national news
PBS President Paula Kerger said she’s disappointed public TV’s federal funding again is under attack by
lawmakers. The move is ironic, she said, given the impressive number of Emmy Award nominations earned recently by PBS programs, including the popular drama “Downton Abbey.” PBS received 58 nods, second only to HBO and CBS. Public television gets 15 percent of its money from the federally funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting, with the rest largely contributed by viewers, Kerger told a meeting of the Television Critics Association. But some stations would lose more than half their money if funds are cut, and a number of them will be forced to “go dark,” she said. A loss of federal dollars “would eliminate public broadcasting in areas I know it’s tremendously used,” Kerger said. She cited a small Cookeville, TN, station that has done “an extraordinary job at
being an archive for the culture in that community.” U.S. House Republicans have unveiled legislation aimed at cutting off federal funding for public television and National Public Radio. Both have been targets before, with Republicans saying PBS could get along just fine without taxpayer help. Kerger said it’s “disappointing to me when you look at the value the American public places” on PBS. While she and other PBS executives try to be eloquent defenders of public TV, she said, it is ultimately the audience that can help protect it by making their support for PBS known to Congress. Rep. Norm Dicks of Washington, a top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, said last week the “extremely partisan proposal” stands little chance of being brought up on the House floor and will be disregarded by the Senate and President Barack Obama.

President Reagan blessed this publiC-priVATE pArTnEr-Ship ModEl of public broadcasting in America in a memorable conversation with Ken Burns about Ken’s masterpiece, The Civil War. “Government should provide the spark,” Reagan said, “and the private sector should do the rest.”

WcTe’s President and ceo becky magura was recently elected the national educational Telecommunications association (neTa) new board chair.
so what is neTa? neTa (the national educational Telecommunications association) is an association that serves public television and educational entities across the united states, plus the us virgin islands and Puerto rico. it connects people and ideas, providing quality programming, educational resources, professional development, management support and national representation. “The need for a strong public media agenda that continues to focus on local service across the country grows more every day,” said becky. “We have the infrastructure, we are doing the work and we are engaged in our communities, because of a vision created decades ago. neTa is part of the connective tissue among our national partners; it provides needed services in programming, business and health insurance and is a reliable conduit for information. neTa is stronger today for adapting to the needs of its members while staying true to its vision and mission.”
“being chair allows me a leadership position on a national level
which provides access to other national leaders as well as information
that impacts our local station. on a larger level as a national leader, i
have influence and can be a voice for small stations across the country,
including WcTe, since we face different challenges from our major
market counterparts.”

Bluegrass Underground Wins Two International
Awards
congratulations to executive Producer Todd mayo and emmy award-winning producer Todd Jarrell! after less than a year in
front of a national Pbs audience, their series bluegrass underground won both the cine Golden eagle and the Telly silver award. These prestigious prizes are awarded in recognition of the highest production values of the television/film industry. bluegrass underground is a local 12-part concert series and a unique “musical adventure” taped in front of a live audience 333 feet underground in the volcano room at the cumberland caverns near mcminnville. The cine competition has over 400 jurors screening hundreds of productions in search of “overall excellence that separates it from productions similar in content, genre or style” in “upholding an unparalleled reputation of excellence.” Past Golden eagle honorees include martin scorsese, sydney Pollack, billy crystal, robert deniro, robert altman, spike lee, Ken burns, ron howard, Jim henson, Pixar, and steven spielberg.
The Telly awards also honor the finest film
and video productions. The 2012 Telly awards
received over 12,000 entries from all 50 states
and 5 continents. This year’s honorees include
hisTorY, nbc universal, sPeed, disney,
esPn int’l, national Geographic, nasa, and
WGbh.
“a little bit bluegrass; a little bit
underground,” the series found wide acclaim
in its first season and is now airing on Pbs in
over 300 u.s. markets. The unique mix of
hd video, a near-perfect acoustical cavern,
and top musical talent brings viewers “an
eye-popping presentation of one of the most
visually amazing venues there is,” says Jarrell.

Jim Dillon
This is how you’ll likely see Jim dillon at a WcTe event – peeking out from behind a camera. he’s been
taking candid shots for the station since 1999, donating hours of his time and extraordinary photographic skills. Whether it’s the excitement of the Great Tv auction, the action at the live Green Tennessee 5K or the fun of stations of imagination, Jim is there, a smile on his face and his trusty canon camera in hand. so why does he do it? “it’s important. WcTe is a real asset to the community,” said Jim. “it’s local and yet it promotes us well beyond the region. everybody in the whole country knows what we do and how good we are thanks to our station.” “WcTe is a great place full of genuine, hardworking, welcoming people. i enjoy being around them and appreciate what they do. from the Putnam county fair to smithville fiddlers’ Jamboree, from TTu events to high school sports, they are always out there in the community.” born and raised in dayton, ohio, Jim’s
grandparents frequently came to the cookeville area, spending as much time as they could here. Jim would often come down too. he loved the region and the people and always knew he would retire here. in his early 30’s, he asked himself why he was waiting for retirement. in 1992, he made the move. his love of photography started when he was a kid and was given a green, plastic camera. even then he enjoyed capturing the moment, a memory that will never come around again. “You don’t realize how much work there is to watch and photograph and get some great candid shots of people. The shot is not always where the action is happening – it is people’s reaction, capturing the emotion.” Jim is a published photographer. his photos have appeared in the Dayton Daily News, the Journal Herald in dayton, USA Volleyball magazine, cookeville’s Herald-Citizen, Celebrations, TTu media, programs, websites just to name a few. You will see
him shooting at Tech sports events, for habitat for humanity and a number of other causes. Yet he never takes a dime. “i do it for me and not for someone else,” Jim said. “i can offer a service for people who can’t afford it. i enjoy seeing people’s reactions – they are genuinely grateful and appreciative.”

This fall WcTe continues its partnership with Tennessee Tech university’s Tech-redi initiative
to promote local tourism. The capstone of our partnership is the upper cumberland Tourism campaign, which encompasses the region as a whole. Through this campaign, we invite locals and visitors alike to discover the best our region has to offer. The upper cumberland area contains fourteen counties in middle Tennessee, including Pickett, fentress, cumberland, van buren and White counties on the east, to Jackson, clay, overton, Putnam, Warren, deKalb, cannon, macon and smith in the center and west. each county is unique but they all share the following characteristics: a rich cultural heritage, breathtaking natural beauty and outstanding special events. in addition to visiting the cordell hull birthplace museum and the sgt. alvin c. York historic Park, history buffs can drive the river bluffs and back roads of the upper cumberland civil War Trail. step back in time at Granville’s heritage day and visit the burritt
college memorial museum in spencer. The entire area contains some of the best small heritage museums and veterans’ halls in the country. in terms of natural beauty, the region is a veritable paradise. The home of center hill, dale hollow and cordell hull lakes, the area is perfect for outdoor recreation. visit the “land of falling Water” in White county and go kayaking on the beautiful rivers in the area. explore our numerous state parks and go hiking in the big south fork. The region is ideal for people with a love of outdoor fun and adventure. The region’s special events reflect its outstanding musical tradition. The smithville fiddler’s Jamboree, Jammin’ at hippie Jack’s americana music festival, sierra hull bluegrass festival, dailey and vincent homecoming concert and bluegrass underground at cumberland caverns are only a few of the world class musical events happening in the region throughout the year. canaan Williams started as an intern at WcTe in the spring of 2009 and was assigned to help with the online efforts of the live
Green and Prosper initiative. from there, he landed a part-time opening in master control. eager to learn, canaan also tackled a part-time position helping sue Gibbons in Traffic. in Production, he ran cameras, helped set up and tear down shoots, and edited video. he even wrote stories for Close-Up. What’s impressive is that he did all of this while still attending Tennessee Tech. “i graduated from TTu with a bs in communications with an emphasis in journalism in may 2012. This is my first “real job.” after high school, i didn’t want to go to college so i kicked around town (cookeville) for a couple of years and then went to Wyoming. i bounced between Wyoming, utah, and Tennessee before i enrolled at Tech.” “it took leaving and coming back to
appreciate what we have here.” recently the versatile canaan was offered a full time position with WcTe as an online and Programming associate, which he gladly accepted. The chance to live in this region and town he now sees with new eyes plus work in a career in public television is a unique opportunity. “my most memorable moment at WcTe (so far) is meeting bill moyers in memphis last november. he is a genuinely nice guy who takes the time to listen. When i was talking to him, i was just thinking, this is actually happening. Yeah, okay, this is actually happening.” “it’s great working for a small station. The staff allowed me to try my hand at a number of jobs until i settled into my current position. Growing up here, i never thought i would have these opportunities right here in cookeville. Working here has brought me closer to this community and to the upper cumberland region.”

The coverage will be interspersed with analysis, interviews and commentary, including: • Shields & Brooks - Political analysis from newshour

• Historians – Presidential historians richard norton smith and michael beschloss will provide historical context of the candidates’ acceptance speeches.
• By the Numbers – andy Kohut, President of the Pew research center, explores data to provide insight on what motivates each party’s activists and how voters identify with the parties; he’ll drill down into the demographic shifts in the country that have changed the parties and voters’ identification with them.

This moving, intimate, funny and true-to-life series,
based on the best-selling memoirs of the late Jennifer Worth,
tells colorful stories of midwifery and families in london’s
east end in the 1950s. Jenny lee, a young woman raised
in the wealthy english countryside, has chosen to become
a nurse and now, as a newly qualified midwife, has gone to
work in the poorest area of the city. attached to an order of
nursing nuns at nonnatus house, Jenny is part of a team of
women who minister to expectant mothers, many of whom
give birth at home in appalling conditions. The drama
follows Jenny as she meets her patients and learns to love the
people who live in the east end.

broAdWAy: ThE AMEriCAn MuSiCAlSundays, oct. 7-nov. 11
With the advent of Prohibition and the Jazz age, america
convulses with energy and change, and nowhere is the riotous
mix of classes and cultures more dramatically on display than
broadway.
“There was this period in which everybody was leaping
across borders and boundaries,” says director/producer George
c. Wolfe. “There was this incredible cross-fertilization,
cultural appropriation.” it was the age of “Whoopee” and the
“charleston,” runnin’ Wild and George White’s scandals,
when brash american women flapped their way to newfound
freedoms.
unique talents like the marx brothers and al Jolson — a
Jewish immigrant and Prohibition’s biggest star — rocket to
stardom. The Gershwin brothers, the minstrels of the Jazz age,
bring a “fascinating rhythm” to an entire nation. innovative
songwriting teams like richard rodgers and lorenz hart ignite
a new age of bright melodies and clever lyrics with the massive
hit manhattan.
but as the roaring Twenties come to a close, broadway’s
Jazz age suffers the one-two punch of the “talking picture”
and the stock market crash, triggering a massive talent exodus
to hollywood and putting an end to broadway’s feverish
expansion.

Zooming in for a Close-Up
Sundays, October 7 to November 11
In the year before WWII, 165 Eaton Place reopens its doors and welcomes viewers back into the lives of its inhabitants, upstairs and down. Lady Agnes and Sir Hallam’s family is now complete with the addition of two small children, but Sir Hallam is drawn into dangerous waters by his preoccupation with the
threat of Nazi Germany and the return of troubled Lady Persie. Lady Agnes catches the eye of charismatic American multi-millionaire Casper Landry, and Sir Hallam’s aunt, Dr. Blanche Mottershead, has made herself comfortable in the house after Lady Maud’s death. Meanwhile, life downstairs adjusts to the absence of Rose and the addition of the spirited new nursery maid, Beryl. With upstairs and downstairs harboring life-changing secrets, and the menace of war creeping ever closer, the smooth running of Eaton Place threatens to come to a halt.

A Special Television Event, Premieres October
1-2, 2012 on PBS
half the Sky, a show of force llc and fugitive films production developed in association with the independent Television service
(iTvs), is a special television event that uses in-the-moment investigations and emotionally explosive storytelling to confront the greatest moral challenge of our time: the oppression of women and girls around the world. filmed in 10 countries and inspired by the best-selling book by Pulitzer Prize-winning authors nicholas Kristof and sheryl Wudunn, Half the Sky is driven by the growing awareness that empowering women is the best way to increase prosperity and stability around the globe. introduced by George clooney, six talented actress-advocates join Kristof as he travels to asia and africa to meet face-to-face with inspiring individuals working to bring about change and the women and girls who confront extreme gender inequality in their daily lives. Women and girls around the globe face threats — trafficking, prostitution, violence,
and discrimination — every day of their lives. says Wudunn, “in the same way that slavery was a moral challenge for the 19th century and totalitarianism was a challenge for the 20th century, the challenge that women and girls face around the world is the moral challenge of our time.” as we see in Half the Sky, hope endures as fearless women and men are developing innovative ways to turn the tide.
More than just a television program, the Half The Sky project is a great resource
for instructors and includes the four-hour program, 2 websites, 20 educational video modules with a companion text, a social
media campaign supporting over 30 partners, a Facebook-hosted social-action game and
mobile games.
