. A wide range of exhibitors from the pre-press, print and post-press fields will be exhibiting. The digital print industry especially, is being represented by a significant amount of companies. Organisers added that exhibitors from China have already taken up 109 spaces.

Amongst the list of exhibitors who have confirmed attendance include: Fujifilm, Screen, Komori, HP, Canon, Miyakoshi, Horizon and Ryobi.

HP intends to exhibit its technology and application innovations with the full range its Graphics Solutions portfolio on display, including end-to-end complement of solution partners. Additionally, the 6th edition of DScoop Asia will be held in Japan from 13 to 15 September, to coincide with IGAS2015. HP is the executive sponsor of DScoop, a global community of HP Graphic Arts users that organises annual educational and networking events for its members.

Fujifilm will place the spotlight on its new CTP system total solution, ‘SUPERIA’, which claims to help the offset industry to improve profitability. Screen will be showing its latest inkjet printing system, the Truepress

Jet520HD and its label printer, the Jet L350UV.

IGAS is highly regarded as one of the major global exhibitions on print machinery held in Japan, showcasing cutting-edge machinery, technology and services, whilst providing a platform for active networking.

2015 Theme: Print + InnovationThe general theme of the exhibition this year is ‘Print + Innovation’. The 2015 edition will categorise event spaces into five themes: +Session, +Tour, +Future, +Live Studio and +International.

At +Session, panel discussions and seminars on themes directly related to business will be delivered. In +Tour, touring the highlight areas of the exhibition site will be conducted for visitors. The programs will primarily be conducted in Japanese, although separate tours in Mandarin and Korean are currently in the works.

+Future will feature exhibitors in categories and fields that differ from the conventional, such as 3D printing, paper electronics, colour universal designs, flexography, and print packaging.

To give visitors an overview of IGAS 2015, +Live Studio will be a dedicated space to broadcast information on the exhibition, such as event highlights. The space will also spotlight small-scale exhibitors and those in newly introduced categories. The area will also feature multiple talk show segments to cover topics of interest.

Japan’s famous ‘Omotenashi’, or Japanese hospitality, will be on display at the +International area. To better serve visitors from overseas, this area is a networking space that will provide detailed exhibitor information and business-matching services by professional coordinators.

Epson launches new label printer for manufacturing sectorThe unveiling of the new ColorWorks C7510 commercial label printer at MTA2015 signals a growing demand for colour-on-demand labeling for the manufacturing sector. Sha Jumari reports.

As manufacturing is increasingly strengthening the Asian economy, the need for on-demand colour labeling for the sector grows. In response to this growing demand, Epson showcased the new ColorWorks C7510 commercial label printer at the recently concluded Manufacturing and Technology Asia 2015 (MTA2015) conference in Singapore.

The ColorWorks C7510 is Epson’s on-demand colour label printer that uses Epson’s proprietary PrecisionCore thin film piezo print head technology. Designed for continuous printing, the C7510 is currently only available in the Asia region. It is able to print a maximum of 300 mm/5 at resolutions of 600 dpi. Users can potentially

save up to 50% on labeling costs while increasing productivity. The ColorWorks C7510 is purported to run twice as fast as older printers.

“We feel there is a big market for Colour-on-Demand (COD) labelling here in the region, because of the obvious benefits in cost reduction and productivity. While manufacturing production in China has slowed, ASEAN has grown, with foreign direct investments in 2013 exceeding that of China by 9.2%,” said Ng Ngee Khiang, general manager, Epson Southeast Asia.

“Taken as a whole, ASEAN could be considered the seventh largest economy in the world with a combined gross domestic product of US$2.4 Trillion. It’s the fourth largest exporting region accounting for 7% of global exports. Furthermore, manufacturers in US and Europe are finding a need to move their production closer to Asian consumer markets and are seeking to plant their flags in Singapore. These are all opportunities for COD Labelling market to grow,” Ng continued.

One of the most pertinent impacts of COD labeling is the ability of manufacturers to print multiple colour label variations easily, improving product identification and productivity.

Users also do not have to stock up on expensive pre-printed colour labels that may never be used. This would especially benefit manufacturers and suppliers that are required to adhere to the Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals.

Prior to COD, they would have to rely on the lengthy system of ordering pre-printed colour labels, loading them onto black and white labels, and ensuring every label was correctly sized. COD labeling will reduce this entire process to a single step, effectively cutting down on time, labour and costs.

Industries that adhere to GHS standards include chemical, oil and gas. Other sectors that can benefit COD labeling include the pharmaceutical and food packaging industries. Ng added that small and medium enterprises are also showing interest in COD in order to reduce costs of third part label supplies.

“Colour-on-Demand printing provides a number of benefits for any business, not just manufacturing,” explained Ng. “The most prominent is the reduction of overhead costs. Manufacturers no longer need to deal with the cost of pre-printed labels, which might end up being unused and wasted, and SMEs do not have to deal with third party

label suppliers who, very often, have a minimum order requirement.”

According to Epson, a new industrial grade colour label printer that caters for higher print volume users will be launched in the region in the third

quarter of the year. Ng concluded: “This new model is 3 times faster than current model and even more reliable. We are confident it will further improve the productivity and efficiency of businesses significantly.”

Muller Martini China Hosts Successful Open House in Shenzhen

Muller Martini demonstrated how fast the Ventura MC 160 compact book sewing machine can be changed over from one job to the next. The numerous visitors were visibly impressed by the state-of-the-art technological features, such as servo technology with a patented drive design, servo-controlled thread tension, combined staggered stitching at the push of the button and the active thread divider system.

Lots of Positive FeedbackThe quick setup times also attracted lots of interest during the demos of the Presto II. Muller Martini also showed live how double production enables increasing productivity significantly. “Overall, we have received good responses from customers and most of them felt that their visit to our open house was useful and very beneficial to their work,” concludes Finn Nielsen, Managing Director of Muller Martini China.

Almost 100 visitors from over 50 graphic arts companies from across China took the opportunity to see the new Ventura MC 160 book sewing machine and the Presto II saddle stitcher live in action at the open house held at the Muller Martini plant in Shenzhen.

Digital cold foiling solution to create security and appealing label applications

Unlike some other ink jet systems that print metallic ink to provide a foil-like effect, the digital cold foil solution introduced by Domino is based on real conventional metallic foil to provide a higher quality finish and enable the use of security and decorative holographic images within the foil.

Depending on the substrate, the digital cold foil solution can operate at speeds up to 75m/min (246ft/min) and can be SUPPLIED as a stand-alone unit or be retrofitted to an existing foiling station. It is offered in up to seven different foiling widths ranging from 108mm (4.25”) up to 782mm (30.81”).

Philip Easton, Director of Domino’s Digital Printing Solutions Division, comments: “We have been facing an increasing demand for a digital coil foil solution over the last seven years, so have now combined the latest higher resolution K600i print TECHNOLOGY with an advanced adhesive formulation and a web handling solution supplied by AB Graphic International.”

Since the launch of the K600i monochrome ink jet printer in 2010, Domino has INSTALLED over 200 modules in a range of different production lines, including label presses for hybrid printing, and finishing and sheet-to-sheet lines. The new K600i cold foiling solution is based on the same TECHNOLOGY, albeit printing a new digital adhesive.

Digital foiling represents a unique proposition for security applications designed to prevent parallel TRADE and anti-counterfeit activity. The combination of holographic foil with digitally created images provides additional product complexity and makes counterfeiting increasingly difficult to achieve.

The label and packaging market, which is seeing a trend for shorter run lengths and multiple SKUs, is another segment that can profit from digital foiling. Easton explains: “According to our customers, production run lengths are getting increasingly shorter. More importantly, brand owners are expecting lead times in some cases as short as 24 hours. The only way a label converter can efficiently respond to this DEMAND is by digitally printing the labels. And, if the produce then needs foiling, our digital solution can be cost effective but also an efficient

One of Europe's largest self ad-hesive label producers to address new markets

Xeikon announced that Telrol Group, one of Europe's largest producers of labels, is the fourth label printing operation worldwide to INVEST in the breakthrough Xeikon Cheetah technology.With production sites spread over nine countries in Europe, the Telrol - Schades Group produces close to a billion square meters per annum of self-adhesive labels and paper rolls. Speed is of the essenceRunning at 30m/min (98 ft/min), Xeikon Cheetah will enable Telrol to create a leaner multi-platform approach to print production, and deliver its customers a more tailored, cost effective and efficient production process. And it will ensure the company is able to quickly respond to any new market challenges.

Hadaoui clarifies: “Offering extreme productivity and quality, Xeikon Cheetah gives us a new way of seeing the market and its potential. We want to give customers broader access to the benefits of digital print by enabling more work to be transitioned from conventional production to digital. Xeikon Cheetah technology will allow to significantly raise the crossover point in addition to the other advantages it offers.”

He explains that the press can easily handle volumes of close to 38.000 meters per day – counting 21 hours of production during three shifts. This ability takes digital label printing to new limits: “In my business, there is still a lot of low hanging fruit that can be transferred easily and cost efficiently from existing technologies. Not only can we then add value through digital print, but we can also increase capacity on the existing traditional printing machines. We have production plants that are dedicated to Blanc, Multi–Color, High–end, Digital, Commodity label and POS (cashroll) production.

Each of these sites are highly structured and have their own KPI s to ensure each is as profitable and Lean as possible. Within the digital department, we can address a different set of demands and ensure that it is also as competitive as it can be. Of course, adding the fastest digital label

press in its class, we will be setting new break-even points for certain orders. This opens up the market to broader digital support and a faster analog-to-digital migration.”

Survival of the creativeBeing able to offer something extra is crucial to Hadaoui’s business ethos: “We are always looking to offer something new,” he says. “That is why we have worked closely with Xeikon throughout the years, and opted to become a pilot site for its Xeikon Cheetah technology – knowing it will meet our expectations. It had to be the best, most robust, and strongest solution in its class in order to support our aggressive 24/7 production schedules. When Xeikon sees any limitations, they proactively work to eliminate them. This ensures that they will continue to have the best digital presses on the market for our portfolio. This initial install is expected to serve as a blueprint that could be rolled out across the group,Hadaoui states, adding, “My strategy is to set up plants that offer the highest quality in one discipline, which is easy to combine and copy to other locations in Europe. It will help me European-ise digital in the group. I can take the best configurations, processes and practices, put them together and set up similar digital divisions in every site. Our investment in the latest and most advanced Xeikon technology is part of that strategy.”

And the timing is right with a buoyant market, Hadaoui concludes: “Our industry is set to grow and consolidate. We are still in a pull market. Our anticipated growth is driven by two things – the market is growing volume wise but also important is our ability

to add value and drive down costs compared to conventional production, especially with growing demand for shorter runs and versioning from our brand owner clients. I believe you not only have to grow in the field in which you are operating but also keep your eyes open for growth opportunities in related fields. Staying in the same field is a limitation, and I don’t want to be limited in anything – not in markets, technology or people. My partnership with Xeikon ensures that I push the boundaries.”

FESPA 2015: Global Expo attendance up 17%

The combined event attracted 23137 individual (unique) visitors, with the majority electing to stay at the show for more than one day, resulting in the highest ever revisit rate for any FESPA event. This reflects the increased scope of FESPA’s Global Expo in terms of exhibiting companies and educational content, which motivated visitors to extend their visit beyond one day to take in all the product innovations and educational opportunities .

The speciality print mega-event played host to more than 750 exhibitors under four distinct event brands: FESPA 2015 (screen, digital and textile printing); FESPA Fabric (garment printing and decoration); European Sign Expo (non PRINTED signage) and Printeriors (printed interior décor).

FESPA 2015 Global Expo also offered visitors an Educational Hub, Sign Hub, Wrap Cup Masters vehicle wrapping area, 3D and Industrial Print Showcases, a gallery of FESPA Awards entries, and the NEW Printeriors conference featuring speakers from the interior design and architectural communities.

An increased emphasis on textile applications - including soft signage, interior décor applications and garment printing - was notable throughout the halls of FESPA 2015 Global Expo. This was reinforced by the publication on Wednesday 20 May of the six directional trends emerging from FESPA’s global PRINT Census, one of which was the rise of textile applications as a means

of diversification for print service providers.

With heavy-duty roll handling up to 300 kg (660 lbs) and 10 litre ink SUPPLIES, the printer enables more unattended operation such as overnight printing. Additionally, dual-roll split spindles offer easier, safer handling of oversized rolls; in-line slitters reduce bottlenecks in finishing; and built-in LED lights support on-the-fly proofing.

The INVESTMENT in the haul of professional uPrint SE Plus 3D Printers, from Swiss Stratasys reseller, Alphacam, follows ETH's objective to completely modernize its Technical Drawing and CAD course by INSTALLING the very latest technologies available. According to Professor Dr. Kristina Shea, head of the Engineering Design and Computing Laboratory (EDAC) at ETH Zürich, Stratasys' uPrint SE Plus 3D Printer was selected specifically for its reliability and ability to produce higher-quality, functional parts in comparison to other similar options available on the market.

"The course has between 450-500 students, so reliability was essential and a big part of our decision to INVEST in a professional 3D printer," says Dr. Shea. "We had previously relied on CAD and modeling on a screen, but using high-quality, functional physical models ensures students are far more engaged."

All of the work undertaken on ETH Zürich's arsenal of 3D printers is achieved using ivory ABSplus® FDM material, a mechanically strong and stable thermoplastic which is ideal for functional prototyping.

The ability of the uPrint SE Plus 3D Printer to print layer thicknesses of 0.330mm and 0.254mm provides the needed precision for students requiring accurate parts.

is the customization and BUILDINGof a balloon-powered car model, which challenges students to design and 3D print various iterations of two parts for the car.

"Thanks to 3D PRINTING technology, we've given students the tools to design and prototype the wheel spokes and the top of the cars," states Dr Shea. "The first time we 3D printed parts, we did it in six days, running overnight. With nine parts to each car, it was a huge job, therefore you can see why the reliability of a professional 3D printer was integral to such a large investment. We now call them our ‘little workhorses!'"

Dr. Shea continues: "I was particularly INTERESTED IN the effect of using 3D printed models on students' motivation. With 3D printing, we saw increased motivation in learning to use the CAD software. The appreciation of scale and the importance of production tolerances grew when the customized parts the students had designed were 3D printed and assembled. Even though design manufacturing guidelines were provided, there were marked increases in understanding as a result of the material realization of their designs."

As Sig Behrens, General Manager, Global Education at Stratasys, explains; "We believe in empowering engineering students with 3D printing skills of the modern workplace and this is a strategy that many leading institutions, like ETH Zürich, are committing to and INVESTING in.

The Optron “no-fly zone” – a new solution to the insect repellent

Optron, the latest addition to Lintec’s Wincos range of window films, is an inventive new approach to repelling insects in environments where hygiene is paramount.

Fujifilm unveils new UV ink technology with launch of Uvijet OW at FESPA 2015

Fujifilm today announces the launch of an advanced new UV ink TECHNOLOGY at FESPA 2015, called Uvijet OW. The newly launched ink range, which is used in the Inca Onset series, has been developed specifically with improved adhesion properties so that it can be used on a wider range of rigid and flexible plastic substrates, while retaining the high jetting standard and printing reliability associated with all Uvijet inks.

All Uvijet OW inks, currently available as CMYK, Lc, Lm and orange, deliver a high gloss finish and cure effectively at the fastest Onset print modes to ensure maximum productivity and excellent print appearance. The inks also provide superior resistance to post print PROCESSESsuch as cutting, creasing and routing.
