April 2018 Putt-n-Pub breaks record The celebrity putters were a highlight for many of the 360 players at the sixth annual Putt-N-Pub on March 10 according to comments received after the event. The celebrity putters, people supported by Black Hills Works, were on hand at each hole of the two miniature golf courses located throughout downtown Rapid City. Some of the comments about them included, “They made my day,” “So awesome for them and us,” and “Having Josh Gilbert at Thirsty’s signing autographs and getting to see his excitement for the entire day. Best experience ever.” Josh was one of the putters and along with his other duties, he was raising money for his trip to the national softball tournament at the Special Olympic USA Games in Seattle. More than $2,500 was raised for Gilbert and four of his team members to make the trip. A record 90 teams participated in the Putt- n-Pub, up from 63 in 2017. The profits also doubled with almost $17,000 being raised to support recre- ational programs at Black Hills Works. Fifty-one businesses and 142 volunteers participated this year. NASCAR fan gets big surprise

Jeff McGlade thanks Sharon Hansen for the NASCAR jacket.

Jeff McGlade, who works at the Suzie Cappa Art Cen-ter, recently received a wonderful gift from a local woman. Sharon Hansen had seen Jeff’s artwork in a bank and read the accompanying biographical infor-mation which mentions that Jeff is a NASCAR fan. Sharon is also a fan, as was her husband, who died in 2016. Sharon wanted to give the jacket to a fellow fan who would enjoy it as much as her husband had so she contacted Diane Flahaven-Neu who passed the infor-mation on to the Suzie Cappa Art Center and a meeting was arranged.

Greg Solano (center) joined Dorothy Rosby in pre-senting about Black Hills Works to the South Dakota Student Council Association (SDSCA) convention on March 26. More than 1100 students from around the state attended. SDSCA President Jacob West had seen Greg and the video about him at the 2017 Gala and thought his story would make a good one for the con-vention, the theme for which was Hometown Heroes. Greg and Dorothy did six presentations and at each Greg was able to pass around a notebook to collect autographs, one of his hobbies.

New Credit Card Purchasing Reimbursement Program! Our agency is transitioning to Wells Fargo credit card system which is a web- based, on-line credit card charge and reimbursement system. Credit cards that we use now (Walmart, Visa, Mastercard, Bank of America, “gas cards” etc.) will be replaced by this new system. Also, reimbursements to staff for mileage, recreation, etc. will be part of this system. We will start out with a few test areas/individu-als in April to “iron out any kinks” before transition-ing the entire agency onto this program. The business office will be contacting areas/individuals a few at a time to get you started. The business office looks forward to this change as it will gain efficiencies for credit card use and processing as well as expense reimbursement for mileage and recreational expenses.Thank you!BHW Business Office

Online and Outside: Helping someone regain health and wellnessAt the DSP Gallery Walk on March 19, Jennifer Peter-son told the story about how she assisted a woman she supports, “Marie” to regain control of her diabetes. Jennifer has a good relationship with Marie, and that made a big difference in the story. Jennifer said she is also very familiar with diabetes because many of her family members have it. Marie’s varied work hours had been an ob-stacle to her taking classes that are offered locally for people with diabetes, so Jennifer sought classes online that would be appropriate for Marie. After clearing one with Marie’s nurse, she assisted her to sign up. Marie had always loved looking at Jennifer’s Pinterest account, so she helped Marie set up her own account and learn to use it. Now Marie has access to healthy recipes she wants to try. Finally, Jennifer set out to help Marie become more active. Jennifer is an avid hiker and Marie began to accompany her on hikes. Eventually, Jennifer assist-ed Marie to shop and learn to use a Fitbit. In Decem-ber, the two held a friendly step challenge. The results of Marie’s increased exercise and other changes was that she walked 139,233 steps in December and lost two pounds.

TADA! Dreams coming true for Derek“Tada,” says Derek Rostvet as he lifts his welder’s helmet and shows off his work. More and more, Derek is living his dream to be a welder, but it’s been a long journey. Teri Alford traced that journey during the DSP Gallery Walk on March 18. Derek came to Black Hills Works in 2011 and did laundry, janitorial work and lawn care. But he had become increasingly unhappy about going to work. Then one day as he was showing her pictures of things that interested him on computer, she discovered his passion. Among other things, Derek showed her a photo of welding helmets. When she asked about those, he lit up. He even had a couple of helmets in his closet. Later, Teri would learn from Derek’s mom, Catherine Holt, that he had used his welding skills to create chairs and stools while living on his family’s farm. He had also participated in metal shop in school. Teri decided to find a way for Derek to use his love of welding. Once a week for more than a year, Teri accompanied Derek as they visited stores with welding supplies. Derek became a “regular” over time, building relationships with the owners and employees. Derek’s desire for welding gear became an incentive for him to go to work. Eventually, Derek was able to purchase a new helmet and Teri began searching for a way Derek could use his welding skills. A year passed with no opportunities. But even-tually, Jay from Jay’s Welding agreed to meet with Derek. Teri began accompanying Derek to Jay’s for 15 minutes each week. Teri says after each weld he made, he would stop, turn to her, lift his helmet and exclaim proudly, “tada.” Then he’d put his helmet back down and continue to weld.”

After a year, Jay increased the time he spends with Derek and is teaching him new skills. Now they spend as much as 45 minutes every other week. Derek is doing what he loves and continuing to work towards his goal of a job as a welder. Congratulations Derek and kudos to Teri for her persistence.

Five years and counting!Congratulations Gary Moulton who was recently honored for five years successful employment at Fam-ily Fare, formerly Family Thrift, on St. Patrick Street. Gary cleans the bakery and the meat room three days per week. He says he has had a variety of cleaning jobs in his career. “I enjoy cleaning, no matter what it is.” And he feels good about his work. “I’ve had numerous compliments from the big shots.” In his free time, Gary enjoys caring for his spot at the community garden. Avoid Surprises with Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue ShieldUnderstand your coverage before receiving care. Here are three tips to help you avoid surprises:

1. See a trusted, in-network doctor. Your personal doctor or primary care physician (PCP) should be someone who’s in-network. If you don’t have a personal doctor, log in and use the myWell-mark® Care Finder to search for one who’s in-net-work. Finding a doctor who is in-network will ensure you are paying the lowest out-of-pocket costs.

2. Know your plan and what’s covered. After you find an in-network doctor or care facility, it’s important to ask your provider questions about your treatment plan to make sure you understand the services you’ll re-ceive and what’s covered. 3. Reach out to WellmarkWe’re here to help you understand how your ben-efits work. Before starting any new treatment plan or program, you can log in to myWellmark® to find out if it’s covered under their health plan. You can also call BeWell 24/7SM at 844-84-BEWELL any time to get an explanation of treatment and to be connected to someone who can explain how benefits work. Plus, Wellmark Customer Service is also just a phone call away. 1-800-774-0384.
