There are two types of Diabetes mellitus – Type I and Type II. Type I Diabetes is a genetic disease, and requires insulin therapy, usually from an early age. Type II diabetes (DM II) is a progressive, chronic disease that is a “disease of lifestyle” – it is preventable, treatable and reversible.

Diabetes is a “blood sugar” disease – the mechanisms in the body that help move sugar out of the blood and into our cells do not work properly, and over a long period of time that extra sugar begins to damage the body. Type II diabetes is what is called a “silent” disease – the symptoms of diabetes usually do not show up until the disease is well-established. BC health suggests routine screening every 3-years for people over 40; more frequent screening is advised for those with risk factors.

Risk factors for diabetes include obesity; being over 40 years of age; having a close relative with DM II; being a member of a high risk population (Aboriginal, Hispanic, South Asian, Asian, or African descent); and having other conditions associated with insulin resistance -. dyslipidemia, hypertension, abdominal obesity, vascular disease, schizophrenia and use of antipsychotic medications.

Treatment of DM II should always start with diet and lifestyle. A whole-foods diet that focuses on low-glycemic foods with an elimination of refi ned sugars is essential. Activity is also an integral part the treatment of DM II. Regular activity is excellent for improving blood sugar and well-being.

There are many nutrients and herbs that can have a positive infl uence on blood sugar levels, which have other mechanisms than pharmaceutical medications. Nutrients like chromium, and alpha-lipoic acid help to make our body more sensitive to our own insulin (making medications work better) and directly lower blood sugar. There are also a variety of benefi cial herbs such as Galega (Goat’s Rue), Cinnamon, and Gymnema which lower blood sugar and may decrease dependence on medication.

There are many options to the treatment of diabetes. There is no substitute for good diet and lifestyle, but additional support is available through supplements and herbal therapy. Extra support off ered by a naturopathic physician can also benefi t pre-diabetes, and help halt the process before it progresses to full blown diabetes. Your Naturopathic physician is trained to work with your medications and your individual case to give you the best chance for halting and reversing diabetes.

We can help you understand how your medications work, warn you on interactions between other medications and natural supplements, and explain how to properly use your blood glucose meter and diabetic supplies.

Managing your medications

More than 80% of people diagnosed with diabetes are taking prescription medications to control their blood sugars. The majority of these people are taking more than one medication which may cause confusion and raise many questions. Speak with one of our pharmacist to discuss when to take your medications, why you are taking your medications, how to take them, and how to manage potential side effects. Don’t forget to mention any over the counter medications and natural supplements you are taking as many of them can interact with your medications and affect you blood sugar levels.

Natural health supplements

There are many natural supplements and herbal remedies marketed for people with diabetes. However, only a few of

them have clinical evidence to prove their effectiveness. Our natural health advisors and pharmacists can work together with you and your doctor to find the most suitable option for you. Be sure to always check with your pharmacist or doctor to make sure they do not interfere with your medications or put you at risk of low blood sugar levels. It is also good to start with a single-ingredient supplement at a moderate dose. This way you can determine if the benefits, side effects, interactions, are related to that particular supplement.

Monitoring blood sugar levels

Checking your blood glucose levels is particularly important if you are starting a new medication or supplement. Make sure you know how often to test your blood sugar levels and what your targets are. If you are unsure on how to use your glucose meter, talk to our pharmacists. Always record your results and understand what your blood sugar levels mean. Recognize the symptoms of low or high blood glucose, and how to treat low blood glucose. Lastly, speak to your pharmacist to update your blood glucose meter every 2 years to ensure accuracy.
