LINTON News April 2019
Linton Cricket Club End of Year Report
As discussed last report, the U/16’s headed to Derrinallum to face an undefeated Tigers team. Unfortunately for the boys and girls
they were beaten. Linton 9/123 (Bailey Paul 26 runs) def by Derrinallum 2/342
Congratulations are in order for the kids making finals in their 1st season in the competition.
So, the final round of the home and away was completed and Linton Blue were defeated by Lexton.
Gold however, won their top of the table clash quite handsomely downing Lismore by bowling them out for 130 and then chasing them down with 5 wickets in hand.
Gold finished the season on top in Division 2 and faced a semi battle with Smythesdale.
It wasn’t to be for Smythes however as the leagues Total Fire Ban policy meant play was abandoned on both the Saturday
and the relief day on the Sunday. Gold straight into the Grand Final!
A rematch against Lismore on the cards at Haddon.
Lismore won the toss and batted and lost 2 wickets in the 1st two overs. Gold on top for a fair chunk of the innings saw Lismore restricted to 162 on a very fast ground. Simon Brearley with 4 wickets, Pete Dunne and Dylan Peterken with 2 each. When Darren Edwards went early and a handful of overs Later both Aaron Kerr and Josh Foley were out, Linton may have felt a few nerves at 3/40. But Brearley and James Mensfeld batted masterfully and made the runs without the loss of another wicket. Brearley 51 not out and Mensfeld 67 not out. A great win for the club!!
Presentation Night
The Linton Cricket Club held their presentation night at the blue room last night. A wonderful turn out around the 50 mark and a great night
had by all. Good to see some past players like Craig and Brad Palmer, Neil Doolan and Joe Stasse in attendance. The night saw 2 new life members added to the club this season.
Len McDonald, who started his career in 1983 and has played 219 games for over 4000 runs. Frequently at the club and always willing to help out, be it filling in, bringing a plate of sandwiches for arvo tea, or like last night cooking the bbq.
Adam Stasse started in 2001 and has played over 170 games and taken over 230 wickets, a tireless worker on and off the field, is known for collating the stats before I took over, chasing up players to fill sides and is now sitting on the league executive.

The pantry continues to assist families needing a little help.
Thank you for those who donate regularly but might I ask if you would consider sugar, coffee and long life milk this week. These are popular items and they quickly get used.
Currently we are in need of items such as margarine and cheese.

Bennita Hough, Secretary 0488037849
I read the article in the March newsletter and commend the
Linton & District men’s shed for highlighting this disease. My
husband was diagnosed at the beginning of November last
year. He underwent a radical prostatectomy on 27th
February this year and is currently recuperating from the
procedure. It is important to highlight the disease as many
men (not all), seem to put their health on the back burner
and have the attitude of “I’ll worry about it later.” The
problem is later may be too late. Prostate Cancer is labelled
a “silent killer” with good reason. It is the second highest
cause of death amongst men in Australia, the first being lung
cancer. B
rent (my hubby), has been having PSA tests since his early
forties. It is a simple blood test that is used to detect
abnormally high levels of a protein substance in your blood
that may indicate prostate cancer. He made it part of his
annual check up and it has saved his life. Earlier last year his
results came back with a higher reading than normal, in
consultation with his doctor and specialist they decided to
wait and do another test three months later. It had dropped
but was still up.
He had a cat scan to check to see if he had an enlarged
prostate. He did not. In late October the decision was made
by Brent on recommendation from the specialist, to have a
biopsy. Of the twenty sites taken eleven tested positive for
cancer. Because of his age (57) and the results of the biopsy
it was recommended he have a radical prostatectomy.
After a cat scan and nuclear scan, it was found the cancer
had not spread elsewhere in his body. We breathed a sigh of
relief. The PSA testing had saved his life. Without that he
would not have known he had prostate cancer as he had
none of the symptoms that would indicate something was
wrong.
I would hate to think what the outcome would have been in
the future. Like many, we always felt that we were immune
to this sort of thing and that it happens to other people. We
found out differently.
Cancer does not discriminate. Young or old, rich or poor, it’s
not selective.
So, guys, if you have had prostate issues within the family
(other family members,) talk to your doctor. If you have any
symptoms don’t hesitate to seek advice and help. Prostate
cancer is considered an old man’s disease and I’m not trying
to scare anyone but, I lost a friend to this disease years back
in his early fifties. It was advanced by the time he knew
about it and lived for only a couple of years after diagnosis.
The recommended age for PSA testing is 60+ although in
America it’s 50+. If there is a family history 40+ unless of
course you are showing symptoms. I found this information
in a brochure given to us by the Base Hospital.
Personally, now speaking from experience, 40+ onwards
wouldn’t be too soon. Brent saw a close friend die from
cancer and decided there and then to start screening, hence
the early age. (There was no history of the disease in his
family.) I would like to finish by saying this. You are
important and your health is important. Get your checks up
if needed. Speak to your health professionals. There are
other conditions that can give you the same symptoms. It’s
not always cancer. I am on this journey with my husband. It
is not easy, but with wonderful health professionals, family
and friends, we are remaining positive. The prognosis so far,
is positive. Think of your family and friends and the impact
on their lives and please make the right choices, be aware
and look after your health. Prostate cancer need not be a
death sentence, it is slow growing but can become
aggressive, so the earlier it is detected, the better the
outcome.
By the way, I do have permission to discuss my husband’s
condition. Both Brent and I agree, the more we get this
message out to the wider community the better. We have
both become advocates for the awareness of this disease.
Take care everyone
Lesley and Brent Berriman

From the Past Grenville Standard, Saturday 1 May 1915— CONCERT AT LINTON REALISES OVER £15.
Some weeks ago Miss Maisie Wise began to organise a children's concert for the relief of the starving Belgians. The children's dialogue, " The Quest for Happiness," was very nicely performed by the young people, whose costumes and make-up, which Mrs Wise kindly designed and supervised, were excellent.
The various parts were as follows: — Fairy Queen, Miss - Ebbels ; Queen of Flowers, Miss Maisie Wise; Hope, Miss Stella Ralf; Father Time, Mr Bert Barton; Roses, Misses Hazel Ball and Alice Commons; Violets, Misses Elva and Bernice Ball; Ivy, Misses Ella Ching and Gladys Barr; Passion Flowers, Misses Stella Todd and Nancy Walker; Pansies, Misses Enid Burns and Daisy Savadge; Fairies, Misses Mavis Ball, Dolly Barr, and Freda Burns. The stage decorations by Mrs Wise were very tasteful and effective.
Guest speaker from Ballarat at our March History Night
Ballarat historian Phil Roberts was the guest speaker at our History Night on 18 March. Phil has written a number of books about Ballarat local history and on this occasion his topic was the Ballarat Avenue of Honour and the Arch of Victory. His power point presentation covered the history the famous avenue since the first planting of 1917; the sto-ry of the Arch of Victory; the involvement and contribution of the Lucas Girls; the people of the avenue; and the re-cent history of the avenue.
Phil brought along the coffee-table size book that he has written on the history of the Avenue & the Arch of Victory enti-tled Avenue of Memories. It features a great many fascinating photos and a list of all the names that are included on the plaques attached to every one of the 3,800 trees in the avenue that stretches all the way to Learmonth. The book re-tails for $40.00 and can be obtained by emailing Phil at [email protected].
Joan Hunt’s book launched at Happy Valley
The book version of the late Joan Hunt’s PhD thesis, entitled Springdallah: a gold-field mining community mid-19th centu-ry, was launched by Jill Wheeler on Sat-urday 9 March at the Piggoreet and Hap-py Valley Old Scholars’ Association reun-ion in the old Happy Valley School.
Joan died tragically in September last year and her husband Gary has brought this important piece of local historical research to fruition as a published book. Springdallah is a detailed analysis of the now forgotten mining communities of the district in the heyday of the deep lead mines. It has many wonderful photos, maps and tables, and an index that will be of assistance to people wanting information on particular families. Email Gary Hunt to order a copy: [email protected]
Next Open Day — Our next two Open Days for the year will be on Sundays 14 April and 12 May, 2-5pm at the Letty Armstrong Resource Centre in Sussex Street.

Your feedback sought – three options on the table for Golden Plains Shire Council’s electoral structure The community can have its say on three options proposed for Golden Plains Shire Council’s 2020 electoral structure, following the release of a report from the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) today.
The preliminary report is part of the VEC’s electoral representation review of Golden Plains Shire Council, which commenced in January 2019 with an information session and a month-long public submission period. The VEC asked community members to consider the number of councillors and whether the council should be subdivided into wards.
Twenty-five preliminary submissions were received, all of which were carefully considered in drawing up the options. The VEC also analysed demographic, geographic and electoral data and trends.
Golden Plains Shire Council’s existing structure is unsubdivided with seven councillors. The options outlined in the preliminary report are:
• Option A: Seven councillors elected from an unsubdivided electoral structure
• Option B: Seven councillors elected from three wards (one three-councillor ward and two two-councillor wards)
• Option C: Eight councillors elected from three wards (two three-councillor wards and one two –councillor ward). Electoral Commissioner, Warwick Gately AM, encouraged community members to get involved by reviewing the report and making a submission.
‘We want to ensure all voters are represented in a fair and equitable way, so now’s the time to speak up,’ Mr Gately said.
‘You have one month to consider the options and make your submission supporting or opposing the options.’
Submissions responding to the preliminary report should address the options and must be received by the VEC by 5.00 pm Wednesday 24 April. Submissions can be made online at vec.vic.gov.au, by email or by post.
A public hearing will be held at 6.30 pm on Wednesday 1 May at the Rokewood Recreation Reserve, 14 McMillan Street, Rokewood for anyone who has requested to speak in support of their submission. If there are no requests to speak, the hearing will not be held.
The preliminary report is available at vec.vic.gov.au. Copies are also available for inspection at Golden Plains Shire
Council offices.

Bailey Paul and Hudson Palmer swept the U/16's awards with Bailey winning the Bowling and R/u best and fairest, and Hudson cleaning up the batting award as well as the Brad Palmer trophy for best and fairest.
Tizz has made it 3 from 3 with another best and fairest (now to be known as the Aaron Kerr trophy) to add to his collec-tion also collecting the batting and bowling aggregate. John Young was runner up after another strong year with the bat.
The other awards for the night was the "baggy blue" award, this is for the person that "puts the most in, yet takes the least out" and was this year awarded to Andrea Smith. An-drea has worked tirelessly with the junior program and is a well deserved winner.
Also, Blaine Young was awarded the duck award for the Gold and may have had the best quote for the night when
he stated upon receiving his trophy "if you had told me at the start of the year I was go-ing to win this award...... I would have said, yeah, fair enough".
Josh Foley with his R/U best and fairest award and Pete Dunne with his best and fairest award for the Gold side. Josh also picked up the batting as well as the duck award for Blue. Pete also cleaned up the bowling awards and the league average. Sienna Cox was awarded the encourage-ment award for her efforts in both the U/12's and the U/16's.

The 2019 Central Highlands Football and Netball League season has com-menced. Whilst it is always exciting to be kicking off another year, the commence-
ment of our 6th decade as a combined entity sees us
launch an exciting new playing strip. There has been a very positive response to the new jumper design, with the jumpers being launched by the senior players at a function on Sunday March 24
th. It is
an exciting initiative and speaks of the club’s confidence in the future ahead. We are pleased to introduce a number of new recruits to the senior and Under-18 playing lists this year. These include 200cm ruckman Jake Tanner from Terang-Mortlake, Joel Radlof from Dunnstown, Tyler Nunn from Creswick, Hayden Blower, Lachlan Sheppard and Jake Smith from Mt. Clear, Damian Tabakovic and Luke Thomas from Newlyn. A number of players have also joined the club from Smythesdale, including Clay Brook, Jackson Cranny, Bradley Dunbar, Joshua Foley, Jayson Gilbert, Jayson Porter, Josh Rose and Travis Thompson. We welcome all new football and netball players to the club in 2019 and wish them an enjoyable and successful year at the club. The club hosted very competitive football and netball practice matches at Linton against the Belmont Lions on March 16
th, followed by an intraclub football match and
netball matches against the Maryborough Rovers on March 23
rd.
The club is fielding teams in all five football and seven
netball grades for the 2019 season. After playing our first match away against Beaufort, Carngham Linton plays its first home game in Round 2 when we host Hepburn at Linton on Saturday April 6
th.
The club is very pleased to be playing on a freshly resur-faced netball court, which is now in sky blue and terracot-ta colours. Works have progressed on the relocated net-ball changerooms, which will be fully completed in com-ing weeks. We wish to thank the Golden Plains Shire for all their work in providing these fantastic new upgrades. We are again excited to be part of the Auskick program in 2019, while the club will also be introducing the Net-Set-Go program this year. The programs will run over about ten sessions during the first half of the season. For fur-ther details regarding Auskick & Net-Set-Go, please con-tact Junior Directors Tim O’Brien and Ally Clack respec-tively. We are always encouraging more parents, members and supporters to get involved and assist in the many jobs required on game day. If you think you would like to help but are unsure of what is required, club members will be more than happy to train you. To join the playing group or adopt a volunteer role at the club, the following commit-tee members can be contacted for assistance:- Greg Spratling – Football Director (0409 965 894) Tim O’Brien – Junior Football Director (0418 153 528) Ally Clack - Netball Director (0400 250 053)
