Thank you for your support of the award-winning Publix’s Reading for Touchdown program. The main objectives of this literacy program are to encourage your students to read daily and to apply their reading skills to everyday activities (in this case, connected to health and nutrition). The goal of Sun Sentinel NIE and its partners is to organize and administer a 4-week program that is exciting as well as educational for your students.
We designed the program to enrich your current reading program and provide additional, motivating activities for your students without adding any extra burden to you. Our only requests are that you record the weekly tallies of yards, monitor the quality of Book Reports, Sports Maps, and First Down Strategy Activities (which you can apply as extra credit or use in place of other assignments if you choose), and fax in your class tally sheet and survey at the end of the 4 weeks.
The program runs from October 11th – November 5th.Your class tally sheets and program surveys are due by Tuesday, November 16th.
Important: Tally sheets will be available electronically on our website at www.sunsentinel.com/nie. We have included a Head Coach’s Manual (parents’ manual) in the Student Playbook to involve parents in this program. We hope the experience will be positive and beneficial to the whole team - teacher – student – parent!
To assist you in encouraging your students to build quality reading habits, Publix Super Markets, GameWorks, Dave & Busters, and Sun Sentinel NIE are also offering the following fantastic prizes:
GAMEWORKS OR DAVE & BUSTERS ARE SUPPLYING GAMECARDS TO ALL STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE THE PROGRAM!
Top 3 Students (1 per county):• 3 game tickets each to attend a Miami Dolphins football game.
• Their picture in the Sun Sentinel, honoring their achievement as winners of the program!

Dear Teachers (Team Captains),
3
Program elements include:
Team Captain’s Directions
All Class Tally Sheets and Teacher Surveys must be returned by Tuesday, November 16th. Any late submissions will not be eligible for prizes.
Please distribute the Playbooks, go through the activities and prizes with your students, and explain that the Head Coach’s Manual goes home to their parents.
Establish how and when your students will report their total yards earned for reading and completing extra activities for the previous week. You will transfer your students’ weekly tally to your Class Tally Sheet found in this manual or on the NIE website.
Parents are encouraged to confirm their child’s reading at home and to initial completed activities. However, in the event that this is not a possibility, we have also provided a space for your initials.
At the end of the 4 weeks, please collect the Player Stat Sheet from each student, remove the Class Tally Sheet from this booklet (or print from website), tally up the students’ weekly yards, and then tally up all the yards for your class. Fill out the teacher survey (in this booklet or online), and return both the tally sheet and survey by fax, email, or mail:
Fax: (954) 425-1381
Mail: Sun Sentinel NIE Publix’s Reading for Touchdowns 333 SW 12th Ave. Deerfield Beach, FL 33442

• A Playbook for each student in which the number of minutes read per day (Monday through Sunday) for the 4 weeks is recorded. Every 10 minutes of reading at home and school equals 1 yard. Students may read any material, including school work already assigned.
• This Team Captain Manual explains your role as the 4th, 5th, or 6th grade teacher.
• The Head Coach’s Manual, to be sent home to parents/guardians, explains the program and enlists their help encouraging, tracking, and working together with their child at home.

First Down Strategies(Extra Credit Activities)
Strategy #1 – Go to www.mypyramid.gov and select the “interactive tools” section on the left hand navigation bar. Click
on “my pyramid plan” and start developing your own personal eating plan. Once you have developed your menu, use
the Digital Edition of the Sun Sentinel or www.Publix.com to plan out your grocery shopping list. Write a proposal to
your parents explaining why you want to incorporate these foods into your daily diet.
Strategy #2 – Using your shopping list from Strategy #1, pretend you have $100.00 to spend on these groceries. Look
through the Publix ads in your Sun Sentinel to find discounts and coupons for the items on your list. Make a list of all
the food items you can purchase for up to $100.00. Compare with your classmates to see who has the longest list. Stay
within your budget!
Strategy #3 – Compare and contrast – what makes an item “green”? Go to Publix and find an item on your grocery list
that’s “green” and a comparable item that’s not considered green. Read the nutrition labels and compare ingredients,
fats, fiber, calories, vitamins, and any additives. Remember, ingredients are listed from most to least on the label. For
example, in a can of tomato soup, if the first ingredient is water, then tomatoes, celery, salt, etc. – you have a healthier
soup than if your label reads salt first, then water, tomatoes, etc. Write an advertisement for the healthier item and
explain why it is better for you.
Strategy #4 – Write a letter to a company that makes one of your favorite foods. Suggest what they might do to make
their product healthier and how they can advertise this to your peers.
Strategy #5 – Pick a food item that you like to eat. Visit www.nutritiondata.com and enter the name of your item in
the search filed on the top right of the screen. Review the nutrition facts for your selection. List the names of all the
ingredients you can not define, and research to discover what they really are and if they are nutritious or not.
Strategy #6 – Based on your knowledge of healthy foods, go through the aisles of your local neighborhood Publix and
create a menu to sustain a football player. After you prepare your menu, write a letter to your favorite football player
explaining why this might be something for him to consider.
Strategy #7 – Create your own comic strip using Plato the Publixaurus or your own original mascot as the main character.
Make sure your comic strip has a beginning, middle, and end and tells a story. Check out the top of this page if you want
to see what Plato looks like.
Strategy #8 – Create a short video about why it is important to stay fit by playing football or other sports and
eating nutritious foods. Explain to your audience how they can plan their menu. Read the ads in the Sun Sentinel,
and find everything they will need for staying fit. NOTE: If you would like your video to possibly be posted on
www.SunSentinel.com/nie email it to [email protected] or mail it to Sun Sentinel NIE, Attn: Debbie Rahamim,
333 SW 12th Ave, Deerfield Beach, Fl 33442.
6
Strategy #9 – Creativity is a key to a successful football player. Create your own First Down Strategy(ies), get your Team
Captain (teacher) to approve, and earn extra yards. If your strategy is adopted by other members of the team, give
yourself an extra yard for each person successfully using it.
Strategy #10 – Football (or soccer) is played all over the world. However, the version played in the United States
(American Football) is different. Research to discover why we call the game soccer, and then develop a T-chart or Venn
diagram comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between the two games.
Strategy #11 – A football field is 100 yards long. Measure out 100 yards in your backyard or an empty football field. With
a friend or friends, toss the football from one end of the field to the other to see how many throws it takes each one of
you to reach 100 yards. Make a tally chart recording all the tosses and then create a bar graph of the results.
Strategy #12 – A football is a prolate spheroid and a soccer ball is a sphere. Make an educated guess as to which one will
travel further when kicked. Kick each ball and measure the distance from where you started to where the ball landed.
Do this 5 times and record the distances for both each time. Use your data to and then do some research to answer
the questions below.
Did the same ball travel the farthest each time? Why or why not?
Which ball was easier to kick? Why do you think this was so?
Was your hypothesis correct? Explain why you made your hypothesis and why it was correct or incorrect. What
suggestions would you make to the ball manufacturer(s) to improve the shape(s) of the ball(s) so that you would get
the most distance for your kick? Make a drawing of your “perfect” kicking ball shape and send it to a manufacturer with
you suggestions, data, and reasons.
