The New Year’s Eve Regatta, asailboat race held annually onDecember 31, signals the end ofone year and the beginning of thenext in Saint Barth. This informalparade of sailboats of all sizes fol-lows an around-the-island course, with staggered starts as of 10am.“The past few years have seenfewer boats participating as theweather has been rough withwinds over 25 knots, and ownersdon’t want to risk any damage totheir boats,” says Mark Del Giu-dice, marina manager at Forty 1°North in Newport, RI, who comesto the island every year to organizethe race, as he has done since itsinception 17 years ago, alongsidethe St Barth Yacht Club and thePort of Gustavia.

This year there could be someexcitement, as it looks as if thebeau t i fu l

Baltic 147, Visione, aReichel/Pugh design, will be backin the race. In fact, Visione holdsthe winning time for the NewYear’s Eve Regatta, having setthe record of 1 hour, 32 minutes, and 7 seconds in 2004. Some pos-sible competition could comefrom Selene, a handsome Swan80 that has also raced in SaintBarth in the past.

Also expected on the starting linethis year is Phaedo, Lloyd Thorn-burg’s high-tech, carbon fiberGunboat 66 that spends the winterin Saint Barth. Phaedo took tophonors in last year’s New Year’sEve Regatta, clocking the fastesttime around the island at 2 hours, six minutes, and 13 seconds. Oth-er entries include Nix, sailing overfrom St Martin, and local boatssuch as Speedy Nemo and Mae

Lia. Still on thefence is IraEpstein, captainof the 65’ clas-sic ketch, LoneFox, who hasoften participat-ed in the past.“This is agood-spiritedlocal event foreveryone inthe yachtingcommunity toshare the lastday of theyear,” hesays. Everybody likes objects;everybody likes differentobjects. It comes down towhat objects you want toput in your art... I likethem all: high, low, used, new, whichever works.—Eden Rock Gallerywith Larry Gagosian ispleased to present anexhibition of tables byUrs Fischer. Born in 1973 in Zurich,Fischer studied at theSchule für Gestaltung,Zurich. He now lives andworks in New York City. His work is included inmany important publicand private collectionsworldwide. Recent majorexhibitions include Kun-sthaus Zurich, Centre

Pompidou, in Paris, Kun-sthalle Wien, Vienna, aswell as the Biennale diVenezia in 2003, 2007,and 2011. Continuously

searching for new sculp-tural solutions, Fischerhas built houses out ofbread; enlivened emptyspace with mechanisticjokes; deconstructedobjects and then replicat-ed them; and transferredothers from three dimen-sions to two and backagain via photographicprocesses. He combinesdaring formal adventuresin space, scale, and mate-rial with a mordant senseof humor. Reinvestingtraditional art historicalgenres (still life, portraits, nudes, landscapes, andinteriors) with an abun-dance of rich and surpris-ing forms—such as castsculptures and assem-blages, paintings, digitalmontages, spatial instal-lations, kinetic objects, and texts—he ceaselesslyexplores the intersection

of art and everyday life. The exhibition title, acollision of furniture andbody parts, gives le corpsexquis another turn of thescrew. The works towhich the title alludes aretables that combine largeresin-coated photomon-tages with multicoloredsteel geometric bases. The jokey surrealist mon-tages juxtapose imagesboth found and manipu-lated—a pair of sausages,a cartoon snail, a graffiti-covered wall, an openmouth, a Hong Kongsupermarket. Blurring thedistinctions between pho-tography, collage, sculp-ture, and furniture, thetables are objects bothaesthetic and useful, fill-ing the gallery with apresence that is at oncevisually arresting andsocially convivial.

Every year since 2002,researchers Yolande and ClaudeBouchon from the University ofthe French Antilles–Guyana havecome to Saint Barth to work withthe Marine Park to study coral andfish in two different locations. Thefirst location is “Baleine de Painde Sucre,” an islet within theMarine Park, while the secondspot is the islet, Coco, located out-side of the Marine Park bound-aries. A comparison of the twolocales allows an evaluation of the

“marine park impact,” and theeffectiveness of the measures ofprotecting the waters and oceanbeds around Saint Barthélemy, within the perimeter of the MarinePark. Using careful measurement,by way of thin, fixed cords, andchecking in exactly the sameplaces it is possible to follow theevolution of coral on one hand, and fish on he other. And it’s real-ly true! The fish are actually morenumerous and larger within theconfines of the Marine Park. Sad-

ly the results for coral are lesspositive, but elements that theMarine Park cannot control, suchas ocean temperatures, also have anegative impact.

As the island's first villa-rental agency nears 40 years inbusiness, a new generation ofleadership has stepped up withplans to move Sibarth forward ina market vibrant with opportunity.CEO Ashley Lacour and Directorof Marketing Kristina Popova saythey intend to take Sibarth towardits fifth decade with a renewedstrength melding the basics of tra-dition with the inspiration of newideas. As the son of Sibarth'sfounders, Brook and RogerLacour, Ashley Lacour has a keensense of the legacy that the com-pany represents. "We've beenstruck by how much the nameSibarth means to many villa own-ers and long-time clients," Lacourexplains. "The trust that my par-ents built over the years is a greatgift, and it gives us a strong baseto do even more in the future."

Upon officially joining the agencyin the spring, Lacour and Popovaset out to find which of the com-pany's current strategies and prac-tices were valuable and whichoffered opportunities for improve-ment. Degrees in business andmarketing from the University ofSussex in the U.K. give them a

professional perspectiveon the task, but theyhave relied also on theadvice and experienceof longtime team mem-bers to heightenSibarth's efficiency. Inparticular, they foundthe unmatched expert-

ise of Villa SpecialistIsabelle Jamin key to reaffirmingthe company's relationships withowners and clients. Now, withSibarth's busiest high-season everin full swing, Lacour and Popovasay they are looking forward to ayear of growth and expansion forwhat is already the largest real-estate staff on St. Barth.

One important change at Sibarthcame in the form of a new brand-ing and marketing push, an effortled by Popova and calling on thetalents of an international teamfor design, photography, andcopywriting. Sibarth's new web-site launched in August, setting ahigh standard for beauty andease-of-use. Clients and ownersalike have welcomed theredesign, according to Popova, finding that the new format, improved search capabilities, andhigh-quality photos and textmake the site a pleasure to use.Additional upgrades are plannedfor the coming year, as the staffdevelop and evaluate potentialinnovations. "This takes carefulplanning," says Popova, "to makesure that any new feature youintroduce is really something theclient wants, and that when itcomes out it works flawlessly."

Central to Lacour and Popova'splan is to expand beyond the tradi-tional role of a rentals agency, maintaining the company's trade-mark personal service while antic-ipating the needs of a fast-grow-ing luxury market. To that end,Sibarth Concierge keeps its fingeron the pulse of the desires andrequirements of visitors to St.Barth. "We try to hold a positionwell ahead of the curve in termsof what new services our clientswant," says Popova.

At the same time, Lacour believesit is important to maintain tradi-tions for those who know theisland well and love it for itsfamiliarity: "Some visitors cometo St. Barth looking for the com-fort of the island the way theyhave known it for many years, sowe try to strike a balance also inour portfolio of villas and in ourapproach." For every client seek-ing a masterpiece of contempo-rary architecture and design,Lacour explains, there is also aclient who looks forward to find-ing the charm of old St. Barth. Inthis respect, Sibarth possesses aperspective and advantage shapedby decades on the island.

"It isn't just that Sibarth has beenhere for so long. What sets usapart is that we have always beenpart of St. Barth and only St.Barth. Our staff all live and workon the island, and our only focusis villa rentals. Our clients say theisland is so special they can'timagine being anywhere else.Well, neither can we."

A warning to those traveling ortransiting through Saint Martin:On Tuesday, December 18, theFrench Institute For Public Healthput our neighboring island on alertfor pre-epidemic levels of denguefever. While this alert does notconcern Saint Barth, in Saint Mar-tin, the most recent data collectedindicated the need to establish astate of vigilance. To destroy thenests of mosquitoes, there are cur-rently pulverizations in the neigh-borhoods most affected. Dengueis a virus most frequently trans-mitted by mosquitoes of theAedes genre, which reproduce notonly in stagnant water but also in

water for flowers, for example. Ifdengue is accompa-nies by fever, headaches, and mus-cular pain, it canalso cause hemor-rhaging, and as aresult, death. Currentclimatic conditionsbeing favorable tothe development ofmosquitoes, the prefecture hasasked the population to put strictmeasures of prevention into effectas quickly as possible. This is themoment when these measures aremost effective in avoiding a trueepidemic of dengue. It is impor-

tant to remember to avoid gettingmosquito bites at any timethroughout the day by using repel-lent sprays or creams. And wear-ing long sleeves and long pants inthe evening.

He’s an accomplished Brooklyn-born artist who hasa truly urban outlook. He lives in Chinatown, wheremany of the same city symbols he soaked up as achild reappear in his daily landscape, and as a resultin some of his paintings. But Victor Matthews hasalso enjoyed spending time in Saint Barth over thepast twenty years, and now has his first solo showon the island at Space SBH, in the Carré D’Or inGustavia, through January 5.

Matthews has work in numerous private collections(Russell Simmons, Brice & Helen Marden,Francesco & Alba Celmente, Vera List, NathanielRothchild, President Mogae of Botswana, RonaldPerelman, and Forest Whitaker, among othersincluding Salman Rushdie, who bought a largewhite painting this year) and has enjoyed a numberof solo shows in galleries around the world as wellas an exhibit at the 48th Venice Biennale. The workshown in Saint Barth comes from two series, TheVortex series, and the Antarctica paintings, whichelicit equally strong, if different emotional responses.

The whiteness of the Antarctica paintings (oil oncanvas) has a pureness to it, while at closer inspec-tion the images are those city symbols thatMatthews is so attached to, from fire hydrants andbicycles to water towers, pigeons, and the Brook-lyn Bridge. “The whiteness is like a cleansing ofthe urban environment,” he says. “It represents achange in the seasons, and a feeling of going toanother planet. There is sense of purity and cool-ness.” In contrast, many of the Vortex paintings aretornados of bright colors, or swirls of black andwhite that represent a sense of endlessness but alsoexude visual excitement.

Barefoot in the gallery, Matthews has kicked offhis city shoes and morphed into the Saint Barthvibe. Having studied art and design, Matthewslearned from his friends in the art world: “KeithHaring taught me how to stretch canvas, FrancescoClemente taught me about watercolors, I love thepigments he uses, and I was inspired by my motherwho could paint and draw,” Matthews explains.

“Artists have to believe in themselves and be origi-nal,” he says. “Paint from their guts.”

The artist has developed an ongoing relationshipwith the Space gallery, which will represent him atthe next Venice Biennale. “I am turning 50 in Janu-ary so this is a big year for me,” adds Matthews, who notes that in Saint Barth, as in New York, he isan early riser, up by 6am, working early and takingadvantage of the light that streams into his top floorstudio in the city, or walking on the beach in SaintBarth creating a vortex of seaweed in the sand.

Matthew’s work is compelling and surprising. Hisfriend Russell Simmons sums it up by saying (abouthis art collection), “My absolute favorite is a paintingby Victor Matthews, a 60-inch by 72-inch oil andgraphite on canvas called "Antarctica." It is breath-taking. Each time I look at it I see something new.”

Music fans in Saint Barth areliable to have run across RobbTito, generally called just Robb. This season he is singing solo, including Sunday brunches at LeToiny, where his soft singingstyle lends itself perfectly to therecently renovated dining room.

He is also promoting his newCD, From St. Barth To London, which was released earlier thismonth on the CD Baby label.

Tito refers to his music as aninvitation to travel, and he takeshis audiences on the road throughhis varied repertory of worldmusic, singing covers as well asoriginal songs. In 2006, hemoved from the South of Franceand settled in Saint Barth, acoustic guitar in hand, and hisreputation began to spread.
