Logging on to HINARI 1

Before logging into PubMed, we can Login to the HINARI website using the URL http://www.who.int/hinari/

Logging into HINARI 2We will need to enter our HINARI User Name and Password in the appropriate boxes, then click on the Login button.

Note: If you do not properly sign on, you will not have access to full text articles.

Remember - if you fail to use the Login page, you will have a second option on the Full text journals, databases, and other resources sub-page.

Main HINARI webpageOnce you are logged in from the main HINARI webpage, access PubMed by clicking on Search

HINARI journal articles through PubMed (Medline).

To access the History option, click on the Advanced Search option.

Note the Advanced Search option that lets you use Limits with other PubMed features. We will discuss the History option.

To build a search using History, begin by putting in your broadest search term. In this example, we will use public health as our main concept.

The result for the public health search is 4.25 million articles. These can be viewed as a search set by clicking on the Advanced Search/History page.

On the History page, our first set is given a set number identified by the # symbol - in this example it is #1. On the right side of the page the number of articles is shown under the Result column. In this case, a total of over 4.25 million citations.

Note that the numbers for your searches may vary depending if you have previously searched that day in PubMed.

We now will search for malaria as a second search term and have 52135 citations. As in the previous result, the malaria search also can be viewed by returning to the Advanced Search/History page.

We now will combine #1 AND #2 to create a combined search for the two terms – public health AND malaria.

Using the Options drop down menu, you also can combine terms by entering your new search term, clicking on a previous # plus the AND option. The current search term and the # chosen will be combined.

The search has narrowed the results down further to 19269 articles. Click on the link to return to the Advanced Search/History page.

Our search #1 AND #2 is now identified as #3.

We now combine the latest search #3 with the geographic term Asia.

The search has narrowed the results down further to 3572 articles. We will return to the Advanced Search/History page.

Set #4 now is public health AND malaria AND Asia.
