Donor Apheresis

What is Apheresis

Advantages of Apheresis

How I can become an Apheresis donor

What is apheresis?

Blood has several components, including red blood cells, platelets and plasma.

Donor apheresis is a special type of blood donation in which a specific

component, viz. platelets, granulocytes (white cells) plasma or plasma is

withdrawn from the donor using a special equipment called as cell separator;

the remaining components are returned to the donor's blood circulation. This

procedure takes about 90 minutes during which time the donor is constantly

monitored by trained medical personnel.

What is the advantage of Apheresis?

Platelet concentrate prepared from one unit of whole blood contains very few

platelets. Six to ten such whole-blood derived platelets would be required to

supply enough platelets for one patient. However, platelets donated during oneapheresis session by one donor are sufficient for one transfusion, thus reducing

the chance of transfusion transmitted infections. Patients with cancer or

leukemia or patients with blood disorders benefit immensely from such

 plateletapheresis.

The donor benefits too since there is no loss of red cells. One can donate

apheresis components more frequently than whole blood donation.

How Can I Become An Apheresis Donor?

Any healthy person who meets the criteria for whole blood donation is eligiblefor apheresis donation. Please contact the Blood Center Complex, SGPGIMS,

Lucknow for further information.

IntroductionLess than 45% blood in our country comes from Voluntary Blood Donors. Onlyabout 40% of the blood collected each year is donated in developing countries which arehome to over 80 per cent of the worldâ¼s population. The average number of blooddonations per 1,000 population is 12 times higher in high-income countries than in lowincome countries. The only way the problem of blood shortage and consequent pain and

deaths can be solved is by a regular supply of blood from safe Voluntary Blood Donors. Wehave a long way to go to ensure the safety and well being of our people. One of the ways bywhich you can truly bring about a difference in the world around you is by organizingVoluntary Blood Donation Camps. Not only will you be filling hundreds of families with joy,but you will also be giving many people a chance to do something truly amazing. There isno donation that is as big as donating a part of yourself. So, if you have chose to be the one

who will bring about a change for a better world, we wish you Good Luck. This manual iscarefully designed for the following purposes:

y To ensure that the safety and well-being of the people who come to donate istaken care of.y To serve as a reference handbook for you while you organize the camp.y To ensure that you have no problem in arranging for the camp.y To ensure that you get a good donor turnout in the camp you conduct. Please readthis manual carefully and go ahead with confidence to realize a better world.

When to Conduct A Blood Donation Camp?Choice of right time to conduct the blood donation camp is very important to ensure bestdonor turnout and more importantly to ensure that the blood you donate is utilizedproperly. Best Donor Response The donor turnout is directly related to the comfort levels

of the donor and the amount of mental pressure he/she is undergoing. For schools andcolleges, it is never a good idea to conduct a camp right before exams. For IT companies, the year closing is the busiest and the most hectic time. Choose a date when people will berelaxed and comfortable. Traditionally we have seen that most organizations conduct theblood donation camp only once a year on a particular occasion. This practice should not beblindly followed. The reason is that the occasion that we are waiting for may not overlapwith the donor convenience and consequently low donor turnout occurs. Secondly, since weare ready to donate blood again within 90 days of donation, so we must conduct at least 2blood donation camps each year. Best Utilization The pattern of blood donation camps inBangalore shows a pattern. More or less the various organizations in the city conduct campsat the same times. There are moths like October-December when the blood banks areoverstocked with blood. And at the other time of the year from January to June, widespread

shortage exists. A little planning into this aspect will ensure that the camp you conduct is of maximum use to the patients. How do I know when is the right time? CTC-Disha is aVoluntary service that networks 6 most prominent blood banks in the city. Through its tollfree helpline - 1062 it provides information on where the patient can find blood. Daily thestocks of blood are updated and maintained. When there is a citywide shortage of blood, this place is the first one to identify it. A simple procedure to find out when is the right timeto conduct a blood donation camp is to mail to the helplineat [email protected] or call 9880132850.

GETTING STARTED

Initial AssessmentsOnce you have decided that you are going to work out a Blood donation Drive at yourOrganization/Office/College, you need to figure out some things. Selection Of RightDate You must identify a suitable date. Selection of date should be such that on that daymost people are available to donate blood. Carefully plan the date as this makes a lot of difference to the number of units of blood collected. Avoid camps on early weekdays as thisis the time when there is a greater amount of focus on work. But this will be incompletewithout mentioning that the final date is decided only in consultation with the Blood
