Lesson aim: to talk about relationships and break-up

1. Write down the following words on the board.

alimony child support Dear John letter to grow apart toditch somebody to get the push

a. Ask which words Ss do understand and then elicit simple definitions (e.g.

alimony: money given to ex-wife). Do not worry about correct grammar atthis point. What's important is that everyone understands all the words.

b. Ask if there are any words Ss don't understand. If there are - let other Ssexplain. If nobody knows - ask Ss to use dictionaries to look them up. Classfeedback.

c. Based on the vocabulary given - ask Ss to guess what the topic of thelesson is.

2. Ask Ss to come up with synonyms to the word to break-up (e.g. todivorce sb, to separate, to split up, to dump sb, to walk out, to run out onsb)

3. Ss work in pairs or small groups coming up with reasons why peoplebreak-up (e.g. they grow apart, argue, fall in love with sb else). After a fewminutes elicit answers and put them on the board.

4.Play the song once. Ss listen to find answers to two questions:

1. Who broke-up with whom? (the girl with the guy)

2. What were the reasons for breaking up? (lots of reasons e.g. the guypointed out her wrongs, questioned what she spent, judged her etc)

5. Distribute the lyrics handout with gaps (available at the very bottom ofthis lesson). Give Ss a few minutes to look through. Play the song again. Ssfill in the gaps.
