OUTLINE Background of University Center Grant
IARC-Technical Advisory Group
Background of Indiana LDM and RDM Projects
What will we cover today?
Common Toolbox for Interactive Spatial Decision Support System
Strategic Doing Framework
Q & A
EDA University CenterThis 5-year grant includes significant inputs from the Local/Community
Decision Maker team and will require some new directions and tools to be
developed, for example:
Capacity for custom regional aggregation (eg. Corridor-based,
County-based, Watershed-based)
Additional data to support entrepreneurship and innovation support
networks
Connect land use, transportation and natural resources to clusters to
enhance identification of distribution and supply chain opportunities
Training for IARC members
IARC-TAG TeamEarly adopters of the RDM platform
Evaluate the prototype systems by participating in webinars, meetings and completing exercises
Provide feedback to the R & D team• How easy or difficult to use the interface?• Tools• Data gaps

Decision Support Tools for Planning
Regional Decision MakerRegional Decision Maker developed to facilitate a regional
planning view; enable discussions across county and state borders
Several national level data sets are incorporated into the RDM, including special data sets (e.g. Industries, businesses and occupation clusters, which are regional in nature)
Allows for more detailed development of data for mega-regions especially the mid-west mega-region where sustainable economic development is of interest for the EDA University Center and its stakeholders (e.g. regional planning agencies and ED practitioners)
RDM – Regional Decision Maker
Designed to help in regional planning
Offers a variety of GIS-based data and tools
More than a dozen mapping websites

What will we cover today? Geoprocessing & SDSS
• Typology of SDSS
• Model Builder & customization
• Creating geoprocessing services
• Integration of Big Data!
• Differences from other mapping engines
Introduction to the main website under development
Common Toolbox for Interactive Spatial Decision Support System
(SDSS)
What is Geoprocessing? Allows to automate the GIS tasks (ESRI Developer Network)
Links tools and processes in sequence
Part of geospatial analysis & developing models
Input dataset Tool Output dataset
Capacity of OLAP (Online Analytical Processing)
Multidimensional Database (MDB) vs. Relational Database
Basis for developing SDSS (Spatial Decision Support Systems)
Spatial Decision Support System SDSS is one of many types of DSS (Decision Support Systems)
DSS varies from data- to knowledge- to model-driven (Power, 2003)
Earliest example of SDSS-
Geo-data Analysis and Display System (GADS) [IBM Research Lab,
1970s]
Man computer interaction and problem solving
Expert systems can be integrated
Expert system (rule based) + GIS + sensors [WaterKY.org]
Artificial Intelligence & Data Mining techniques
Agent-based Modeling Platform, for example GAMA
