SCANDINAVIA – THE TOP OF EUROPEThe region of Scandinavia includes Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Whilst Finland is often included when this region is referred to, it is not strictly speaking, part of Scandinavia but is one of the Nordic countries. However, for purposes of travel and to simplify the explanation of Finland’s position in relation to the Scandinavian countries, it is convenient to loosely include it as part of Scandinavia. The Nordic countries encompass Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, Norway, and the territories of the Årland Islands and the Faroe Islands.

Stretching across the top of Russia, Finland, Sweden and Norway, is the region of Lapland, a state within each of those countries. It’s a very special place, preserved by the cold winters and mild summers. This is also home to the Sami people, the oldest ethnic tribe in Europe and traditionally reindeer herders.

WHERE WE GOAlthough we offer travel throughout Scandinavia, our winter products are focused on Lapland in Finland and in the small village of Pyhätunturi (meaning ‘Holy Fell’) situated one and a half hours north east of Rovaniemi the capital of Finnish Lapland. It is a well known ski resort with less than 1,000 inhabitants, popular with the Finns and not overly crowded with foreign visitors during high seasons. The village has a hotel, cottages, supermarket, post office, restaurants, souvenir shops and an impressive Nature Centre. And being situated out in the countryside, the Polar Night skies are less exposed to light pollution making it easier to observe the Northern Lights when they choose to reveal themselves.

ACTIVITIESPyhätunturi has activities to suit everyone – husky and reindeer safaris, snowmobiling, ice fishing, downhill and cross country skiing, snowshoe walking, tobogganing and more.

SKIINGSkiing in Lapland is probably not the first activity which comes to mind. It may then come as a surprise that Pyhä rates amongst the best ski resorts in Finland. Ski equipment is available for hire from a well-equipped ski shop and lessons can be arranged with qualified English speaking ski instructors.

ACCOMMODATION HOTELThe location of Hotel Pyhätunturi on the side of the mountain provides a spectacular view of the surrounding area and, being situated right beside the ski slope, makes this a perfect ski-in-ski-out location. The hotel has a restaurant, bar, sauna and a gym.

APARTMENTSSet to the back of the hotel, the Pyhä Suites have all you need for a comfortable stay. With two or three bedrooms – these apartments come with a fully equipped kitchen, lounge, bathroom and sauna. And for more convenience, easy access to an on site laundromat. Breakfast and dinner at the hotel can be arranged on request.

OUTDOOR CLOTHINGWe include an outdoor one piece Gortex suit and boots suitable for all your outdoor activities. Whilst a good selection of sizing is available, sizing must be advised in advance to allow you to make alternative arrangements should your sizing not be available.

AURORA BOREALIS (NORTHERN LIGHTS)Nature’s fireworks are the closest description of the Northern Lights. Most often appearing as a yellow-green arch on the horizon the lines of the lights are not as distinct as a rainbow but are best imagined as colour thrown to the wind. Although the Lights appear some 200 days of the year they are more visible during winter with the shorter day light hours.

THE LAPLAND SPECIALISTSThe specialist knowledge we have of Lapland comes from the owner Claudia Pallaspuro, having lived and worked in tourism in Finnish Lapland for a number of years. Her passion is to create memorable and unique experiences for her clients in the magic surroundings of Lapland. Claudia’s husband Simo, is Finnish.

Foxfire on the snow – viewing the Northern Lights is a truly remarkable experience. Finnish folklore tells of a firefox scampering across the snow sending millions of snowflakes adrift with its tail filling the sky with celestial lights. October to late March is the time for the Lights with January to April being months with clearer night skies bringing more possibilities of seeing the Lights. Increase your chance of viewing the Lights by adding the Hurtigruten cruise down the coast of Norway.
