Drug Lords should be called Drug Scum, said Mountain Rise Sta-tion Commander Brigadier Fran-cis Bantham in a fi ery speech at the launch of Operation Sakuma Sakhe in Truro Hall on Wednesday.

Lord is the name we use to praise. Why are we praising these people who are killing our children? They are scum! They are far from lords, bellowed Bantham.

She was speaking against the social ills that have engulfed the northern areas. Ban-tham, passionate about the eradication of social ills, particularly drug abuse, urged locals to be aware of their own children as well as others who may be using drugs.

Education is key. You need to learn about drugs and know what they look like so that you can identify what drugs your kids may be using. We need to claim back

our children, said Bantham. She had the packed Truro Hall clapping

and cheering her on when she vowed that Mountain Rise Police Station has declared a zero tolerance against drugs in the area.

Help me help you, so that we may get rid of these drug scums, she said.

A substantial reward of R10 000 is being offered to anyone with infor-mation that leads to the successful arrest and conviction for those who have stolen the Raisethorpe Catho-lic Churchs pure gold ciborium (a goblet shaped vessel used for Holy Communion bread and wine).

The churchs 67-year-old cibo-rium that has gems on the stem and base of the cup was stolen from the church in March this year. Accord-ing to police, the pure gold antique is worth approximately R25 000.

We are pleading with the rob-bers or anyone who has seen this cup to please return it to the church, even if it is done anony-mously, said chairman of coun-cil Kelvin Peters. The ciborium has been a part of the church since 1946.

Police are making an appeal to anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects or the items to contact the Inves-

Reward to catch gold chalice thieves Kailene Pillay

    Kailene Pillay

When Father Alfred Igwebuike of Our Lady of Health Cath-olic Church in Raisethorpe walked into church for Tuesday morning mass, he certainly did not expect to nd their most valuable possession to be stolen.

The resident priest, Father Alfred expressed his deep sorrow and anger after the church had been broken into and robbed of the pure gold ciborium (a hand-crafted chalice, a goblet shaped vessel used during Holy Communion ).

They have desecrated our church and disturbed the resting place of a lost loved one, Father Alfred told Public Eye on Tues-day morning after discovering that one of the memorial plaques were used to break the stained glass window of the church to gain entry.

The ch rchs 67 ear old cibori m as

a part of the church since 1946.

Church of cials gath-ered on Tuesday morning to inspect the aftermath of the robbery. According to them, the intruders seem to have jumped over the wall from the parking area of Kara Nichas which is adjacent to the church on the busy Chota Motala Road (Old Greytown Road).

There were shoe prints found in the gar-

they were looking for valuables or maybethey just needed something to break the window. The plaque was found lying by the broken window, said Peters.

The thieves broke the doors of the small sacred storage place, the tabernaclwhich is used to house the ciborium as

well as the Holy Communion wine and wafers.

According to Father Alfred, some of the churchs sound equipment was also stolen. They broke the cabinet and took the amplier speaker and three microphones ith

The Arya Samaj SA hosted a dinner attended by the whos who in the religious and cultural world at the Kendra last week, to raise funds for a World Vedic Confer-ence to be held later this year. In a rare gathering of so many lead-ers from different Hindu faith based organisations in one place, all pledged support for the confer-ence. The event aims to address contemporary social issues and search for practical solutions based on the Vedic scriptures.

The Vedas (meaning knowl-edge), reputed to be the oldest scriptures in the library of man-kind, offer advice and guidance to all humanity. South Africa is to be the fi rst country outside India to host the World Vedic Conference.

Conference topics such as domestic violence, prostitution, drug abuse, neglect of the aged, same sex marriages, green issues etc. will be discussed along with topics like the God particle, Vedic mathematics; astronomy versus astrology and reincarnation.

A key objective of the Con-ference is to mobilise support to address burning issues affecting the community across the religious divide.

The 1 000 Men against Domestic Violence March is planned for the morning. A com-munal Agni hotra (Fire cer-emony) will take place in the afternoon where everybody will participate.

The day closes with an acclaimed laser show from India

on the tireless campaign of Swami Dayanand (founder of the Arya Samaj) against superstition, oppression of women and the pro-motion of an enlightened, scien-tifi c and rational view of the Vedic religion.

Sanskrit scholar and Confer-ence Director, Dr Bisraam Ram-bilass, says the challenge to host a conference of this nature and mag-nitude with limited resources is huge but there is enough goodwill and enthusiasm in the community to make it all possible.

The conference is scheduled to take place from 28 November to 1 December 2013.

turned upside down, I didnt know where tp go to. One day I was listening to a radio station I heard

someone testify about Solomon, who helps people, in darkness to light of happiness.

I contacted him to book an appointment , he told me to come after two days, I was scared to go there but when I arrived, I found a lot of white and indians waiting to get help. I went to the shrine, he charged

me R100 to read my fortune. I was touched and grateful when he picked every point of my life, he

also picked up my sickness that I have, all in a dish of water. He prayed for me and washed my feet with

oil and water then he blessed me and told me within 3 days time, everything in my life will fall into place

Dining in the dark - a light hearted glimpse into the world of the blind

Dining in the dark was an eye opener that guests at Saturday nights Natal Blind and Deaf Soci-ety dinner are unlikely to forget

in a long while. Apart from spill-ing drinks over and losing cutlery, guests had the fi rst hand experi-ence of living in a world of dark-ness.

Natal Blind and Deaf Society, Pietermaritzburg Region chairman David Gengan said apart from anything else the expe-rience provided people with sight a glimpse into a world very few actu-ally understand. He used the occasion to welcome retired constitutional judge Zac Yacoob as the Socie-tys new president.

The keynote speaker was former Arthur Blax-all pupil Dr. Praveena Sukhraj-Ely who is a senior advocate at the national department of justice. She Gave a hilari-ous yet poignant account of her experiences.

At university, as I would walk past people

would stop talking to each other and go silent. It was diffi cult but I also realized that people need time to adjust. There are many things we take for granted, like even smiling at one another. Remem-ber for us as blind people we dont know whether a person is smil-ing or notwhatever you do dont leave a blind person without say-ing goodbye instead of waving. If you dont say goodbye Ill think youre still there and will end up talking to myself, said Sukhraj-Ely drawing much laughter from the audience.

She encouraged society to embrace the blind and provide room for partially sighted and blind people to make a full contri-bution to society.

Guests at the dinner were blind-folded and led into a darkened hall for the dinner which was a four-course meal prepared by SA Master Chef Runner- up, Mani-sha Naidoo. Using only the senses of touch, taste, smell and sound, guests had to not only navigate the

meal but use their senses to nav-igate socially with people they could not see at their table.

City doctor Baboo Akoo who is fairly aware of issues affecting the blind having worked closely with the International Blind Madres-sah in Cedara described the din-ner as a remarkable experience. A simple thing such as eating can be so diffi cult if you cannot seeI always say that there are none so blind as those who refuse to see, said Akoo.

City speaker Babu Baijoo said the Natal Blind and Deaf Society

really thought outside the box by arranging the event.

Hazel Rajah said the evening enabled her to respond better to blind people.

I thoroughly enjoyed the event. It was a very good eye-opener and I have learnt to appre-ciate the blind. Dinner in the dark enabled me to become much more attentive to people and my sur-roundings. I strongly believe that the community needs to get involved with the Natal Blind and Deaf Society and give back in some way or the other, she said.

We identifi ed several crches in the area and found that this one needs help and support. Our Sta-tion, together with the help of a group of ladies from The Saint Vincent de Paul Society based at

Raisethorpe Catholic Church have decided to donate these items to uplift the community. We want to show people around that we are not just fi ghting crime in the area but are also concerned about the well being of the community, something called Social Crime Prevention, said Reverend Sean

Singh, also a member of the SAPS Bishopstowe.

Coordinator of the sewing and preparation of the blankets and pillows, Thelma Rajah, said that she and a group of ailing pension-ers meet weekly at the church to sew and knit various items to be sold.

We usually sell what we make but when we heard of the plight of this crche, then we immediately began sewing and stuffi ng pillows and we bought material to make the blankets for them. It is all done with love, said Rajah.

A new state of the art cardiac machine to assist doctors perform-ing complex heart procedures was handed over at Greys Hospital last week Fri-day.

The Philips Allura Xper FD 10/10 which cost about R15 million was shipped to the country from The Netherlands and installed by local engineers in May. It is the fi rst of its

kind in a government hospital in the city.According to Dr Ben Bilence, chief exec-

utive offi cer at the hospital, the machine will assist doctors and staff of the catheter labo-ratory when treating and examining people with heart conditions.

The fi rst patient on the new unit was examined on Wednesday 5 June. The equip-ment was used to generate a coronary angio-gram using X rays to trace the movement of

a special injected dye as blood fl ows through the arteries in the heart.

According to Her-bert Oberrainer, a modality sales spe-cialist at Philips Healthcare, the machine greatly reduces X-Ray doses to which patients and staff are exposed.

This machine has new intervention tools like a Stent-Boost which is a simple, cost effec-tive tool to enhance stent visualization in the coronary arteries. It is also equipped with a 160KVA UPS, tp ensure continuous power to the system for about 20 min-utes in the case of a power failure.

THE CLA 45 AMG follows the philosophy of thesuccessful CLS 63 AMG - the trend-setting four-doorhigh-performance coupe. It offers a unique com-bination of a fascinatingly sporty driving experience, extravagant design and maximum individuality. Mer-cedes-AMG appeals to the tech-savvy and flexibleattitude to life adopted by both target groups byoffering a wide range of equipment, colour andmaterial options for the new models.

The CLA 45 AMG will be shown at this year'sJohannesburg's International Motor Show in Octoberand released for sale from November. Pricing isexpected to be above that of the A 45 AMG and willbe announced closer to the time.

    A 45 AMG

Goes fortop spotBy Mark Jones from Germany

The Mercedes Benz A 45 AMG has to be themost anticipated hot hatch of the year, ifnot the most anticipated car of the year, and this of course means that it has some seriousiving up to the hype created to achieve this in

re a l i t y.To put this statement to test, we were invited to

drive the A 45 AMG and the more niche CLA 45AMG in and around the Bad Driburg area ofGermany. We were let loose on the all new BilsterBerg Drive Resort track in the A 45s. Bilster Berg isno stroll in the park, the track is 4.2km long and has19 corners, many of them blind and weaved betweensome serious changes in elevation.

Mercedes-AMG is embarking on a new era, andfor the first time in the company's 45 year old history, hey are offering an AMG car with a four-cylinder

engine and at a price point that sees the A 45 AMGbeing offered at R555,000 when it gets here inSeptember. And typical of the brand, it is not justsome make do attempt, they have brought the world'smost powerful and fuel efficient 2.0-litre turbo motoro the hot hatch table.

The basis for these impressive figures is providedby the high-tech package put together by Mercedes-AMG. As a high performance engine belonging tohe BlueDIRECT family, the AMG 2.0-litre four-

cylinder turbo engine features spray guided directpetrol injection via piezo injectors positioned cen-rally in the four combustion chambers with annjection pressure of 200 bar.

The combination of multiple fuel injection andmultiple spark ignition improves fuel utilisation andncreases thermodynamic efficiency substantially, eading to low exhaust emissions and a claimed

combined fuel consumption of only 6.9 litres /100km. Best I saw was around 10 litres / 100km.

Other basic technical highlights include a gravity-

die sandcast all-aluminium crankcase, weight-op-timised crank assembly with forged steel crankshaftand forged pistons with friction-optimised pistonrings, NANOSLIDE cylinder wall technology, air-to-water intercooler, alternator management andECO start/stop function.

The numbers on paper are enough to make all theother hot hatches sit up and take notice. Boosting aheady 1.8 bar at peak, you get a maximum output of265kW of power and up to 450Nm of torque, whichtranslates into a supercar like 133kW per litre to goBMW and Audi bashing with. Okay whether this is100% true will obviously depend what happenswhen we finally get the A 45 AMG in SA and I canrun it against my VBox at Gerotek, but it sure felt upto the task and very impressive on first intro-duction.

I say this because you are always expecting somewheelspin that will rob you of time, but the per-formance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive

system fitted as standard takes care of this in astraight line and when through the twisties or even onthe track. The claim is 0-100km/h in a mere 4.6seconds and an electronically limited top speed of250km/h. Add the AMG Driver's Package forR22,900 and the fun will only stop at 270km/h.

And for those that want to know, the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system is variable, with 100% powergoing to the front wheels when there is no loss of gripand in normal everyday driving situations, but hit thego pedal hard and up to 50% of the power is movedto the back wheels where you now have 50:50 ratiohatch that knows how to get the power down onto thet a r.

Making sure you don't miss any gear changes, anAMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports trans-mission comes as standard. You have three drivemodes, Controlled Efficiency, Sport and then Man-ual, and most importantly for the off the line times, you have Race Start too. I used what I called Comfort

mode for normal driving, but the lure of Manualmode was too much for me most of the time, especially as the cars were running the optionalR6,500 AMG Sports Exhaust, and this meant someseriously politically incorrect crackling and poppingwas to be heard every time you down shifted or upshifted in this mode.

You also get the AMG Electronic Stability Pro-gram that is configured in three stages - "ESP ON","SPORT Handling Mode" and "ESP OFF" - sodriving to work is as easy as going to the odd trackday. Talking of that, the ride of the A 45 is a firm ashell, but you almost kind of expect this in a highperformance car of this calibre. The slightly morefamily orientated CLA 45 on the other hand is a bitsofter. You can't but wish that when in Comfort modethe A 45 would just settle a little more and keep thehardcore stuff for when it is required.

This would result in a better all round car in myopinion, especially since I am sure most owners aregoing to opt for the R8,500 AMG Performancesuspension and lightweight 19 inch wheels that willadd either R7,900 for grey or R10,500 for matt blackto your bill, and further stiffen up the daily ride.

Inside too, the A 45 AMG boasts hallmarkMercedes-AMG dynamic spirit and exclusivity.High-quality touches include sports seats finished inARTICO man-made leather /DINAMICA microfi-bre with red contrasting topstitching and red seatbelts, a multifunction sports steering wheel with shiftpaddles along with instrument panel trim in carbonfibre look. Going one better than this though, our testcars had the cool optional R19,900 AMG Per-formance seats fitted.

If you still want more, you can always opt for theEdition 1 derivative, pictured above, for a furtherR69,000 over the suggested standard retail price andget many of the options spoken about thrown into thepackage.

Its easy to get caught up in the temper of nitropowered radio controlled car racing as thesehighly technical machines scream around thetrack at 125km/h.

This weekend the South African Championshipsfor Fuel powered Radio Controlled Cars takes placeat the permanent race circuit alongside the SouthwayShopping Centre in Rossburgh.

Those with a passion for motorsport will find thesenitro/methanol powered cars are a far cry from toys,

being capable of 0 to 100km/h in under two seconds. These machines rev to 44,000rpm and, as said, havea top speed of around 125km/h.

The cars are four-wheel-drive and are fitted withdisc brakes, two speed gearboxes and fully in-dependent suspension systems, making them as hi-tech as full size race cars.

Top Durban drivers Andrew Plint and DaveWiseman, will be well to the fore with Gautengs topdriver, Wayne Joelson and Borders champs, Darryn

Green and Dawie van der Merwe, expected toprovide the stiffest opposition for the local boys.

The programme for Saturday, 29 June, starts at

8am and finishes around 3pm. Sunday has the longerendurance races with fuel stops, tyre changes and pittactics. Racing on Sunday will also start at 8am.

    Audi Q5 3.0 TDI SE S tronic

    An Audi-rageousprice tag

    By James Siddall

Cars are highly emotive things - so nat-urally one can fall in love with themi n s t a n t l y.A good example is the Golf 7 TSI DSG that I

had on test earlier this year. Even before drivingit, I knew it would be simply superb. It didn'tdisappoint.

Other cars I warm to after a couple of days in aslow-burn love affair.

And yet others I'm instantly attracted to, butthe infatuation quickly fades.

Take the sleek, slick Audi Q5 3.0 TDI SE Stronic here, with its quattro drive and turbodieselp ow e r p l a n t .

The Q5 has just been uprated and upgradedwith some mild interior and exterior enhance-ments, and this familiar machine includes a newelectromechanical power-steering setup, whilefuel consumption has been cut by up to 15percent.

The six-model range also comes with directfuel injection and a start-stop system as standardon all models, and I was pleased to get the range-topper for a week.

I liked it too, what with its 180kW and 580Nmon tap, as well as a top speed of 225km/h, and anability to surge from rest to 100km/h in a claimed6.5 seconds, with the whole show runningthrough a smooth seven-speed S stronic self-s h i f t e r.

But the affair quickly palled. I did a lot ofrunning around in the Q5, and soon realised thatwhile the number of buttons and knobs in thecockpit has been slashed, as is the case with most

Audis, so making for an elegant-looking area, this comes at a cost. One night I almost crashedthe Q5 because of this. Why?

Well, the multi-function rotary knob that gov-erns the fan speed of the climate control is thesame that governs the temperature control.

To switch between those two functions on thatrotary knob, you have to activate a separateswitch.

And it was while fumbling for this separateswitch so as to lower the temperature whilewafting along a Durban night-time freeway at120km/h that I almost wandered into another laneand messily met up with a heavy-duty truck.

And it took me two days just to work out howto play a CD in this "mid-sized" SUV, as itsmakers term it.

This could be vaguely excusable, and I supposemost owners would become accustomed to theintricacies of the controls after a bit.

Then I saw the price and the initial infatuationfurther chilled, like it would when one's partnerstarts developing the verbal equivalent of diff-whine.

For this machine Audi charges R637,500. TheQ5 I drove weighed in at R727,400 - a price thatcaused my jaw to take up residence on my chest -thanks to the addition of optional extras such as

a navigation system (R22,200), and a panoramicglass sunroof (R18,100). Even the admittedlyattractive 20-inch wheels were anotherR16,030.

For that price I'd want a Jeep Grand Cherokee3.0L CRD Overland which carries great gravitasand comes with most imaginable luxuries asstandard - down to a heated steering-wheel andclimatised front seats. And it costs about R35,000less than the optioned Q5 here, while unlike theAudi it also has low-range and is a proper off-road machine. But that's a silly, subjective thing

to say as the Grand Cherokee is a different classof car.

Instead, in much the same category you can geta Kia Sorento CRDi AWD - I have one in mydriveway right now. It packs a little less firepowerthan the Audi, and while the German vehiclesounds a bit like a WW2 torpedo boat underacceleration, the Kia sounds more like a lowingcow when pressed hard.

But the 2.2-litre turbodiesel Kia is superblybuilt, starts at a whisker shy of R400,000 - orR480 000 for the exceptionally well-equippedseven-seater version that I have on test right now- and even comes with a five-year warranty. Theonly thing it lacks is the Ingolstadt rings on thegrille.

So. Nice car Audi. And hopefully no ownerswill end up assaulting that crushingly frustratingcentre console with a brick. Pity about the pricethough.

  • 5PIETERMARITZBURG 28 June 2013 Road ReportKia Optima

All this and beauty tooBy Gavin Foster

After living with the Kia Optima for a weeklast year I gave it a - for me - rave review, with my only criticism being that it was letdown a little by its 131kW / 231Nm four-cylinderengine. It wasn't a slug, though, with a claimedop speed of 210km/h and a 0-100km/h sprintime of 9,5 seconds.

When you consider that the average SouthAfrican motorist has never been quicker than180km/h in his or her life and doesn't give a fig aboutwhat speed-crazy motoring journalists say, the carstill delivered acceptable performance.

This year, after testing the car exhaustively underSouth African conditions with local fuel, the Kiafactory gave the South African importers the go-ahead to bring in the car with their new GDIGasoline Direct Injection) 2.4-litre naturally-as-

pirated engine that burns cleaner, uses less fuel andups power and torque to 148kW and 250Nme s p e c t ive l y.

This means that the car now has the steak to gowith the sizzle provided by its stunning looks, goodhandling and excellent build quality. The factoryclaims the same 210km/h top speed as they did withast year's engine, but makes no claim as to

acceleration time to 100km/h. My seat-of-the-pantsaccelerometer tells me that it's considerably quickerhan the older engined version though.

The Kia Optima is basically a superb expensiveGerman luxury car without the "German" andexpensive" bits. It's solidly screwed together andhe quality of the interior fittings is better than is

often found in real German cars. It's also very generously equipped and many of

he features that come standard in the Korean carwould cost you tens of thousands of rands as optionsn its rivals.

These include a rear view camera that displays inhe interior mirror, auto headlight control, auto

on/off self-levelling Xenon headlights with wash-ers, electrically heated and cooled ventilated leather

seats with two memory functions and electricallyadjustable lumbar support, a massive panoramicsunroof, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, park dis-tance sensors for when you don't trust the camera, proximity key locking and starting button, anInfinity six CD sound system with Bluetooth and allthe other communication gubbins, a glovebox that'scooled by the aircon system, and an alphabet soup ofelectronic driving aids such as ABS, EBD, NAS,ESC, TC and HAC (Hill-start Assist Control). There's a very short option list with just one item -metallic paint.

The interior of the Optima is attractive and exudesquality. There's loads of space all round and the bootis truly enormous. The car is available only with asix-speed auto transmission with steering-wheelpaddle shift for when you're in the mood, and theengine and gearbox combination work well to-gether. Sound levels are low with the exception ofsome tyre rumble from the low-profile 225'45-R18rubber. Fuel consumption was 11,4l/100km aroundtown and 8,3 at 110-120km/h on the freeway.

There is one decidedly Germanic element in thenew Kia. It was designed by Peter Schreyer, who leftVW / Audi after three decades to kick the Koreans'design department into shape. I don't usually com-ment much on styling because I realise everybodyhas their own opinion on what looks good, but Ireckon Herr Schreyer earned every penny he'll everget from Kia just for his work on this one model.

Ten years ago the marketing guys at SouthAfrican Hyundai and Kia launches regularlystressed that their Korean management had Toyotafirmly in their sights in terms of quality and value. Ithink they've already achieved that, and the Ger-mans had better start watching their mirrors. TheKia Optima is in my book a very worthwhilealternative for anybody looking at the entry-level CClass, A4 or 3 Series offerings.

The Kia comes with a five-year/150,000kmwarranty and a five-year /90,000km service plan. Itretails at R336,995.

  • 6 PIETERMARITZBURG 28 June 2013Road ReportGWM H5 2.0 VGT 4X4 Auto

    Bargain-basement brillianceBy James Siddall

Of all the overused, insidious marketingand advertising terms out there, none isquite so guaranteed to have one dis-creetly vomiting in one's mouth as "bar-gain."

As in "it's a bargain!" and derivatives thereof. It's a vile and ghastly term. And yet when it comes to Great Wall Motors'

H5, I can think of no better way to sum up thismachine.

Last week an H5, in 2.0 VGT 4X4 Auto guise, making it the top-range model in the six-vehicleline-up, took up residence on my driveway. It wasfactory-fresh too, with but 86km on the clock.

Now bear in mind that this is no cut-rateChinese machine using old technology anddodgy, derived styling. Rather, it's a handsome, imposing, large machine with a turbodiesel pow-erplant that's developed and designed by GWMt h e m s e l ve s .

Output is a credible 110kW at 4,000rpm, witha maximum torque of 310Nm at 1,800 to2,800rpm, which translates into lots of low-downlugging power. Running through a five-speedauto gearbox, expect a zero-to-100km/h time of13.5 seconds, and a top end of 165km/h. Fuelconsumption is pegged at seven litres per 100km,and kudos to GWM for pointing out that this wasachieved "under controlled testing."

It's a spacious machine, too, with leg room forbasketball players in the back, while equipmentlevels are high. Expect auto lights, electricwindows, an electrically operated driver's seat, and a radio/CD/DVD/MP3 player with steeringwheel audio controls, while the seats are coveredin durable leather. You also get a very handyreversing camera, Reverse Park Assist, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Ride quality is pliant. The big H5 wafts alongwith almost the same soul-soothing comfort as alarge luxury car, while handling is rather com-

    mendable, considering it's a full-size SUV, withall-wheel-drive available at the flick of a but-ton.

And there's power-steering, of course. But it'sjust too light at speed. A speed-sensitive set-upwould be preferable.

But what about those bugbears that have givenso many Chinese (and Indian) cars an awfulname, to wit, build quality, safety levels, andsmell? Yes, smell. I'll expand in a second.

Well, first, off, the H5 - like all GWM productsI've encountered in the past year or two - is quiteimpeccably assembled. No panel gaps. No loosetrim. Just the sort of solidity that you'd expectfrom a manufacturer that in only a few short yearshas exponentially increased the quality of itsve h i c l e s .

As for safety, the H5 gets ABS with EBD,airbags, and child-seat ISOFIX fixtures. Moreimportantly, it has been awarded an AustralianANCAP 4-star rating. That makes me feel somuch happier throwing this big machine intocorners.

As for smell, I've had at least a couple ofChinese cars with the most awful interior pong. The new MG6 I had a while ago (and yes, it's nowChinese-owned and built) had such an over-powering reek in the cabin that I had to drive withthe windows open. The H5 - and remember I gotmine with just 86km on the clock - had awonderfully neutral interior atmosphere.

But I do digress. I was getting to the price. The H5 range starts at R226,900. And the top-

end model here? It clocks in at R292,900, whichnot only causes disbelief among onlookers, but ifyou care to do a bit of comparative shopping, makes it possibly the most outrageous auto-motive bargain on our market. Plus you get athree-year/100,000km warranty and two-year/24-hour Roadside Assist service.

And you wonder why I expect to keep thisparticular H5 as a long-term test vehicle

The Sabha hall will be col-ourfully decorated on Sunday, 7th July as dev-otees of the Sabha prepare to host the sacred Hawan dedicated to Lord Shiva. During the fi re rit-ual, the Maha Mrityunjaya man-tra (Om tryambakam yajamahe ...)

will be recited 108 times for each of the 9 sessions in the programme and on each recital, participants of the hawan will make their oblations of ghee offerings into the sacred fi re.

The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra is an ancient Sanskrit mantra chanted to purify the karmas of the soul at a

deep level. It is said to be very ben-efi cial for mental, emotional, and physical health. The great Rishis and Yogis propagated the chanting of the mantra and have said that it is extremely potent when chanted in large groups.

The organizing committee of the Pietermaritz-burg Sanathan Ved Dharam Sabha have drawn up a special programme for the Maha Mrityunjaya Mass Hawan to be held on Sunday, 7th July 2013. The popular Over The Top Nashua Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business Enterprise Relay is back on July 19 at the Royal Showgrounds. It is once again a chance for local businesses and their staff, clients, friends and families to get together, let their hair down, and have fun in the winter sun.

The event is open to everyone who is happy to be a little over the top and corporate/school/club/family team entries are encouraged. Enter your team and book a corporate marquee as soon as possible to ensure a good spot on the main arena. Based on last years shenanigans, the event is guaranteed to be fun, is great for team building, inter-company networking and brand awareness. So popular was it last year that some teams asked for it to be staged twice a year! A local is lekker theme will dominate proceedings this year, but in the spirit of being otherwise, the PCB will be going Irish.

As always, sponsor support is vital to make this event possible as they, at the end of the day, subscribe to the importance of building good relationships in our community. Sponsors this year include Nashua Maritzburg, Capital Newspapers,

Royal Agricultural Society and Thule Towing Systems.

Entry forms are available from the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business at 033 345 2747, [email protected] .

It is with a great sense of loss and sadness that the Sports Veterans Asso-ciation pay tribute to the late Ganasen Gunston Padayachee who died of a heart attack earlier this month (on 18 June).

Padayachee left behind a proud legacy of ubuntu, empathy, self-lessness, humility and industry. He lived his life to the full and touched so many people during his time here with us. He was a courageous champion and superb role model for the youth. We all have a whole lot of memories that we will always carry with us memories that defi ned Paday-achee; memories we will always hold dear.

Born on 2 June 1960, Paday-achee was an educator, sports-man, organ donor recipient, cancer survivor and international sports medallist. He was fi rst selected to represent South Africa in 1998 at the World Transplant Games that took place in Budapest in Hun-gary. Although he fi nished fourth overall at that games, he broke the World Record in the 5 km walk. He continued to represent the

country, captaining the South Afri-can team at fi ve world events.

Padayachee was honoured by the SVA at its Awards Presentation Function in January this year for his fortitude, his faith, his magnif-icent courage and his insistence on simplicity in all things. Paday-achee was a talented all-round sportsperson. His sporting prow-ess was noted at school where he excelled at all codes of sport, especially in athletics. He was an athletic sprint champion. Paday-achee graduated as an Educator from the University of Durban-Westville as a Physical Education Specialist. He taught at Wood-lands Secondary School before his promotion as Head of Department to Kharina Secondary School.

Padayachee was also a very accomplished sports adminis-trator. He held many positions of trust, confi dence and honour. His devotion to the South Afri-can Transplant Sports Association was strong and impassioned. He was a life member of that organ-isation. At the time of his pass-ing, Padayachee was the Chairper-son of the KZN Transplant Sports

Association. He played a major role in realising his dream to bring the World Transplant Games to South Africa. These games will take place in Durban in just over a months time.

Padayachee is at peace now and free of pain. He lived a life of ser-vice to his profession, his family, his friends and his community. He was in the true sense of the term a peoples person. Padayachee was a man of rare personal attraction, of a genial, generous nature, and full of kindness. We salute him!

Local golden boy and former Pirates player Bryce Moon has joined Mamelodi Sundowns.

The signing was confi rmed by the Pretoria based outfi t this week.

The Woodlands-born former Bafana Bafana defender made an unexpected but expensive move when he joined one of the rich-est teams in the country and PSL giants from Bidvest Wits.

    It is understandable why his

imminent new move has been cel-ebrated in local soccer circles, especially around Pietermaritz-burg.

City Of Choice spokesman and admirer of Moon, Brian Zuma, said I wish him good luck and one day he will go back to the national team. Hes a disciplined boy and down to earth. This boy belongs to one of the big teams in the country, said Zuma.

Supporters from Edendale, Eastwood, Woodlands, Northdale

    as well as local

municipal councillors sent con-gratulatory text messages or con-tacted his father, Patrick

Bryce is one of our local well disciplined boys who always hoist the City Of Choice fl ag high. We are proud of him, said former Pietermaritzburg and District Soc-cer Association President, Joe Gengan.

Moon thanked those who wished him well..

In April,he was found guilty of culpable homicide by the Rand-burg Magistrates Court relating to the death in 2009 of pedestrian Mavis Ncube in Katherine Street, Sandton.

He was fi ned R60 000 or two monthsimprisonment. Magistrate Vincent Pienaar also suspended Moons drivers licence for six months.

Moon was acquitted of other charges of murder, attempted

murder, drunk driving and reck-less or negligent driving.
