THE LOST LAKE NEWSFEBRUARY 2014
The PresidenT’s LeTTer
I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year. The weather as you know has been unbelievable. I want to thank Charlie for keeping our roads in good driving condition. It is impossible to clear all the roads at the same time, so we have to be patient when our road has not been cleared as fast as we think it should.
December 31st was Marty Portner’s last day on the ULLPOA Board, and we want to thank him for his service. I posted notification of the Board vacancy and we have had interviews for applicants. I chose to appoint Dave Stewart at the January 18th Board meeting and the Board approved. Dave will become the new ACC/ECC Committee Chairperson.
We had an Executive Session on January 4th to elect officers and to appoint chairpersons. The elected officers until December 31, 2014 are:
President – Mike RobinsonVice-President – Sue HillSecretary – Barb WieseTreasurer – Carol Brown
For Committee Chairpersons:
ACC/ECC – Dave StewartRoads – Charlie MooreBy-Laws/Rules & Regulations – Mary Anne BortmanDues & Assessments Review – Carol Brown
Security – Sue HillParks – Charlie MooreCovenants – Barb WieseOffice Administration – Mike RobinsonProperties & Maintenance – Mike RobinsonLong Range Planning – Sue HillPublic Relations Liaison – Mike HuberSpecial Events – Contact person is Mike Robinson; however, the Board will be deciding on which events they will choose to sponsor and to what extent they will donate funds.
The Board decided not to change the June, July, and August meeting dates to Thursday nights because the attendance at the night meetings showed no increase. Therefore, we will be meeting on the third Saturday of each month. I am reminding Members to please mail in the green response sheet included in your dues & assessments invoice. Your responses will assist the Board in making a final decision. I also want to remind Members they can give the Office their e-mail addresses if they would like to receive information that the Office sends out on various topics. Our website (www.discoverlostlake.org) contains vital information a Member may need.
Last but not least, I want to remind Members to please take their time driving this winter. At times, our 20 MPH speed limit might be too fast depending on our road conditions. In addition, remember that snowmobiling is only permitted on your property and our roads. Snowmobiling is NOT permitted in our parks or on other Members’ properties.
Mike RobinsonYour Board President
January 31st will mark the last day Don Finn will be a ULLPOA Board member. Since 2007, Don served as President, Vice-President, ACC/ECC Chairperson, and Roads Chairperson. He was also involved in Office Administration, Properties & Maintenance, and Parks. He plans to continue working with the ACC/ECC Committee and help out with our gates when the weather requires the gate arms be raised. I want to thank Don for all of the services he has provided the ULLPOA.

Our community CARE committee closed 2013 with a meeting and brunch and began 2014 with a change in our committee.
At our December 31 meeting, it was announced that Marilyn French will no longer be available to serve on our committee, yet she will continue as a Meals volunteer and with our Search and Rescue team. Marilyn began serving on our committee in January, 2010. For four years she has added wisdom and good ideas to our meetings, so it is with reluctance that we accept her decision. Thank you for your enthusiastic involvement, Marilyn, and for your faithful service. We will miss you at our meetings.
Due to privacy concerns, CARE will not attempt to provide a full meal to each new family moving into our community,
as mentioned in the November issue of Lost Lake News. Instead, we urge each of our Meals volunteers (and all residents) to be alert to new families moving into our community and to welcome them appropriately.
We thank Lorraine Murray for serving as our Meals coordinator for November-December and January-February. Connie Schiltz, 815-652-8742, will coordinate meals for March and April.
If there are other needs—for snow shoveling, emergency transportation, etc.—contact Paul Killian, 815-652-2903.
We wish you a happy 2014—with a minimum of emergencies.

Two years ago, when I was asked to chair the Long Range Planning Committee, I wrote an article for the Lost Lake News asking for volunteers to join the committee. At the time, I indicated that I was looking for people who were new to the community or anyone who, perhaps, had never served on a POA committee before. Judy and Ken Schwarz, Jim Haines, and Harold Stromberger came forward to volunteer. They have worked tirelessly for our community ever since! This is the group of people that worked so hard to make the Real Estate Broker Luncheon such a success plus working on a number of other projects! Harold has recently sold his house and is moving out of the community. Therefore, we have an opening for a new volunteer. If you have time to devote to this committee and are interested in getting involved with the community, please consider this opportunity. Call me at 815-652-0286 or email me at [email protected] with questions or to volunteer.

As more and more homes sell in Lost Lake, I feel the need to remind those who have lived here for a long time to set a good example for our new residents by following our Rules and Regulations and also to advise new residents to familiarize themselves with the Rules and Regulations of our community. The speed limit is 20 MPH on all streets 24/7! Our two security officers patrol and use radar to detect speeders. The reasons for having a 20 mph limit are numerous. Just a few examples are: walkers use the roads, deer frequently dash out in front of cars, and children ride bikes on the roads. Also, drivers need to STOP at our stop signs, including the stop sign at the front gates. Even if the gates are up because of bad weather, all drivers must stop at the gates when entering and exiting the community! Rolling through stop signs is a very bad habit to develop and will prove to be quite costly here, as well as when traveling outside the community.
If you reside on a street that has a constant speeding problem, PLEASE bring it to our attention! Call the Security Hotline (815-973-4567) and give information about the date and time that you witness car(s) speeding past your residence. The officers will monitor the area after receiving your report.
Remember to notify Security to check your residence while you are out of town. This is an added safety feature of living here at Lost Lake.
In closing, I want to remind everyone that when you invite a guest into our community, you are responsible for their behavior! So…please share our Rules and Regulations with them!
Thank all of you for doing your share to make this a safe and secure community!

the buffalo Are Coming! This is exciting news! In October of 2014 Nachusa
Grasslands, our neighbors here at Lost Lake, will be introducing a ”family” of 20 to 30 buffalo on a portion of their property. Cody Considine, an employee of Nachusa, was the speaker at our January Senior Focus meeting. Despite the extreme cold and snow, we had a great crowd of people gather at LCC to hear about the project. The fencing is now being constructed and the Grasslands is seeking volunteers to help with certain aspects of the project. If you are interested, you can call Cody at Nachusa Grasslands. For the first two or three years of this buffalo (bison) project as we travel east and south of our development, we may get a glimpse of the animals every now and then, but there are plans in place to build a viewing area once the project is well underway. This will become a great attraction for our neighborhood and our development here at Lost Lake. Thanks to all of you who turned out to hear about the project and enjoy a cold wintry morning with your friends and neighbors here at Lost Lake!

The Year of 2013 was a productive year for the LLUD. Several flushing hydrants were replaced and many water valves were located and made more accessible for our operator to turn off or on as needed. Our main breaks were few and not terribly expensive, allowing those allocated funds to be used for new flushing hydrants and for reserve funding for future upgrades. The LLUD also was finally successful in bidding on our new well and we have EPA approval to go ahead and drill. That project will start this spring, and after flow and quality testing, the LLUD will go out for bids for the well pump, piping and the addition to the well house. The amount of red tape involved in drilling a new well is unbelievable and took far longer than I thought. With some luck, the LLUD will begin replacing some of undersized mains on the east side of the lake later this year.
The water and sewer rates will remain the same for 2014, and at this time, I don’t believe the rates will change in 2015.

A special thank you to everyone who participated in our Arts and Crafts Show on Nov. 9th, in which we raised $377 from our silent auction, snack sales, quilt raffle and donations. There were many beautiful items auctioned off and sold from the exhibitors. Thank you, Judie Leonard, for donating the quilt for our raffle. Regretfully, we did not meet our minimum ticket sales in November, so instead, the winner received half of a 50/50 split and the quilt was raffled at the Snow Ball on January 25th. Thank you to the Special Events Committee for their cooperation with our raffle and art show as well as for the donation of $45 from their Pancake Breakfast 50/50. Dave Strasemeier's card group also gave us a generous donation of $75. We appreciate all the support we have received. Pennies for Parks has exciting things planned for the new year. First, to relieve the winter blahs we are planning a “Welcome Spring Health / Spa Day”
featuring booths with blood pressure and pulse readings, healthful snack samples, Taekwondo stretching & simple technique demonstrations, a 30 day fitness challenge sign up, and, hopefully, five minute massages & facials. The date for this is March 22; However, we will need at least 20 people to sign up to do this so call Barb Lundeen at 708-263-9834 by March 08th or mail in the form below. The fee for this event is $5 and the first 20 people to sign up will get a free pedometer. Lastly, we are having another Schwan’s fundraiser; however, this year it will be a little different. Starting March 4-April 18th, 20% of online orders will Benefit Pennies For Parks while the remainder of the year, 5% of your online orders will benefit it. To order online and participate, go to www.schwans.com and create an account. When you check out, scroll to the bottom of the page and type in Campaign ID #6496 and Fundraiser ID #16956. For more information, call Becky at 815-652-5267.
On Nov. 3, with the help of Jeff Winterland and his skidster & trailer, Robert Stocksdale, Shawn Parish, Tim Spelde, and Peter & Alex Breckenfelder, we relocated a 24’ X 10’ used playground unit that we will be installing at the LCC playground next year. We obtained this equipment free of charge from St. Mary Church in Oregon. Thank you also to the LLUD for allowing us to store the equipment temporarily. The RCD gave us permission to move the old steel slide over to the West Beach, along with a couple other pieces of equipment that we will either purchase or move from the LCC park. GARAGE SALE DAY – MAY 3, 2014
Garage Sale Day is usually held on the 1st Saturday of May, and this date will be here before you know it! As you know, this is a much anticipated event for both those wanting to buy
“another man’s treasures” and those wanting to sell their treasures. The volunteers would be responsible for collecting the names/addresses/items-for-sale from property owners, getting maps copied, and distributing the maps at each front gate. The POA will place ads in local newspapers
and pay for printing the maps. Please note that in the past, luncheon items and baked goods were sold at Lake Court Center; however, these activities will not be sponsored by the POA.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
If you have been following the newsletter, then you are aware that the committee that usually organized these events has dissolved. If the Members of Lost Lake
would like to see these events continue in 2014, then volunteers are needed. If you are interested in using your talents for either one of these events, please contact
Leslie at the POA office at (815) 652-4491 or via email at [email protected]
CHILDREN’S EASTER EGG HUNT – APRIL 19, 2014
We need volunteers to organize and participate. The POA will provide funds for the approved prizes and refreshments, as needed.
