In Mid-Michigan, we’re enjoying an “extended

summer.” By that I mean that at this writing (the first weekend in Octo-ber), we are enjoying a beautiful weekend with temps in the mid 80’s. For Michigan, that’s about 20 de-grees warmer than the normal aver-age. I hope everyone took advantage of the nice weather; washing your prized Olds or taking a tour of the countryside. I know I did - got the ‘04 Bravada washed along with my daily driver.

I want to thank all of those members who have contributed articles to this newsletter since I have been Editor. These articles help to keep our news-letter interesting and entertaining. At this time, we are in short supply of new articles (as in, “we’re out!”). If you have a particular car-related story, please put pen to paper and send it to

me so that I can share it with the membership. Or, if you find a good article somewhere, send that to me along with the name of the author and where it was first published (newspaper, magazine, etc.) With that, I can obtain the proper permission for re-printing it. Without the au-

thor’s permission, we usually can’t re-print the article because of copyright restrictions.

As a reminder, the Chapter Annual Banquet reservation form is re-printed on page 9 of this issue. Each member has already received a flyer in the mail on this event, but if you misplaced your flyer as I almost did, here’s a sec-ond chance for you. If you have never attended the Chapter’s annual ban-quet, consider doing so. The price is very reasonable and the company is the best. Be sure to get your reserva-tions in by October 24th! Hope to see you there.

Until next issue . . . . . Wayne

F ellow Oldsmobilers:

Wayne usually kids me about not being timely with this article. As to be expected I'm on deadline, but I'm not procrastinating I've just got writers block. I could mention the joint event with the Motor City Rockets on the 15th of October but I'm sure we all know about that. I could write about the Annual Banquet on November 5th but the check is in the mail for that I'm sure. I could bring up the Elections but you all are aware of them and are

considering throwing your hat in the ring. The by laws have been a big topic. Tons of work has been put into that with great results. One topic that always comes up is the Chapter having fun; I've tried with little success soliciting suggestions for improvement. So if there are any ideas about events, tours and speakers please let us know. I could mention about all the hard work and effort that goes into Homecoming but we all know what a gem it is and to mention the need for volunteers would just be repeating myself. So, seeing how I can't think of anything to write I won't. Happy Oldsmobiling

We will have a buffet style dinner with 2 entrees. There will be roast beef, lasagna, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad bar, vegetable, bread and butter, fresh fruit tray and ap-ple crisp. There will also be coffee, tea and a cash bar. The meal is $16. 00 each, BUT, the Chapter is paying $5.00 of each meal. That means you get your dinner for $11.00. Who could ask for anything more?

But there is still more! We are hav-ing an indoor Oldsmobile car show. We are asking you to bring your favorite model or model display to show everyone. We will have tables set up for you to put them on.

There will be a registration form (with no fee) to put with your car. The models can be hand-made, store-bought, big, little or just right. Just bring them along. There will be a trained team of judges to se-lect winners in various categories. You will also be eligible for a "Peoples Choice Award". This is going to be our entertainment for the evening so lets make it fun by everybody bringing a model.

We also have some business to attend to. This will be our annual business meeting and election of officers. You know you have al-ways wanted to take a more active role in the Chapter. This is your opportunity. Elected positions are

restore just the wood parts on a ‘Woodie’ would not be out of line. It was very interesting.

Mike also had many other collections scattered throughout his shop. They were very interesting also. We all spent time looking at everything and then walking back through to see things we missed the first trip.

After spending about 2 hours at Mike’s, it was time for everyone to hit the road. We said our goodbyes to everyone and thanked our hosts – the MCR and Jack and Dorothy. Don and I enjoyed our weekend with the MCR’s. What a fun group of people! They certainly know how to plan a weekend.

Thanks MCR for a great weekend!

One final note: Murphy’s Law went into effect as we were driving through Grand Rapids on our way to TC. A stone was thrown from a vehicle ahead of us. Of course, it hit our windshield putting a ‘nice’ chip in the glass. By the time we arrived home, it had cracked enough that it warranted replacement. Had it replaced three days later.

Q uestion: What could be better than a weekend of cruisin’ in

your favorite Oldsmobile to a beautiful area of Michigan with great people, who also enjoy Oldsmobiles?

Answer: Can’t think of anything better!

The Motor City Rockets extended an invitation via Jerry Garfield to join them for the weekend starting on Friday, Sept. 23 through Sunday for fun in Traverse City. Their annual event is hosted by MCR members, Jack Tokie and Dorothy Mesales.

Weather report for the weekend: showers Friday midday, then clearing with sunny, warm temps all weekend.

The MCR members left early Friday morning to have breakfast with Lanny and Pat Yankee in Linwood, MI, and then continue their caravan to TC. Don and I left that afternoon and joined them in TC at 6 p.m. that evening. It was a ‘just in time’ arrival for us as 6 p.m. was the appointed time for everyone to meet at Sam’s Club parking lot for the evening cruise. We only knew a few people from the MCR but everyone came over to welcome us and introduced themselves. Don just had time to gas up the ’72 and the caravan was off for a drive up Old Mission Peninsula. Our destination was the Chateau Chantal winery. After a wine tasting party, we caravanned to the other side of TC for supper at Boone’s Long Lake Inn. Wonderful up north setting, excellent food and LARGE servings.

Saturday morning after breakfast at the hotel, we all assembled in the parking lot to caravan over to display our cars from 9 to 1, at the Cherry Capital Cadillac/Oldsmobile d e a l e r s h i p . T h e y m a d e arrangements for a local radio DJ to broadcast live from our show. It was an Oldies station, of course.

Dorothy shuttled all the ladies

downtown to shop while the men enjoyed

‘car talk’. In her 7-passenger van, we stuffed 9 women for our quick 2-hour shopping trip. With the van stuffed with our bodies, we joked about not buying too many large items as we had very little room left in the van. Our shopping trip ended in time to get back to the car show and have lunch with the guys.

After lunch, the MCR had a 50/50 raffle to raise funds for the 2008 OCA Nationals, which they are hosting. Then door prizes were drawn and a group picture was taken. We then loaded up and cruised to Frankfort.

Our destination was to view the private collection of Larry Hale. Talk about ‘eye candy’. This man had a great collection of some 43 special cars. He provided a list showing: fifteen Indy Pace cars, eight Hurst Olds, one Olds Rallye 350, two Olds 442, four Olds Cutlass convertibles and other Chevys, Pontiacs, Buicks, and Fords. And if that wasn’t enough, he had several other collections of interest – too numerous to mention – three large buildings in all. We spent a lot of time here. Some of the women had to literally drag their husbands out of there.

We cruised into downtown Frankfort, walked the pier out to the lighthouse and then met at Celica’s restaurant for supper. There we had a two-hour supper, drove the waitress up the wall and fought over the homemade coconut cream pie. Actually that is a slight exaggeration - for humor, as everyone enjoyed the fellowship and teasing in the name of fun over a piece of pie. Having ate here before Jack knew about their delicious pies so when he made reservations for supper, he also ordered coconut cream pie. Before Jack even sat down, his piece of coconut cream pie was delivered to the table. Oh, he got teased about having dessert before supper. Well, at that point the pie was passed around the table with several

people cutting off a piece – he ended up with a few bites left. This, of course, set the pace for dessert after supper. Almost everyone ordered pie with the majority being coconut cream pie – there were only 7 pieces left. Needless to say, the waitress was able to make everyone happy with another choice.

It was dusk when we left to cruise back to TC from Frankfort. Driving back we came over a hill and there was the moon – full and bright on that cloudless night. It was so huge one could almost touch it, it seemed. It was also perfect convertible weather with several convertibles driving – top down all day and into the night.

Upon arriving back at the hotel, everyone went to the breakfast area to visit. They brought out the snacks and visited for a few more hours.

Sunday morning we all cruised over to the Cracker Barrel restaurant. From there we preceded to Mike Nickels place of business a little south of TC. He is one of 6 businesses in the U.S. that restores ‘Woodies’. This was also a “WOW” place. He had probably around 12 to 15 ‘Woodies” in various states of restoration. Two of the completed vehicles, were his. They were from various states. One was from Arizona. It had sat in the dessert for years and the original wood was sandblasted with grooves where the wood grain was. If I remember right, this was the vehicle that had a bundle of wood in back end. Not a large stack just a nice pile of various lengths and widths, Mike said that stack of wood alone cost $6,000.00. It was exotic wood from Hawaii.

Mike showed us how he forms the wood and the other various procedures he uses to make the wood frames, side molding and other various wood parts the ‘Woodies’ might need. He also discussed the finishes on the wood. He stated that $30,000.00 to

WARNING To all Oldsmobile owners. Make sure you know what your cars are doing when you leave them alone in a building and what they are talking about. While we were getting medical things done to prepare Katherine for surgery, our Toronado and our Bravada talked about maybe they should adopt an orphan Oldsmobile that had no home and since Oldsmobiles are no longer made they found one that needed a home so we now own a hearse. It is a beautiful 1972 Olds 98 Cotner-Bevington body hearse. It is the biggest one made in 1972 and has 57,000 original miles and has all the papers from delivery day on 08-20-72. We just love it, but have had little time to enjoy it as the medical started as soon we got it.

Pace Car

This past weekend Eva and I went to Traverse City with the Motor City Rockets. I got this from one of their members. You will probably not recognize this poor beat - up old Oldsmobile. I would bet that not even the most die hard Indy 500 fan would recognize it. The past thirty plus years has not been kind to this old beauty. This is Pace Car # 1. It was recently bought by Jeff Stolowski from Lake Ann, a member of the Motor City Rockets. It will soon be going in for a complete frame off restoration. It has been identified and validated as the true Pace Car # 1. Jeff plans to have it completed before the 2008 OCA Nationals to be held in Detroit and is looking forward to bringing it to our chapter Homecoming show as soon as it is ready. (see photo below)

Thank all of you so much for all the cards, calls, e-mails, and concern for our health. Katherine is starting the long road to recovery as it was much worse than even the doctor thought. She has two 12 inch rods in her back, and is coming along, but will need about 4 months to recover. I am not supposed to do anything. Can't work on my little projects, drive a car, or even do dishes-too bad. My surgery is now scheduled for 09-29-05 and I can hardly wait. Thanks again for all your concern. Even though this year was cut short, we are hopeful that by Spring we will be up and back at car shows, and doing what we love to do best, promoting Oldsmobiles.

The Johnsons live in Ludington, MI.

with Willis and Troy

W ell, it finally happened. For quite some time now you

been reading about our adventures. Would you believe we haven't had time to go anywhere. Actually this begs the question, “What have we been doing with all the stuff gathering on our trips and what about those items we try to help each other with on Ebay?” As Paul Harvey would said, “And now, the rest of the story. “

For any of you that had the misfortune to see inside my storage area, you know the tasks that lay ahead to get things organized and put away. As with the need to get to something done that you have successfully overlooked for quite some time, (as you took care of other obligations) the first thing you need is the motivation to get started (moms getting on my case 24/7 was getting close). Next is finding the time (being retired you know you will get it done tomorrow). The last item is where are you going to put it once you find it (this is usually the hardest, ‘cause everywhere you want to put it, something else is already there). Okay I think you got the picture even if you haven’t seen my storage area. Next up is step one, the real motivation.

Since a trip we took in November 2004, we’ve talked on and off about the ‘64 Cutlass convertible that was the result of that trip. I mentioned in our last article that we were planning a trip back to New Castle, PA to pick up a parts car for Willis (this is what started the sequence of events that is the bases of this article). We needed to take my car trailer to pick it up cause it would work better then Dick’s enclosed trailer. How many of you remember what’s on my car trailer (tick tock tick tock)? Okay I gave it away - for those of you that missed it - all together now - the ‘64 Cutlass convertible is on the trailer. Now that we are all in sync I know you’re saying, “Why don’t you take it off

coordinate membership and recruitment. Wayne Mason clarified the intent of those responsibilities would only be the reporting of activities to the Board. Chuck Mitchell made a motion and Jim Brehm seconded it to amend the section by removing the duties of Chapter Membership and recruitment from the Vice President. The membership voted 12 approve the motion and 4 opposed it. The motion was carried.

Article 5.2 was amended to read: The Vice President, in the absence of the President, shall perform the President’s duties.

5.3 Joe Pohl stated that financial information should not be published in the newsletter. Troy Collins responded that this article has not changed from the 2003 bylaws. Joe Pohl motioned that the Bylaws be changed to delete the requirement for financial information to be printed in the newsletter. Dick Harrington seconded the motion. The membership approved the motion unanimously. Judy Badgley motioned that there be a definition of a financial report for the general meetings. Jim Brehm seconded the motion. The membership approved the motion unanimously.

Article 5.3 was amended to read as follows: The treasurer shall keep the financial records of the chapter and shall furnish a written financial report, including previous month itemized income and expenses, with a copy of the monthly bank statement, at each general membership meeting.

5.8 Harry Emmons made a motion to change the title of “Member-at-Large” to “Membership Coordinator”. This position is also responsible to provide membership information to the Board. Joe Pohl seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously by the membership.

Article 5.8 was amended to read as follows: The Membership Coordinator shall be responsible for providing the Board with a status report on membership and all chapter social events and outings.

Article 6, No discussion on the changes proposed

Article 7, Marianne Harrington brought forth a proposal from Mike Ross (not at meeting and provided written document) to combine article 7 and 11 together. Both articles address meetings of the club. The membership present determined that the two articles should remain as documented.

the trailer.” This jumps us ahead to the last item of our three step approach to taking care of our stuff.

The ‘64 Cutlass engine doesn’t run so the car needs to go into the

hoist area so it can be worked on over the winter. However, the hoist area has the ‘73 Cutlass parked there, cause the ‘Vet is parked where the Cutlass should be parked. The ‘Vet is parked where it is, cause the ‘40 Olds rolling chassis is parked where the ‘Vet should be parked ( I know I only have myself to blame, but look how much fun y’all are missing). In addition to this I have the ‘65 Corvair and a ‘77 Toronado that have almost disappeared under stuff. Fortunately for me I’ve had thirty years of warehousing during my working years where you had to put more and more things into less and less space. This now takes us to step two - Time.

Up until a few months ago, I had no time because it was being spent taking care of volunteer obligations. I’ve always had a problem doing My things when I have other responsibilities. Since I can’t change who I am, and with my health going down the tubes, I decided that thirteen + years of volunteering had to be reduced and I did it. With the time gained I should have things completed in a few more weeks (before the snow falls would probably be closer, but I’ve quieted moms down by using “weeks”). Anyway by putting the three steps together the Corvair and the Toronado have been uncovered and the Toro is now in the hoist area, the Cutlass is covered outside, the Vet is back where it belongs, almost all of the parts (except Ebay items) are stored in the top of the garage and will be on the computer later during the snows, the spots for the ‘73 Cutlass and Toro are almost ready and will be moved so I can get the ‘64 Cutlass off the car trailer right after I complete the breezeway project that goes from my bedroom to the garage and will have the downstairs computers and the garage office located within ( I think I set a record for the longest sentence, but its just symbolic that it hasn’t been as easy as it sounds). Thanks to Willis AKA Mr. Brownie (two boxes and counting) for his assistance and he thanks me for getting him started on his stuff. How’s yours?

Till Later, Happy Oldsing

The flyers, with the changes, should be available for the committee to proofread at the October committee meeting. As soon as we have the final draft, they will be printed. We are working to have them available by the end of 2005.

Don Cooper has volunteered to be the official contact person for the show. We will be publishing his phone number and a show email ad-dress on the flyers and at the website. The new emai l address i s : [email protected] for all Homecoming questions

We have also added another host hotel. The Amerihost Suites, located about 1 mile from the site has agreed to be an advertiser on our flyers.

A Homecoming budget committee was organized with Terry Pinkney offering to chair the group and be the

Homecoming bookkeeper to keep track of our income and expenses. The budget committee met at a later date and has the 2006 budget nearly ready to present to the Chapter Board for approval.

As you can see we are progressing well ahead of our previous schedule. If you are interested in helping on the organizing committee, please contact one of us. More is better for every-body.

T he Homecoming Committee held its first meeting for the

2006 show in August 2005. This was the first time we have met this early. We decided at the end of the 2005 show that we would do this to get some things decided earlier. Ken Nicholas chaired this meeting al-though we are in need of a show chairman. We are currently operating as a committee with no "fearless" leader. Anyone interested in chairing the show should contact a committee member.

Ashley Jones has set the works in mo-tion to secure the same site as we had the last few years. He will get the con-tract and then we can get the insur-ance and be ready to go.

We selected a feature car for 2006. We are going to feature the Rallye 350. There is an active group of these collectors that are planning to organ-ize a first-time-ever Rallye 350 Home-coming. (These cars were all built in Lansing.) They will be assembling for their Homecoming at our Homecom-ing show. They will have a separate

mixed with air (hence, "homogeneous charge), as in a spark-ignition engine, but with a higher proportion of air to fuel. Rather than using a spark plug to ignite the air-fuel mixture, however, the mixture is compressed by the piston until rising temperatures inside the chamber ignites it spontaneously - a process similar to that used in a

diesel engine (hence, "compression ignition"), but at a much lower temperature. The lower c o m b u s t i o n temperature combined with the high ratio of air to fuel, known as lean operation, virtually e l i m i n a t e s N O x emissions and lowers throttling losses, which leads to a significant boost in fuel economy.

Despite the advantages offered by HCCI engines, controlling HCCI combustion in the real -world e n v i r o n m e n t v e r s u s t h e l a b environment is a major hurdle for its commercialization, according to Dr. Patrick Popp, director of Electrical & Controls Integration Lab, GM Research & Development and Strategic Planning. "For it to be successful, HCCI will require development of advanced control technology and systems to make it robust. The development of critical sensors and actuators, along with control systems, will allow us to maximize the performance of the combustion system during transient operation, and comprehend the variation in fuels found around the globe."

Dr. Rolf Leonhard, executive vice president, Engineering Gasoline Systems Division, Robert Bosch GmbH, believes that HCCI could be a very promising technology for future generations of gasoline engines. "It is simply a better way to combust, providing large gains in fuel economy," Leonhard stated. "Due to the 'cold' HCCI combustion, engine raw emissions can be drastically reduced, offering the potential to meet emission standards with a cost effective three-way catalyst. However,

a n d S t a n f o r d U n i v e r s i t y a r e developing a cost-effective engine technology that makes gasoline engines much more efficient and diesel engines much cleaner, for both conventional and hybrid propulsion systems.

Under a three-year, $2.5 million program announced today, GM, Bosch and Stanford researchers will work to accelerate the development of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, or HCCI, which is a research technology that has the potential to dramatically improve the efficiency of gasoline and hybrid propulsion systems by more efficiently burning the fuel. HCCI could enable the improvement of gasoline engine fuel efficiency by 20 percent, while achieving near-zero oxide of nitrogen (NOx) emissions and particulates - contributors to ozone depletion and smog.

According to Dr. Gary Smyth, director of Powertrain Systems Research Lab, GM Research & Development and Strategic Planning, "It is GM's goal to develop and demonstrate the viability of HCCI -- a clean, efficient combustion process - - within the next few years. The joint program will allow us to expand the scope of controls, sensors, and actuators work beyond what we're already doing toward this goal."

This technology is attractive, as HCCI engines have the potential to provide a dramatic increase in fuel efficiency over conventional port fuel-injection spark-ignition engines and can run with diesel-like efficiency, but produce near zero particulates and very low NOx emissions. "For example," Smyth said, "gasoline engines could achieve 80% of diesel engine efficiency for about 50 percent of the cost."

In the HCCI engine, fuel is uniformly

stable and satisfactory operation of an HCCI engine is not possible without f u r t h e r d e v e l o p m e n t a n d sophistication of sensors, actuators and feedback control systems. The goal at the end of the day will be to suggest a complete engine controls solution that is both robust and cost effective."

The Bosch Group, specifically the Bosch Research and Technology Center (Bosch RTC) in Palo Alto, CA, in conjunction with Stanford, have already been working on advanced sys tem techno logy fo r HCCI combustion control. During the same timeframe, GM's global research and development team, in cooperation with a number of other universities and suppliers in both North America and Europe, has developed an HCCI combustion system concept, base engine architecture, and operating strategy that allows the operation of HCCI over a broad engine speed and load range.

The interaction between industrial and academic researchers is central to this project. "Stanford's real strength is the ability to offer new perspectives on problems," stated Professor Chris Gerdes of Stanford University. "In the case of HCCI, we have demonstrated how the physics of combustion can be used as a model for the control system, tightly linking the fields of combustion and control. We are excited to now be partnered with GM and Bosch to help bring these ideas from the lab to the road," Gerdes said.

According to Dr. Smyth, the joint program nicely blends the two company's needs, as GM explores the potential commercial implementation of HCCI engines, and Bosch strives to develop the technologies critical to the manufacture of key HCCI sensors and actuators . "We bring engine, combustion and control system experience along with key operating strategies," Dr. Smyth said. "Bosch and Stanford supply control system experience along with knowledge associated with critical sensors and actuators."
