Special Tomato's range of products from the USA were developed by a dad whose daughter has Down's Syndrome. When Carrie Bergeron was born in 1976, her dad was already starting up a company to make equipment for children with special needs. He developed the TumbleformsTM range of products with his baby daughter in mind. However, based on his experiences with Carrie, he decided to search for a new material which offered more comfort when used in therapy for long periods of time. Through trial and error he created the Soft-TouchTM material – seamless, latex-free, peel and tear resistant, anti-microbial and offering even more comfort.

The story behind the brand:

The Special TomatoTM eio Push Chair is an innovative buggy which combines a classic push chair design with the support and functionality required by children with mild to moderate postural needs. This special needs push chair, which is suitable for children from infancy up to 90lb (41kg), features padded hip and trunk laterals, a padded headrest and a 5 point harness, as well as the features you would associate with any push chair – a rain/sun canopy, a shopping basket and a lightweight easy to fold frame which will fit easily into your car. For kids who need a little more positioning, the Size 1 and 2 Soft-TouchTM Liners and Soft-TouchTM Sitters can be inserted into the Special TomatoTM eio Push Chair.

The Special TomatoTM Jogger provides the comfort and positioning needed for you and your child to enjoy the outdoors. Its lightweight frame, three large pneumatic tyres and manoeuvrable design make it suitable for everyday use around town, on long walks in the city or country, or even if you want to go jogging. And of course, it folds down to fit easily in your car. From a practical point of view, its canopy protects from sun or rain, and its washable upholstery is reversible, so that the canvas side can be used in the summer and the fleece side in the winter. It combines all these features you would expect from a jogger with positioning for your child, including a 5 point harness. And for kids who need a little more positioning, the Size 1 and 2 Soft-TouchTM Liners and Soft-TouchTM Sitters can be inserted into the Special TomatoTM Jogger and an optional head support attached.

The Special TomatoTM Height RightTM Chair provides comfortable seating at home or in school for children who require minimal to moderate support*. It allows easy interaction with peers and is the perfect seating solution for meal times and table top activities for children of all ages. This durable seat offers an incredible growth range from 6 months to 15 years old, via the adjustability of its seat and footrest. The solid footrest gives the child a safe and secure platform for correct positioning of their legs and feet. Optional footcups are available if required. Soft-TouchTM seat and back cushions, which are made of moulded, seamless, wipe-clean material, can be easily attached to the chair for children who need additional lateral support.

The Special TomatoTM Multi-Positioning Seat (MPS) with Mobile Floor Kit is a soft, lightweight, durable seating system on a mobile wooden indoor base suitable for children with moderate postural needs. The modular seating cushions allow for individual adjustment and years of growth. The back and headrest cushions move up and down using a hoop and lock (Velcro-type) track, while the seat base cushion is easily replaced by an extended cushion as your child grows. Attachment straps mean that the seat can be removed from the mobile base and attached to standard chairs at home, at school or in the community, instantly bringing your child up to table level.

The seamless, latex-free cushions are peel, bite and tear resistant, impermeable to fluids, soft yet durable. They are supported by an outer shell which maintains the child’s positioning. The cushion material can withstand cracking, is anti-microbial and cleans easily with common disinfectants.

The seat base cushion has a total of 30° of adjustment at the hips giving 15° of hip flexion or 15° of hip extension which allows the pelvis to be properly aligned. In addition, the mobile base includes a tilt-in-space feature.

The Special TomatoTM Soft-TouchTM Sitters live up to their name, making a comfortable alternative seating solution for children with mild to moderate postural needs. Combined with the mobile tilt wedge with its four lockable castors, the seat can be easily manoeuvred and tilted up to 25°. The sitter can be removed from the base and securely attached to standard chairs found in the home, school or community. The seat parts of Sizes 1 and 2 can be inserted into the Special TomatoTM eio Push Chair or Jogger to give a comfortable mobility solution.

The optional Floor Wedge kit features a rigid base onto which the seat can be attached. This provides stability and lifts the sitter slightly off the floor. This is an ideal solution to bring children down to the same level as their peers while playing or during circle activities.

Made of latex-free, seamless material, the Soft-TouchTM Sitters are peel, bite and tear resistant, impermeable to fluids and withstand cracking. The soft, durable material is anti-microbial and cleans easily with common disinfectant.

Portable Potty Seat

The Special TomatoTM Portable Potty Seat is designed to provide a comfortable, hygienic toileting solution in the home, at school or out and about. It fits easily into standard toilet seats, with or without the addition of the optional splash guard. The potty seat is made from the unique Soft-TouchTM material which is seamless and latex-free and makes the product peel and tear resistant and able to withstand cracking. Most importantly, the material is impermeable to fluids making the Potty Seat easy to clean and hygienic. It can be easily cleaned with warm water and mild soap.*

The optional, flexible Splash Guard can be removed for cleaning. It has enough rigidity to maintain its shape while being flexible enough to fold out of the way for transfers on and off the toilet.

The Portable Potty Seat comes with a drawstring backpack for easy transportation. The backpack has a plastic liner for hygiene purposes, and an outside pocket which can hold wipes or other necessities. It is designed to look like a standard backpack which makes it very discreet. Both the Portable Potty Seat and the Splash Guard fit into the backpack for a complete portable toileting solution.
