Labyrinth Wins Award by Alice Bongers Anns Labyrinth won an Honorable Mention Award in the 27th Annual Keep Houston Beautiful competition Alice Bongers will attend the Mayors Proud Partners Luncheon at the Hilton Houston Post Oak Hotel on October 31 to receive this award

Resident Jeanette Blesener will also receive a Certificate of Recognition from Mayor Annise Parker on Tuesday September 13 from the 2010-2011 Neighborhood Matching Grant Program

Be Aware of Suspicious Vehicles by Chuck Blesener Some of the delivery and service vehicles in our neighborhood everyday are not marked with any company name or other identification Many of these drivers and crews are of questionable character and move freely about our homes and property Most reputable companies have their name and at least their telephone number on their vehicles Many of their drivers and employees have identification

Since we recently had a home burglary where a lawn service crew was questioned and where a suspicious individual in an unmarked truck posing as a handyman was approaching older residents we are taking a closer look at who is in our neighborhood Our Deputy Constable is checking on unmarked work vehicles and questioning anyone appearing suspicious We encourage you to report anyone or any vehicle that is suspicious at a home unexpectedly or at an unusual time We also ask that you suggest to your lawn service or delivery truck or contractor that they put their name and phone number on their vehicle

Visit Moody Gardensrsquo New Rainforest Experience life at one of the most authentic rainforest recreations in the world The Moody Gardens Rainforest Pyramid is now open after a $25 million enhancement project It now takes you closer than ever to the over 1000 species of exotic plants and animals from the rainforests of Africa Asia and the Americas that populate the multi-level 10-story glass pyramid

Your journey starts with the Rainforests of the World on a new walkway overlooking the endangered giant Amazon River otter exhibit before entering the pyramid at the canopy level letting you explore the rainforest from the air and giving you a better opportunity to spot the birds sloths white-faced saki monkeys cotton-top tamarins and other free-roaming tree-dwellers The canopy walkway also includes one of Moody Gardensrsquo most beloved features a walk-in butterfly exhibit that lets you mingle with several species of beautiful butterflies

Next you journey through the cloud forests naturersquos water towers and see colorful frogs and artifacts from rainforest peoples before you make your way to the nocturnal exhibit on the rainforest floor where yoursquoll meet a prehensile-tailed porcupine an African palm civet and other creatures that only come out at night

Once on the rainforest floor yoursquoll first encounter plants and animals from the Asian rainforest including the carnivorous pitcher plant colorful orchids and fish two Chinese alligators and even a crocodile monitor a large lizard who sometimes scales the walls of its exhibit and appears to hang from the walkway above

The rainforests of Central and South America are next filled with colorful macaws perched near the flowing waterfall and the majestic spotted ocelot This section also features interactive exhibits showcasing the smells of rainforest foods and spices as well as a display of everyday products derived from the rainforest Yoursquoll also tour the Mayan ruins a replica temple home to a giant green anaconda piranhas caiman lizards and even vampire bats

Finally take a walk down the Africa trail to meet the adorable blue duiker and marvel at the spider plant giant windowpane palm and the dead rat tree (donrsquot worry the name isnrsquot a literal description) As you exit youll walk along a full wall dedicated to the ground-dwellers of the rainforest including a Damaraland mole rat Brazilian rainbow boa and a cobalt blue tarantula completing your journey from the treetops to the very floor of the breathtaking Rainforest Pyramid only found at Moody Gardens

Rose Leggio turned 97 on August 25 and celebrated her birthday with family and friends enjoying a wonderful Italian meal Theyrsquove made plans to do it again next year

Support SPP Safety Give to the Constable Program The requested Constable Patrol contribution for the coming year is $200 per household With the recent increase in crime in our area itrsquos important that we deter potential criminals with the visibility and authority provided the Constable Program We all benefit through a safer neighborhood lower crime and higher property values and itrsquos an investment worth making to keep SPP a wonderful and safe place to live

What do you get for $200 A full-time armed and uniformed deputy patrolling our neighborhood in a marked vehicle 40 hours per week Officers from the Constablersquos patrol division make numerous sweeps of SPP when our deputy is not on duty Deputy James Moulden is assigned to our neighborhood and he is very dedicated and committed to keeping SPP safe His work hours are set by the SPPCC board and are based on crime statistics for our neighborhood and the patrol hours of our Citizens Patrol A great part of the time our deputy is patrolling while we are fast asleep

Can you contribute in installments We realize that a lump sum payment may not be feasible for everyone so you are welcome to contribute in installments You may do so by mailing periodic payments or by making online payments as you are able However we are not able to send out reminders or more frequent bills so you are asked to set up your own reminder system so that you can make your desired contributions in a timely manner No donation is too smallhellipeven $5 a month can make a difference

Garden Club Gets Ready for Fall Season The September Yard-Of-The-Month award goes to Romi

Sandel at 1057 Martin Romi is active in both the Garden Club and the Civic Club as well as a working professional Good job Romi and thank you for all you do for the neighborhood

The September meeting was held at the home of Carol Jean Hebert Membership was renewed for the 2011-2012 season and a wonderful meal was served Discussions were held about the upcoming Poinsettia Sale a fundraiser held annually by the club for the benefit of the entrance beds and park beds within the neighborhood

The next meeting October 12 will be held at the home of Bob Warren amp Michael Pate at 1131 Thornton New members are encouraged to attend and see if the SPP Garden Club is of interest to you

Plaza Moms Holds Fall Festival Please attend Shopping on the Plaza on October 6 to help Plaza Moms fund their

wonderful events throughout the year It is in the Durham Elementary cafeteria on October 6 from 6 to 9 pm

Our annual Fall Festival is scheduled for Saturday October 29 from 4 to 6 pm This is a great opportunity for the kids to wear their Halloween costumes and come to Shepherd Park for fun activities food and more

Mens Group To Meet October 13 The Shepherd Park Plaza Mens Group will meet for their monthly luncheon on Thursday October 13 at

Support SPP Safety Give to the Constable Program The requested Constable Patrol contribution for the coming year is $200 per household With the recent increase in crime in our area itrsquos important that we deter potential criminals with the visibility and authority provided the Constable Program We all benefit through a safer neighborhood lower crime and higher property values and itrsquos an investment worth making to keep SPP a wonderful and safe place to live

What do you get for $200 A full-time armed and uniformed deputy patrolling our neighborhood in a marked vehicle 40 hours per week Officers from the Constablersquos patrol division make numerous sweeps of SPP when our deputy is not on duty Deputy James Moulden is assigned to our neighborhood and he is very dedicated and committed to keeping SPP safe His work hours are set by the SPPCC board and are based on crime statistics for our neighborhood and the patrol hours of our Citizens Patrol A great part of the time our deputy is patrolling while we are fast asleep

Can you contribute in installments We realize that a lump sum payment may not be feasible for everyone so you are welcome to contribute in installments You may do so by mailing periodic payments or by making online payments as you are able However we are not able to send out reminders or more frequent bills so you are asked to set up your own reminder system so that you can make your desired contributions in a timely manner No donation is too smallhellipeven $5 a month can make a difference

Garden Club Gets Ready for Fall Season The September Yard-Of-The-Month award goes to Romi

Sandel at 1057 Martin Romi is active in both the Garden Club and the Civic Club as well as a working professional Good job Romi and thank you for all you do for the neighborhood

The September meeting was held at the home of Carol Jean Hebert Membership was renewed for the 2011-2012 season and a wonderful meal was served Discussions were held about the upcoming Poinsettia Sale a fundraiser held annually by the club for the benefit of the entrance beds and park beds within the neighborhood

The next meeting October 12 will be held at the home of Bob Warren amp Michael Pate at 1131 Thornton New members are encouraged to attend and see if the SPP Garden Club is of interest to you

Plaza Moms Holds Fall Festival Please attend Shopping on the Plaza on October 6 to help Plaza Moms fund their

wonderful events throughout the year It is in the Durham Elementary cafeteria on October 6 from 6 to 9 pm

Our annual Fall Festival is scheduled for Saturday October 29 from 4 to 6 pm This is a great opportunity for the kids to wear their Halloween costumes and come to Shepherd Park for fun activities food and more

Be Aware of Suspicious Vehicles by Chuck Blesener Some of the delivery and service vehicles in our neighborhood everyday are not marked with any company name or other identification Many of these drivers and crews are of questionable character and move freely about our homes and property Most reputable companies have their name and at least their telephone number on their vehicles Many of their drivers and employees have identification

Since we recently had a home burglary where a lawn service crew was questioned and where a suspicious individual in an unmarked truck posing as a handyman was approaching older residents we are taking a closer look at who is in our neighborhood Our Deputy Constable is checking on unmarked work vehicles and questioning anyone appearing suspicious We encourage you to report anyone or any vehicle that is suspicious at a home unexpectedly or at an unusual time We also ask that you suggest to your lawn service or delivery truck or contractor that they put their name and phone number on their vehicle

Your journey starts with the Rainforests of the World on a new walkway overlooking the endangered giant Amazon River otter exhibit before entering the pyramid at the canopy level letting you explore the rainforest from the air and giving you a better opportunity to spot the birds sloths white-faced saki monkeys cotton-top tamarins and other free-roaming tree-dwellers The canopy walkway also includes one of Moody Gardensrsquo most beloved features a walk-in butterfly exhibit that lets you mingle with several species of beautiful butterflies

Garden Club Gets Ready for Fall Season The September Yard-Of-The-Month award goes to Romi

Sandel at 1057 Martin Romi is active in both the Garden Club and the Civic Club as well as a working professional Good job Romi and thank you for all you do for the neighborhood

The September meeting was held at the home of Carol Jean Hebert Membership was renewed for the 2011-2012 season and a wonderful meal was served Discussions were held about the upcoming Poinsettia Sale a fundraiser held annually by the club for the benefit of the entrance beds and park beds within the neighborhood

The next meeting October 12 will be held at the home of Bob Warren amp Michael Pate at 1131 Thornton New members are encouraged to attend and see if the SPP Garden Club is of interest to you

Plaza Moms Holds Fall Festival Please attend Shopping on the Plaza on October 6 to help Plaza Moms fund their

wonderful events throughout the year It is in the Durham Elementary cafeteria on October 6 from 6 to 9 pm

Our annual Fall Festival is scheduled for Saturday October 29 from 4 to 6 pm This is a great opportunity for the kids to wear their Halloween costumes and come to Shepherd Park for fun activities food and more

Please contact Barbara Bryant at barbb84gmailcom for any additional info or if yoursquod like to assist Wersquoll see you at the park to kick off some Halloween fun for the kids There is a $5person fee for non Plaza Moms members or you can join for $35 on the spot

Mens Group To Meet October 13 The Shepherd Park Plaza Mens Group will meet for their monthly luncheon on Thursday October 13 at

1130 am on the back porch at Spaghetti Western 1608 Shepherd Drive The group is open to all men of the neighborhood and has no formal rules officers or dues Just drop in and join the conversation while having lunch at some great local restaurants The group has bus trips planned for October 20 February 5 March 20 and April 27 For more information contact Chuck Blesener at ccbles77gmailcom or 713-683-9945

Gardening Tip of the Month Extend the life of freshly cut flowers by adding 14 teaspoon Clorox regular bleach or 14 cup Arm and Hammer baking soda to 1 quart of water
