Teaching, Learning & AssessmentRefresher TrainingJanuary 10th, 2014
Aims of the Session
• To review & refresh lesson planning practice
• To review and discuss strategies for differentiation within lessons
Session Objectives
By the end of the session, participants will be able to/have completed:• A lesson plan (or the outline of one) which
demonstrates key components as discussed• Demonstrate an understanding of a variety of
strategies for differentiation and include at least 3 examples within their lesson plan
WHY PLAN?WHAT MAKES A GOOD LESSON?
Discuss!!
Lesson Planning Basics
• Set learning Aims (what the teacher intends to deliver)
• Set Learning Outcomes (what the learner will be able to demonstrate in terms of knowledge, skills, understanding by end of lesson)
• Plan for range of learning activities so all learners will reach learning goals
• Plan assessment strategies to measure extent to which outcomes have been achieved
• Plan for 70:30, learner:teacher input
Excellent Planning Would• Ensure each learning outcome has assessment strategy to measure
each learner’s progress• Build differentiation into foundation of lesson• Build assessment of existing knowledge/prior learning at beginning
of every lesson• Ensure a strong, clear beginning when learning outcomes and
goals are shared with learners• Ensure lesson has logical development and uses differentiated
activities and resources where appropriate• Incorporate a range of teaching and assessment strategies• Include a summary/recap of learning at end of session, possibly
including short reflective record by learner (exit card/learning log)
DifferentiationOne Size Does Not Fit All!
• Enabling learners to travel, via different routes, in different vehicles to a clearly signposted destination
Differentiation Basics
KNOW YOUR LEARNERS & THEIR NEEDSBuild a detailed group profile based on:• Initial assessment• Varied induction activities to test the water• Ongoing observation of learners and their progress• Consistent, regular checking of learning
Keep the profile current & use it as basis for lesson planning
Differentiation Basics
Build differentiation into the structure of lessons:• Set differentiated outcomes to stretch each
learner, e.g. ‘All will be able to…Some will be able to…A few will be able to…’
• Differentiate content, pace, process and assessment
Differentiation Basics
Start lesson with assessment of existing knowledge for example:• Targeted questioning• Peer interviewing• Quizzes & gapped handouts• Gallery walk questions
Note: Do change lesson plan if there are obvious gaps in previous learning that prevent moving on
Differentiation Basics
Engage and Maintain Learners’ Interest:• Begin lessons with variety of engaging activities• Organise flexible groupings• Use leveled targeted questioning (‘what if?’, ‘why?’ to stretch more
able• Design tiered activities including extension activities• Use leveled handouts• Use scaffolding/ladders where needed• Give instructions in different ways – verbal, written, recorded• Differentiate time given for tasks as needed• Facilitate peer explanations and assessment• Implement rigorous formative assessment
And please don’t forget:
• Use ILT to enhance learning when possible
• Plan promotion of equality and diversity into schemes of work and lesson plans
• Examples in good practice will be circulated
