Welcome to the 2013-14 wrap-up edition of the Princeton Varsity Club News. It has been an incredibly exciting year for Princeton Athletics, and we could not be more proud of our more than 1,000 varsity Tiger student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom, in the community and on the fields of play. This publication is devoted to recognizing and remembering the myriad accomplishments of the Great Class of 2014, and celebrating the 2013-14 academic year.

We begin by sharing excerpts from the PVC Awards Banquet senior keynote speakers, Gabby Guzman ’14 (soccer) and Chris Clement ’14 (basketball). The Class of 2014 was comprised of many extremely high performing student-athletes who contributed mightily to their respective teams, the surrounding community and in their area of study. Their spectacular efforts are highlighted through the recipients of this year’s top departmental awards; the William Winston Roper Trophy, c. Otto von Kienbusch Award, Art Lane ’34 Award and the Class of 1916 Cup. We also highlight the 2014 recipients of the Class of 1967 PVC Citizen-Athlete Award - Richard Stengel ’77 and Roger Gordon ’73, and the 2014 recipient of the Marvin Bressler Award, Neil Pomphrey.

Later in the issue, we will reflect on 2013-14 with a pictorial tribute that highlights many of the memorable PVC events held throughout the academic year. While the PVC hosted or co-hosted over 30 student-athlete, alumni and community events this year, perhaps the most memorable would be the tribute to Gary Walters ’67, in recognition of his twenty years of dedicated service and leadership. We are also proud to announce that the PVC Awards Banquet has been named in Gary’s honor and will forever be known as the “Gary Walters ’67 PVC Awards Banquet.” We thank you Gary for your unrelenting passion for Princeton and for having the vision to create the Princeton Varsity Club.

We also are excited to welcome back to campus, Mollie Marcoux ’91, who has just begun her duties as the Ford Family Director of Athletics. A standout two-sport student-athlete at Princeton (soccer and ice hockey), Mollie’s competitive fire, drive and pride in being a Princeton Tiger is clear. We look forward to helping her continue to provide an exceptional collegiate athletic experience that is centered on “Education Through Athletics.”

We close the issue by thanking and recognizing the generous supporters of the Princeton Varsity Club. Your collective commitment to the Performance, Values and Community of Princeton Athletics has made everything in this newsletter a reality. We also recognize the continued dedication of the PVC Awards Banquet table sponsors and PVC Letter Sweater sponsors whose generosity allows the PVC to properly recognize the entire graduating class of senior student-athletes. On behalf of all of our varsity student-athletes, head coaches, administrators, and the entire Princeton Athletics community, we thank and salute all of our supporters.

We hope you enjoy this special issue of the PVC News and look forward to seeing you in 2014-15! Go, TIGERS!!!

Senior Keynote Speaker ExcerptsGabby Guzman ’14Women’s Soccer

Chris Clement ’14Men’s Basketball Good evening. It is a privilege and honor to be able to share a few words with you all tonight…If you are like me, then there are several people, some even who are present tonight, that are a primary reasons for our successes that we are cur-rently celebrating. Thank you to all coaches, teammates, friends, families and faculty members that have gone out of their way to help us achieve our dreams. Tonight, I want to speak about a few words that a particular individual in this room has repeatedly told me. These words epitomize “Education through Athletics.”

Growing up, my father always had a few special phrases that he liked to share with my brother and me. If we were wrestling then we could guarantee that that he was going to threaten us with his infamous “knuckle sandwich.” If we wanted to go hang out with our friends it was a sure thing that he would say, “ask your mother.” And whenever we complained about how many chores we had to do around the house, he would always respond with, “Back in my day…” I’m sure many of you are familiar with these quotes. However, this next phrase has continually proven to be true within my own life. Whenever we would have a serious talk he would tell my brother and me, “your crowd determines your course.”

This may seem simple but is often overlooked. If you show me the five people that you spend most of your time with, then I have a very accurate idea of who you are as a person. To me, the most incredible aspect about playing college sports at Princeton is that your teammates challenge your standards of what you think is acceptable…

Many of the athletes in this room have been highly touted and recruited from a very young age. To say that school and sports have been easy until this point would be an understatement. And for some, very little has changed after arriving on Princeton’s campus four years ago. You’ve won all-Ivy athletic honors and graduated with 3.8 GPA’s. And for that, I want to commend you.

However, tonight I want to talk about those who have, at times, strug-gled to make our mark on Princeton. I am talking about the student-athlete that has missed the game-winning basket, dropped the last second pass, and struck out with the bases loaded. This is a story that is infrequently told, but also needs to be celebrated.

“Education through Athletics” means that not only will we fail, but you will sometimes fail on grand stages such as on national television or at a sold-out stadium. Our own flaws in our jump shot or throwing motion are exposed to the entire world. It is a tough day when even your own mother questions what you were thinking on a certain play.

But at the end of the day, life goes on. Next time you have the chance to take the game winning shot, you take it with confidence. You watch the game winning pass poetically fall into your hands. And you can hear the sound of the ball cracking against your bat as you send it into the distant outfield.

When first considered what I would talk about in this speech, I instantly realized that there is no way to fully sum up the experience of being a Princeton student-athlete; it’s kind of impossible. More than four years ago, when we were making what seemed to be the biggest decision of our lives, this place presented itself as a no-brainer for most of us. Standing here right now, at this moment, we can say with full confidence that our decision to go to Princeton was the best decision in our lives. I am hopeful that my words today can express just how incredible our experience has been, although we can all probably agree that our time here was indescribable.

Princeton student-athletes are so many thing to so many people; they are accomplished, qualified, united and truly some of the most talented people on this planet. At this banquet tonight, we are surrounded by national champions (field hockey and fencing), Olympians (and even people who are in contention to be in the Olympics) and many Ivy league champions.

Although being at Princeton has been an extremely rewarding and special experience, let me speak for everyone when I say that it was never easy. I’ll never forget the first game of our season this past year when the entire football team came and cheered us on…the atmosphere they brought to our stadium was electrifying and exciting. In that moment, I realized I was part of a family. This extends from the field to the training room to the classroom. I know most people who have suffered significant injuries during their time here will tell you that the training room bonds they made with people from different teams were just as crucial to their recovery as the support from their teammates, coaches and trainers.

We have stuck together as student-athletes and I give us a lot of credit for that. But it’s important to recognize the many other people in this audience who have encouraged us throughout all four years. First, I would like to thank all the coaches here who have dedicated their life, personal time and sanity to the Ivy League dream that they have a 1/7 chance of attaining each season. But success for these coaches goes far beyond records or titles; the endless trust and encouragement they place in us for four years is essential to our individual growth as people. It’s also the strength we receive from home, whether that’s Bridgewater, NJ, California, Vancouver, Canada, or New Zealand, that has helped us reach our potential at Princeton.

In the moment, sports seem to be all about wins and losses. As student-athletes most of whom are now facing our athletic mortality, we now can understand that it has always been so much more than that. Athletics have been the source of some of the greatest memories in our lives, they have brought us to Princeton and have fundamentally shaped who we are as people.

The drive, work ethic, team mentality, and strength we have acquired as Princeton student-athletes will undoubtedly transition into anything we pursue in our futures. Education Through Athletics is more than a logo: at Princeton it is a transformative experience!

2013-14 PVC YEAR IN REVIEW

Page 9: PVC News - 2013-14 Highlights

On September 4, 2013, Gary Walters ’67 announced that he would be stepping down as the Ford Family Director of Athletics at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year. Walters has left a legacy of unprecedented ath-letic success at Princeton. During his tenure, Princeton teams have won more than 200 Ivy League champion-ships and 47 individual or team national championships.

Walters is a 1967 graduate of Princeton, and he was a point guard on the basketball team during one of the most glorious runs in program history, including the 1965 NCAA Final Four and 1967 East Regional. As a basketball player he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. He was also an assistant coach with the men’s basketball team when it won the 1975 NIT championship.

In a letter addressed to Princeton Athletic community, Walters stated, “while much may be made of our suc-cessful competitive record during my tenure, I am most appreciative of the student-athletes, faculty, coaches, alumni and staff who understood that the concept of Education Through Athletics is a derivative of the role that athletics should play in the cognitive, social and emotional development of our student-athletes. ”

Mollie Marcoux ’91 was announced as the new Ford Family Director of Athletics on April 15, 2014.

A standout ice hockey and soccer player at Princeton, Marcoux also excelled in the classroom, graduating cum laude with a degree in history. Her senior thesis focused on the history of women in sports from 1895 to 1946.

As part of her opening remarks to the Princeton athletics community, Marcoux stated, “I will do everything I can to uphold the traditions and the excellence that (have been) created and to make all the members of the Princeton family be proud of an athletic program that I truly believe is the best in the world.”

Welcome home Mollie!
