October 21, 2015 Dear Friends in Christ at Bethany, When an extended family decides to celebrate a special occasion . . . a momentous occasion . . . do they plan events that exclude some of the family members that can’t afford to attend, or do they plan events in which all can joyfully participate? A family that cares about, appreciates, and cherishes all its members does whatever it can to include everyone. There are families that are blood related, and then there are communities that choose to call themselves families because of their mutual devotion to a cause and each other. Such a family is the Bethany UCC Church. We are all aware that a significant milestone is being celebrated, the 125th Anniversary of our congregation. We are also aware that we are in a precarious financial situation right now, but nevertheless the celebration must and will take place. We will lift up the past history of Bethany UCC in joyous fashion, conserving funds while doing it. Frugality does not mean having less, but involves creativity in generating more. So …fund raising dinners and expensive banquets will be replaced with Bethany’s fabulous, notable covered dish dinners. Monthly entertainment will be sponsored by our various committees and church organizations…everything with inclusiveness and fun on the agenda! There might be times when free will offerings may not reflect sufficient funding for an event and here is where you can help if you desire. Personal monetary sponsorships of any “outside” entertainment group would be gratefully appreciated. Just contact any committee person with your interest. We all have heard the phrase “The best things in life are free.” Nothing is better for the future of a church than having its membership enjoying fellowship, sharing food, worshipping together, and spreading the good news throughout our community by welcoming all to our celebration. Please plan on attending all of the special events that will be coming to you throughout the course of the year. Invite your family and friends to come along.

Come with enthusiasm and a joyful heart. We are Bethany Church . . . let’s celebrate!!! Faithfully, 125th Anniversary Committee Bethany has been a place to come together, to learn, to exchange ideas, to grow, to celebrate, to comfort. It is a place that has transformed lives and strengthened relationships. Help us celebrate the 125th Anniversary by participating in the many exciting events planned during the next year. There’s something for everyone – Plan to join us and BRING A FRIEND!

From the 125th Anniversary Committee:

Anniversary Sunday - We hope you didn't miss Anniversary

Sunday on May 22nd. The Sunday School children walked from

the original site of Bethany at 4th Ave. and Schaeffer St. to our

beautifully landscaped (thanks to John Albaugh) present location.

The parade was complete with our 125th anniversary banner, bells,

bubbles, balloons, and smiles. The worship service was led by Rev.

Alan Miller our PNEC minister. The service was both spiritual and

entertaining. Several representatives of the local, state, and federal

government were present. Proclamations were also received from

U. S. Senators Robert Casey and Pat Toomey. Special music was

presented in recognition of this special occasion. The lyrics to the

final hymn were written by Bethany's own creative Carol Kreitz.

Everyone enjoyed a time of fun

and fellowship after worship.

Thanks to all who prepared for,

participated in, and who

attended this joyous celebration.

God has blessed us with our

Bethany family for 125 years!

Let us pray that He will continue to bless us for another 125 or

more years.

"THE BIG B & E EVENT" BEGINNINGS and ENDINGS...

Bingo first and Eat later REMEMBER WHEN, years ago, the Chancel Choir performed "It's Cool in the Furnace" and we finished the evening with a judged baking contest??? Well....., this anniversary year we want YOU to be the entertainment by participating in a "BINGO" afternoon with free playing cards and with "amazing" prizes!!! What else do you need to do you ask??? Just come and bring with you your famous, fantastically fabulous appetizer or dessert that you would like to have judged by our distinguished panel of Bethany food experts (mostly average guys who like to eat dessert) and YOU could be our GRAND PRIZE WINNER!!!!! The fame NEVER leaves you- even today it is remembered that SUE STRALO's "ORANGECICLE CAKE" was the top prize/FIRST PLACE WINNER. See how famous you will become? Your name gets all capitals in a Beeline article. We on the committee ask that you name/label your appetizer or dessert. Also, please come with some recipe cards for that appetizer or dessert to share with others unless it's some generational family secret. (We do need to be aware of any "allergy" ingredients.) The date for this wonderful event is SATURDAY JUNE 11th 3 - 5 PM in Fellowship Hall.

to be a judge, put you name on the sign-up sheet.

Steel Drum Band

a variety of music on steel drums. This will be a community event

which will hopefully be held outside from 6 to 8 PM. Food and

beverages (hotdogs, water, soda, and baked goods) will be for sale

in the kitchen beginning at 5:30.

Homecoming Sunday - September 25, 2016

members of Bethany to join us for a very special service at 10:45

followed by a covered dish luncheon. The Rev. Bill Seaman will

lead worship.

We hope to have great attendance for this event. We are looking

forward to celebrating with people old and new. Please provide us

with addresses and/or email addresses for anyone who experienced

nephews of current members. Please give the contact information

to Sharon Haines or Leslie Thrash.

Look for a sign-up sheet for the covered dish luncheon beginning

in August. We would like an RSVP from all attendees by

September 1st so that we have an accurate count and can plan for a

terrific celebration.

125th Anniversary Dinner Banquet

We are pleased to announce that the Rev.

Denise Esslinger will be preaching on Oct.

9, 2016. She and her husband Phil will be

joining us at the dinner banquet at The

Barnhouse Village. This will be a family

style dinner from 1:30 to 5:30 PM. Dick

Roberts will lead us in entertainment.

1 through 10. Please RSVP and make payment no later than

September 1st. Checks made payable to Bethany United Church of

Christ are preferred. Sharon Haines will accept and record payment

prior to handing your check to Tom Hoffert.

The next meeting for the 125th Anniversary of Bethany Planning committee is Tuesday, July 12 at 6 p.m. in the study. Bethany 125th archive info: The archive info on display in the study during the summer will focus

on the years 1962 to 1978. During this time Reverend Charles Lamar Derk served Bethany from 1962-1976, we were large enough to have an assistant Pastor James Fridman who served Bethany approximately a year in 1967, and Reverend Theodore Jentsch, served as our interim Pastor from 1976 to 1978.

Unfortunately in planning for our 125 th Anniversary, with plans to invite each of these men to help us celebrate or lead us in worship, they have all passed away somewhat recently. Pastor Fridman in

Page 9: Published ten times a year by BETHANY UNITED CHURCH OF ... · July 24 Rev. John Kunkel July 31 VBS Sunday w/Patti Hoyt August 7 Rev. Faith Williams August 14 Rev. Faith Williams August

9

2009, and Pastor Jentsch in 2015 and Pastor Derk in 2016. Significant happenings at Bethany while Pastor Derk was serving

include the gift of WhiteChapel Bells from the Rodenbach family, new hymnals were purchased specifically UCC, which replaced the long

used Evangelical and Reformed Hymnals, the Senior bell choir was organized and lots of building renovations took place. The Women's movement was felt as Ethel Moll and Miriam Schaeffer became the first women to serve on Consistory. What a change that must have been. Bethany became more socially aware and mission oriented as The Women's Guild sponsored Cuban Refugees, Jose and Hortensia Morales, providing them with a home

and employment in the 60's and the congregation took on the mission in the 70's of sponsoring Vietnamese Refugees, securing them clothes, housing and employment. Last but certainly not least, Bethany entered into its longest lasting

relationship by hiring our very talented Susan Wright, then Denninger as all things musical took off. She is a blessing to Bethany and

excellent at showcasing the talent within the Bethany Congregation. Happy 125th Bethany UCC, Sharon Haines

The Bethany archives are missing quite a few pictures from the confirmation classes. If you or your child were confirmed at Bethany in 1948, 1955, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1970, 1976, 1990, 1997-2001, 2004, 2009, 2011-2014 and have a picture of it please consider making a copy of it and donating it to the Bethany Archives.

Thanks, Sharon Haines

This is an exciting time in the life of Bethany and its ministry. Please plan to join us – everyone is welcome.

Our rummage sale will be Friday June 17th and Saturday June 18th from 9am to 2pm. Tell your friends and family. We are in need of homemade soup, baked goods and people to help set up, tear down, work the event and help in the

kitchen.

Please see Darlene or Sharon if you are able to help in any way.

CHURCH WIDE MISSION PROJECT:

In the fall the Sunday School children will be making Blessing

Bags as part of a mission project. The purpose of the Blessing

Bags is to give homeless individuals items in a bag which may

come in handy for them and let them

know we care and are thinking about

them. Some non-perishable items may be

purchased over the summer while you are

doing your own shopping at the dollar

store. Items that can be purchased for this mission include: Gallon

size storage bags, gloves, thermal socks, beef sticks, candy bars,

toothpaste, toothbrushes, small packs of wipes, deodorant,

wrapped snacks, gum, mints, small bagged chips or crackers. We

also plan to put in small inspirational pamphlets or cards. The goal

is to make and distribute 125 bags to celebrate our anniversary. We

would like to have these bags ready for distribution by the first

week of December when the Bethlehem Emergency Shelters are

open. Please check on expiration dates, since they will not be

distributed until December. The snack and food items will need to

be purchased closer to December. Faith Formation has had a very good year. I cannot believe the year is coming to an end. Time really went fast. Our last day of Sunday school

is June 5 and the children will talk all about Jesus from birth thru Easter. We will also confirm 2 of our youth. Those who are getting confirmed are Ashley Tarasuk and Bryan Roberts. They were under the instruction of Patti Hoyt and Brian Ziegler. There will be a cake reception after the church service. I would like to Thank all the teachers and helpers that were so very faithful though out the year. The teachers are:

Those who missed 2 days: Nathaniel Sullivan & Abby Sullivan Those who missed 3 days: Tobias Scott & Alina Scott Many thanks to all the parents who brought their children to Sunday school. These days will always remain in their minds as they grow up. Many thanks to all. Sincerely Darlene Y Director of Faith Formation NEW CLASSES Coming in the fall I would like to add 2 new classes for our children to attend. I would like to add a class for the lower elementary 1 - 3 grade and a teenage group (for those after confirmation). Requirements - love children and child abuse clearance.

Page 12: Published ten times a year by BETHANY UNITED CHURCH OF ... · July 24 Rev. John Kunkel July 31 VBS Sunday w/Patti Hoyt August 7 Rev. Faith Williams August 14 Rev. Faith Williams August

Child Abuse clearances are very easy to obtain. Think about this and pray about it. You will always remain in this child's heart. An example of this is at our 125th Anniversary celebration in May Steve Samuelson came into the coffee hour and we were talking. I was his 5th & 6th Grade Sunday school teacher and he remembered it. His father was the pastor of the church at that time. Now he is teaching Sunday school in his church. Thanks Darlene Y Director of Faith Formation

ATTENTION TEENAGERS: Don't forget Community Service is given to the high school children. Some school districts give community service for work in the church. Bethany is certified as one of the places you can earn your credits. See Darlene Y.

Sunday school reopens September 18 with Rally Day.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SCRIP CARDS! Use the cards when you shop or give them as gifts! It’s soooo easy. If you use Scrip Cards for your everyday items – gas, prescriptions, food, restaurants etc. the amount Bethany receives mounts up fast. You can also purchase large items – appliances, home improvements and rugs. Use them for gifts – to buy a gift you are going to give and as the gift itself. These cards can be

purchased on a Sunday morning from Judy Morgan. Give the cards a try. It just takes a little planning ahead. Thank you. There are always things - big and small - that need to be done around Bethany. When you notice something, please take it upon yourself to tend to it or contact someone who can address the need.

To my friends at Bethany Church:

How fortunate and blessed am I to have

not only a loving and supportive husband

but to have so many friends at Bethany

who remembered me with prayers, cards

and telephone calls during my longer-than-

expected recovery from hip surgery.

Thank you all for taking time to brighten up my days of

recuperation with words of cheer and encouragement. God Bless

each of you for your caring and concern!

Rebecca Kesselring

Dear Friends, Thank you for your prayers, cards, visits, and flowers during my hospital and rehabilitation stays. The beautiful prayer shawl knitted by Marion Hendricks brings me great comfort. Sincerely,
