A nod to the Old World masters shines through in Mally DeSomma's vibrant
still life and figure paintings. "There are many masters that have inspired me -
Rembrandt with his chiaroscuro, Van Gogh and Mary Cassatt with the freedom
of movement and rich vibrant colors in their paintings," DeSomma explains.
For DeSomma, taking the traditional approach starts with a precise drawing.
The painting is then blocked in with either complementary colors or a mono-
chromatic palette using one middle value color with different pressure to create
the values. "Often I use acrylic
paint and cover the paper with a
brilliant yellow or orange as an
underpainting for a landscape or a
still life. For figure painting, I may
turn to burnt sienna to create a
more dramatic look," she says. To
keep colors rich and the lights bril-
liant as the painting develops, she
is careful to check her drawing and
steps back often from the easel.
Earthy objects such as fruits, vegetables, pottery and cloth with rich, vibrant
color often attract DeSomma's eye as she considers subject matter. "I choose
objects that have meaning to me. Maybe a vase or jar that was a gift from a
friend, or an item from my mother's or grandmother's home," she says. Local
farmers markets offer inspiration as she picks up produce in season to add to
her still life compositions.
She is a fan of NuPastel, Sennelier and Terry Ludwig pastels. "NuPastels are
great for drawing and blocking-in and they're a terrific blending tool," she
adds. "Sennelier and Terry Ludwigs create beautiful creamy strokes and in-
credible intense color." She finds Sennelier and Terry Ludwig brands offer
options to keep lights brilliant and darks rich. She prefers Wallis, Art Spec-
trum, and Sennelier La Carte papers which allow her to build up many layers.
"I find pastels always create a fresh, beautiful painting," she says.
As a pastel loyalist, DeSomma
started painting with the medium
early in her artistic journey. "I
love the versatility and gorgeous
array of values and colors," she
says. Ease of transport and set-
up is a plus. "I recently went to
France to paint with other artists
from CPS. I loved the ease of
pulling out my Heilman box and
setting up in minutes. I didn't have
the headache of dragging around
canvas, paints and turpentine.”

A devotion to teaching art also drives
DeSomma. Students often ask about
how she developed her unique style. "I
tell students that they can learn to paint
from me, but each of them will develop
their own style. I assure them that their
unique style will emerge," she says. "I
encourage students to experiment with
different mediums, but to also concen-
trate on one medium to get a good
sense of the technique,” she says.
She took courses at Paier School of Art
and Quinnipiac College and studied
with many master painters throughout
the years. “My experience has shown
me that it's much better to be taught the
traditional way. I enjoy bringing out the
artistic talents that each student has
waiting to burst out,” DeSomma says.
“It’s a shame that most people are
taught on the left side of the brain. As
we leave kindergarten, all the wonder-
ful imagination of a child is put on the
back burner. We disregard an important
part of our learning and creativity. Art
is so good for our health," she adds.
Mally DeSomma resides in Waterbury.
She is represented by and on the board
of Fine Line Art Gallery in Woodbury
and is represented by the Gregory
James Gallery in New Milford and the
PS Gallery in Litchfield. She can be
