Purple VRI Basics
When the session begins, the VI will greet you.
Video interpreters relay your spoken English in American Sign Language (ASL), so there may be a delay between when you say something and when the interpreter signs to the individual. The video interpreter will let you know if you need to speak at a slower pace.
The VI may begin to sign to the deaf individual, ensuring a good match.
Before the session begins, check that your equipment is plugged-in and on.
The VI may determine
two VIs are needed
during a VRI session.
This is determined on
several factors, including
the number of partici-
pants and complexity of
the conversation.
For the best communication, the hearing individual(s) need to
sit in front of the microphone. The deaf individual(s) need to sit
in front of the camera.
To ensure you and your
participants receive the
best VRI session experi-
ence, the VI may ask you
to move to a different
seat or location, or adjust
the microphone, sight-
line, placement of the
VRI device or lighting.
Let the VI know the participant names and the purpose of the interpreting session (meeting, emergency, appointment, etc.).

Is Purple VRI right for me?VRI is ideal for a one-on-one conversation or with several people in the room. While Purple VRI is an excellent option for immediate, on-demand interpreting sessions, it is not a comprehensive replacement for on-site interpreting services. Purple VRI may not be the best solution in situations involving multiple participants without a firm speaking protocol, complex exchanges or sessions with individuals who have a secondary disability (i.e. low vision) that may impede their ability to understand the remote video interpreter.
