Dearest Knitters, I absolutely must start this month’s newsletter with a GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Cheryl Cauthen-Bond for putting together the World Wide Knit in Public Day. Once again it was a big success. I also would like to thank all the local yarn stores who both donated items to make it a great day and also came and displayed their merchandise. I really appreciate the support you have shown the Guild and look forward to working with you all in the future.  Admittedly, it is a little hot in July to have a big

wooly project in your lap. That being said, there are a million great small projects to get after. Why not learn to knit socks this summer? Or, what about making dish cloths and face cloths now so you are way ahead of the game when the holidays roll around? Baby hats are always needed for our various charities. For that matter, any hat is a good small project. Whatever you do, I know it will be lovely. You folks are mind bogglingly talented.  I wait all year for the greatest sporting event of the year, the Tour de France. If you have never watched any professional cycling, I would encourage you to watch this. Every single day is like the Super Bowl. It is all guts and glory. As for me, I will be parked in front of my TV with my knitting needles a-clicking all month long.  Don't forget that our meeting this month is on the second Monday of the month because of the Independence Day holiday. See you at Westminster on July 11 at 7 p.m. for our yarn sale. There will be loads of bargains to be had.  Life is Good!

Summer is in full swing, and so is the Summer Sock Spectacular. We're in the thick of classes in technique and design for all levels. There are spots left if you've got a socky itch to scratch, so check out the offerings on our website. Check out the Express Sox series, teaching you the basics in half the time, or dive in deep with stranded colorwork in August. We've haven't forgotten you crocheters, either: you too can join in the madness with super speedy techniques to create your own pair.

Knit or crochet, you are invited to show off your creative side. The Sock It To Us contest is in full swing, and we're looking for you to Sock Us Out with your best work. You have to use fingering weight yarn purchased from KnitWits. Enter either the best knitted/crocheted sock category, or really test your skills and show off a piece that isn't a sock. We're giving away most excellent prizes to the people's choice in each category! Deadline for entries is Aug. 1, 2011. Oh hey – almost forgot Christmas in July! It was a hoot last year, and we're breaking out the holly and garland again this year. We'll have great gift ideas to buy AND make all month long (felted bags, easy-to-finish projects and more), plus a little nudge in the right direction (ahem … sale) at the end of the month to help you help the elves out this Christmas. Knitters Get Social Online magazine Slate recently featured an article about Ravelry.com, calling it the “best

social network you’ve (probably) never heard of.” Well, maybe non-knitters haven’t heard of it, but Slate also notes that Ravelry’s users “absolutely

adore” the site and consider it an important part of their social lives. Writer Farhad Manjoo goes on to note that the

fact that Ravelry, with 1.4 million registered users, is about one-five-hundredth the size of Facebook is one

of the reasons for its success. Social sites work better when they are smaller and tailored to cater to a specific group, argues Manjoo, who is not a knitter but is married to one. You can read the full Slate article about Ravelry at www.slate.com/id/2298584/.
