TRIATHLON HELPING CAREFLIGHT DELIVER

Jabiru is a frequent destination for CareFlight aircraft and helicopters transferring ill and injured patients to specialist treatment in Darwin.

CareFlight will be the recipients of all funds raised in the upcoming Kakadu Triathlon.

On Wednesday 7 May CareFlight was called to transfer three patients under medical treatment from the Jabiru Health Clinic. One man was flown on the CareFlight TiO rescue Helicopter and two in a later flight on a CareFlight Kingair aircraft.

One patient, a 23-year-old woman, was initially left unconscious when she fell and hit her head while riding a skateboard in the town at about 4pm.

She was taken to Jabiru Health Clinic by the clinic ambulance and treated until CareFlight flew her to royal Darwin Hospital for neurological assessment due to the nature of her head injury.

Founding director ian badham said CareFlight sincerely appreciated the support of so many people in Jabiru actively involved in the staging this year’s Kakadu Triathlon on Saturday 31 May.

“it’s a very well-organised event that not only brings the town together but also supports the work of our aeromedical charity,” he said.

uNiQuE cultural designs from West arnhem hit the big time recently when babbarra Designs of Maningrida was invited to australian indigenous Fashion Week 2014.

ONE of the Northern Territory’s pristine parks has just celebrated 40 years of protection under the ramsar Convention.

in 1974 the Cobourg Peninsula was designated the world’s first Wetland of international importance under the ramsar Convention.

Minister for Parks and Wildlife bess Price said the ramsar listing had assisted in keeping the area in immaculate condition.

“it is a credit to this beautiful area that it was the first site in the world to be signed to the treaty,” Mrs Price said.

“The park has an abundance of amazing wildlife, and is the place on the australian mainland that Leatherback Turtle’s nest.”

The ramsar Convention is an intergovernmental treaty

that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and use of wetlands and their resources.

The Cobourg Peninsula, also known as Garig Gunak barlu National Park, is jointly managed by the arrarrkbi people and NT Parks and Wildlife.

The protected area includes the entire Coburg Peninsula, the surrounding waters of the arafura Sea and Van Diemen Gulf, and some of the neighbouring islands and covers about 4500 square kilometres.

ParK rangers have begun their annual fire management activities for the dry season.

Drivers may encounter smoke while travelling on major roads within Kakadu National Park.

rangers are asking motorists to drive with care and observe any safety signage at this time, and be on the lookout for wildlife near roads.

HOrNETS will fly across Top End skies this month during the air Force’s annual bombing camp, Exercise arnhem Thunder.

up to 12 F/a-18a Hornets from raaF Williamtown, NSW arrived at raaF Tindal last Monday for air-to-surface combat weapons training.

The three-week exercise will run until 23 May, with both squadrons employing weapons at Delamere Weapons range and bradshaw Field Training area. arnhem Thunder will see the Hornet pilots employ dry, inert and high explosives as they practice two and four-ship attacks, as well as self-escort strike missions.

a spokesperson said the air Force was committed to ensuring a “noise conscious approach”.

“Every effort is made to minimise any inconvenience to residents and the ongoing support from the local communities is appreciated.”

FOur travellers have suffered a harrowing ordeal clinging to the outside of their vehicle

after it was swept off Cahill’s Crossing in the middle of the night.

The crossing is notorious for two things: getting drivers into trouble, and crocodiles.

Cahill’s is open to high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, but water levels remain high and fast-moving.

in the early hours of Tuesday, april 29, four people spent six hours perched on the outside of a Nissan 4WD after it was washed off the crossing and up against rocks, where it came to rest at a precarious angle.

Travelling in the vehicle were Jules borell, his brother Nick and his eight-month pregnant girlfriend Patrena, and her five-year-old son Dwayne.

The vehicle was carrying 50kg of turtle meat from Goulburn island when it was flooded with water and trapped at the crossing.

in an interview with the NT News, Jules said “i can’t believe one of us was not taken”.

The four had stopped at the crossing to sleep and wait for the waters to recede.

but when Jules was woken at 1.30am by water rushing in through the windows, he realised his brother had become impatient and decided to have a go at the crossing.

“it was pitch black, we couldn’t see if there any (crocs) around,” Jules said.

“We put our feet on the (4WD’s steps) and tried to wade out but the current was too strong and kept pushing us back ... we didn’t know how long

it was going to be before anyone came to help.”

Just before sunrise, the group managed to wade to safety. but the early morning light revealed two crocodiles, of around 3.5m and 4m in length, on a nearby bank and a 5m monster swimming through the very spot in the river from which they had just escaped.

Jules said he hoped their ordeal would serve as “a warning to others”.

The $40,000 vehicle was still at the crossing on Saturday 3 May and appeared to be a write-off.

On Thursday 8 May, Kakadu Park rangers reported the crossing had been opened to high clearance 4WD vehicles only.

Officer-in-Charge at Oenpelli Police Station, Sergeant Nathan Cornelius, urged drivers to exercise caution.

“if the gates are opened, please remember the effect the force of the water may have on your vehicle,” Sgt Cornelius said.

A MINE OF INFORMATION

Three serving soldiers were amongst the attendees at the Anzac Day Dawn Service in Warruwi.

LOCaLS and visitors to Kakadu are invited to a community information day on the ranger Mine operations to be held on Thursday 22 May.

ENErGY resources of australia (Era) is holding the information day, which will include a sausage sizzle, outside the Era Community Office in Jabiru plaza from 9am to 3pm.

Era Chief Executive andrea Sutton says Era believes it is important to listen to the community and talk openly about ranger mine operations and major projects.

“i encourage the local community and visitors to attend the community information day,” she said.

Operations Tim Eckersley said: “The community information day will be an opportunity for employee family members, locals and visitors to the area to learn about Era’s operations and major projects.

“Friendly staff from ranger mine will be on hand to answer questions about

initiatives at the mine.”

There will be tours to ranger mine departing at 9.30am, 11.30am and 1.30pm.

MaNiNGriDa and Warruwi joined with Jabiru and other West arnhem communities in commemorating anzac Day recently.

across the region, school children joined with community members, ex-servicemen, police and emergency services personnel to honour the legacy of our Diggers.

in Warruwi, the West arnhem regional Council (WarC) joined with the local church to hold a Dawn Service followed by a breakfast at the Home and Community Care (HaCC) building.

WarC Community Service Manager Kupa Teao said around 30 people attended.

“There was a mixture of balanda and indigenous, young and old, and we also had three of the locals, in army uniforms, who are currently serving,” Mr Teao said.

in Maningrida, three ex-servicemen and around 100 indigenous and non-indigenous people attended a ceremony at 6.50am on Friday 25 april at the barge landing.

Councillor Dene Herreen and Community Service Manager Terrence bragg attended on behalf of West arnhem regional Council.

adam Cornell, who served in Timor, gave the welcoming speech and commemorative address. Mr Cornell also read an excerpt from the diary of a Digger who served at Gallipoli and later on the Western Front in France.

School children laid wreaths, and a police contingent from Maningrida raised the australian and Northern Territory flags. The honour of raising the aboriginal flag went to Corporal James Wood of Norforce.

Mr bragg, who saw active service in South Vietnam from 1970-1971 with 106 Field Workshop, said he found the service “emotional and satisfying”.

“it was pleasing to see the number of children who attended the service,” Mr bragg said.

“Singing of the australian national anthem was led by Matt and Nat, with the crowd joining in. This was followed by a rendition of the New Zealand national anthem, as the Kiwis are the other part of aNZaC.”

Mr bragg thanked adam Cornell for a “good job” on the speech and NT Fire and rescue Services Maningrida for cooking the breakfast, provided by the council, as well as help in organising the service.

“i must also express a thank you to Jamie Cutler and his indigenous work crew for the effort that they put into cleaning the area where the commemorations were held and erecting the flag poles,” he said.

“Last but not least a special word of thanks must go to Honest ron Gray for his efforts in helping to organise this year’s remembrance, and that of previous years.”

GuNbaLaNYa showed off its ‘surfing’ prowess in Darwin recently, when a group of youngsters got together to

help promote Youth Homelessness Matters Day as part of National Youth Week.

Six youth joined two staff from the West arnhem regional Council (WarC) Youth, Sport and recreation team to take part in two events during the week — a couch surfing race, and the ‘My Life Through a Lens’ event, with photos on display at Happy Yes and brown’s Mart.

The Gunbalanya boys entered the couch surfing race, which has been held every year for the past three years, through a partnership between WarC and anglicare.

Each of the 10 competing teams had to design and paint a couch on wheels before racing down Darwin’s Smith Street.

The Gunbalanya boys won the event with flying colours — flying, in fact, the colours of the aboriginal flag.

The team was a hit with the Territory media including abC News and the NT News. One member of the winning team, Dylan Cooper, told The Wire it was the first time a remote aboriginal community had been involved in the event.

The Gunbalanya team on its way to winning the Couch Surfing race, held annually on Darwin’s streets to promote awareness of youth homelessness.

“it was a good experience, making new friends and meeting new people,” Dylan said.

“Talking to the media was something new – back home we don’t do that.

“it was a little bit ‘shame’ but we had to do it – it helped to get the message out about youth homelessness.”

He said it was all too easy for kids from the bush to find themselves homeless in Darwin.

“Sometimes someone can go to Darwin to visit relatives and find there are too many people in the house,” he said.

“So they get stranded on the street where they can get in trouble and get caught up in the justice system.”

Dylan said the Gunbalanya boys had spent Tuesday shopping for paints and also bought brightly coloured new shoes for the team.

“We only had about 15 to 20 minutes to design and paint the couch at the anglicare office, so the boys just decided to paint it like the aboriginal flag,” he said.

“Winning the event felt good, especially being the only remote community competing.”

Youth Homelessness Matters Day is a community education campaign supported by the National Youth Coalition for Housing (NYCH).

NYCH was formed to end youth homelessness and create youth housing solutions.

SEVEN students from West arnhem College have joined the Energy resources of australia (Era) workforce as part of a school-based apprenticeships and traineeships education partnership.

For the first time, two Year 12 graduates from West arnhem College’s Gunbalanya campus, Jai Nabulwad and Kristy Garnarradj, will begin full-time traineeships at Era.

Jai and Kristy are part of the largest ever intake of students by Era in the education partnership’s four-year history.

both Jai and Kristy had previously completed work experience at Era, and the education and training opportunities have led to real employment and career options. The other five students recently began school-based apprenticeships with Era.

already, the education partnership has achieved the first indigenous person to begin as an apprentice from West arnhem College and qualify as a tradesman.

College Director Mark Monaghan said the annual intake offers part-time instruction for school-based apprentices, and full-time employment for trainees, at the ranger mine.

“The school-based apprentices are senior students who train at the mine for two days each week, and study at the West arnhem College Jabiru

campus. after they finish Year 12 the apprentices may go on to train with Era full-time,” he said.

“West arnhem College has trade training centres at Jabiru and Gunbalanya campuses and trainers to complement Era’s on the job instruction.”

a number of tailored certificates are offered through the program, including automotive, conservation and land management, business, and information and communications technology.

Era Chief Executive andrea Sutton said: “We are proud of our diverse workforce of more than 500 employees, of which 16 per cent are indigenous people.”

“Era makes a valuable contribution to the Northern Territory and the alligator rivers region as a major employer.”

Jamie Cutler, Duncan Dennis and George Wilson – three of the West Arnhem Regional Council’s hardworking road crew – preparing roads in Maningrida for resealing. The council will be bringing in the heavy machinery to resurface the main roads around the community on Monday 12 May.

rOaDWOrKS have now begun on upgrading the arnhem Highway at the adelaide river floodplains, following a heavy Wet Season.

The repairs, on various sections along the five kilometre stretch of highway, would improve road safety and conditions of the road, according to Minister for infrastructure Peter Styles.

“During the significant amount of rain we received early this year, the arnhem Highway suffered considerable damage that needs to be rectified,” Mr Styles said.

“Our government is committed to ensuring the safety of all motorists, and with the increase of heavy vehicles utilising the road including tourists and cattle trucks as well as mining and oil and gas vehicles we need to ensure this highway is maintained.

“in a region as diverse and vast as the Northern Territory, we rely on quality roads and infrastructure and this upgrade forms part of that critical investment in regional australia.

“The works will take two weeks to complete and will involve lane closures and temporary speed restrictions.

“Full traffic management will be in place, so please follow all directions and safety measures issued.

“The works will be undertaken by allan King & Sons Constructions Pty Ltd at a cost of just under $700,000.

“We continue to operate regular maintenance and capital works upgrades on this road, to ensure improved access and safety for all road users.”

Mr Styles said discussions had been undertaken with the haulage industry to encourage night time travel where possible to minimise any impacts.

The beginning of the dry season, Yegge, is here.

Last week it was still hot and it was raining.

Now there is no more rain.

it is cooler now but sometimes it can still be hot in the middle of the day.

This little fella is a Nabarlek, a little rock wallaby.

The Nabarlek stay in their caves when it is too hot.

The caves are nice and cool.

The native hibiscus has pink flowers.

This plant keeps flowering for a long time.

When each flower opens it only lasts for about three or four days.

Then it falls to the ground.

When it is cool the Nabarlek like to come out of their rock shelters and look for food.

They love to eat the pink hibiscus flowers.

They will eat the flowers on the plant that they can reach.

They also eat the ones that have fallen to the ground.

This little fella ate six flowers that were on the ground. Now he is happy.

The Nabarlek (Petrogale concinna) is also known as the pygmy rock-wallaby or the little rock-wallaby.

Parks and Wildlife Minister bess Nungarrayi Price says rangers work in tough, challenging environments to make our parks safer and preserve the environment.

“The tasks rangers do on a daily basis are often dirty and dangerous and we want to thank them for working hard to make our parks so wonderful,”

Mrs Price said.

“being a ranger is the type of job that can be thankless. They do everything from picking up glass, catching crocodiles, providing first aid to tourists and feral animal management.

“These awards recognise the outstanding service rangers

provide the public with every day.”

The awards are open to all rangers working in the NT, including rangers working on Federal parks and trainees.

and glamour of the fashion industry runway means an opportunity to share their cultural heritage while gaining economic recognition.

The women represented babbarra Designs at the recent australian indigenous Fashion Week (aiFW) in Sydney.

babbarra Women’s Centre manager Claire Nichol said the two women were just two out of of twenty at the centre who had laboured over their fabric designs in preparation for the big week.

“The clothing collection looked spectacular on the catwalk, and we are proceeding with plans to produce a selection of the runway items at babbarra,” Ms Nichol said.

“all of the money that we’re making goes back into supporting employment and training for the local women.”

The inaugural aiFW event took place on 11-12 april this year, with organisers looking to expand to a week-long event in 2015.

The event featured collections including fashion, textiles, accessories and furniture and showed a mix of traditional and contemporary styles.

accepted the invitation to participate in the trade fair and used the opportunity to showcase a collection designed collaboratively by Caressa Sengstock and the women of babbarra Designs.

“as a result of this design collaboration, babbarra Designs was invited as a keynote speaker at the aiFW Design Forum Çreative Lab to talk about ethical collaborations between indigenous fabric producers and designers,” she said.

courageously spoke at the Design Forum in front of an audience of established and up-and-coming indigenous designers, fabric producers, and fashion media.

“Lenny and raylene also got to feature in an NiTV/SbS interview where they were able to talk further about the cultural significance of their fabric design work.”

Mrs Goya airra told NiTV reporter Malarndirri McCarthy many of the women’s design skills had been passed down from one generation to the next.

“Our grandmother and mother taught us to make mats or baskets or fish traps,” Ms Goya-airra said.

aiFW organisers acknowledged the babbarra women had come a long way and had shown great strength in presenting their work to the design forum.

Ms Nichol said the women’s involvement in the forum, and speaking to NiTV News, had been a great confidence-building exercise.

“For their families to see this at home in Maningrida was a great source of pride,” she said.

“We are very grateful for the support of aNKaaa, the australian Government’s regional arts Fund and those who contributed to our Pozible crowd funding campaign without which we would not have been able to attend.”

The Mercure Crocodile Hotel in Kakadu has taken the plunge and joined the fun for the Kakadu Triathlon, which gets underway on Saturday 31 May.

The Croc is offering competitors a special discount rate – a real bonus for out-of-town visitors.

Mercure Crocodile Hotel General Manager Daniel Lukritz said The Croc was more than happy to be a part of the community event.

“We are happy to offer a special rate of $161 for the Friday and Saturday nights for those participating in the Triathlon,” he said.

The Croc will also donate 15kg of sausages and man the barbecues, with all funds raised going to CareFlight.

JAbIRu StudEntS SWIM And SuRVIVE

OVEr the past few weeks the students of West arnhem College Jabiru have been participating in a Swim and Survive program at the Jabiru Town Pool with Mr Matt Mitchell and representatives of the royal Life Saving Society.

Students from Lower Primary to Year 9 built useful survival skills relative to their age group, with Year 8 and 9 students focusing on correcting their strokes and learning rescue techniques.

Swimming plays an essential role in maintaining personal health, fitness and wellbeing, and the Swim and Survive program helped all West arnhem College students build the skills to achieve this.

Jabiru area School Sports Coordinator Mr Matthew Mitchell organised this essential annual event, delivered by the royal Life Saving Society.

Mr Mitchell said it was important that good swimmers had the skills to keep themselves and others safe in aquatic environments.

“There have been approximately 621 drowning deaths between 2002 and 2012 in australia,” Mr Mitchell said. “This is an unacceptable statistic and reflects the importance of teaching swimming and water safety in schools. These programs are

essential to keeping kids safe in pools and in and around water.”

all students found the program to be enormously beneficial as it improved their swimming abilities and helped them learn important skills along the way.

For example older students learnt how to rescue someone in distress.

The students and staff of West arnhem College Jabiru would like to thank the West arnhem regional Council for their support of the program and use of the pool.

WEbASKEtbALL At WARRuWITHE Heart Foundation held a free basketball coaching and referee clinic at Warruwi on Wednesday and Thursday, 7-8 May, providing lunch for all participants.

NbL and WNbL referee Jason Kelly helped run the clinic, which was available to Sport and recreation staff as well as interested community members.

West arnhem regional Council Community Services Manager Kupa Teao said they had a great

turnout for the event.

“We had about 20 turn for the free clinic, organised by Sport and rec’s Patrick Lami Lami and beth Woods from the Heart Foundation,” Mr Teao said.

“We even had a teacher from the local school in attendance.”

Heart Foundation regional Tobacco Coordinator beth Woods said all people who attended would receive a certificate of participation.

bruCE burnett, a Year 5-6 student at Jabiru area School, travelled to Darwin recently to play alongside 200 other kids at the under 12 Schoolsport australia football championships at Palmerston.

after losing all four games on day one, bruce’s team, ParCS Power, went on to win the final in their group on day three.

bruce’s team manager Mark Grosser said bruce was “very excited” to be chosen for the team through his school.

“The impressive part was the improvement the boys showed over the three days,” he said.

“it was awesome to be a part

of a team that was committed to doing the best they could. i am very proud of their efforts.”

Eight teams were involved, coming from as far afield as alice, barkly, Katherine, arnhem, and Darwin.

bruce’s team coach, Glenn Dinwoodie from Woolianna School at Daly river, said the boys came from Port Keats, Nungmurriunga, Peppimenarti, Woolianna, adelaide river, Tiwi College, Milikapiti, Pulurumpi and Palmerston and Jabiru.

“We could see that we had some talent; it was just a matter of getting them to work together as a team,” Dinwoodie said.

On day two, ParCS Power had two wins and two losses.

“We were quietly confident that we could build on this in day three from what the boys had learnt,” Dinwoodie said.

The boys listened and learned on the first two days, and were very focused by the third, he said.

“The last day is what counts towards points, and the boys were switched on right from the start,” he said.

“in the end the boys won all their games on the last day and played some very impressive footy to take out the Motlop pool for the first time in seven years.”



NiNE teams are squaring off under the lights at the Jabiru Sports and Social Club courts in some exciting matches in the Jabiru 2014 Mixed Netball season, which started on Thursday 29 april.

after their win against Net Force One, JaS MonSTarS claimed top spot in the first week. but by round two, the lead had changed hands, with Kia Kaha leading, and JaS MonSTarS now fourth. reluctant Champs are unbeaten in second spot.

West arnhem regional Council Youth Sport and recreation Coordinator ian Douglass said there had been a great turnout for the early rounds.

“it was also great to see the kids from Djidbidjidbi and Merle Merle turn out for a game,” Douglass said.

“While this is an adult competition, kids can play provided they are under the supervision of a parent or guardian.

“ideally we would like to see players aged 14 or over on the court.”

under mixed netball rules, each team is allowed a maximum of three males, who must play in separate thirds of the court, with games consisting of four 10-minute quarters.

Douglass said teams that provided an

umpire received one bonus point to their total, with each win earning four points and a draw earning two. a forfeit or loss earns no points.

“a forfeit will be called 10 minutes after the scheduled start time,” he said.

“Defending 2012 and 2013 champions Kia Kaha have assumed top spot on the ladder and look to be the team to beat again, although the reluctant Champs remain unbeaten also.

“also please note that there have been a couple of unfortunate injuries in the past two weeks and that people are playing at their own risk, so please take care.”

iT was a case of “in at the deep end” when new resident anthony Jones hooked up with the winning team at the Jabiru Golf Club’s annual biathlon.

anthony caught the biggest fish in the two-day golfing and fishing extravaganza, held over the weekend of 3-4 May.

The “fishing virgin” surprised teammates Scott and Katarina Jacques and Sandy beaumont by hauling a a 96cm barra onto the deck of the Jacques-owned boat “biggest Mob”.

The prize-winning beast was anthony’s debut fish.

“it is the first fish i have ever caught in the Northern Territory,” Jones told The Wire.

“i was only invited to join the team after a last-minute pull out.”

Hence the name of the team, ‘Last Minute’.

Jones described his 10-minute struggle with the Kakadu barramundi as “exhilarating”. His tussle with the fish, caught at the Nourlangie rock bar, was captured on GoPro video.

“The fish was released and survived,” Jones said.

The ‘Last Minute’ team was up against strong competition in the annual event, with 11 teams signing up.

Grant Hampton, Club Captain at Jabiru Golf Club, said most of the catches were photographed and released.

“Only one was brought in for weigh-in,” Hampton said.

The fishing started Saturday morning, with a 7pm cutoff on Saturday night, he said.

“it was a big weekend of fishing and golf, especially for some, who went out at 12 o’clock on Friday night and didn’t return until 6pm Saturday,” he said.

“That’s a long time to be out and not come back with a fish!”

The size of the fish determined the team’s handicap in the golf, held the following day.

For Jones, a 96cm barra meant a handicap of 9 strokes for his team, reducing their 9-hole score to 30, which ultimately proved good enough to win the event.
