Pastoral Letter for September 2019 Dear Friends, Do you remember your first day at school? My mum tells that, having delivered me
safely to school, she tried to say ‘goodbye’, but I had my head in a toy cupboard and didn’t want to know! I don’t remember that, but I do remember that the school
building seemed enormous and confusing and I lost my way coming out of the girls’ toilets. A teacher towered over me like a giant and I had to pluck up all my courage to speak to her. ‘I’m five and I’m lost!’ The giant was friendly and showed
me the way. September marks the beginning of a new year for many children, students and
staff in education. Those who are starting school, changing schools going to university, or starting jobs often do so with a strange combination of excitement
and fear. Please pray for them to meet friendly giants who show them the way. September is also the start of the Methodist Connexional year and the time of year when ministers and their families move to new and sometimes scary places and
many churches welcome new and sometimes scary ministers! Please pray that they too may meet friendly giants.
The metaphor ‘Standing on the shoulders of giants’ conjures images of building on the learning and experience of others, following their lead and example. It’s been
attributed to a number of people and used by many. Bernard of Chartres compared us to dwarfs perched on the shoulders of giants, saying that we see more and farther than our predecessors, not because we have keener vision or
greater height, but because we are lifted up and borne aloft on their gigantic stature.
A stained-glass window in Chartres Cathedral show the four major prophets of the Hebrew Bible, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel as gigantic figures, and
the four New Testament evangelists, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as ordinary-size people sitting on their shoulders. The evangelists, though smaller, "see
more" than the huge prophets for they saw the Messiah about whom the
prophets spoke.
Whether we are feeling small or enormous, excited or scared, when we meet Jesus, he assures us that he is
‘The way, the truth and the life’.
Every blessing,

Prayer
YOU’RE THE WORD OF GOD THE FATHER,
From before the world began; Every star and every planet Has been fashioned by Your hand.
All creation holds together By the power of Your voice: Let the skies declare Your glory, Let the land and seas rejoice!
You’re the Author of creation, You’re the Lord of every man;
And Your cry of love rings out Across the lands.
Yet You left the gaze of angels, Came to seek and save the lost, And exchanged the joy of heaven
For the anguish of a cross. With a prayer You fed the hungry, With a word You stilled the sea;
Yet how silently You suffered That the guilty may go free.
With a shout You rose victorious, Wresting victory from the grave, And ascended into heaven Leading captives in Your wake. Now You stand before the Father
Interceding for Your own. From each tribe and tongue and nation You are leading sinners home.

Bible Reading Luke 15:1-7
The Parable of the Lost Sheep
Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. 2 And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and
saying, ‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’ 3 So he told them this parable: 4 ‘Which one of you, having a
hundred sheep and losing one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness and go after the one that is lost until he finds it? 5 When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders and rejoices. 6 And when he comes home, he calls together his friends
and neighbours, saying to them, “Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.” 7 Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy
in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who need no repentance.
This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
Sermon part1
Luke 15:8-10
The Parable of the Lost Coin 8 ‘Or what woman having ten silver coins,[a] if she loses one of
them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 When she has found it, she calls together her
4
friends and neighbours, saying, “Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.” 10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the
presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.’ This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Communion
We share the peace.
God has made each one of us,
And He longs for us to be at peace with each other.
May God’s peace be with you all.
And also with you.
A prayer of thanksgiving
After “Lord, You give us so much” the response is And we are thankful.
Let us now remember what happened at the Last Supper that Jesus shared with His friends. On the night when He was
betrayed, The Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then He broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for You. Do this to remember me.”
In the same way, He took the cup of wine after supper, Saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and His people — An agreement confirmed with My blood.
Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.”
For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until He comes again.
Lord we thank You for this reminder of the generous love of Jesus. As we share the bread and wine, pour out Your Holy Spirit upon Your gifts, and upon us, that along with all Your
people on earth and in heaven, We may really belong to You. Join us to each other and to Yourself through the love of Jesus. In His name we pray. Amen.

We break the bread
As we break this bread, we remember God’s good gifts, Offered to each one of us. Thank you Lord that we can share the bread and the wine.
We share the bread and wine
This is the Lord’s table.
It is Jesus himself who invites us to share together here.
After communion, we say thank you Lord we thank You that we have been able to share bread and wine around Your table. Help us as we go away from here to be ready to share all the good things that You give,
and especially the good news of the love of Jesus. Amen.
StF 239 Sent by the Lord am I
Final Blessing
May God our creator make us more and more Into the people that He wants us to be;
May Jesus our Saviour fill us with His generous love: And may the Holy Spirit guide us wherever we may go. And may God’s blessing rest upon each one of us now and always. Amen.
May God bless you all.

PRAYERS FOR THE WEEK Loving God, you call us to respond, to
receive, and to let go, and invite us to
trust your gospel call, your gospel way and your gospel life. Wherever life is full, joy is deep and grace abundant, or where these gifts are yet glimpsed and yearned for, help us to let go and to take up, to give and
to receive and, in all our ventures and deliberations, to be inspired and guided by the dying and rising of your Son, our shepherd, Saviour and companion. Thus, may we come to rest in your eternal self-giving love, glimpsed in beauty, received in kindness, made known in fellowship with you and
one another, enduring forever in our hills, valleys and dwelling places. Amen. James Tebbutt, Cumbria District Chair
