What is a food bank?

A food bank is a broad term for an organization

that acquires, stores, and distributes food to

hungry individuals and families in their community.

Food banks receive support from both public and

private initiatives, such as local food drives, um-

brella organizations, local farms and agricultural

programs, food and produce manufacturers and

other types of distributors.

Hunger in Ontario

Urban Areas — Hunger is also increasing in urban communities. Unemployment levels and

cuts to government funded programs are taking their toll. Urban Ontario hunger has

become a major issue that cannot be ignored. With the continued increase in the cost of

food and housing, and the loss of social assistance funding from federal and provincial gov-

ernments, we all need to work together to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.

Blood, Sweat and Tears of Christian Faith The Christian faith brings its

own “blood, sweat and tears” to

those who would follow Jesus

Christ. Christ calls us to

discipleship. When we come to

Him, he takes away our burdens

of sin, guilt, hopelessness, and

our separation from Him.

The Mission verse is found in

Matthew 11:28, but read verse

29. God also calls us to “take

my yoke upon you and learn from

me.” It is not a yoke too heavy

to bear, for Christ bears it with

us: “for my yoke is easy and my

burden is light.” Matthew 11:30.

Christ calls us to follow Him,

regardless of the cost, and

however turbulent the path may

be. Choosing Christ is not to

take away the pain, but to have

Christ’s strength to cope with

that pain and have victory over

it.

Corrie ten Boom said, “the

worst can happen, but the

best remains.”

How beautiful our

Newsletter scripture

becomes in light of these

revelations.

Our volunteer editor of the

newsletter gave us Galatians 6:9

as our spiritual focus for this

issue.

“And let us not grow weary

of doing good, for in due

season we will reap, if we

do not give up”

It couldn’t be more fitting as we

have experienced plenty of

discouragements these past

months. But it is so good to

lean on Scripture like this.

It just keeps us moving forward!

When things seem tough, it’s so

easy to just focus on those

discouragements, but if we stop

and look back a wee bit, there

are plenty of blessings to count

for God’s work at OAM, and I

think you’ll agree when you read

of some of the Newsletter

updates in this issue.

I consider it a blessing during

these times to reflect and call on

God every day for strength,

wisdom and to challenge myself

to be ever faithful.

We have needs...that's for sure,

and God will move His people

to provide.

We have seen profound changes

happen in the Mission ministry

and we struggle with change,

don’t we?

Yet, I wonder about that be-

cause life is all about change.

Our goals change. Our age

changes. Our families change.

Fashion changes. Our whole

world changes, so we might as

well accept that change is part of

life.

The only constant is our founda-

tion on a God and a Faith that

never changes!

“Jesus Christ is the same

yesterday, today and

forever!” Hebrews 13:8

Isn’t that refreshing?

God has been so good to teach

us things and we do commit to

learning and growing in the Lord

and the ministry that He has

called us to.

Every time we help a mission

client in any way, whether it be

at the food bank, store, or

through our program, we “reap”

as the scripture says. When we

help people in our community

with very real discouragements,

it’s rewarding to bring a little

love and hope into their situa-

tion.

I pray that this issue will be an

encouragement to you, the

reader.

May you be blessed in the

updates and may you be chal-

lenged to hear from God, and

may this verse give you a fresh

outlook in difficult times as well.

Mission Centre Management Team

Mission Centre News Tim's Timbits

One recent and very re-

warding interaction with a

client occurred immediately

after our devotional time in

the morning with staff and

volunteers.

I had not had a significant

conversation with this cli-

ent prior to this interac-

tion. It was obvious as we

talked that he had been

listening to our Bible read-

ings and prayer time over

the past number of weeks.

They were beginning to

have an effect on him that

opened his heart to share

some significant issues. We

talked of the hope of

change in his life and the

potential of finding purpose

and meaning.

He asked for prayer. So

I’ve committed to praying

for him. I can’t mention his

name here, but would ask

you to pray for this man

and others like him who

are experiencing God’s

Holy Spirit stirring in their

hearts through what they

are hearing and seeing on a

regular basis at Mission

Centre.

Our clients are at a wide

variety of places spiritually.

I learn a lot from each

one…especially those who

require extra care and

grace!

Some have a strong con-

nection with a local church.

Some have been very hurt

in the church environment

and are wounded and afraid

to enter back in to any spir-

itual conversations. Others

are simply curious about

what makes us tick…why

do we do the things we do?

Others are so entrenched

in a life of addictions and

hurts that they cannot im-

agine anything different.

We’re here to help them

dream about the possibility

that they could be free.

On a personal note, I have

recently transitioned in my

role at Open Arms Mission.

For the past 5 ½ years I

have served in the dual role

of Pastoral Care & Mission

Management.

As of July 1, 2013, I have

moved to a part-time posi-

tion (3 days/week) at Mis-

sion Centre. This will al-

low me to focus more di-

rectly on pastoral care

needs at Mission Centre as

well as to continue as the

Ministry Leader for Cele-

brate Recovery.

I am grateful for the oppor-

tunity to serve in these

areas of ministry that I am

passionate about.

In this redefined role I will

focus on responding to the

spiritual needs of clients,

providing encouragement,

counsel, and direction.

I have been richly blessed

by the opportunities I’ve

had to get to know so

many clients, volunteers,

and community partners.

My kids have teased me and

wondered aloud, “Dad, do

you know everyone in

Welland?” as we drive

along Welland streets and I

name many of the people

we see.

As we move forward, I’m

continuing to pray that God

will help us all to dream in

such a way that His church

may thrive in the world as a

beacon of hope and light.

Running a Charity takes Money

and People! But there is more

to Open Arms Mission than

food distribution.

At Redeemed Goods, we have

both paid and volunteer staff,

receiving, sorting, transporting,

storing, cataloguing, selling,

cleaning and monitoring. At the

Ministry Campus, we are pick-

ing up, receiving, cleaning, sort-

ing, cataloguing, and gardening.

At the Mission Centre, the do-

nated food and hygiene items

need both staff and volunteers

to receive, sort, transport,

store and distribute effectively

but we also provide free coffee

and donuts/muffins each morn-

ing, we provide a listening ear, a

safe haven and counsel many

hurting souls. The office staff

are there to provide answers to

the “Where do I go for…”

questions for our clients. All of

these jobs take both money and

people. Our properties have

repairs, utilities, security and

other overhead bills to pay.

Meanwhile, we are funded sole-

ly on your monetary and item

donations and operate predom-

inantly by our volunteers!

We love items being donated –

bring them to the warehouse at

the Ministry Campus! Can you

give financially? – Great! Con-

tact me if you want to know

your options. Can you volun-

teer just 3 hours a week? –

PLEASE contact us – summer

scheduling is difficult and we

simply need more hands to

help!

In late May to early June, the Clarke-Ventresca Foot

and Orthotic Centres sponsored a sock drive

on our behalf.

Their clients were encouraged to bring in donations of

socks that would benefit our clients.

Through this drive, we received over

200 pairs of socks, which we are now distributing

through our Hygiene room.

The organizers plan to make this an annual event.

“Volunteering...has

taught me not to

grow weary

volunteering

because in due

time my rewards

will be … great.”

Redeemed Goods Blog Submitted by a Volunteer

The word to volunteer was

first introduced during the

1600’s where men would

volunteer for the military.

At that time they were paid

for their services.

In the 19th century,

younger people started

looking around and saw

that some folks were

disadvantaged and decided

to start helping the needy

in their communities. It

was in 1851 that the first

YMCA was created, then 7

years later the YWCA was

formed and women would

volunteer to sew supplies

for the army.

During the 20th and 21st

century, there was an

explosion of organizations.

With the great depression

one of the largest efforts

was put forth with

volunteers organized to

help the needy.

During WWII volunteers

shifted that focus to

providing for the military

and on the home front.

After the war people still

helped out at their local

communities but it started

to become a worldwide

campaign.

Still today volunteering is

considered a selfless act,

which in turn gives the

volunteer a sense of worth

and admiration. Today

when you volunteer, you

are not paid but it can

change you forever. The

feelings you get from

volunteering are sometimes

worth more than a pay

cheque.

Unfortunately volunteering

decreases every year. With

less time and more to do

we are left asking “where

did all the volunteers go”?

In a world of NOW – I am

reminded of the scripture

“And let us not be weary in

well doing: for in due season

we shall reap, if we faint not.”

Galatians 6:9

There is good in helping

out our community, taking

our eyes off ourselves, and

helping out our fellow man.

The above scripture is

about doing something

good - then waiting - and at

the right time GOD will

provide. Whether it’s

something as simple as

helping a customer find a

carrot peeler at Redeemed

Goods, or having the

opportunity to witness to

someone at Redeemed

Lives, or just even offering

a smile to another person

at the Mission Centre; God

can use us to further His

kingdom.

Volunteering at the Mission

Centre and then at

Redeemed Goods has

taught me not to grow

weary volunteering

because in due time my

rewards will be, and have

been great.

Do you want to change

your life?

Call today, and ask how

you can volunteer.

Cutting Costs

P A G E 7 P U L S E

Don’t you just love reading

these Newsletters? They are

so full of stories, inspiration and

information!

Did you know that this newslet-

ter is actually created in full

colour? Many look forward to

the newsletter to read the sto-

ries of God’s victory in people’s

lives, the upcoming events and

reports on other ministry areas.

For us, it is a vital tool for our

communication with all of you.

This is something that is a

regular and essential part of the

work at Open Arms Mission.

Over the years, our recipients

have grown to massive numbers

requiring us to copy in black

and white. (About 700 people

receive our Newsletter quar-

terly)

We have recruited volunteers

that fold the newsletters, stuff

them in envelopes, address and

stamp them. This has been

how we have saved money.

Now, with rising paper, printing

and mailing costs, we are

re-evaluating where we can

save even more money.

We could cut our costs signifi-

cantly if we look to technology.

We could email a notification

that a new Newsletter is availa-

ble, providing a link to the

Open Arms Mission Website

that you would simply click on.

On this website – you can look

at the newsletter in full colour,

and print it out if you so

choose.

Maybe, in the future, we could

make the newsletter interactive

with video links, online registra-

tions and web links. This will

also inspire other reading and

exploring through our website

– maybe you’d even ‘bookmark’

the site as a ‘favourite’.

Currently less than 160 people

visit our website monthly – 70%

of whom are returning visits.

With four Newsletter mailings

and two Appeal mailings each

year, we could save thousands

of dollars if just 50% of you

opted for electronic communi-

cation.

Many of you use email, have

computers and internet –

although, some are not so keen

on it.

If you want to continue receiv-

ing our mailings – DON’T wor-

ry – that option will always be

available. BUT… if you use

email and would like to help cut

our costs, we’d like to ask you

to take a few minutes and send

Anne Visser an email at

[email protected]

In the body of the email simply

give us the following

information:

1. Name or names that

will be represented by

your email address

2. If a couple want to

receive their own email

notifications – please

state the other email

address

3. What types of commu-

nication you desire to

receive by email i.e.

Newsletters, Appeals,

Thank You’s, Event

Notifications etc.

If you want to include other

email addresses on behalf of

your church or outreach/

Celebrate Recovery by Tim Albrecht, Pastoral Care

Pelham Community Church Supporting OAM Ministry Campus Barn Restoration

1st Annual Food Drive A food drive was organized

for June at our farm ware-

house. The shelves are

bare and the need for food

is tremendous.

We targeted the Christian

community, contacting all

the churches on our mailing

list for support. We

arranged for DJ music,

games, BBQ, prizes and fun.

Unfortunately the response

was poor. Two churches

showed up with food and

they won the prizes. Two

private donations were

received later, so it made

for a short event.

We now know, it was a bad

idea to do this in June as

we were faced with a

Triathlon going right past

our location with road

closures. On a positive

note, a number of churches

and individuals made dona-

tions the following week

which was encouraging.

From One Pumpkin

to Another

A woman was asked

by a co-worker,

“What is it like to be

a Chris4an?”

She replied, “It’s like

being a pumpkin.

God picks you from

the patch and brings

you in and washes

all the dirt off you.

Then he cuts off the

top and scoops out

all the yucky stuff.

He removes the

seeds of doubt, hate

and greed.

Then He carves you

a new smiling face

and puts His light

inside to shine for all

the world to see.”

Calling on YOU!

The appeal for financial support can never end.

We have fallen on straining times this first half of the year as the economy continues to affect all of us. We are doing

an amazing ministry in our community but honestly, we need more support. Demand is very high.

Prices are constantly going up. We can’t buy utilities, materials, resources, or help at yesterday’s costs.

Everything goes up!

We are faithful to the Newsletter Scripture choice for this quarterly Newsletter. God will provide and He will do it

through many of YOU! Please consider a love gift this season. As Thanksgiving nears, let’s show how thankful we are

for what we have and be willing to share so others can be thankful too.

The needy continue to come to our door. They come looking for a meal or a food/hygiene bank support. They come

looking for a place to be safe and quiet, share in a coffee and a donut. They come looking for a friend, a listening ear.

They come to our recovery programs looking to change. They participate in service to try and give back.

This is an oasis of Hope.

This is your chance to make a difference and speak Hope into the lives of those we serve. Visits start with connections

that soon turn to relationships which always produce opportunities to share the love of Jesus.

You, as a supporter are a big part of that life changing process.

We thank you for your kindness in the past, and we call on you again to give, so we can give.

We need your help!

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap,

if we do not give up." - Galatians 6:9
