In the eyes of many Diocletian's Palace is one of the most magnificent and unique architectural and cultural construct in Europe. If you take a look at the stunningly beautiful Peristyle, the hang out spot for the City's youth, you will notice that it perfectly mirrors the spirit and the character of the City: it is a mixture of living history as well as modern culture.

Our School Logo Bird Peacock from whoes beak lies

hanging a bunch of grapes (a symbol of the eucharist), and under whose feet lies an early Croatian decorative wickerwork. It is a detail taken from a ciborium found in an early Croatin church.

• We chose this motif as a symbol of our school because this ciborium, is in fact a stone canopy above an altar which is supported by four columns, and represents the earliest evidence of Croatian culture, statehood, and faith of the Croatian people.

• This ciborium, as one in a series of pre-Romanesque monuments of early Croatian art which without delay, and abreast with European styles, touch upon the source of artistic expression of Croatian people and attest the unity of our culture and civilization with Europe.

• The school boasts with the Classical Dance Studio. Young ballerinas appeared in many cities in which the school has school partners. In Göppingen, Germany, an reporter in the Göppingenger Zeitung, on May 12, 1997, wrote that «the Croatian group of programs were absolutely enchanting», and that it «it can been seen that schools in Croatia are doing good work».

Classical Languages

• There was a humanist group of poets, artists, scientists and renowned people in the City of Split in the 16th Century. They were in touch with other well-known pepole from European cities such as educators, clerk,s diplomats and travelers visiting Split.

• These people were greatly influenced by the humanist spirit of the Renaissance and they laid the foundation for Croatian culture and science.

• The father of Croatian literature, Marko Marulic, is the most celebrated member of this group. He glorified Split and Croatia in all Europe and the whole cultured world through his theological, poetic and scientific works.

• Living in the City of Marko Marulic and Markantun de Dominis, a great scholar in physics, and particularly in optics, his research won a wide acclaim, and was later praised by Newton. He was Archbishop of Split and Dean of Windsor, who always looked upon western Europe as their a place where they belonged, similar to their own homeland.

• The school naturally has directed towards learning the classical languages, nurturing the importance of the Croatian language and the Croatian heritage.

Language Learning for the European Citizenship

• The school composed an experimental program of Early Language Learning for European Citizenship in 1992.

• The kids from first to fourth grades were taught English every day, divided into smaller groups.

• They had 5 hours of English instruction (of that one four with a native speaker).

• All school subject – except Croatian language – were taught in English.

• When eight graders finished their elementary schooling, they took the First Certificate Test in English by Cambridge University, all passing with flying colors. They achieved CE Level B2 according to A Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (fourth grade high school level of knowledge), unheard for such young elementary school kids in Croatia.

Americana• Students Remember American Tragedy Friday Noon, September 14, 2001 Pujanke Elementary School in Split, Croatia,

joins the rest of the world in a moment of silence to remember the thousands of innocent Americans who were killed in the tragedies that struck the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. These brutal acts of terrorism have left us at a loss for words to express our horror and shock and have taken from us any sense of security that our small country was beginning to feel after the brutal war that afflicted us not long ago. As a sign of respect, our flag is draped with a piece of black fabric, a sign of mourning in our country. May God Bless the victims and their families and all the American people and together, we will somehow try to restore our sense of security and faith in our fellow man.

Americana: Halloween celebration

• The kids learned the origins of Halloween as well as and how it is typically celebrated today.

• The school was decorated with their craft projects and they played such games as Bobbing for Apples, Cake Walk, and Pin the Nose on the Pumpkin. They also participated in a coloring contest and were awarded certificates for their merits.

Americana: THANKSGIVING DAY

• As is customary in the United States, a Thanksgiving Party for tke kids & their parents.

• A cold buffet is prepared with a turkey.

• In conjunction with the mass and assembly, to show our Thanksgiving spirit, a visit the Convalescent Hospital run by the Franciscan Sisters on Dobri, as well as the Home for the Mentally Challenged, run by the Ancelle was organized.

• The school started using the Internet in the classroom in 1994. An article appeared in the American newspapers in 1995.The reporter described the kids were using the “21First Century technology” by exchanging information between the fourth graders from Miller Perry School in the USA and their peers in our school which at that time had only one computer.

E-learning• Teachers, students & their parents use the education platform LMS Moodle every day at school & at home. They utilize the advantages of this system by working at home by doing the specific tasks in a collaborative way, such as debates, forums, chats, quizzes, searching information on the database (EBSCO). A key factor of this new way of learning is the involvement of the parents and their ability to communicate with the teacher and principal of the school, as well as checking their child’s grades or progress.

• Community Education is a philosophy of education and a system for community development.As a philosophical concept, community education transforms the idea of education from a narrow view of schooling to a much broader view of continual lifelong learning.

• Financed by the Forum for Freedom in Education in Zagreb, The City Hall in Split & the Moot Foundation.

• Community centers are places where young & eldery people gather to learn, to enjoy themselves, and also to become involved in community problem solving. It is open to students, families and the community before, during and after school, seven days a week, all year long. It also called the the school of open doors.

The school has been successfully implementing projects run and organized by the Council of Europe, entitled: ‘Europe: from one street to the Other.’ It was monitored by 40 experts from 30 European countries over the last 5 years. The work of our teachers and students was evaluated very high compared with peers in other countries as shown in the book: Il patrimonio culturale a la sua pedagogia per l‘EUROPA.

The school has been successfully implementing the project run and organized by the Council of Europe, entitled: Europe, from one street to the Other. The 222 page thick book will be translated into 8 languages, including Croatian.

• The conclusion of the 5 year study about living peacefully in a multi-cultural Europe was stated by Croatian student Petra who also drew this cathedral. In the times of Diocletian's, this was a Mausoleum where he was Diocletian was buried. Catholics turned the Mausoleum into a cathedral later on.

We have discovered that all nations, peoples, cultures, civilizations and languages are interwoven, and that they all depend and influence each other, and that there is no true life without a mutual understanding. Europe is an amalgam of many countries, cultures, languages and civilizations. The City of Split is a prime example of many changes during its 17th Century existence. You can identify different layers of different cultures from various periods of time.

European Train of FriendshipDestiny maybe wanted students from Pujanke Elementary School to plant the first medlar tree in the newly established European park on the Square of Umberto I. Once upon a time, Puglesi (residents of Puglia) navigated on sailboats to Split and there sold fruit, clothes and attire. That is how originated the district name Pujanke, which is how the Pujanke neighborhood and its elementary school received its name.
