Wednesday March 13, 2019 From Sue Staffing Update Our two stalwart Library staff members in Alison Carmine and Jennie Jones are finishing up at Hampton shortly to enjoy a slightly less hectic lifestyle. Both have worked tirelessly at our school for many years, initially as volunteers and more recently on the payroll. Their respective children attended our school over a number years and as parents, they were keen to become involved in the fabric of school life. Fortunately for us, that interest and passion has continued for decades. In many ways, they have enacted the saying, it takes a village to raise the child’. Alison commenced at Hampton in 1997 as a volunteer parent in the Library. She displayed an efficient approach in all aspects of the management of the Library space and book stock. However, it was apparent to all teachers and students that her passion was in growing interest in all books, literature and learning. She has worked tirelessly to arouse interest in specific books, promote curiosity in children and to create a safe haven in the Library for children to explore, relax, interact and enjoy books. She has also been keen to meet teacher requests and has frequently searched well beyond Hampton to obtain resources and specific references to address numerous topics for both teachers and children, in so doing enriching our book stock. She has been alert to bargains and regularly devoted her own time to collect some of these book bargains! Jennies time at Hampton has been slightly more varied, she commenced volunteering in classrooms and the Library, took on an education support role supporting individual children where her kindness and patience were abundantly evident. She has regularly attended school discussions and meetings well after her children left the school, showing her passion for education and her support for our school and factors that might impact on us accordingly. Jennie has been playing a support role in the Library over the last few years and has maintained a calm and very welcoming approach managing our enthusiastic children has they forage for the right bookat lunchtimes in particular. Both Alison and Jennie have left an indelible impression on Hampton. They are community minded, industrious, ethical and very caring people who are the first to offer a hand to help. I extend my sincere thanks to both and wish them much happiness in their future endeavours. We are currently interviewing for replacement staff. Pupil Free Day Friday 22 March

House Swimming Sports As a result of feedback from parents and staff, we have decided to broaden our base for the house swimming sports next year. We are keen to maximise the community involvement and replicate the delightful atmosphere that prevails at the athletics sports at Sandringham Athletics track. This particular event also attracts very strong community involvement. We have booked the pool for February, 2020 and will take all Grade 3-6 to the pool children to: participate in trials for various 50 metre events participate in 30 metre races in shallow water, possibly using kick boards or other flotation

devices for those who are less confident or capable swimmers have an opportunity to use a water slide or something similar enjoy a barbeque lunch. Our intention is to have all children in the pool at some stage, getting wet, swimming in races and generally enjoying the water activities. Our stronger swimmers will be timed to determine the composition of our district swimming team in 50 metre freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly events and various relay events. School Council Elections The ballot for the parent representatives on council closed this afternoon at 4.00pm. The result of the ballot will be declared tomorrow via Compass. School Council Annual General Meeting: Tuesday 19 March, 2019 The School Council’s Annual General Meeting will be conducted on Tuesday of next week, 19 March. This meeting will be the last for our retiring councillors and the first for our newly elected councillors. The purpose of the AGM is to table a report on the progress and achievements for the 2018 school year. Areas for discussion will include: student enrolments student absence student achievement in the Victorian Curriculum using teacher assessments, NAPLAN and

various additional test instruments curriculum priorities staff, parent and student opinion school finances. Interested parents are most welcome to attend; the Annual General Meeting will commence at 7.30pm in the staffroom and conclude at 8.15pm. International Visitors Today we welcomed a number of international visitors to our school from Canada, Singapore, China and the United States, all of whom are involved in education. They were keen to observe the pedagogical practice, student learning and student voice at Hampton. The areas we showcased included: Writing at Foundation, Mathematics at Grades 6 and 4, digital technologies at Grade 1, inquiry learning at Grade 2 and 5, dance and music at Grade 3 and visual arts at Grade 4. More reflections on the Carnival I liked the jumping castle maze the best. I bought a dog and a kiwi bird from the toy stall. The waterslides were a bit scary because they were a bit big. They were for big children. I think there could be more toys for sale next time. Phoebe Schmitt in FA

Academic Excellence Awards Each week at our whole school assemblies, academic excellence will be acknowledged by me. The children receiving the academic excellence awards are those achieving well above the expected level in a specific curriculum area and occasionally in a number of areas; in some cases this might be 12 months or more in advance of the expected grade level. Congratulations go to: Lucy Malherbe in FC for displaying a positive approach to her learning and achieving commendable results in reading. Excellent Application Emma Moragiannis in 1C has been working hard with reading and writing with Mrs Van Pelt and has made excellent progress this year. Emma has shown: - a very positive attitude to school - tried very hard and worked consistently to complete all tasks - determination to improve - pride in her achievements.

Art Masters The following have shown excellence in their art work after having studied the techniques of Vincent Van Gogh: Connor Richards and Piper Roberts in 5A, Clowie Barker in 5C, Malthe Milton-Hopballe in 5D, Flynn Grogan, Holly Lambeth and Kira Vary in 6A, Nina Canwell in 6B, Patrick Hill and Bianca Stewart in 6C, Kate Morrison and Saxon Taranto in 6D.

Danni Peebles, our Art Teacher has noted the following: Learning Intention: To develop portraiture techniques and experiment with mark making. In order to make and respond to visual artworks, the students discussed Vincent Van Gogh and explored a number of his self-portraits. Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch artist, born in 1853. He is considered one of the most famous, influential and important artists in the history of Western art. Considered a Post-Impressionist, Vincent struggled to connect with people and suffered with mental health issues throughout his life. He found solace in painting, it gave him peace and joy and he committed himself to it with immense passion. Vincent painted the people and places around him and his work is full of bold colour, and textured and expressive brushwork. The students observed one of Van Gogh’s self-portraits and discussed the movement of line within the artwork as well as the colours that could be noted. Considering correct proportions, the students divided the face into sections and with grey pencils drew the main facial features lightly onto brown craft paper. Using the Van Gogh self-portrait as a reference, they made marks copying the colours, both cool and warm and used white to highlight. When referencing the image, they concentrated on the colours and detail rather than what it depicted. The art work is extremely impressive! Sue Knight Principal

THANK YOU! Following on from Sue’s wrap up of this year’s fabulous Twilight Carnival, we wanted to say a special thank you to our AMAZING Volunteer Parent Committee who worked hard for many months in the lead up to the Carnival and beyond. Together we achieved so much, and had lots of fun and laughs along the way. We are so excited that despite the heat and very challenging conditions on the day, we raised over $63,000 - which is a HUGE amount for our school!! The reward of seeing all the kids’ faces filled with joy made all the sweat and sore feet worth it! We can’t thank you enough for all your efforts. Emily, Kim, Georgie, Emily & Mike xxxx

The Logistics Crew – huge job of “begging, borrowing and stealing” all the marquees, trestle tables, chairs, camp stoves – you name it, Mike Cahill organized to borrow it! There were so many mums and dads who helped out on very hot days with collecting equipment, setting up marquees, moving tables and chairs around, dropping equipment back – THANK YOU! Mike’s main crew who helped lead the charge include Tom Knowles, Chris Mitchell, Steve Crowe, Mick Suddes and Martin Storey. “Busy beavers” behind the scenes - Tammy Edelsten & Sarah McNamara who quietly helped out for days and days in the lead up to the Carnival. All our fabulous HPS Teachers who volunteered on a variety of stalls and were so helpful with all the disruptions to normal school life in the week leading up the Carnival, with special mention to John & Tim who certainly had a busy night…..:) HPS Students – who couldn’t help the Committee more!!! We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and energy from so many students who helped carry, unload, assemble, clean and do so many odd jobs!
