Setting sail in thisyear’s AtlanticRally for Cruisers

(ARC), 256 boats raced2,700 nautical milesacross the Atlantic fromthe Canary Islands toSaint Lucia. Organizedby the World CruisingClub, this race is open toseasoned sailors as wellas those who dream oftesting their skills on theopen seas. The ARC,thanks to its solid logis-tics, is the ideal race forfirst-time transatlanticsailors, which was thecase for Sophie Olivaud(technical services direc-

tor for the Collectivity ofSaint Barth) and GéraldDurand who sailedaboard Albacor IV, inRacing Class 2. The twoskippers left Las Palmasin the Canaries onNovember 25, facingstrenuous weather condi-tions. “With 35 knots ofwind, and waves as highas 18 feet, we wereimmediately up to ourelbows,” recalls Oli-vaud. To avoid a depres-sion, they took asoutherly route seekingthe trade winds. “Excepta second depressioncaught us, with winds of

more than 30 knots. With the wind behindus, we experienced somesensational surf andexperienced gusts ashigh as 40 knots, andeven 50 knots one night.Fortunately, everythingturned out okay,” addsOlivaud, who is also theskipper of Les Voiles auFéminin, an all-femaleracing team. And even ifAlbacor IV suffered atorn genoa and severalother small problemswith its sails, the boat

reached Rodney BayMarina in Saint Lucia onDecember 11, after 16days at sea. The firstboat to cross the finishline on December 7,thanks to favorablewinds, was Vaquita, aClass40 with an Austri-an crew. Albacor IV fin-ished fifth in its class, which comprised 14boats. The awards cere-mony, attended byprime minister of SaintLucia, was held onDecember 21.

LES VOILES AU FÉMININ SEEK SAILORSAlbacor IV, which sailed in Les Voiles de SaintTropez last fall as well as the Atlantic Rally forCruisers, is now in Saint Barth, serving as the boatfor Les Voiles au Féminin, a team open to allwomen in Saint Barth. Since its arrival in theWest Indies, Alabcor IV sailed the New Year’sEve Regatta on December 31, finishing third in itsclass. Next up, the Heineken Regatta in SintMaarten, at the end of February, then the 2013edition of Les Voiles de Saint-Barth, April 8-13.“Our idea is to have a strong core team for racing, but also to introduce sailing to any women whoare brave enough to get started. So if you are inte-rested in participating in these regattas, even as abeginner, please feel free to call us,” explains Oli-vaud. Contact Les Voiles au Féminin: 06 90 59 3455 or 06 90 74 18 78.

A majority of the 20 members ofthe association comprised ofhotels and villa rental agenciesvoted to change the name of theorganization to better reflectits diversity.

The name may havechanged, but the goalremains the same: to unitehotel and villa rental profes-sionals in the same quest, that of the developing andpromoting the quality of itsofferings for tourists in respectingthe socio-cultural and environ-mental limitations that character-ize Saint Barthélemy.

“Our association unites the expert-

ise and savoir-faire of its membersfor global reflection on the devel-opment of tourism, and collabo-rates closely with the local com-

munity to defend the interests ofour profession and contribute tothe attractiveness of the island,”says Anne Dentel, president of theHotels and Villas Association ofSaint Barthélemy.

Since it was created in 1984, theassociation has always workedtoward ensuring quality tourismthat meets to needs of a discerning

clientele, while confrontingthe environmental, social, and economic challengesrelated to the evolution of theisland.

“Cooperation among themembers translates to adesire to share information, advise, and help each other in

our activities,” adds Dentel, whonotes it is also important to workclosely with such official servicesas the Territorial Tourism Com-mittee of St Barthélemy.

It’s been anotherwonderful year forthe St Barth Music

Festival, which is cele-brating its 29th anniver-sary this year. Againstall odds, I would ventureto say, as it isn’t alwayseasy to get things doneon an island this size. For example, whenorganizers Frances andJill Debroff arrived thisyear they had to scram-ble to find a new venuefor their dance concertswith the Paris OperaBallet dancers. So thedock in Gustavia onceagain hosted the festival(they presented a rockconcert there last year),and it was a magical

evening after all. Andthe challenges of hous-ing over 75 artists, get-ting opera scores to andfrom the island, storing ababy grand piano, avibraphone, three kettledrums, and two doublebasses from season toseason. But somehow itall comes together andthe audience is treated tosome of the world’s bestmusicians in the infor-mal settings of theisland’s churches. A per-formance of Puccini’sopera, La Boheme, wasa real crowd pleaser lastFriday night with sevenfabulous singers andmaestro Steven Mercu-rio. And the first jazz

concert of the season, featuring the John EllisJazz Quartet at theAnglican Church wasanother winner. Cooljazz played by somereally cool cats, includ-ing percussionist JasonMarsalis, who gives that

vibraphone a real workout. When John Ellisperformed at the festivalin 2008, with his DoubleWide group, one of thestars was harmonicaplayer Grégoire Maret, who is back this year toclose out the festival at

Resident priest the CanonJeannie Loughrey, vestry member Rachel

Barrett-Trangmar, and a groupof determined little girls havelaunched the Baking For Haitiprogram. The idea came aboutas part of a kids’ club that meetson Saturday afternoons at thevicarage of the AnglicanChurch in Gustavia. One Satur-day a month, the girls nowdevote their time to baking suchitems as scones, brownies, andlemon loaf, all of which are avail-able for donations on the secondSunday of each month, in the gar-den of the church, following themorning service.

“Let me tell you the back story,”says nine year-old Salinne Pass-

burg, one of the young bakers, upto her elbows mixing chocolatebrownie dough on the vicarageporch, along with eight year-oldIsabel Bravo-Contreras, her sixyear-old sister Andrea Bravo-Contreras, and another little girlcalled Rachel. “Our goal is toraise 1,000 euros for a school inHaiti. We want them to have mon-

ey for a classroom and teach-ers, and so they can buybooks. People can donate asmuch as they want,” Passburgadds.

The money will be donated tofour elementary schools run bythe St. Etienne Anglican parish,a group trusted by Loughrey asshe has visited them in Haiti. The two initial Sunday bakesales, held in December and

January, raised a total of 427 eurosand $35, which means the youngbakers are about halfway to theirgoal. The next Baking For Haitisale will be on Sunday, February 9,just in time for some Valentine’sDay goodies.

Artist Jean Verrechia invites us todiscover the true nature of flowers:“A scandalous perfume for some, but for most, the obvious power oflove,” he says, describing the color-ful paintings in his exhibit at TheBrigantin as “a continuation of mybouquets of flowers theme, butthese are more abstract, with a dif-ferent graphic style and angle.” There is a certain sense of romanti-cism in these bouquets, and as theartist admits, women are his inspi-ration. “It’s very subtle,” Ver-rechia says. “There is not an actualpresence of women, but a feeling.”His palette comprises a lot of reds, pinks, and blues, with some yellow: “Pure, vibrant colors,” ashe calls them.

Trained in France, Verrechiaworked as an art director, creativedirector, and film director in Paris,Los Angeles, and New York. In2005, he started his new career as apainter, and has shown his work inthe U.S, France, and St Barthelémy,with a permanent show at AlainDucasse in Provence. His work isfound in international collectionsaround the world.Verrechia also serves as producerfor the films made by his son, direc-tor Dylan Verrechia. Their mostrecent feature, "Tierra Madre," haswon more than 10 awards in inter-national festivals.A full-time resident in Saint Barth in1984 (when there were more cactusthan people around his home in

Pointe Milou), Verrechia sees theincredible natural beauty of theisland as a gift that should be appre-ciated. “We need to learn how to seethis beauty and be conscious ofwhat nature gives us,” he says, voic-ing his concerns for the environ-ment and the future of the island. AsLeonardo da Vinci once said, “sim-plicity is the ultimate sophistica-tion,” a philosophy that Verrechiaembraces in life as in art.
