The Low Down

Designed by Arthur Coca M.D. in 1956

Supposedly, Coca had gotten a man with diabetes off insulin based on identifying the allergen which caused diabetes using the pulse test

Believed that allergens in food which cause a variety of conditions are responsible for an increase in pulse rate post consumption of the allergenic food

Isolated foods are tested to see which ones increase the pulse rate

Diagnosis

Each meal may consist of one simple food

The pulse is taken immediately upon waking and once again before the meal

The pulse is then taken again at 30 minutes and 60 minutes after the meal

Another food is introduced then the pulse is taken at 30 and 60 minutes

And so on….

Diagnosis

The allergenic foods are identified whether or not the food abnormally speeds up the pulse

Once the food is identified and removed from the diet, the symptoms of the condition will disappear

Is it reliable?

Coca believes that the test must be true based on the following: The pulse rate in a normal person is not

affected by digestion, normal physical activity, nor normal emotional influences (i.e. stable)

If a person is not suffering from a sunburn or infection, any variation in pulse must therefore be due to an allergic reaction

The Pulse Test is very safe

Non-invasive

No special requirements (i.e. fasting, sleep requirement, etc.)

Cost effective

Easy to perform

After hours of Pubmed and Google Searching, the only testimonial that I could retreive was Dr. Bate’s

Subjects N=50

25 control subjects 25 with known diagnosed gluten allergy/intolerance Double Blind Randomized Control Study

Examiner To increase intra-examiner reliability, one trained

HCP (MD, DC, RN, etc) will perform the pulse readings using the same methods on both groups

Examiner will not know if the subject has a known allergy

All subjects will be given brown rice as the food to be tested

The subjects with the known gluten allergy/intolerance should have an increase in pulse post consumption

In order to be included in the study, the subjects must not be sunburn or have had an infection within the past 30 days.

Conclusion

Several books have been written about the pulse test, however there are currently no known studies to test it’s reliability (to my knowledge)

Some anecdotal evidence

The number of new cases of food allergies and autoimune diseases diagnosed each year is increasing

Conclusion

The pulse test may be able to help save patients both time and money due to the fact that the pulse test can quickly identify an allergen.

The patient will not need to get laboratory work (unless it is used as confirmatory)
