Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA)- Signed into law by Governor Brown on September 16, 2014

Objective: Ensure the long-term reliability of our groundwater resources and connected surface water resources by requiring “sustainable” management

Balancing Supply and Demand by reducing groundwater overdraft

20-years to achieve sustainability (2020 through 2040)

Core Principle: Local Control = GSAs

The State may intervene if locals do not show progress towards reaching sustainability
