Sony Music to launch Soundtrack For A Century Sony Music Entertainment is preparing to launch

one of the most comprehensive music collections

ever assembled, coinciding with the turning of the century. Soundtrack For A Century should be ready

for release for the holiday season. The massive set will include 547 songs on 26

CDs, as well as a 308 -page, four-colour coffee table book, rare photos, historic artifacts, artist

memorabilia, and comprehensive essays by award - winning writers. As of now, Sony Canada had still not

announced a retail price for the entire set. However, the individual double -CDs from each genre and era

will be available separately. Pop Music: The Early Years (1890-1950) will

feature some of the earliest recorded music, right

up to the Sinatra/Columbia era. Sony Classical: Great Performances (four CDs), will cover the gamut of

Sony's classical catalogue, from 1903-1998. Jazz: The Definitive Performances, begins with a 1917

performance by The Original Dixieland Jazz Band, and ends with a '95 recording by Wynton Marsalis.

Folk, Gospel & Blues: Will The Circle Be Unbroken features legendary performers such as

Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen and

MCA/Universal to release new Hendrix Xmas single

Experience Hendrix/MCA Records have announced the upcoming release of Jimi Hendrix: Merry

Christmas & Happy New Year, a new three -track CD single containing two versions of a previously

unreleased medley of holiday standards, and a formerly out -of -print song. The single is set for a

November 16 release. In December of '69, Hendrix and his Band Of Gypsys (bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles) rehearsed and recorded a medley of three

holiday favourites, which they in turn performed at

a quartet of New Year's concerts at Fillmore East. The band recorded a medley of Little Drummer Boy,

Silent Night and Auld Lang Syne, which appears on this CD in two versions (4:28, and an extended

7:25). Also, during the 1968 sessions for Electric Ladyland, Hendrix and the Experience (bassist Noel

Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell) recorded a version of the Three Little Bears. Although the song wasn't released on Ladyland, it did later appear on

War Heroes, a 1972 posthumous release. This is the first time the song will appear on CD.

Stevie Ray Vaughan. Country: The American Tradition will cover a litany of country stars, including Roy Acuff, Gene Autry, Bill Monroe,

Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash, George Jones and Willie Nelson, right up to Mary Chapin Carpenter, Patty Loveless and Dixie Chicks.

Movie Music: The Definitive Performances features soundtrack hits such as Singin' In The Rain, Lullaby Of Broadway, Mrs. Robinson, The Way We

Were, Footloose, Streets Of Philadelphia, Men In Black and My Heart Will Go On. Broadway: The Great Original Cast Recordings features theatrical

classics like Some Enchanted Evening, The Rain In Spain, Tonight, My Favourite Things, Cabaret, and What I Did For Love.

Pop Music: The Golden Era (1951-75) begins with Sinatra's The Birth Of The Blues, and includes

the likes of Tony Bennett, Louis Armstrong, Andey Williams, Barbra Streisand, Dylan, The Byrds, Donovan, Chicago, Janis Joplin, The O'Jays, and

Earth, Wind & Fire. Rock: The Train Kept A Rollin' features performances by The Yardbirds, Fleetwood

Mac, Santana, Bruce Springsteen, Boston, Aerosmith, Meat Loaf, The Clash, Pink Floyd,

Journey, Pearl Jam and Rage Against The Machine. R&B: From Doo-Wop To Hip -Hop covers the

evolution of urban music, including Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Aretha Franklin, Sly & The Family Stone, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross,

Babyface, Mariah Carey and The Fugees. International Music: Sony Music Around The World

features artist from across the globe, including artists from latin America, the far east, Europe, Asia, and

even Canada (54.40).

RPM - Monday October 25, 1999 - 3

Finally, Pop Music: The Modern Era (1976- 99) features a litany of hits from the last 25 years,

including Dream On (Aerosmith), Just The Way You Are (Billy Joel), Hungry Heart (Springsteen), Keep On Loving You (REO Speedwagon), Billie Jean

(Michael Jackson), Smooth Operator (Sade), Because You Loved Me (Celine Dion) and Doo Wop (Lauryn Hill).

Each double CD will feature a 64 -page booklet with extensive liner notes, rare photos, artifacts and artist memorabilia. The CDs draw on the impressive

list of talent that has been part of the Sony musical family, including the affiliated labels Columbia,

Epic, OKeh, Vocation, ARC and Brunswick. Sony plans to initiate an extensive marketing campaign to promote the set, which should be one

of the company's top priorities for the Christmas selling season. The product will be backed by two

waves of advertising and promotion, to support buy -

in and sell -through, into the year 2000.

with Elvira CapreeseMAPL! Triumph of the millennium!!! Once theCRTC brought in the 30% Cancon regs 30 yearsago, the one thing that made it easy was the MAPLlogo and the MAPL system. The industry adoptedthe system immediately and RPM negotiated to makethe logo available at no cost to the industry. We havecontinued to make this contribution to the industryand will do so to the end of this century. Howimportant was it? Is there a music director or on -airpersonality who hasn't referred to the MAPL logoto instantly identify Cancon? (EC: It's about time!!!)

Paul Alofs is back!!! And his PR machine shiftedinto gear almost immediately. He's back, living inmidtown Toronto, close to where he was before andhe's heading up his own venture capital company.Besides getting feature -sized articles with a photoin the dailies, he scored a number of televisioninterviews as well. He was named head of MP3.ComInc.'s strategic business units almost five monthsago, which followed his association with WaltDisney's retail operation as executive vice-presidentand general manager in San Diego, and before that,as we all know, he was president of BMG MusicCanada and before that head of HMV Canada. He'sstill going to be a consultant with MP3.COM. Wehave a more definitive piece on him in this week'sissue. (EC: A venture capitalist???)

Ashley Maclssac is making news ... again!!!With a new album being readied for release on theLoggerhead label, our favourite Cape Breton fiddleris making international news. He got a real deal whenhe made a bid from his Cape Breton home to buyElvis Presley's 1976 Cadillac Seville for only$75,000, which is American of course. He's left thecar at the MGM Grand for the time being. And get

Hold on, there's more Ashleynews. He's so pissed off at the Nova Scotiagovernment skimming money from charities acrossthe province that, he's apparently ready to throw hisfiddle into the political ring, and "use all the moneyI have to do my part in unseating the government."Here's a prediction. It seems that CapeBreton is always on stage, what with celtic, countryand pop music and now the Celtic Colours of theInternational Festival bringing more attention to thetight little island. Andthat's what Swingstep is all about, now playingToronto's Ford Centre for the Performing Artsthrough to Nov. 28. Jaymz Bee's LeisureDisc signed to Oasis

Oasis Entertainment has signed a distribution deal with LeisureDisc, a new label formed by Jaymz Bee with partners Glenn Smith and Brian Ainsworth.

Bee, who will be responsible for A&R, points out that the new label "will be home to recordings by artists who respect the music of the past but are

dedicated to creating classic music for the present." and pointedly indicates that LeisureDisc won't be

focusing on just one sound. "We are set up to service

an under -respected -- and sizable -- market segment of maturing music buyers."

Bee first came to prominence in the '80s with The Look People, a popular band of that era. By the

early '90s he was musical director on CBC's talk/ variety series Friday Night (ironically, he now hosts

a similar type show, The Jaymz Bee Radio Show, Saturday nights on Toronto's CFRB). He launched

The Royal Jelly Orchestra in 1995, releasing three

albums in Canada through BMG with the Milan label picking up two for US release. At the time, Bee was musical consultant to Paul Alofs during his

presidency at BMG. With videos featured on MuchMusic and MTV, Bee and RJO toured across

Canada and the US gaining a huge fan base. He also authored the book Cocktail Parties For Dummies for

IDG Books which now has 100,000 copies in print. First signing to LeisureDisc label is The Beehive

Singers described as "a four member jazz influenced vocal group" who have toured Canada twice as part

of Bee's touring show. The band's self -titled debut CD is expected to be released shortly with television and concert appearances planned for November. Bee will be releasing the follow-up to Cocktail

- Shaken

and Stirred early next year. As yet untitled, the release will feature a collection of Bee's original material and classic pop songs.

Businessman Rabinovitch new president of CBC

Prime Minister Jean Chretien confirmed yesterday that Montreal businessman Robert Rabinovitch has

been appointed the new president of the CBC. Rabinovitch, a former deputy minister of

communications under Trudeau, will take over on November 15.

The post of CBC president has been vacant since the departure of Perrin Beatty back in July.

Rabinovtich, who currently heads the Bronfman- owned Claridge Inc., is reportedly a multi-

millionaire from his work in the private sector. Rabinovitch was the prime choice of Heritage

Minister Sheila Copps, who praised the appointment yesterday.

"I believe Bob Rabinovitch's appointment, his

stature as a public servant and in the private sector brings a mix of dredentials which will help ensure

the CBC remains the premier public broadcaster into the next millenium. I'm just very excited about

working with him."

EMI secures Floyd rights, releasing The Wall Live

EMI Recorded Music has gained the worldwide rights to five classic Pink Floyd albums, giving them

the rights to 14 Floyd albums worldwide. And in a related story, EMI has also announced plans to release Is There Anybody Out There? The Wall Live.

EMI has secured the worldwide rights to five Pink Floyd classics, including The Wall, Wish You Were Here and Animals. The rights to these albums

outside of Europe were previously held by Sony, with EMI having the rights in Europe. EMI will now own the rights to 14 Pink Floyd albums.

The Wall Live, scheduled for a December 1

release, is being issued to mark the twentieth anniversary of the original album's release. The new

live album will come in a two CD, limited edition casebound book, with artwork by Storm Thorgerson.

The live album will also include some previously unreleased material. When The Wall was originally released in 1979,

the band performed the album live at just four sites

- New York, Los Angeles, Dortmund and London. The London shows were recorded on a 48 -track

mobile system, and Pink Floyd producer James Guthrie has sifted through those tapes to come up

with The Wall Live. A complete track listing is soon to be finalized.

Pink Floyd was formed in 1965 with original members Roger Waters, Nick Mason, Richard

Wright and Syd Barrett. Their 1972 recording, Dark Side Of The Moon, has sold more than 30 million

copies worldwide, making it the third highest -selling album of all time. Conceived and written by Roger

Waters, and produced by Waters, Bob Ezrin and David Gilmour.

ULTIMATE DIVAS -PopThe Greatest Female Vocalists Of OurTimeArista -71020-NJust in time for the holiday gift -giving seasonis the terrific package from Clive Davis et al atArista, who have quite a track record withfemale recording artists. What's nice about thiscompilation is that it doesn't just cover therecent years, but in fact goes all the way backin time to some of the original divas. BillieHolliday, appropriately, leads off the album withher fabulous purring voice on My Man, followedby Lena Home's cover of Stormy Weather.Along with Judy Garland's immortal Over TheRainbow (apparently, it was in some movie),there's also delicious offerings from DinahWashington (What A Difference A Day Makes),Sarah Vaughan (Broken Hearted Melody) andLady Ella (Someone To Watch Over Me).Gladys Knight is included, with, of course, hersignature Midnight Train To Georgia. And TinaTurner is here as well, with her biggest hit,What's Love Got To Do With It. Diana Rossand Dionne Warwick provide a pair of greattunes that just aren't heard enough anymore -Ross singing Touch Me In The Morning, andWarwick providing I'll Never Love This WayAgain. And to please the modern-day diva fans, there's also a smattering of today's biggestcharttoppers, including Annie Lennox (Why),Mary J. Blige (Not Gon' Cry), Toni Braxton (Un-Break My Heart), and Whitney Houston (I HaveNothing). Finally, to cap off the set, a recordingof Aretha Franklin's rendition of the famousPuccinni aria Nessun Dorma, which dazzledeveryone at the '98 Grammys. This is one ofthose rare CDs that is Grade A from top tobottom, and should just sell itself. -RR

TARA MACLEAN - PopPassengerNettwerk-30144-FGiven the impressive turnout at her recentToronto showcase, it seems that there's a lotof folks pulling for MacLean to have someserious success with this sophomore release. The release of her first record, Silence (1997)brought about some strong critical praise, andalso won her opening slots for the likes ofAshley Macisaac, the Barenaked Ladies,Garbage, Lisa Loeb and labelmate SarahMcLachlan, who also brought MacLean onboard for Lilith Fair. MacLean also managedto secure spots on a pair of soundtracks

(Inventing The Abbots, Teaching Mrs. Tingle),and the Lilith Fair CD. All of which wouldsuggest that MacLean is ready to emerge asthe latest in what has already become a verycrowded field of Canadian divas. Passengerhas a warm and subtle feel that's often similarto McLachlan's work, which shouldn't comeas a surprise. And judging by her showcaseperformance, she certainly has the pipes tofill any song. If I Fall has been taken as thefirst single, a catchy pop tune that should bean automatic add for AC and possibly CHRstations. And there are plenty of second singlealternatives on the record, including the leadtrack Jericho, as well as Reach, Jordan andHigher. The Malcolm Burn production isspotless, with the instrumentation allowed tosettle quietly into the background, providing asoft cushion for MacLean's voice. The resultsare quite pleasant to the ear, makingPassenger a nice Sunday -morning -over -coffeetype of album, that should make some noiseat retail. -RR

MEAT LOAF -RockVH1 StorytellersBeyond -78065-NHas there ever been a more bombastic, over -the -top performer in rock 'n roll than the mightyMeat? In the Meat Loaf world, rock and roll isa rough-hewn, jagged -edged form of popopera, with all the showmanship, pomposityand theatre that deservedly goes with it. Wasanyone quite prepared for Bat Out Of Hellwhen it first came out, with its outrageous andsuper -charged style? And who would havethought that this heavyweight contender could

come back, two decades later, with Bat OutOf Hell II, and get right back to the top of thecharts. Now that is pomposity at its best. Withhis flair for the dramatic, it's only natural thatMr. Loaf was invited to perform on VH1'sStorytellers series, their equivalent to MTV'sUnplugged program, or MuchMusic's Intimate& Interactive. Although the music here issomewhat stripped down, without the massiveorchestrations that normally fill a Meat Loafrecord, there's still plenty of power left, as isevidenced right off the bat with the first track,a scorching, one -minute tear through AllRevved Up With No Place To Go. As the showis named Storytellers, the CD also containsall the little asides that Meat Loaf offersbetween songs, which demonstrate that, all theflair aside, Mr. Meat is a pretty thoughtful andintelligent guy. Not surprisingly, all the gemsfrom Bat Out Of Hell are here, including YouTook The Words Right Out Of My Mouth, TwoOut Of Three Ain't Bad, the title track, and theapocalyptic Paradise By The Dashboard Light. Also featured is the huge hit from Bat Out OfHell II, I'd Do Anything For Love, and a bonustrack, a previously -unreleased version of IsNothing Sacred. By the way, Meat Loaf isscheduled for a December 15th appearanceat Toronto's Massey Hall, which may not bestanding afterwards. -RR

MARC JORDAN -JazzThis Is How Men CryBlue Note -20419-FIt seems a shame that this guy can't seem tostick at one label, given the quality of hissongwriting and recordings. At times, it seemslike Jordan may be destined to be one of thoseguys who has a great career as a songwriter, but can't crack the big show as a recordingartist. Jordan's had songs recorded by a slewof big -name artists, particularly Rod Stewart, who made Rhythm Of My Heart a #1 hitworldwide. But Jordan, who was with Warnerjust a few years back, then shifted over to OakStreet (Sony), is now at the Blue Note jazzlabel, distributed by EMI. And make no mistake,

this is a very jazzy record, even more so thanhis wonderful Reckless Valentine album. Therecord begins with a spoken word intro fromthe artist, which leads into the first single, theclever Charlie Parker Loves Me, which has anice, catchy hook that should make it a naturalfor AC radio, particularly in the evening hours. He follows that with a tasty cover of WillieNelson's Crazy, a much quieter version thanthe Patsy Cline classic. Also thrown in the mixis a rehash of his own I Must Have Left MyHeart, one of those songs perfectly suited fora lonely guy in a late -night bar with too manyproblems to care. Another pair of choice cutsare the covers of the Chet Baker classics Let'sGet Lost and Almost Blue (which was actuallywritten by Elvis Costello, don't ya know).Jordan's voice has that slightly rough, agedtexture perfectly suited for singing songs of thisnature. And the instrumental support is superb, including the likes of violinist Hugh Marsh, bassist Kieran Dyers, drummer Archie Alleyne, pianist Phil Dwyer, harmonica legend TootsThielemans, guitarist Kevin Breit, etc., etc.Jordan has always garnered a tremendousamount of respect amongst other artists, andthe prescence of some of the bestinstrumentalists in the world is pure testamentto that. This is an album to listen to when you'vejust been dumped, and you need somebodywho can understand. -RR

EURYTHMICS -PopPeaceRCA -74321695622-NIt's been a long time since we've seen theimpenetrable duo of Annie Lennox and DaveStewart together, and the folks at RCA hopethe attraction is still there with the public. Aftera brief but successful solo sojourn, it only madesense for Lennox to get back with the man whofirst made her a star. Stewart has always beensomewhat shy of the spotlight, and he wasfairly quiet during the time of the Eurythmics'hibernation. But his guitar -based, keyboard -enhanced pop has always provided a perfectbackdrop to Lennox's hearty voice. BMG isundoubtedly going to pull out all the stops for

this one, making it one of the top priorities forthe holiday season. Unlike some of their otherwork, this effort is heavily laced with keyboardsounds, with Stewart's guitar work occasionallysweep'ng through to give the songs some

spicy mustard. And as always, Lennox'spowerful tones give an austere potency toevery song she tackles. The lead single is thefirst off the album, 17 Again, an upbeat bit ofpop magic that has a charming reference toSweet Dreams, the song that introducedEurythmics to the world. While many older fansmay find the album a trifle mellow, there's stillenough strength in these numbers to makesome noise at CHR radio. Power To The Meek,Anything But Strong and I Want It All are qualitypop tunes with enough of an edge to make amark at CHR. But the real gem may be theanthemic title track, with Lennox's hauntingvoice standing out in stark isolation from thesubtle background. A great song with anequally powerful message, and a highlight ofthis strong comeback. -RR

ALBUM PICKLIVEThe Distance To HereRadioactive -19662-J"Light up a cigarette she said/and calm the fuck down." Those devillish words spill intothe vicious Voodoo Lady, one of several choice tracks on this new album from Mr.Kowalczyk and company, who have quickly gained a rep as one of the premier outfits inrock. The musical appeal is obvious. That churning, wall -of -sound guitar from Kowalczykand Chad Taylor has become almost trademark, and it fills the lead single, The Dolphin'sCry, right up to the rooftops. That first track, with its terrific accompanying video, hasalready made a serious splash at rock radio. It's easy to see why the kids are diggin' it,but Live seem to be aiming for a slightly more mature audience, and their detailed lyricalcontent reflects that. Kowalczyk is obviously a well-read fellow, and that knowledge filtersdown into his work. This isn't just the usual teen-grunge-angst bull about kids looking tohang themselves with their hightop laces orblow away their parents. Kowalczyk canobviously see that there is some hope outthere, as evidenced by the words fromSparkle: "I'm gatherin' up my friends today/and those who recognize the face/as thevision that changed my mind/from hate tofaith/was as simple as grapes to wine andsweet as/I'm gatherin' up my friends today/all these hookers and soldiers and swine/andwould be saints/all alone in their rooms thatsparkle in their eye/play a song that they'llcome outside to see if/love will overcome:'Great stuff, and finally, some positivity fromthe rock mainstream. Aside from theaforementioned Dolphin's Cry, there's plenty of choice material here, including TheDistance, Run To The Water, Feel The Quiet River Rage, Face And Ghost (The Children'sSong), and Dance With You. CHARLIE MAJOR - Country 444

Dead Reckoning -0015 (Oasis) Welcome back Charlie Major. The wait has

been well worth it. This is vintage Major. He didn't start where he left off. Rather, he's gotten

better, writing -wise, projection -wise and that vocal smarts just rings true with each track. Don't be confused about the lack of the MAPL

logo - this is an American label. All songs with

the exception of Oh Sister, written by Bob Dylan and Levy Jacques, are Major originals, which qualify as three -parts Cancon (MAL).

The CD was recorded in Nashville where it

was produced by Major and Dead Reckoning's co-founder Harry Stinson. Major's vocal signature is the key as proven by the immediate impact of Right Here, Right Now,

the first single. The new material, if you read between the lines, could almost be construed

as a Major confidential. His song messages have their ups and downs and sort of a peek into what could have been better times if the

playing field was level. However, that's Major's modus operandi and it serves him well here.

By the way, that's Margo Timmins of the Cowboy Junkies, adding vocal enhancement

on Oh Sister and Like Our Love, both priority tracks. But don't overlook One True Love and

Side By Side. Dead Reckoning is distributed in Canada by Oasis Entertainment and it's nice to see Ed Harris, late of MCA, is doing the

country thing again. -WG

LEANN RIMES - Country Self -titled

Curb -77947-F With all the candy -coated, kiss-assin' country

coming down the pipe by unknowns who go on to be unknowns that's decimating the once -

proud fan base, it's refreshing to hear country like it was supposed to be. It's not proper to

draw comparisons, but the Patsy Cline influence is almost foreboding as Rimes

serves up her own version of Willie Nelson's Crazy, the Hank Cochran penning of She's Got

You and I Fall To Pieces, written by Cochran and Harlan Howard. Cline aside, Rimes

cements her own vocal signature as well on nine other memorable traditional offerings:

Hank Williams'You're Cheatin' Heart, Me And Bobby McGee, written by Kris Kristofferson

and Fred Foster, Buck Owens' Cryin' Time, Leavin' On Your Mind, a penning by Webb Pierce and Wayne Walker, and Marty Robbins' Don't Worry. Big Deal, written by Al Anderson

and Jeffrey Steele, has been taken as the first single and is already impacting at ccountry radio. Produced by Wilbur C. Rimes, with

LeAnn taking co -producer credit. -WG

CLINT BLACK - Real Country D'Iectrified

RCA -67823-N We cautiously labelled this release as "Real

Country", which might offend some country programmers, but Black gets back to the

basics of country when the acoustic sound was in. Pretty powerful stuff here and he's already hit a nerve at country radio with When I Said I

Do, a duet with his wife Lisa Hartman Black, that's already set an impressive upwardly

mobile chart direction (#50*). By the way this is his first collaboration with his wife, and it's a

Black original. Black has also brought in some heavy hitters in the vocal assist field with Kenny

Loggins (Harmony) Steve Wariner (Been There), Bruce Hornsby (Dixie Lullaby). There's

also the influences of Edgar Winter, Waylon

Jennings and The Marshal Tucker Band. Of particular interest is Black's collaboration of

sorts with Monty Python's Eric Idle for the left -

of -centre bit of humour on Galaxy Song, a little unusual for Black. Also key is Who I Used To

Be, which he wrote with Hayden Nicholas and Where Your Love Won't Go, a song he wrote

with Steve Wariner. The album was produced by Black. There is a Musicvideo Card available

on the making of the album that plays in the standard CD-ROM drive of PCs and Macs and

which fit into the centre circular recess. Check out BMG for the availability of this very well put together video card. -WG

PLANET EARTH - R&B based Funk the ali shuffle

Planet Earth -01 (Independent) Seems like a strange category, but that's the

entertainment value here. Their off-the-wall talent at improvisation makes you have to listen

between the lines, if you get my drift. These 1---------- . .

the all shuffle

guys are very clever songwriters and highly professional musicians. The funk no doubt

comes from a bit of fooling around and coming

up with a sound that's not too funky with the right R&B frosting that's pleasurable to the ear.

Planet Earth is Dylan Heming (keyboards, guitars), Ron Littlejohn (lead and background vocals), Glenn Oliver (bass, guitar, background vocals), and Ben Riley (drums, vibes). Their

sound was beefed up by Steve Kennedy (tenor and alto sax, flute, background vocals), Geoff

Bournes (tenor sax), Vernon Dorge (tenor and alto sax), Creg Johnston (flute, guitar), Gad

Follys (guitar), Adele Armin and David McFadden (violins), Ansgar Schroer

(harmonica), Tony Rappaport (viola), and Richard Armini (cello) with Linda Feijo

(background vocals), not too shabby as a musical team. Check out What's Dat Funk,

containing cleverly integrated samples of Stevie Wonder's They Won't Go When I Go, James Brown's Make It Funky, Isaac Hayes'

By The Time I Get To Phoenix and B.B. King's Nobody Loves Me But My Mother. Don't overlook Raining On The City and Lovetown.

Produced by the band and recorded at PRS in Toronto. -WG

VEDA HILLE - Coffee House Folk You Do No Live In This World Alone

VMPO-1155 (Independent) There is little by way of notes to advise the casual and unitiated listener what to expect

RPM - Monday October 25, 1999 - 11

So, this reviewer risks being unkind by writing that what one hears is pretty much the same

as one used to hear in the early Haight Ashbury days. What was new and possibly

experimental then however, is now decidely passé. Miss Hille sings with evident sincerity

and possibly even passion but delivers only pretentious piffle. If that's what's intended then

perhaps there is some merit to the album. Otherwise, it's simply a time warp journey back

to the sixties wrapped in hubris. Take it as you find it. 100% MAPL. - BW

HORACE SILVER - Jazz Jazz Has A Sense Of humour

Verve -293-J The humour is in Silver's pointed lyrics which are not sung. The artistry is in his superb

playing of compositions -- his own -- which

even now in his eighth decade veer closely toward the funky. Not all of them mind you.

There's the Latin tinged, and our personal favourite, Gloria. In the end however, humour

reigns and what a delight it is to hear instead of the angst ridden music(?) of hell bent for

leather rockers so prevalent today. What else

can we say? Horace Silver remains one of the best jazz pianists

... suaviter in modo, fortiter

in re. -BW

THE ARROGANT - Musical Comedy WORMS

Dirt! AW-999 (Festival)

The Arrogant Worms require attention. On a casual hearing they seem to be simply another

folk group. Give an attentive listen to the lyrics however, and one realizes they're send up

artists offering their take on the folk scene whilst performing under a name that conjures

up heavy metal. It mustn't be supposed though, that they're a mere funny hate band. With their

vocalizing and musicianship they sound like The Kingston Trio or even The Weavers. This

is literate parody at its best and, we suggest,

a future collector's item. There are 14 tracks and we think that Gaelic Song will garner the

most airplay but our especial favourite is Wong's Chinese Buffet followed closely by the

less than two minutes long, I Am Cow. Hilarious. 100% MAPL. Who said Canadians

don't have a sense of humour? -BW

Dave Koz ready to Dance for new Capitol regime One listen to Dave Koz's new Capitol release, The

Dance, a you get the impression that Koz is a true perfectionist. On each and every track, there doesn't

seem to be one note that's out of place, one beat that's slightly off.

The Dance is the newest (and fifth overall) release from Koz on the Capitol label, but this may

be the one that pleases him the most, regardless of what it does commercially.

Since the release of his 1996 album Off The Beaten Path, Koz has endured some serious

,

personal ups and downs. He was affected greatly by the changing of the guard at Capitol US,

which saw the departure of Gary Gersh and arrival of Roy Lott. And he also felt great

personal loss, with the death of his father. Somewhere in that mix, he also had his car stolen

off an LA street, in broad daylight. It was this series of traumas that led Koz to

dig a little deeper into his more spiritual side, resulting in an album that he calls his most

personally pleasing yet. The Dance, which has already spun off one

AC hit in the lead track, Together Again, is notable not only for Koz's usual stellar work on the horn, but also for the impressive cast of star performers that he managed to corral for this project.

Luther Vandross offers his unique vocal stylings on Can't Let You Go (The Sha La Song),

while Montell Jordan sings a juicy lead vocal on Koz's take on the George Michael & Wham hit

Careless Whisper. Legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach joins Koz on the funky Don't Give Up,

which he also co -wrote. Also making appearances are session talents David Benoit, Jonathan Butler,

Marc Antoine, BeBe Winans, and Dave's own brother Jeff Koz, who also co -wrote the lead single,

Together Again. The production credits are also a who's who of

the business, including Bacharach, Jordan, Carl Sturken & Evan Rogers, and Glen Ballard. And

make no mistake, the production on this album is sparkling. Which brings us back to that question

about perfectionism again. "I would say that I am (a perfectionist)," says

Koz. "It's a constant challenge to not be one. But I

think ultimately that I am a perfectionist, like most artists I know. I'm sure it's not the first time you've heard this, but songs are like your children. With each song, you want to release it to the world with

its full potential. So when you're in the studio, you painstakingly do everything you can to make that

happen. But you can end up ruining it, if you spend too much time on it. Fortunately, that didn't happen

with this record." As noted earlier, Koz's relationship with the

upper regime at Capitol has taken something of a 180 degree turn in the last few years. Koz admits

openly that he did not see eye to eye with Gersh and his staff, feeling that they just didn't know what to do with his records.

But all that changed with Gersh's departure, and the subsequent arrival of new boss Roy Lott.

Although he is the president of the label, Lott ultimately became executive producer of The Dance,

working closely with Koz to make it work. "I had five years of being not a very happy

camper at Capitol. But all of a sudden, Gary left, and Roy came in, and when I sat down with my first

meeting with Roy, I knew that it was a new era for Capitol Records and a new era in my career. Because

I didn't have to prove that what I did was worthy of getting attention. He understood immediately, and

gave me the attention I felt I really needed. And instead of him just being an executive, in charge of

the whole thing, he was actually my A&R guy. "Every decision was with him, and his input

and fingerprint is on this whole record. And it was a dream come true. I'd never worked that closely with

anybody from my label, least of all the president" Koz says that it was Lott who suggested bringing Glen Ballard in to work on the album,

specifically the title track. Ballard, of course, is best known for his work with Alanis Morissette, which hardly seems to fit with working with a mainstream

instrumental artist like Koz. But the saxman says it was the Garth Brooks

song that eventually brought Ballard on board to work on the project. And the song itself would prove

to symbolize everything that Koz hoped to attain on the new release.

"Roy's the one who got Glen (Ballard) to take

a listen to this song The Dance, and Glen loved it. I don't really know Garth Brooks' music all that well,

so I wasn't aware of the song. But the minute I heard it I thought 'wow, this is such an amazing lyric'. I

think, in a large way, it encapsulated the overall feeling that I wanted people to have from this album.

That sense that, the world's not perfect, but while you're here, enjoy yourself and make the most out

of every moment. Surprisingly enough, the LA born and raised

Koz does have a serious Canadian connection. Both his parents were native Winnipeggers, and it was

probably more a fluke than anything else that Koz wasn't born in this country himself.

But the ties are definitely still here. Case in point was Koz's most recent guest appearance on

the Mike Bullard Show (Oct. 19), where he met up with his cousin Grant, a local musician living in

Toronto. Ultimately, however, it was all the typical

RPM -

Monday October 25, 1999 - 13

cliches about the Manitoba capital that eventually led Koz's parents to move elsewhere to raise their

family. "Both my parents were born and raised in Winnipeg, and when they got married, they left,

because my Dad hated the cold weather, and moved to California. So I often say that, even though I was

born and raised in LA, what would have happened if my parents never moved and stayed in Winnipeg. I don't know if I'd still be a musician. Maybe I'd be a musician, but I don't know if I'd have a recording

career." And how does a kid growing up in LA wind

up playing the saxophone? For most kids in their formative years, the drums and guitar are the

instruments of choice, the instruments that are cool. But for Koz, learning the saxophone was a

gateway into a whole other world. And by the time he became proficient on the horn, he came to

realize how much it meant to him, and suited him. "My brother had a band that did weddings, bar

mitzvahs, that sort of thing. They didn't have a sax player, but I wanted to be in that band, because

I saw that he and his buddies never had to have a real job. I was 13 years old, and my brother said `if you pick up the sax, and you get good, maybe

you can join the band'. Well that's all I needed to hear.

"But truthfully, it did feel good in my hands, it

was like a real natural fit. So eventually my brother gave me a shot. And it was great because

I was playing with people older and more experience than I was."

While Koz is considered one of the premier sax players in the business, with a proficiency on all

three types of sax (tenor, alto and soprano), he approaches with caution anyone who labels his

music 'jazz'. A very strong dislike has grown in recent years

on the traditional jazz side for more contemporary, mainstream players like Koz, Kenny G or David

Sanborn. The purists say that Koz et al are simply selling out, playing brainless pop music simply to make a buck and sell records.

But Koz feels that all the anger or resentment is very much a one-sided affair. Players like himself

and Kenny G have no desire to be seen as jazz artists. In fact, they'd prefer that people refer to them as the

pop artists that they are. But there's definitely no dislike for traditional jazz purists on his part. "I totally understand it, and I'm not upset by

it. But I just wish that people wouldn't attach the moniker of 'jazz' to my music. And Kenny G. said

the same thing, and David Sanborn has never referred to himself as a jazz musician. And neither

would I. "I have the utmost respect for people who are

more traditional, straight -ahead jazz. But that's not me. And I can't do it, even if I tried I couldn't do it.

But does that mean that I shouldn't play the saxophone? No. I think unfortunately that people

assume that because it's the sax, that makes it jazz. And I think in a lot of ways, the jazz press are a little bit too uptight."

Ironically, however, when promotion people are selling Koz's records at radio, the moniker they usually attach to it is 'smooth jazz', which doesn't exactly help in distancing Koz's music from

traditional jazz. "To me, that's a problem, because that's a

format at American radio, but I don't think it's a good title. I'd say call it instrumental pop music,

because that's what it is. Because if they call it jazz, then that opens up everything. But we don't have

anything to say about that. "And when you go into a record store, you'll

probably find this record in the jazz section. That's why you see that picture on the back cover, where I'm on my therapist's couch."
