Formed back in 1894 and now regarded by many to be the friendliest private members’ golf club in the county, Puttenham offers a challenging 18-hole tree-lined course with Professional’s shop, practice facilities and driving range, as well as a fully licensed bar, restaurant and pretty patio area offering delicious home-cooked food to be enjoyed by members and visitors alike. Puttenham has thriving men’s, seniors’, ladies’, mixed and junior sections, all of whom enjoy a wide range of competitions and matches. In addition, the Club organises many fun social activities for golfers and non-golfers throughout the year including bridge, quiz and bingo evenings and a family summer barbeque. Puttenham also welcomes green fee and society visitors, many of whom return on a regular basis as they have enjoyed both the course and friendly atmosphere in the Clubhouse so much.

The Course
“Puttenham is a beautiful, mature course whose endearing quirks
only serve to make it more memorable. The result is a course that,
at its best, is glorious.” Eurosport
Nestling in the picturesque foothills of the Hogs Back, the gently undulating 18-hole course at Puttenham is a mixture of heath and woodland, and the tree-lined fairways provide a particularly splendid backcloth of colour for the attractive sections of heather and many types of wild flowers. In spring the course is surrounded by bluebells and in early summer the azaleas and rhododendrons on the 12th and 13th in particular are a spectacle not to be missed. With its sandy soil, the course is usually dry underfoot and drains quickly in wet weather providing excellent playing conditions all year round. However, in the event
of a hot dry summer, Puttenham also has on-course watering using the supply from its own borehole. For those wanting to warm up before their round, or just get in some extra practice, there is a driving range, practice area (including a 3-hole Academy course) and putting green situated next to the 1st tee.
Having been originally formed in 1894, Puttenham is a mature and challenging course, not too long but the tight fairways and well-guarded greens mean you have to think your way around a layout where no two holes are the same.

Also I was trying to neaten up the bot-tom block with the appt times, lining the right hand side up as well as the left, see att, we could increase the space between “dental appts” & “hyg appts” and their respective hours to use the space a little better and keep it lined up neatly. Straight hitting and good course management are essential if you want to score well at Puttenham but the beautiful surroundings make it easier to bear if you stray off the straight and narrow. A welcome sausage or bacon sandwich from the Halfway Hut, nestling in the woods between the 9th green and 10th tee, may also help keep up your strength as you tackle the back nine.
The Club’s greenkeepers have a well-earned reputation for keeping the course in tip top condition, something often commented on by visitors to Puttenham, and with Golf Monthly magazine describing the 10th hole as “as good a hole as you’ll find anywhere”, you will be pleasantly surprised to discover the delights of Puttenham Golf Club.

Full membership at Puttenham Golf Club works out at around £22 per week or £18 for 5-day membership, fantastic value when you compare it to the cost of visitor green fees.
As a full or 5-day member, you can introduce guests at member’s guest rates, hold a CONGU recognised handicap, play in the many competitions and matches, and take advantage of our reciprocal arrangements with other Clubs within an hour’s drive for free or discounted weekday golf. In addition, you will receive regular newsletters, a member discount on food and drink, be able to attend the popular social events (where friends and family are also welcome) and have full
access to the course, practice and Clubhouse facilities. Finally, of course, you will have the opportunity to meet many likeminded people in an informal and sociable atmosphere.
If you don’t feel you can justify the time or cost of full golf club membership but would still like to enjoy the benefits of being a Club member, why not try Puttenham’s popular Limited Playing Rights (LPR) scheme where you pay a low, up front fee, and then a special rate green fee each time you play. LPR membership has two levels, Gold and Silver, depending on whether you want to play on weekend mornings, and offers full access to the course, practice and Clubhouse facilities

as well as the opportunity to hold a CONGU recognised handicap, play in Club competitions and introduce guests at member’s guest rates.
Puttenham doesn’t operate tee times, instead the members play their golf on a roll up basis on most days of the week so you can always get a game and, as the Club is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, new members quickly feel at home.
Puttenham organises regular competitions, knockouts and matches throughout the year for the men’s, ladies’, mixed, senior and junior sections so all ages and golfing abilities are catered for. The men have competitions on most Saturdays and Sundays as well as a number of mid-week events every month, whilst the ladies’
main competition day is Tuesday with Sunday as their alternative day. The lady members say that whilst they are competitive, they have a very friendly and relaxed attitude to their golf and on Tuesday lunch times the Clubhouse is always filled with ladies – some who have played in the competition and others who have just popped up for a bite to eat and a bit of a chat.
Mixed golf is also popular at Puttenham with a number of mixed greensomes and bowmaker events, as well as knockout competitions and matches against other local clubs.

For anyone working locally who just wants to hit a few golf balls and have a quick bite to eat during their lunch break, Puttenham’s social membership offers unlimited access to the 3-hole Academy course, practice range and Clubhouse facilities for under £2 per week.
All of Puttenham’s membership categories are good value for money with special prices for juniors
(particularly those joining with an adult relative) and reduced fees for those up to the age of 29.
As a member’s Club, Puttenham is run by the members for the members and, unlike proprietary clubs, any surplus income is reinvested in the Club to maintain and improve the facilities.

Green fee visitors are welcome at Puttenham on weekdays and some weekend afternoons but tee times must be booked in advance. From time to time, we offer special rate tee times for up to four people and these are shown on our website and emailed to everyone who has registered their email address with us. The Club also holds a number of popular Open and Invitation Events during the year, as well as ladies’,
men’s and mixed Coffee Mornings, which are always enjoyed by all those who take part.
Puttenham is a popular Society venue and many of our Societies return year after year. Societies are welcome to play on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays as well as some Tuesday afternoons. Our prices are competitive with discounts for groups of 20 or more.

On 8th October 1894, General Sir Frederick Marshall KCMG wrote to Mark Smallpiece, Lord of Puttenham Manor, asking if he would allow a group of Army Officers, Charterhouse School Masters and local businessmen to form a golf club on his land at Puttenham Common. The fact that General Marshall was a special favourite of Queen Victoria at the time probably helped sway his judgement and, thus, Puttenham Golf Club was born, with the General quickly established as President.
As it happens, Queen Victoria herself had already visited the site that was to become Puttenham Golf Club when she stood on Frowsbury Hill (now the 2nd Tee) on a warm summer’s day in July 1858 to take
the salute of 20,000 members of the British Army during a Royal Field Day.
On 8th July 2008, the Club commemorated this event in style when Queen Victoria’s great, great, great grandson, His Royal Highness Prince Edward the Earl of Wessex, attended a day of celebration and unveiled a plaque on the very spot where his ancestor had stood 150 years earlier. Puttenham Golf Club can therefore make some small claim to Royal connections!

Club History continued
nine holes which measured just 2,413 yards with a “bogey” of 39. The oak tree on the fairway at the 1st hole, which has since become the Club’s emblem, was already a mature tree in 1894 and still looms menacingly as it waits for that errant tee shot, just as it did over 100 years ago! In 1935, the Club was given permission to extend the course by a further nine holes and by October 1937 Puttenham Golf Club could boast 18 separate holes.
Having bought the freehold to the Club from the Smallpieces in 1981, the opportunity arose the following year to buy a further 44 acres of land
adjacent to the course, known as Monk Grove Copse. Purchasing the extra land meant a potential re-design of the course, with five new holes earmarked for the copse area, and Donald Steel appointed architect. Puttenham’s new course layout was officially opened in June 1990 with a yardage of 6,070 from the white tees and 5,556 yards from the yellow tees.
Updates and improvements continue apace and the course now measures 6,220 yards with a par of 71 from the white tees, 5,784 yards with a par of 70 from the yellow tees and 5,400 yards with a par of 71 from the red (ladies) tees.

Puttenham Golf Club is easily accessible by car, being just 35 miles from Central London, only 10 minutes from the centres of Guildford, Farnham and Godalming and 15 minutes from Woking, Camberley or Farnborough.
The entrance to the Club is opposite the Harvester Inn on the B3000 within the triangle formed by the A3 and A31 south from Guildford (signposted Godalming/Puttenham).
