Treating water MAIN PARAMETERS THAT EFFECT TREATMENT

SALINITY

For chemical systems this is a limiting factor

UV systems are independent of salinity

FRESH WATER (low salinity)

Can be challenging for all types of technologies

TEMPERATURE

For chemical systems this is a limiting factor

Medium pressure UV systems are independent of the BW temp.

Low pressure UV systems are often dependent on the BW temp.

UV-T

Chemical systems are not influenced by UV-T

Main parameter for UV systems

Treating water

UV-T

*UV-T stands for UV transmittance and

is the ratio of the light entering the

water to that exiting the water.

For UV systems, UV-T is the most

important parameter indicating the

efficiency of the system to treat poor

quality water and at lowest possible

power consumption.

USCG status on MPN method

• The use of an MPN-based method to evaluate mixed assemblages of organisms in ballast water is going to be validated by Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) technical panel.

• United states have commented in official paper PPR4/7 to IMO that “A version of the MPN-Dilution-Culture Motility Method is currently undergoing a review within the Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) Program in the United States. This verification assessment will evaluate the method through trials in multiple locations”.

• If the panel finds an MPN method to be acceptable, USCG will have to make a policy decision or rulemaking to incorporate the EPA approved method.

• It should be noted that MEPC 70 agreed to that viable organisms mean organisms that have the ability to successfully generate new individuals in order to reproduce the species. The MPN method is designed to mesures organisms ability to generate new individuals.

The MPN method is undergoing a serious evaluation and it is likely that it will be approved

PureBallast 3.1

• No limitation in salinity or temperature

• Tested and approved in all three water

qualities: − Fresh water − Brackish water − Marine water

• Same hardware and power consumption as current IMO version

• 3 days hold-time applied to be able to comply with CMFDA/FDA stain method

• UVI limit of 530 - 820 W/m2 for half respective full flow

• Approved to be installed in hazardous zones at both foreign and US flagged vessels PureBallast Sales Presentation 20170322

Page 14: PureBallast Sales Presentation - ANAVEIt was exactly 100 years ago that the US Navy asked Alfa Laval to develop a centrifugal oil-cleaning separator, which was delivered in 1917. A

Why is UVI stated on the USCG TA

certificate and not UVT?

• Also the IMO version has limit on UVI but corresponding UVT was stated on certificate – nothing new

• Poor correlation between UVI and UVT − Up to 10 percentage points difference

• Biological efficiency correlates better to UVI • The system measures UVI – not UVT

− Only measured parameters can be used for control of the system

• The system reduce the flow rate if UVI is low to maintain the UV dose − CFD calculations is the base for UVI regulation − This have been verified by testing at different flow rates and UVI

• Impossible to compare UVI values between different manufacturers

Hard to compare systems based on UVI/UVT performance only

PureBallast compliance with revised G8

Revised G8 requirement (extract)

1. A BWMS that has not been tested at all the temperatures

and salinities; limits should be defined on TAC cover

sheet

2. The System Design Limitations should be specified on

the Type Approval Certificate in a table that identifies

each water quality and operational parameter together

with the validated low and/or high parameter values

3. The shipboard test unit should be of a capacity that allows

for further validation of the mathematical modelling and/or

calculations for scaling, and preferably selected at the

upper limit

4. Viable organisms mean organisms that have the ability to

successfully generate new individuals in order to

reproduce the species.

5. At least two test cycles in each salinity should be

conducted in order to evaluate compliance with the D-2

standard at the minimum holding time specified by the

BWMS manufacturer.

6. The range of operational flow rates that a BWMS is

expected to achieve in service, at the maximum and

minimum operational flow rates

PureBallast Capability

1. No temperature or salinity limitations. Tested in all three

salinities under challenging conditions. Successfully tested

at 3.4-23 °C

2. PureBallast has been tested down to UVT of 42% in all

salinities at full flow, which is market leading

3. Tests already conducted accordingly. The largest 1000

m3/h reactor was used to verify biological and operational

performance during shipboard testing

4. PureBallast has a technology leading performance when

evaluated with MPN method. MPN measures ability to

reproduce according to IMO definition

5. Tests at minimum hold time are scheduled to be

commenced in March 2017 (Old G8 required 5 days).

Those are the only additional tests needed

6. Testing at low flows were conducted during Explosion proof

verification of PureBallast 3 by DNV

PureBallast 3 is compatible with the revised G8 testing guidelines!

PUREBALLAST APPROACH Design choices to meet with the needs of the Ship owner

• In US, California seeks approval for BW fines,

• USD 27,000 / day, per violation Compliance

• Least limitations, most opportunities for worry free operations

• Soils, fresh water, low temperatures Performance

• Smart choices upfront, keeps the costs down long term

Opex/LCC

• Intuitive use, and safety measures, assure that the human factor do not cause non-compliance, nor severe situations like breakdowns/explosions

UV Lamp and Quartz Sleeve Performance

• Medium pressure lamps for higher intensity

– 15 to 20 times the germicidal effect than other

lamps

– faster disinfection and greater penetration

destroying organisms

– broader wave form creating permanent damage

DNA

• Synthetic quartz sleeve for optimal disinfection

of treated water

– combined with the Medium Pressure lamp

produces extended wavelength range

– optimises UV tranmissivity

UV-dose = intensity X exposure time
