They were probably from Clarian County, Pennsylvania.

3-70. Luelma White, Route 1 Box 16, Geneseo KS 67444 is looking for information on JOHN CHAPMAN and Martha HILDRETH Chapman, hi. wife, who re~ided in Franklin Co. Indiana in 1827. They had one son Marvin born October 21 1827 in Franklin Co. Indiana. It is believed that Marvin's father, John, died there. Marvin and his mother later moved to Le~ Co. Iowa. Marvin Chapman had a son William 1860 HO whose daughter, Irene 1899 KS, was the mother of Mrs. Whites husband.

Need information regarding the parent. of HENRV CHAPMAN, born in Vermont in June 1816 (not in 1822 as shown in the last edition). He died in 1902 in Monmouth County, New Jer ••y. He and his wife, Hannah Ann LAMSON, are buried at Cedar Run, New Jersey. Does anybody have any information on the Vermont Chapmans7

His fourth great grandmother, Mary Chapman, was married to John APPLEWHITE. Her father was JOSEPH CHAPMAN of Isle of Wight County, Virginia. He died in 1729, Isle of Wight County, Virginia. His wife's name was Alice (maiden name unknown). He would like to hear from anyone regarding the Isle of Wight Chapmans.

Both of her folks were born in Virginia also. She was married to Joel HORN between 18~4-55. This couple had 5 children, although he was a widower with 5 children with his first wife, Mary A. from Tennessee. Joel and Melvina's first child was Elbert Severe Horn. Joel Horn died in 1873, but we found Melvina on the 1900 Census of Washington Co. Virginia

His wife's great grandmother was Sarah Ann 1867 dlo Enoch Chapman 1839 IN, 5/0 George Chapman. BEORGE CHAPMAN who married Elizabeth Marley, and who apparently spent most of his life in Lawrence Co. Indiana, seems to be the end of their line. Let them hear from you.

NY 1800, sonsl Hiram who settled Schuyler Co. NY died 1863; Levi who died 1881 Tompkins Co. NY. Also would like information on parents of 18RAEL CHAPMAN born June 7 1761 and lived in Saratoga Co. NY bef are 1790.

3-77. Hick! Crozier, Route 2 Box 130, Sedgwick KS 67135 needs information on her 2nd Great Grandmother SUSAN FRANCES CHAPMAN and ELLIS CHAPMAN who was probably her father. Micki says it is known that Susan was born July 3 1831 in Ohio and married Rufus Wil~on PARKS June 12 1851 at Decatur Illinois. She died September 25 1895 at Hutchinson, Reno, Kansas, and is buried at Pleasant Valley Cemetery near Bentley Kansas. Hicki says family tradition makes Susan the daughter of Ellis Chapman and Sarah Warren. Sibling~ are Eliza A. born about 1826 and married James M. HARTIN, Elizabeth who married a MCMASTERS, and lived Fayette County, Ohio, John had sons Charlie ~ Warren and lived Chillicothe Ohio, Jefferson lived Frankfort Ohio, and William Henry Harrison who married Mary ROSS.

Dee says, All that I know is HENRV CHAPMAN and Addie DUNPHY or DURPHY were listed as being born in Ireland on the 1900 census of their son Ulyse~s David. The marriage certificate of Ulyse~s David gave the names of his parents, Henry and Addie. They were in Cedar Co. Iowa in 1867. I would appreciate any information on them.

It will list eAch direct ChApman ancestor of every ChAppie.' Unlike the lineAge table published in the first issue,this file permits much more informAtion And it can be sequenced And sorted on Any of the fields. This file will contAin the family reference and the "Wanted List" datA mentioned in the previous issue. In MAy we will hAve our 1984 CHRPHRH RHHURL AVAilAble for those of you who are interested. It will contAin the nAme and Address of All the ChAppies. There will be An alphabetical sequence AS well AS one by code (used AS reference in the DAtA bank And the Family Reference file). It will Also include two printouts of the FAmily Reference File. One will be by ChAppie listinQ their ChApmAn ancestors in numbericAl sequence by pediQree number. The other, which should prove most helpful, will be An AlphAbeticAl arrAnQement of the ancestors permittinQ you to see immediately those who share An Ancestor with you. We will Announce the price And aVAilability date in the next is.ue.

NEED YOUR HELP

We despArately need your help. We Are not about to rAise our subscription fee, at least not until after 19815 unless there is a drastic increase in printing or postal cbsts. We are not askinQ for" any finAncial assistance, but we will provide you a brief financial report in the next issue. The help we need is in expansion. OUr' present circulation is justminimuAl and not nearly enough to make our effort worthwhile. Almost half of our costs are fixed, so we can add new

subscribers with very little additional expense. If we could double our circulation we would probably be at just about the break even point. The help you could give is by enlistinQ one .ubscriber. Certainly you know sOllleone who is interested in our Chapman family history. Tell them about us. EncouraQe them to subscribe. We will do everything possible to make them glad that they became a part of our group. If you have any' ideas as to how we might increase our 'readership, please pass them on to us. The chart on pAQe6 has a few slight formAt revisions. In our other newsletters there was a suggestion by a few that we discontinue the charts. There were more who wanted them continued and they had suggestions for some expansion and improvement. You will see that we are now providing data on the state And county of the births, marriages and deaths. If data i. not Available we are leAvinQspace for you to Add it later if you should have occasion to do so. We are also mAking an Attempt to minimize the reduction of eAch chart .0 the printing will not be so small. If you mAke Additions or see need for chanQes, please tell us about them so we CAn update our computer record.

This newsletter is prepared for you and the Chappies of the future. It i. prepared about you and the ChAppies of the past. We have no monopoly on ideas as to what ought or oUQht not be included in the pUblication. We wAnt to heAr from you when we include something 'you think is not needed or you do not like.. Of course, we also would like to hear from you About the thinQs you do like. Most of All we would like your idea. of thing. thAt could be Added, features that would not dupliCAte information in those presently being printed, and thAt would appeal to a broad rAnQe of our readers.

DO WE HAVE YOUR CHAPI'1AN DATA?

We have finally settled on the computer hardware and softWAre system we will be using for our operations. We are now making siQnificAnt progress in recordinQ the data. If you have not sent us your pedigree chart And All your family group records, it won't Qet into what we expect to soon be the nations 1ArQest collection of Chapman genealoQical information. It would be to your advantage, as well as a help to the present and future Chappies for us to have your information so that it can be assimilated with the other information we have and be made available to people around the country.

CHAPMAN DATA BANK

This months data bank begins on the facing page, and continues almost to the end of the newsletter. Our "C-file" was so large that we had to cut it into two segments so as not to use the entire newsletter for the data bank. The balance of the "C-file" which is from "Charlotte" to the end will be in the next issue.

This is basically the same format as we used in the last issue. There are a couple of minor changes or improvements that we will mention, but first let us remind you what is in each record. Lets use the record of "Charlie Lee Chapman" which is on page 23 for an example. None of the records are 100% complete, but this one is close to it.

The first line of each record, the three line print format, pertains to our Chapman. After their name is the date and place of birth and death then the name of the cemetery and finally the place of burial.

The second line of each record pertain. to the spouse of the Chapman. There will be separate records for each spouse and the marriage, if there was more thAn one, will be numbered just before the name of the spouse. Notice that Charlie Lee was married twice, .0 he has a record for each spouse. Following the name of the spouse is the date and place of their birth and death but instead of cemetery and burial place, this line shows the date and place of marriage on the right.

The third line has an assortment of information. It begins with the c/o which means "child of" and shows the parents of the person listed on the first line of the record. At the right side of this third line is a reference to our source. This has been modified a little to use two fields or sets of spaces. The first which is always a number followed by a "B" is the book code from which we took the entry. If there is a "B" entry then it is followed by the page numb~. If there is no "B" entry, then the code tells us, and you when you understand our reference codes, from Whom we received the information. The addition in this issue involves an entry that is sgmetimes used between the parents and the reference. Look at Charlie Patton Chapman who is also on page 23. You will see an "R" followed by a gap and then a "VA MECK". We have provided the capability to show in this area any other event (other than birth, death and marriage which is on line 1 or 2) on which we have information. This R means that Charlie Resided in Mecklenburg County, Virginia. If we have a date it will be entered in the space between the "R" and the location. Other code. used in the issue for thi s othe.r event are "M" for mi 1i tary servi ce, "CD for census (we will be changing this to "E" later so we can use "C" for christening/baptized).

Remember that the names are arranged alphabetically based on the first name, middle initial or middle name if there is one. Dates are expressed year month and day and locations are state and county (or city/town in some cases) •

We provided the book codes in the last issue, but have added a new one. Code BB is

for FRO~ CULPEPER COUNTY TO THE TE~YS V~LLEY written by Mildred Chapman Gibbs.

We have tried to leave you ample room on these pages to write in new information when you make. a genealogical discovery. We would ask that you periodically make a quick copy of the pages with changes and send it to us so we can update the computer record.

We have reviewed this file several times from different points of view (based on data in the different fields) in an effort to make it as accurate as possible and to minimize duplication. After making our final manuscript print, but before going to the printer we found a couple of errors we missed. You tell us about others as you see them.

On page 9 on the top or right half of the page, depending on how you are looking at it, is an entry for Caleb born 17061006 in Middlesex County. The entry showing the parents to be Nathaniel and Mary Collins is incorrect. Mary Collins was the first wife of Nathaniel but was not Caleb's mother. Caleb'. mother was Hannah Bates. We failed to enter Caleb'. second wife who was Abigail Lee whom he married January 11 1749. He married a third time to Mrs. Hannah Platts who died May 4 1794.

A duplication that we failed to eliminate is Charles E. or Charles Edward on pages 19 and 20. The Charles E born IB~4 on page 19 is the same as the Charles Edward born IB~41130 on page 20. Please mark out the entry on page 19 and revise the entry for the parent. on the latter to show William ~~.

There are a couple of cases where we think we have a duplication, along with a slight contradiction of information, but we are not sure. We would appreciate any information you have to prove or refute any of this information.

On page 1~, left or bottom half, there are two entries showing a Catharine marrying a Charles Jordan. In addition to identical first names, the year and month of marriage are the same. The differences are in the day of marriage and the states in which they were married. We feel that one of the record. represents an error on the part of "Hunting for Bears, Inc" the source of our marriage lists, but we don't know which one to accept.

On page Ib, top or right half, we have a similar situation. Notice the entries where Celia marries William Calhoun. Both show a connection with Clark County, Alabama. The months of marriage are the same but the years are one off. We can accept different day., based on one being the date the license or certificate was issued, and the other being the date of the actual ceremony. These came from separate sources, one from "Hunting for Bears, Inc" and the other from Dr. Je••e Chapman's book. He got his information from another family publication. Who knows something about this one?

What can you add to this file? We need additions, corrections, and bits and pieces to fill in the holes. We depend very much on you as a source of information. Thank. for all that you have sent thus far.
