I am just a little embarrassed right now. At the Founder’s Day Dinner meeting Rich came up with a simple game: just name the sails on a

sailboat. Should be a piece of cake, right? Well, I did not get a single sail on the threemasted tall ship right, but I had a grthe “Master and Commander” series. Speaking of Dinner Meetings, remember that the next one on March 1st is the night we elect next year’s slate of officers for the Executive Board. Please plan to attend and let your choice be registered.

On April 5th our regular Dinner Meeting is our Change of Watch. The theme this year is “Charting a course to the Future”. Come see the special decorations and enjoy the dinner that has been “kicked up a notch.” The new slate of officers will be sworn inreceive a well-deserved roast! obtained by returning the RSVP part of the invitation which should be in your mailbox in the next week or so. If you have not been to a meeting inyour friends old and new.

Somebody; I think it was Yogi Berra, once said; “The future is not what it used to be.” How true this is. The USPS, through its various programs and classes, has been invaluable in preparing new and not-so-new boaters for a safe and fun future on the water. Locally, our Squadron has done its part in preparing boaters to venture safely onto the Salish Sea and beyond. So how is today’s future different from what it used to be? How about computers,i-pads, cell phones used in navigation, increasing concern for the health of the sea itself, and such busy, complicated lives that leave many believing just getting the certification is more important than real knowledge? And the list goes on and on. Hocontinue to lead in boater safety and fun in this changing environment? This is the year we will be searching for answers to these and other questions. If you have some ideas on how we should be getting ready for the future please drop meetings. Please come aboard.

A Few Words From Rich

February Dinner Meeting

Thank you for allowing me to share Derek Lundy's book, Ship, with you. It must have been a fearsome thing to be up in the "yards," over a hundred feet above the deck, on a pitching and rolling square rigger! After the meeting, Luke Curtis told me that he was acquainted with Derek, and that he lives on Salt Spring Island, B.C. It would be fascinating to have him as a speaker sometime.

Did you enjoy the telling and listening of sea stories at your table? I certainly did! Collectively, we have a wealth of experiences that we can share with one another. If you would like to have another round of tales, please let me know. After all, the same lost-in-the-fog story can be repeated as long as the table audience is different.

New Volunteer and Thanks to Those Who Served

Lt Ed Yotter, SN and Diane Yotter, we thank you! You have managed our Ship's Store for many years, giving us all the opportunity to look good on the dock in our Poverty Bay regalia. As you are retiring from this position, P/C DeVere Lindh, SN has stepped forward on this assignment, and will take over the responsibility. By the way, the Ship's Store format has changed entirely: members order from the catalog that is available at meetings or even available at your request.

There are a lot of quality items available, and with the Poverty Bay logo, you'll always be "look'n good." By the way), P/C Terry Scott, P will be helping DeVere with the technology to make buying an easy experience. More to come...

Our Calling Committee

Is very diligent in checking with us, month after month. Please let these stalwart volunteers know if you will be attending our dinner meeting. And don't forget our mantra: "A reservation made is a reservation paid."

Change of Watch - April

It's hard to believe that a full year has almost passed. Our Change of Watch will happen at our April 5 dinner meeting. Our incoming Commander, Lt/C Tom Spohn, P is planning some special surprises, I hear. Also, Past Commander Kara Dalkey, P will be serving up some special "tributes" to outgoing Commander Mary Quande, P. This will be a fun meeting! Mark your calendar, and join your Poverty Bay friends for a good evening.

FEBRUARY 2012 Dinner Meeting – Founders DayBy Lt Marc Nelson, AP

Photos by P/C Jack Green, SN

Once again The Poverty Bay Pirates gathered for Founders Day. Many wore all sorts of Pirates garb, and some only with earrings to ward off being fined for not being in costume, arrrrgh. As befittin’ any official Pirates gathering we decided to share tales, mostly true, tales of woe and tales of noooooooooo! Oh wait, that was Bob’s tale, never mind. Then Pirate Rich read some seafarin’ tales of men climbing

over 100 feet up the masts in nasty blows that would make many a man’s legs turn to rubber. Then after considerin’ ourselves lucky with all our modern Pirate conveniences we were tested by Pirate Rich to identify some 34 sails on an old sailing ship. This proved to be a mighty devastating test as many Pirate power boaters gave up, figurin’ the Pirate sailors would run away with the test! Not so fast there mateys! Turns out our sailing friends were mightily challenged as well. The Pirate winners, see picture, happily received their reward… are you

ready for it? They sailed away with Full Sail brew! No wonder they left smiling! Next up we paraded our 2012/2013 Pirates Bridge up in front of the masses for inspection. Apparently they passed muster and await the official Pirate Vote on March 1st.

A 6,000 acre peninsula at the mouth of Gray’s Harbor and the only deep water port on the Pacific Coast, north of San Francisco, Ocean Shores includes six miles of sandy beaches, along with 23 miles of interconnecting lakes, canals, and miles of scenic bayside offering several activities to enjoy before and after the conference.

All Shilo Inn Suites rooms face the beach with private balconies and an open, non-obstructed view of the ocean. Each room has a sitting room with “fireplace,” wet bar, refrigerator, and either double queen or single king size beds. Handicap and handicap accessible rooms are available. The hotel is dog friendly with rooms located on the ground floor. Recreational amenities include an indoor pool, spa tub, sauna, steam room, and fitness facility. Parking is free.

Please make your reservations directly with the hotel by March 14, 2012, to take advantage of USPS-District 16’s Group Contract rate of $99.00 (plus tax) per night. We have reserved 50 Ocean View Suites for the conference which are expected to go quickly. Friday evening’s reception to meet the Chief Commander’s representative and buffet will be held in the main ballroom. A registration table will be available from 1500-1900 in the lobby, outside the ballroom. Registration will also be available at the same location on Saturday morning from 0800-1000 with the conference starting at 0915 in the ballroom. In order to move the Conference along and stay on schedule, we will have the majority of the officer’s reportsavailable in writing for the members to read. In the past, this has reduced the time for the business meeting and allowed more time to explore other issues of interest to the members. Time will be made available for attendees to ask questions about the reports that are presented.

Since a District 16’s goal for its members is “having fun,” we have added some variety to the conference by adding a bit of Mardi Gras flair to Friday evening’s reception with a classic Cajun Jambalaya Buffet. You may need to brush up on your Mardi Gras knowledge since there will be a fun trivia quiz for those interested. For our Saturday evening dinner, Mardi Gras festive attire or costume is optional and more than welcome. Continuing the District’s trend to dress casual, Saturday’s evening’s dress for the District 16 Bridge are blazers and no ties (Marti Gras beads optional). You will be provided with complimentary masks and beads. An opportunity for “photo ops” (with or without masks and beads will be available) by our District Photographer, Steve Erickson. We will have entertainment during our Saturday evening dinner by Ericka

Twelve brave adventurists joined forces to survive the 2nd annual winter rendezvous at the Des Moines Marina on January 27th - 29th. The weather was not quite as frosty as the previous expedition which was good because we had some new warm blooded members this time. Luckily we could all find shelter in the warmth of the Bianca and if you were really cold their sled dog Bianca would offer you a lapcurl. The ice cutters Mossback and Knotty Time made the short distance from their respective slips while the Arctic explorers Brizo & Ranger Tug 28 traveled from far off Tacoma.

We made tracks (snowmobiled) up to the Mandarin Kitchen for warm rice bowls and were joined by many other explorers from past expeditions. Saturday morning brought us rain so we were forced to construct a shelter for our cooking camp. It took all of the party members to erect the shelter and then provide some warmth for the fire tender and cooks. Captain Terry Scott went to work preparing the protein for the evening’s delicacy. Luckily he did not have to slaughter it, as was partially prepared at home (seal can be so messy.) The damp afternoon gave way to a few card games with one pair of ladies hoarding all of the luck at their table.

Dinner was a hearty stew with potluck side dishes. Captain Terry prepared some grog to act as an anti-freeze and if you could get a cup down, its warmth spread clear to your pinkie toes. Again we were joined by many guests but none quite as memorable as Pablo. Pablo had been working at the boat show that day and ventured down to the marina via his bicycle, to get a better look at boats afloat. By then Don Parker had managed to get a few cups of grog down and seeing Pablo out in the cold graciously invited him in for a bowl of soup and a cup of grog. This was all good and well except for the fact that Don left and was talking shop on the Brizo, leaving the others entertain Pablo (of which no one spoke Spanish.) So we gave Pablo a container of warm stew and he went on his merry way with container in one hand and a handlebar in the other.

Sunday morning we were treated to Captain Terry in his red Union Jack onesie (complete with a back flap & a button.) We enjoyed some coffee, warm biscuits, gravy and fresh fruit before we had to dismantle our “snuggery”. Thankfully we were all able to return to our posts and we did not have to leave anyone on Elephant Island awaiting a rescue. This is an annual event and we hope more of you have the endurance to join our expedition next year.

Foss Waterway Seaport’s Spring 2012 “Do-it-Yourself” Workshops - Board Member Helps Start New Service for South Sound Boaters

The Foss Waterway Seaport’s new “Do-it-Yourself” series of mariner education workshops marks a new era for South Sound boaters. Starting March 6th South Sound boat owners and crew who want to learn how to do everything from fiberglass repairs to choosing the best new marine radios to preventing marine corrosion can learn from the experts right in their own community.

The Seaport’s complete Spring 2012 “Do-it-Yourself” Workshop schedule is available at http://www.fosswaterwayseaport.org/education-programs/adult-workshops. Courses range from $30 for two-hour evening courses to $60 for all day sessions.

When Richard (Dick) Baerg joined the Seaport’s Board in 2008, one of his goals was to establish high quality adult boater education programs in the South Sound region.

Over the last two years, the Seaport’s Education Program has taken off, now offering land-based field trips, boat-based marine science expeditions, Summer Science SeaCamps, and family programs that serve the region’s school districts and families with a variety of hands-on learning activities. (See http://www.fosswaterwayseaport.org/education-programs.)

With these successes fueling the Seaport’s growth, Baerg felt that now was the time to start offering mariner education workshops to meet the demands of the South Sound community. A retired physician and boater himself, Baerg knew there are thousands of boaters in Pierce County and throughout the region who want accessible, centrally located resources for boater education.

“Until now, there has been a vacuum in Pierce County and the South Sound with no single place offering a variety of ‘do-it-yourself’ mariner education workshops,” says Baerg. “There isn’t a wooden boat association offering a variety of courses, and most South Sound boaters have had to go to Seattle for such workshops.

“Likewise, most ‘do-it-yourselfers’ aren’t interested in ‘commercial’ overviews of a single product line such as those classes offered by marine stores. Local yacht clubs offer some courses, but they’re often hit or miss; they aren’t coordinated regularly.”

Baerg knew that highly skilled South Sound marine experts would be willing to teach mostly on a voluntary basis or for a low honorarium, making the courses very affordable for the “do-it-yourself” boater. He also was aware that the Seaport’s waterfront Tacoma location and mission to serve the community with maritime related activities could fill the gap.

Housed in the century-old historic Balfour Dock Building on the Thea Foss Waterway in downtown Tacoma, the Seaport is centrally located in Pierce County and draws people from all over Puget Sound. Boaters can moor at the Seaport’s 1,200 feet side-tie docks to visit the maritime heritage museum and marine science program where they “discover by doing.”

The 45,000 square foot facility houses collections of classic recreational vessels and tells the stories of how the region’s working waterfront put Tacoma on the global shipping map, but also led to enormous contamination of Puget Sound that even today threatens our marine ecology. The Seaport’s role in providing community education has expanded to the point that ten school districts and four higher education institutions now partner to provide learning outside the classroom for their students with waterfront hands-on, active learning tours and projects.

Baerg contacted a number of marine experts in the area and enlisted their participation as instructors for the Spring 2012 “Do-it-Yourself” Workshops. He personally rounded up each instructor, scheduled all the class dates and times, and turned over the entire package to Seaport staff to publicize. His expectation, and that of the Seaport, is that Adult Workshops and mariner education will now be an ongoing part of the Seaport’s Education Program, serving the South Sound boating community.

With spring just around the corner, now is the time to put some special TLC into your boat. The Seaport is doing its best to help boaters in the South Sound learn how to do that affordably!

Legacy Fund UpdateBy P/C Jack Green, SN

In early 2007 a committee was formed to explore the establishment of what became Poverty Bay’s “Legacy Fund”. It was approved by the membership in May, 2007. I updated the membership at our February meeting on why it was created, its current status and the process for utilization of the funds. Hopefully this article will be of value to those of you who were not there.

The Legacy Fund was created to provide money for “projects, activities and purposes that benefit PBSPS’s overall mission” and are outside the normal financial budget of the squadron. Donations to the fund are made to our treasurer and can come from any member; they are tax deductible. What makes this fund different from our regular funds is that only the income can be spent, not the principle.

As of January 31 the Legacy Fund has a total of $7,120.94 of which $1,020.94 represents the gain the fund has generated since 2007 and is the amount available for a suitable expenditure.

How does the fund actually work? Any active member may apply to the Legacy Committee for funds to accomplish a specific purpose. Again, the purpose should be outside our normal budget items such as education, publications, rendezvous or equipment. If approved by the Legacy Committee, the Treasurer will distribute the funds for the project.

The Legacy Committee changes each year with the Immediate Past Commander (chair), Commander, Treasurer, senior Member at Large plus a member in good standing appointed by the chair.

We encourage members to donate to this fund and think about ways to put the money to good use in our community.

UNSUNG HEROES of the POWER SQUADRONBy P/C Kara Dalkey, P

In this month’s installment, we salute:

After all, the Power Squadron is nothing without the members, the folks who come for the classes and the advice and the dinner lectures and who stay for the friendship and the fun. Your support and participation create an organization that helps provide the same learning opportunities for other new boaters that come along. We assist others on Puget Sound with boat inspections and provide good examples in the way we handle our own craft and, on occasion, provide emergency assistance to others. We help get the word out that there is more to know about recreational boating, whether in safety, boat maintenance, care of the Sound environment, or navigational skills. You are the Power Squadron, and your support makes it happen.
