Neighborhood Streets Safety Celebration of Pedestrian Access & Safety Model Project Oakland, CA – Senior, disabled and student pedestrian access and safety have been greatly improved at the busy intersection of 18th Street and Adeline Street, thanks to the focused attention of Mayor Quan’s Pedestrian Access and Safety Task Force, Oakland’s Americans with Disabilities Act Programs Division, and the Public Works Agency’s Department of Engineering & Construction. This “Neighborhood Streets Safety” project leveraged limited City street and sidewalk improvement resources to address the priorities of pedestrians that frequent this intersection. As part of the Office of Parks and Recreation’s Unity in the Community celebration on Saturday, June 25, 2011, the Neighborhood Streets Safety collaborators will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony and press conference to celebrate the greatly improved four-block area.

Good Morning Mr. Clanton,

Thanks so much for getting this done. I was so happy to see last evening as I was turning to go home, that the arrows were painted. We as homeowners and taxpayers certainly do appreciate the work that the city does to improve the safety and quality of life in our community.

Once again, thanks for getting this done.

Dear Manny

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Unfortunately there are not enough words to express the level of appreciation for your ability to keep all of us safe in our vehicles. What with less and less to work with somehow you and your staff have pulled off wonders.

Not once in all these years I have dealt with your department have I ever heard any disgruntled or negative remarks about you. This speaks to the your caliber of professionalism, work ethic, and ability to create a safe, respectful place for your employees.

Yes we out here may have complained about the turn around on our vehicles. Or search frantically for our vehicles we thought were stolen. When they were towed after ample warning by you folks. But the seriousness of having safe, reliable, city vehicles was always first and formost. Enjoy your retirement. It was a pleasure to share this work experience all these years and thank you again for all you've done to keep me and my staff safe.

FROM: MANNY TO ALL

It was because of your constant support and encouragement that I was able to perform my duties so well. I have gained considerable knowledge, and I shall always cherish this as one of the most satisfying phases in my life. It has been a true privilege and an honor serving for the past 27 years. On a personal level, I have shared a special bond with all of you, and I shall take with me special memories of our time together. My career was challenging and rewarding. I did my best, and I was well rewarded in kind and in friendship. It was a privilege to be part of the City of Oakland, Heavy Equipment Service

Hi, Debbie Houser gave me your e-mail and I just wanted to thank your team in the PW call center as I frequently send e-mails about illegal dumping on G Street between 92nd and 85th. The call center has been most responsive and have even called me from time-to-time. This service has been vital for us. It is embarrassing for customers to see dead animals and debris. Again, many thanks to your team! You should be very proud of their efforts. Thank you,

Your expert advice and assistance in pulling together

internal resources and creating publicity for the project was invaluable. We were extremely demanding and that the schedule was very tight but you consistently kept to a “can do” approach—and we did do it! The many community members in attendance were very impressed with the ribbon cutting event. (Darn that train wreck for getting in the way of a good news story!)
