THE WEDDING OF THE YEAR – AT PUTTY By Margaret Ferguson 2018 saw the Royal weddings in Windsor (UK) where Prince Harry married Meghan Markle and Princess Eugenie wed Jack Brooksbank. Not to be outdone by either of these events, not far from our own Windsor, in Putty on Friday 26 th October, the marriage of Birte Junck to Davyd Castro was celebrated. Birte was transported to the Putty Hall by Lachie, the horse with carriage, proudly driven by June Malmberg, assisted by grooms Julie and Sandy and greeted by her Viking guard of honour on arrival at the hall (picture top). Birte’s parents, Klaus and Amrci and brother Arni travelled from Hamburg, as did one of her bridesmaids Samira and husband Ozzy. Her Uncle Klaus and Aunt Helga sailed by ship from California to attend the wedding. Davyd chose his brother Louis and his friend George as groomsmen. Davyd’s sister Alicia and his son, Edward and family all came to Putty for the event. The marriage service, exchange of vows and wedding rings took place on the Putty Hall stage before a large assembly of family and friends all very happy to share this special occasion with the bridal couple. Putty Hall had been transformed into a cathedral, complete with wispy white drapes, flowered seating and a beautiful decorated stage, fit for the occasion. It was quite a multicultural affair including guests originating from Germany, Argentina and South Africa. Needless to say the wedding breakfast was a mixture of German and Argentinian food with a lamb roasted over an open fire, salads, German breads and cake on the menu. As for the Vikings, they were another story!

VALE José Mendoza By Jane Robinson It is with great sadness that again our small community has been touched by tragedy. On Friday 2 November Putty resident, José Medoza was killed in an accident on his beautiful property. José was a vibrant character, wonderful cook and host and beloved husband, Father, Grandfather and friend. Our

thoughts and prayers are with Pilar, their daughters and husbands, Grandson and extended family at this time of great sadness and loss. José and Pilar had been generous in their donations to Putty Community events and Jose was always ready with an “interesting” solution to the things that concerned our community. A passionate Australian of Spanish birth and heritage, a successful business man and committed family man and friend, José will certainly be mourned and missed. On Sunday 4 November a prayer service was held at Pilgrims Rest for José, Pilar and their loved ones - an expression of thanks giving for José’s life, support for Pilar and her loved ones and healing for those first responders who assisted at the scene of José’s accident including Jason Stokes and Peter and Judy Smits. At this time we are unaware of the Funeral details however when they are know they will be posted on the Putty Facebook Page. José Mendoza (1946 – 2018) Rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon you.

ALL SAINTS ANGLICAN CHURCH AT HOWES VALLEY CLOSES Story and photograph, courtesy of Pam King Howes Valley was originally part of the Parish of Jerry's Plains. The services commenced in 1926 and in the early days, the Rector would travel to Howes Valley by horse and buggy and stay at the home of Dorothea and Benjamin Harris, who conducted the Post Office. They are the great-grandparents of John Green and Diane Cafe.

Services were held in the Harris home, with people gathering from the surrounding district. This continued for many years until services were transferred to the old Howes Valley hall.

For most of the last 40 years, the services have again been held in a family home. Iris (granddaughter of Dorothea and Benjamin Harris) and Arthur Green's home, and then John and Ann Green's home, has been the place of worship each month where locals (including Putty) gathered together. Our song leader for many years was Aleda Graham.

John and Ann and their family, Anthony, Jodie, Emma-Leigh, Josephine and Jacob, recently moved away from Howes Valley. On Sunday, 21st October, during a Service of Thanksgiving, the Anglican Parish of Singleton farewelled and thanked the family for their hospitality and generosity provided over five generations of the family.

Putty People Newsletter November 2018, Page 3 of 6FIREY NEWS By Margaret Ferguson Crews from the Putty Fire Brigade have been busy along the Box Gap Road area where a fire was lit two weeks ago. Covering an area of about 20 hectares, it is in hilly, rough country and is now considered as under control.

Although Putty has had rain during October, high to extreme fire danger ratings are still being predicted and the NSW RFS Commissioner may declare a Total Fire Ban (TOBAN) on any day to reduce the risk of fires damaging or destroying life, property and the environment. In a Total Fire Ban no fire may be lit in the open and all fire permits are suspended. This includes incinerators and barbecues which burn solid fuel, e.g. wood, charcoal or heat beads. No general purpose welding, grinding, soldering or gas cutting can be done in the open.

Landcare Notes – How Much Can A Koala Bear? By Ian David

Flora Reserve Every airport gift shop in Australia is stacked to the roof with stuffed toy koalas. Japanese travellers don’t go home with teddy bears, they prefer the marsupial that looks cute, moves slow and smells like a funky gum leaf. Nothing’s as funky as a koala. Very few things can survive on a diet of toxic eucalyptus leaves. Koalas love ‘em. The downside is that they sleep between 18 and 22 hours a day and aren’t exactly frisky. Koalas numbers are declining. It’s estimated that we have 36,000 left in New South Wales, down 26% in just the last 20 years. Scientists are now predicting they’ll be extinct in 30 years if we keep taking their habitats. Imagine going to a gift shop to see a koala.

There is some good news. National Parks recently got in touch to say that a large chunk of the Putty State Forest will become a Flora Reserve in January as a sanctuary for the resident koala population. That’s on our doorstep, folks. The NSW government, in committing $45m to allocate almost 25,000 hectares of native and state forest as new koala reserves, will also establish a research program and a koala hospital at Port Stephens.

Starting next year, Putty Landcare will be planning walking tours through the Flora Reserve with the help of National Parks. Situated, as we are, cheek by jowl to one of the world’s great sanctuaries, the World Heritage listed Wollemi National Park, and now the koala habitat of the Putty Forest Flora Reserve, why

shouldn’t we get to know it better?

Time To Think This week I started to feel the first rush of alarm. Time to make a cup of tea, sit on the verandah and take in the view. The International Panel on Climate Change issued a report several weeks ago that says we’ve got a decade or two to do something fair dinkum about the changing climate. A few days ago the World Wildlife Fund released a study that tells us that more than half the planet’s vertebrates have disappeared since 1970. It seems we’d better get used to hearing that kind of news. The world’s last white rhino died in March this year. Gorillas, spotted-tail quolls and tigers are all heading for the wall. We’ve got just 12 orange-bellied parrots still breathing.

The decision to issue a Total Fire Ban is usually made in the afternoon for the following day and usually starts at midnight and lasts for 24 hours. A Total Fire Ban may be issued on the actual day if weather conditions get worse.

Don’t risk a fine. Always check if a Total Fire Ban is in place before you light up any fire in the open. Go the following link and check section 3 (in blue) for the Greater Hunter Area. A Permit to Burn is required for any fire larger than a cooking fire. Due to the current weather conditions, Permits to Burn have been suspended.

Contact NSWRFS Hunter Valley on 6575 1200 for further information. http://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/fdr-and-tobans Information courtesy NSWRFS website.

Landcare Notes – How Much Can A Koala Bear? Continued. In my lifetime, the world’s population has tripled from 2.6 billion to 7.7 billion. So many people to feed, clothe and supply with smartphones. If the world was a house you’d fear the fridge is empty and the toilet’s blocked. In the last decade 2 billion people have suffered directly from an extreme weather event. One of our own members, lucky enough to live by Sydney Harbour, is raising the height of her seawall due to rising tides driven by global warming. There is no doubt all of us, young and old, have a challenge coming up fast to meet us.

We also live in an extraordinary part of the world. Anyone who chooses to live in Putty Valley has made a choice that says much about their fine taste and gracious nature. We don’t have to go insane living by a thundering highway. We’ve built our homes within walking distance of the gateway to one of the great wonders of the world. The air is clean and the colours and sounds of nature are a delight to the eye and ear.

For those who arrive to casually toss a can (or mattress) out of the car, they are trying to make Putty look like many other parts of the world. No one could possibly be happy about that, except those who don’t live here. As I sit on the verandah, thinking about the world, I can only feel more positive about preserving this place, our place, for us. And the world.

NOT A KOALA

Duck Now Driving through the Hunter Valley a month ago you’d have encountered the sight of many kangaroos dead along the side of the road. The drought, forcing them to feed on the verges, cost them dearly and didn’t do a few bumper bars much good either. If you’re unfortunate enough to hit and injure wildlife there’s a WIRES site located on Putty Road about 3kms north of the Colo Heights servo. Our local vet says many years ago, before WIRES existed, he got a call from a friend in Putty who’d hit a kangaroo. Since the vet was holidaying down the coast, he suggested that the friend take the poor animal to Taronga Zoo.

When the vet got back after his holiday, he asked his friend about the kangaroo’s trip to zoo. Well, said the friend, I did as you suggested and took him to Taronga and he liked it so much, the next day I decided to take him to the pictures.
