8 Read the text and circle T (true), F (false) or D S (doesn’t say).

Deserts cover about half of the land on the earth, and they are getting larger. As the world gets warmer and there is less water available, there are fewer places for people to live, grow crops and keep animals.

Scientists believe that by 2020 up to 60 million people might move from the Sahara Desert in Africa northwards into North Africa and Europe. People can’t live on the land anymore as nothing grows, so they have to move to new towns and cities.

The problem isn’t just in Africa though. Since 1950, people have moved away from 24,000 villages in north-west China because of desert expansion and it’s getting worse. In India, as the population grows, villagers are moving to new areas as they have no water. At the moment it’s only villages that are disappearing, but scientists believe that soon whole cities will move as there will be no water.

Less water means more deserts. If deserts continue to grow, there will be millions of refugees looking for new places to live. Will the world be able to help?

Deserts cover about half of the land on the earth, and they are getting larger every year.

In India, as the population grows, more and more villagers are moving to new areas as they have no water. At the moment it’s only villages that are disappearing, but scientists believe that soon whole cities, such as Sana’a, the capital city of Yemen, will need to move as it is running out of water.

Less and less water means more deserts. If deserts continue to grow, there will be millions of refugees looking for new places to live. Will the world be able to help?
